5 out of 5 stars Great pipes.......2007-04-05

Very well done, Amazing Grace is fantastic. All in all a fine pipes album.

2 out of 5 stars Two thumbs doon.......2006-03-21

Ach! T'were pipin' music I were wantin', not ELO does "Rebel Piper". I mean, disco bagpipes? Good lord. Yes, the cheap-hotel-lounge-rock-band backups were grim indeed; the full orchestra numbers weren't much better. In fact, the only reason I didn't give this one star was because a (very) few of the selections weren't TOO bad.

Unless you want Highland/Second-rate Hollywood fusion, then avoid this gobbler at all costs.

4 out of 5 stars Highland Cathedral - Pipes and Drums.......2006-03-21

I like it, up lifting, and exciting music. Dont like two of the tracks much with horns and band, but thats ok.

3 out of 5 stars Yawn..........2005-04-19

The tracks that are worth listening to on this CD are done far better on their more recent CD, "Parallel Tracks." Why they bothered with arranging the Titanic theme is beyond me... Not a bad CD, but they've done better.

4 out of 5 stars Nice CD.......2004-09-03

This is a very nicely done cd of the Scots Guards, playing with Military band and their Ceilidh Band. There's a good mix of music on this cd from Traditional to Movie (Braveheart, Titanic, etc). This cd has great recording quality and the pipers are together throughout the cd. I only give this cd a 4 star rating due to my own preferences for pipe music (I'm not a fan of The Castle Walls, The Rebel Piper, or Soldier, Soldier period!)

Album Description

"BANGER* FOR BREAKFAST", is Wicked Tinker's fourth attempt at music recording. It's live and raw - like you'll usually find us at the Scottish Highland Games. "Banger" originally started out with 60 hours of music recorded live across the country. We whittled it down to a couple hours of our greatest hits. This first of two CDs, is a bunch of favorites snatched from our three previous releases, with ten new tunes thrown in to boot. All this in one tribal-thumping CD. You'll find your body moving against your consent.

5 out of 5 stars No Rest For the Wicked!!!!!!!.......2007-04-10

This disk give the listener a great idea of what it's like to be at a Wicked Tinkers performance.

Considering the quality of the concert performances that the Tinkers do in their live shows and considering that this CD is a compilation of several live shows, you get more than your money's worth with this disk.

A great representation of the Wicked Tinker's music!

May the music gods continue to smile upon the Wicked Tinkers!

5 out of 5 stars My kids are hooked on this band!.......2006-09-06

My family saw this band play live at the Pleasanton Highland Games, where they were incredibly energetic and fun to watch. Something like a bagpipe jazz combo. This CD does a good job of capturing some of that energy (though you should try to catch them in the flesh if they ever play in your neighborhood!). My kids are simply hooked on this music. They can't stop twirling and stomping to it, and my older one has declared that she wants to learn the bagpipes! Beware - this music needs to be played LOUD. You may scare the neighbors. Just fab.

5 out of 5 stars live and raw.......2006-03-19

This is another great live CD, recorded in many sessions and locations, and brought together in a "best-of" format. Track 3 has an excellent drum feature, and track 5 (Danny Boy) is well done, as is the Amazing Grace Plus in track 15. One item to note is the brief explanation of the roots of the bagpipes in track 6, which leads into an unusual Middle Eastern special song in track 7. This CD, like their Whisky Supper album, contains several moments of conversations with the crowd and among the bandmates of Wicked Tinkers. This lends it a cozier listen than just a "dry" album, or a concert arena sound. With the combination of tracks available on other CDs, plus new ones makes this a great starter CD, especially for fans of Celtic music, bagpipes in particular. The addition of their "trademark" didgeridoo (explained in and featured on track 22) makes this a must-have, unusual collection of traditional songs with new takes, and uniquely varied material. You can't miss with this one!

5 out of 5 stars Banger for Breakfast.......2006-03-18

I don't think there's another band like the Wicked Tinkers in existence. Super-high-energy, with a huge bagpipe/drums/sometimes didgeridoo sound, they reinfuse life into a subgenre of traditional folk music that sometimes lacks energy and innovation. It's impossible to sit still while listening to this. I saw a clip of the band at a Scottish Faire in Northern California on TV and was immediately hooked (well done of one of the band members to have a T-shirt on with the band's name, otherwise I would never have known who they were).

I've loved all of the Tinkers' albums and this one is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome music!.......2006-03-01

I read an online review about this cd,and took a chance.Gosh I was in heaven today listening to this awesome group.
Much better than other groups who play this kind of music!

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best cd I've ever received........2007-01-16

I purchased Scotland's Great Highland Bagpipes at Christmas for my husband who is of Scottish descent and the other day he walked into the living room with this cd in hand and proclaimed that this was ". . . probably the best cd he had ever received." His father was a highlander in West Virginia and California and I took that into consideration when choosing a cd from your list. We would recommend it to anyone who loves the sound of real bagpipes and the music that they are so known for.

Pop songwriter and Irish instrumentalist Phil Coulter melds the traditional and contemporary on his American debut, Highland Cathedral. Filled mostly with light, airy piano tinkling, this music soothes with simple melodies while recalling the Celtic tradition. Soft uilleann pipes and whistles swoop in and out of Coulter's piano, and his occasional use of harp, violin, accordion, and cello add a new dimension (albeit unexciting yet interesting) to the music. Coulter is also unafraid of the synthesizer, which on such songs as the title track, "Tranquility," and "If These Stones Could Speak," creates a lush, timeless feel akin to the music of Enya and one that works well. In fact, Aoife (pronounced "ee-fah"), a protégé of Maire Brennan, Enya's sister, contributes a crystal soprano to select tracks and these songs are definite highlights. Not for the listener looking to push listening boundaries, but rather for those plainly in love with pleasant New Age Celtic music, Highland Cathedral well satisfies. --Karen K. Hugg

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Celtic Fantasies.......2004-04-29

Take soft piano and string renditions of melodic tunes. Add a smattering of traditional music like 'Flow Gently Sweet Afton' and 'Over the Sea to Skye.' Mix with the occasional skirl of bagpipes and the fine voice of Aife ni Fhearraigh. Put Phil Coulter at the helm and in short order you have Highland Cathedral an album that can best be described as Celtic New Age - if you need to describe it at all.

Enya, of course, owns this market segment, and will probably own it forever. But once you leave her own ingenious ability to write beautiful music and sing it just as well, the drop off to second best is a bit steep. Phil Coulter is perhaps the best of them, although his style is more or less one step removed from Celtic film music, it's always the kind of listening that invites you to sit bake and take a weight of your shoulders.

Occasionally, he shows some daring, but for the most part he is theme and variations of traditional sounds. And, perhaps, a bit too much them and not enough variation. Even so, I like Highland Cathedral, and probably always shall. Like most of my generation, I am a secret Celt. Entranced by legends, and music and sounds that always seem a bit better than the ones to which I am heir.

And this suits me fine, whether it is that martial bagpipes of 'Highland Cathedral,' the easy familiarity of 'The Flowers of the Forest,' or the beautiful singing on 'If these Stones Could Speak' or 'Our Island Barque.' While this music will never move mountins, it can still move the listener a bit closer to comfort and peace. No small accomplishment.

5 out of 5 stars Highland Cathedral by Phil Coulter.......2004-02-19

This is as good as it gets. Mr. Coulter is in touch with the stars of the heavens, and his music speaks with nostalgia of a world he knows well, remembers fondly, and wishes to introduce to us. Just buy it - you will love it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Uplifting Compositions.......2003-11-20

Highland Cathedral represents my first exposure to Phil Coulter's music. I find this album to be a wonderful blend of the modern and the traditional, the personal and the universal, the meditative and the motivational. Phil Coulter manages to use a variety of musical vehicles to deliver transcendent music including solo piano, Celtic and Scottish melodies, enchanting vocals, and textured harmonies. The album is simply beautiful, full of songs that inspire and elevate the soul. If you like contemplative, new age, or Celtic music, then you'll surely appreciate Highland Cathedral.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2001-08-16

I have had this cd for about a month now and I never get tired of listening to it. It is relaxing without being boring. I love the way Phil Coulter gives a discription about each song giving you a background of how he wrote it and what it represents. My husband loves his music and even my four year old grandson loves the "drum song" (you will know which one I am refering to when you hear all of the beautiful sounds of all kinds of drums as the focal point put together with the music. I highly recommend this to people who like Enya, Yanni, John Tesh, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Highland Cathedral.......2000-03-20

This CD combines vocal and instumental works inspired by celtic culture. Inspirational & motivational music. A must have!

Album Description

Welcome to our third CD. On this recording you will find what we call 'Gaelic Bagpipe Music' ? not the refined playing of a modern pipe band, but our own version of these ancient, tribal sounds. WICKED TINKERS perform the kind of music you might have heard hundreds of years ago at a Scottish wedding, ceilidh, or around the campfire of a Highland raiding party. We blend the emotion and power of the Great Highland Bagpipe with the pounding of raw tribal rhythms and on this cd add the haunting tones of the 'Corn na hÉireann'- the Bronze Age Irish Horn - a sound lost for millennia. We play the music of the Scottish Highlands, spicing it with the Celtic tunes of Ireland and the many lands graced by the Gaelic people.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Something Wicked This Way Comes.............2007-04-10

The Wicked Tinkers put on the best shows ever!

The music is very hi quality, fun, and unashamedly uplifting!

The kind of music you think of when you want good time with great friends!

Just the thing you want to hear when you are feeling down or need that boost to get you thru the day.

And let the naysayers sit at home and nit pick about the singing all they want...songs like "I Will Go" will move you!

Especially if you are a serviceman or a serviceman's family member.

Keep on going guys!!!

5 out of 5 stars 2 wrecked eardrums.......2006-08-08

These guys are amazing. I got to see them at the local Highland Games in my area last month. They throw one hell of a live performace. I picked up two of their CDs at the games, and just recently purhased two others. This album is particularly intriguing, as it introduces the brass horn, along with the digderidoo... which make for a very interesting blend along with the pipes. I think sometimes the low bass of the didge muddles some of the other sounds, but I could care less... this albums is pretty high energy, with excellent piping, and relentless drums. Wiked Tinkers, and Loud have barely left my CD player since I bought them. My favorite tracks on this particular album are # 4,5,and 6..Gaelic Aire, 6/8 Marches, and I Will Go. I would disregard the disdain others have shown for the vocal tracks. They aren't that bad, and add some variety...and seem very earnest at heart. I see nothing wrong with that. If you like bagpipes, chances are you will like this...a strong 3rd release from these guys, check it out if you get the chance.

5 out of 5 stars want to dance?.......2006-03-17

This CD makes a person who doesn't know how to dance WANT to learn. They are very energic and it is contagious!! "Whisky Supper" and "Wicked Tinkers" are also great CD"s. Saw them at White Horse Coffee & Tea Co. at Sutherlin, Oregon. They performed outside in heat over 100 degrees and it didn't slow them down a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic and exciting.......2005-08-04

I agree- the Tinkers have a style all their own that is dynamic and exciting. I love that while the music is primitive it also has great technical elements. How does he play so fast?! This was my first Tinkers CD and I still like it best- in part /because/ of the vocals. It's a good contrast to occasionally have a context for the music and there are definitely much worse vocalists than Mr. Shaw out there. Yes, the CD's are not as great as a live performance. I concede that it's very difficult indeed to capture guys in kilts dancing on pub tables (while they're playing) on a CD. Because Tinkers have so much "personality" the CD isn't a perfect substitute, but it will at least sustain you until the band returns to your area.

5 out of 5 stars Fun folk bagpipe and drum band!.......2004-10-23

Saw them live, bought the cd, and now I have hours of bagpipes blowing out my truck windows. The drums, various drones, and occasional vocals add to the variety. I love 'em!

5 out of 5 stars Highland Farewell.......2006-02-25

Beautiful, moving and gradious music. An excelent sample of neo-celtic-new age style of music.Along the different songs Steve McDonald portrays the sense of loss and dettachmnt of the scottish people that had to leave their beloved land and move for good to foreign and unknown lands.Even if you're not scottish you can perceive the great drama of the celtic exodus.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!.......2004-05-26

I love all of Steve's CD's! They always take me back in time to the experiences of the Scottish people. I don't know how many times I've cried while listening to his music. The strength and stamina of the Scotts is incredible and Steve's chronicle of their desire for freedom is excellent!

1 out of 5 stars Trite, Banal Treatment of a Terrible History.......2003-06-06

If you are looking for Gaelic music, even in a progressive format, you won't find it in this CD, which is a pastiche of bad poetry and bad music.

Several reviewers have commented on the poetry aspect of the songs - well, if you are into trite and banal rhymes, then this is the album for you. Let's see, we've got the chorus of "Southern Gael" - "Hey hey, Southern Gael, you made it through the wind and hail" repeated ad nauseum. The rest of this, with the exception of "Pain", which is a true work of Scotland, is much the same.

The music, which overuses synthesizers, is typical New Age garbage - all major key, 4:4 timing - kind of like Madonna without the originality. Actually, the whole album reminds me of David Arkenstone. Wordy and pretentious

The Highland Clearances were a dark and sad time, and the story deserves a better treatment than this. I suggest "Fire in the Glen" by Manus Lunny, Phil Cunningham and Andy Stewart, of "Silly Wizard" fame, not to mention "Caledonia's Hearty Sons" by the full "Silly Wizard" crew, "Anthem for the Common Man" by the very prolific "Battlefield Band", and "Real Estate" by Dougie MacLean.

4 out of 5 stars Melodius McDonald.......2002-07-09

While this CD doesn't have the impact of "Sons of Somerled," it is still more than worth a listen. McDonald illustrates his love and pride in his Scottish ancestry with every breath, bringing both pathos for the Clearances, and pride in the Scots ability to triumph in the face of adversity. McDonald's work brings unique cultural stamp of the Highlands to all corners of the world--a polar opposite to the original English intent!

Bravo!

3 out of 5 stars a few diamonds in the middle of much rough.......2002-04-18

McDonald's work has two pros and one con. The pros are his excellent poetry and his embellishment of the traditional Scottish tunes "Flower of Scotland" and "Scottish Soldier." The con is his reliance on soft rock. With the exception of the two traditional tunes already mentioned, one would get much more out of this CD if one just read the lyrics (Seawulf is excellent poetry) and muted the synthesizer.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Funeral Bagpipes.......2007-02-19

Purchased this CD looking for funeral music to play during military funerals for the Patriot Guard Riders. Music was satisfactory altho the selections are rather short, however, the duration doesn't make a difference to me since they are recorded on an MP3 player that I use on the motorcycle and can be played over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace is simply soul rending........2007-02-18

I have heard alot of bands perform Amazing Grace but hearing this solo piping is simply overwhelming. We played this at a memorial and everyone was in tears.
