Before Our Time in Eden there was Blind Man's Zoo.......2007-05-23
Other than the final track, [titled Jubilee] there's not a song that is less then excellent. Many fans may differ, but this album is lyrically the icing on the cake I believe Natalie Merchants distinctive lyrical abilities are in full force. With reference to her songwriting powers I shall quote Bill Flanagan, [March 1985, Musician]: Merchant's garret-land lyrics are fairly challenging compared to average rock dumbness. Many of 10,000 Maniacs' "pretty" songs are about war, nuclear weapons, even toxic defoliants. (Merchant has a second cousin with no arms as a result of Agent Orange.) Her writing is full of references to childhood, and enough Roman Catholic iconography to decorate a convent. Add melody and the band's wistful playing, and you get images of lost innocence and questioning adolescents.
Significantly, certain listeners kvetch regarding the sternness in the political quality or tone carping that its too just too much message. On the other hand, if you enjoy songwriting from a socially conscious perspective then this 1980s disc is for you: Vietnam, ecology, the need for greater compassion in everyday life, it's all here -- shaken together, pulled apart examined and woven back together in lyrical threads and thunderous, chiming, exhilarating, music. This album can preach. Nevertheless, the rhythm and the lyrics work together in such an emotive tandem that we listeners encounter honest, passionate and personal works of art that allow the alleged preaching to be rather edifying, and encouraging: BMZ captures the band, and Natalie at the Crossroads, before mass popularity and their morphing into 'adult alternative' not so aggressive style, if you're a fan - or, if you've only listened to Our Time in Eden, you should check Blind Man's Zoo. Keep your eyes open along with your hearts and your ears: you will find a treasure at this Zoo. All the songs are first-rate, the final track: to me, drags and the album could've been better with one extra up-tempo selection.
Trouble Me
Please Forgive Us
The Big Parade lyrics quoted below
The Lion's Share lyrics quoted below
In summary, the Maniacs were the greatest with Natalie weaving heavy lyrics at this juncture in her career; Natalies focus is always personal lyrically on this underestimated album. You should include Blind Man's Zoo in your CD collection, especially if youre a fan of the classic version of 10,000 Maniacs. The musical backdrop contrasted and complemented the serious lyrics in the most outstanding manner it was almost surreal to see this band perform live! I had that pleasure more than once they are warm memories now of a hot summer. I love classic 10k Maniacs if I could, Id use a DeLorean to travel back, and see this band one more time!!!
---- The Big Parade ----
Detroit to D.C. night train, Capitol, parts East. Lone young man takes a seat. And by the rhythm of the rails, reading all his mother's mail from a city boy in a jungle town postmarked Saigon. He'll go live his mother's dream, join the slowest parade he'll ever see. Her weight of sorrows carried long and carried far. "Take these, Tommy, to The Wall."
Metro line to the Mall site with a tour of Japanese. He's wandering and lost until a vet in worn fatigues takes him down to where they belong. Near a soldier, an ex-Marine with a tattooed dagger and eagle trembling, he bites his lip beside a widow breaking down. She takes her Purple Heart, makes a fist, strikes The Wall. All come to live a dream, to join the slowest parade they'll ever see. Their weight of sorrows carried long and carried far, taken to The Wall.
It's 40 paces to the year that he was slain. His hand's slipping down The Wall for it's slick with rain. How would life have ever been the same if this wall had carved in it one less name? But for Christ's sake, he's been dead over 20 years. He leaves the letters asking, "Who caused my mother's tears, was it Washington or the Viet Cong?" Slow deliberate steps are involved. He takes them away from the black granite wall toward the other monuments so white and clean.
O, Potomac, what you've seen. Abraham had his war too, but an honest war or so it's taught in school.
---- The Lion's Share ----
Can I be unhappy? Look at what I see: a beast in furs and crowned in luxury. He's a wealthy man in the poorest land, a self-appointed king, and there's no complaining while he's reigning. The lambs are bare of fleece and cold; the lion has stolen that, I'm told. There must be some creature mighty as you are. The lambs go hungry (not fair), the biggest portion is the lion's share. There must be some creature mighty as you are. Can I be unhappy? Listen and agree, no words can shame him or tame him. The lambs are bare of fleece and cold; the lion has stolen that, I'm told. There must be some creature mighty as you are. The lambs go hungry (not fair); the biggest portion is the lion's share. There must be some creature mighty as you are, as you are. Razor claws in velvet paws, you dunce in your guarded home, 'til a stronger beast will call on you and pounce upon your throne. Do we pay? Dearly, for the lion takes so greedily and he knows that what he's taken, it is ours.
That's how the wealth's divided among the lambs and king of the beasts, it is so one-sided. Until the lamb is king of the beasts we live so one-sided.
Some Gems But a Bit Spotty -- 3 1/2 Stars.......2006-08-08
It produced two certifiable gems, "Eat for Two," and "Trouble Me," and is worth picking up for these two alone. Merchant's confidence is growing, and her songwriting is picking up depth and dimension.
There are, however, a few clunkers. While I have no problem with the political statements on a few tracks, I do find the lyrics a bit obvious and the arrangements uninspiring. In particular, the drum work is derivative and there are few moments where it appears the guitar is going for an Edge-type soundscape, which to me doesn't fit in with the other elements of the Maniacs style.
I prefer the more upbeat tracks, those where Merchant is stretching out and finding her voice. You can here it developing here, in bits and pieces, and it's an album you'll enjoy if you find that journey intriguing.
Dense and Intriguing.......2006-05-18
'Blind Man's Zoo' has a reputation for being overly political, depressing, and difficult, and I would agree with all three, for the most part. As you listen to these songs, you need to be reading along with the lyrics in the booklet, as I feel what she's saying definitely strengthens the songs. When I first heard this record, I didn't care for too many of the songs until I really examined them; reading and analyzing the lyrics furthered my appreciation for these songs.
"Eat for Two" sounds off - upbeat but starting in a minor key, but I wouldn't change it. This is probably the most instantly appealing song here, but it's just as dark as any of the others, a "nightmare born in a borrowed bed...."
The best part of the album, however, is the last two songs: "Hateful Hate" and "Jubilee", which to me are the most depressing (both musically and lyrically) on the record, and the latter is essentially the most disturbing song I've ever heard. "Hateful Hate" has Natalie condemning Manifest Destiny, slavery, and hunting, backed by her very powerful pipe organ playing. As "Hateful Hate" climaxes, "Jubilee" starts as a seemingly comfortable mellow ballad, telling the story of a religious zealot who becomes infuriated when he witnesses an interracial (school?) dance, the "Jubilee". "He's God's mad disciple," and he feels the need to destroy what he believes to be evil and wrong. "Through the tall blades of grass, he heads for the Jubilee with a bucket in his right hand, full of rags soaked in gasoline," and the song crescendos into a sonic frenzy of a frantic string orchestra and Natalie's painful wailing.
This is not a record for a casual music listener, but if you're someone who enjoys music that makes you think and feel, then I would highly recommed "Blind Man's Zoo".

Jars of Clay admirably stretched the boundaries of Christian pop music when their self-titled debut scaled the charts in 1995. Two releases later, the group's peculiar yet appealing brand of alt-acoustic-Christpop remains a study in irony: relatively simple on the outside, brooding and introspective on the inside. If I Left the Zoo returns to form with a renewed focus on songwriting; the disc is a stripped-down and more organic effort than the richly layered but equally rewarding Much Afraid (1997). The opening song "Goodbye, Goodnight," with its lighthearted accordion and mandolin, quickly sets the tone. While the tune itself is a sprightly sing-along, lyrically the Jars hit you with end-of-the-millennium social commentary ("Raise a glass for ignorance / drink a toast to fear / The beginning of the end has come / that's why we all are here"). The oddly attractive "Unforgetful You," the bittersweet "Famous Last Words," and the melodic rocker "Can't Erase It" are sure-fire radio hits. While the playful, digestible quality of the band's music is undeniable, they've become equally effective as songwriters for a generation. --Michael LyttleCustomer Reviews:

First Exposure!!.......2004-11-13
Anyway, I picked this up about 2 1/2 years ago and couldn't get enough. So, I bought "Much Afraid" and didn't like it as much. Different type of music. It's interesting to see how a group can have such different sytles in a 2 year period. I haven't picked up any other works of theirs since, but I plan to. I guess I'm "Much Afraid" that I won't like it as much as the "Zoo"!!
I recommend this album to anyone that loves music and God!
Experimenting Jars.......2004-09-02
Anyway, this is a review, so let's get to it.
I have been a big fan of Jars of Clay for more than 5 years now, and like the way the band has evolved, I feel like I have grown with the music.
I wasn't really too fond of The Zoo until a couple of years after it's release. I guess I was looking for something like Much afraid, and this album was just too different for me. I did not appreciate the experimentation and quirkyness, but still liked songs such as Goodbye goodnight, Collide, No one loves me like you and River Constantine. Very slowly I found out that If I left the zoo was just the "happier" side of Jars of Clay and today I love it. The acoustic sound, the strange synthesizers and all the funny extra details in the background are great and like most other Jars albums I listen to it over and over. One very important detail about The Zoo is that this album made me finally fall in love with Dan Haseltines voice.
The reason why I "only" give 4 stars for this album, is that I still prefer Much afraid, The eleventh hour and Who We are instead just a little bit more.
My favourites are:
1. Goodbye, goodnight - Very ironic lyrics and a whole lot of good old Beatles-atmospheare with the strings and vocals.
3. Collide - A great rock-song with crunchy guitars and soaring mellotron-strings. The chorus sticks to your brain after just one listen-
4. No one loves me like you - A bluegrass-inspired ballad with pump-organ, mandolin and strong sweet vocals. The lyrics talks about how love can be the most wonderful thing, and how it can also hurt.
6. Sad Clown - Very slow piano-driven ballad with a lot of Beatles-influence. Dans voice reaches new heights on this one.
9. Grace - This song is about God's everlasting grace that always makes us return when we have turned our back on Him. Musically it is very good folk-rock driven by a mix of guitar and accordion.
10. Can't erase it - it's just a strong country-rock song with great lyrics and vocals.
11. River Constantine - A beautiful, somewhat mysterious ballad about letting the holy spirit take over. In the chorus, Dans vocals gives me shivers.

I love NOFX but..........2006-10-18
All ranting aside, there are some good songs on this album. Freedom like a shopping cart, Bleeding Heart Disease, The Black and White and Drop the World are the only songs I actually enjoy listening to. The only other 2 songs I can tolerate are Whats a Matter with Kids Today and Release the Hostages. Everything else on the album is pure, and totally uncut FILLER.
So the bottom line is if you are starting to get into NOFX I recommend starting with White Trash, 2 Heebs and a Bean, then moving on to Punk and Drublic. Then if you really want to, LISTEN to this record first all the way through then decide if its for you. Trust me, no one will critisize you for not having it because everyone knows it sucks.
And for the people who desperatly try to defend this album, give it up. Even NOFX knows this record sucks. I have personally seen this band live 3 times and have only heard 1 song played from this record ONCE. And the song was the 45 second opener Hobophobic so that right there should tell you all you need to know about this record.

Liza is a good track to listen to get a feeling for how this album differs from the "standard" NOFX sound. Lyrically it's standard fare, smart humor and politics shot padded with bathroom humor (hear specifically lesbian and fat girl jokes.)
This album rocks, but if you're more interested in being hardcore then picking up a catchy good record you might think it's "weak sauce." just a warning.
"Freedom Like a Shopping Cart" may be the best song ever recorded.

No Suess can summon slumber like the perfect-for-bedtime If I Ran the Zoo (here with accompanying tracks). From the top, voice actor Marvin Miller spins gold from Seuss's splendid rhyming prose, where "a gasket, a gootch, a gusset, and a gherkin" and other such creatures populate the zany zoo of the author's imagination. Following this hit parade of critters is the ever-loving fun songbook from The Cat in the Hat, featuring Seuss's brilliant lyrics married to the tiptop score of Eugene Poddany, who also had a hand in composing the Grinch tunes. The Cat's capers come to life in music, introducing a marvelous cast of characters from Benjiman B. s;Bicklebaum to Little Sally Spingle Sporn and Uncle Terrwilliger. By the time the "Yawn Song" wends it's way from the speakers, bedtime has become the coziest moment of the day and the closing "Dr. Suess's Sleepbook" draws infectious though never bored yawns of its own. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:
Old fashioned sounding music.......2007-03-02
The difference between these songs & Dr. Suess' books are that the simple rhythm of his poetry gets kind of lost in the musical settings of Eugene Poddany, which try to be as funny as Dr. Seuss's rhymes, but invariably aren't, with some exceptions. "Hurry, Hurry, Hurry" is one song where Mr. Poddany matches the music to the lyric very well, using a slowing tempo to reflect the silliness of lyrics like "we better hurry slow." And "My Uncle Terwilliger Waltzes With Bears" is the best song here, a joyful romp that really starts to evoke a picture in the listener's mind of that weird uncle that families try to ignore.
The two tracks that are not songs but are a reading of a Dr. Seuss story (w/ instrumental music added) are OK, they'd be appropriate for a young person to follow along to with the book or just listen to.
I teach music at an elementary school, and I used three songs from this CD and the Cat In the Hat songbook book to help put together a show of Dr. Seuss songs with our 1st graders. A note to any elementary music teachers who might read this: most of the songs on this CD are too difficult for young singers (like my 1st graders), the range of the songs is too wide, and the songs often contain tricky key changes. Older grades such as 3rd, 4th or 5th could handle the songs better. Plus, the singers are adults, both men & women, which isn't as good of a model for children to sing along with as a recording using a good children's group. But, if you absolutely have to put together a show about Dr. Seuss, it can be a helpful resource.

My Childhood Favourite!.......2000-05-27
Some of my favourite songs include "My Uncle Terwilliger Waltzes With Bears" and "The Super Supper March" (it's a long list of favourite foods from the Seuss Kitchen, sung about with great yearning by someone very "hungry, hungry").
Then there's the "No Laugh Race," an interactive song where listener/contestants "stand face to face three inches apart...just stand there and stare and stare...nobody laugh now, don't you dare...wiggle your ears, wiggle your noses, wearing eyebrows wiggle those...but if anybody giggles, out he goes...the laugher is the loser, out he goes!" I had countless moments of fun playing this song game when I was a child.
I just found out this CD is available and haven't yet received it, thus bear in mind that this review is based purely on childhood memories (from 20 years ago). For example, I can't comment on sound quality. But the vividness of my memories must say something about these songs!

Unexplored Beauty.......2005-12-06
The original trio behind QZoo - Levannah, Owl, and Tziki - originate from South Africa, which highly influences their music. For instance, the song "Weeping" is written about apartheid. The entire album takes a peek into the soul, and into life beyond how most of us view it. Their entire feel, all the way down to their look, is meant to provoke the mind. (Seeing them in action in the Child Inside music video is incredible!)
Qkumba Zoo's music, on this album in particular, is very dancey. Upbeat songs like the leading tune "Rain" and "Time of Wonder" leave you feeling happy, while slower, softer ones such as "Cloud Eyes" give off more of a wistful glow. Owl mixes amazing sounds throughout each song, complimenting Levannah's unique and trilling voice, which has a language all its own.
If you truly enjoy this music, you may want to try hunting down their second album "Butterfly Peepl" (under the shortened name "QZoo"). It is even more powerful than the first, considering they went through many changes themselves (losing Tziki to suicide being one of them). It doesn't contain such a heavy dance beat throughout the CD, and gives off the vibe of metamorphosis. :) I haven't heard of anyone being lucky in snagging a copy since their official site went down; I actually find myself making copies for diehard fans.
All in all, Qkumba Zoo is my favorite group in the entire world, and have been so for nearly 10 years now. They have inspired SO much within my life, especially my future career in art. While that may not exactly help you decide to buy this or not, I have to impress that this album should be given a chance. Grab a copy while you can! You can surely buy it for less than $5 online, even though the music included is worth much more than that.

I recently purchased the cd and had quite a laugh listening to some of the songs, but was also surprised to find that my favorite track Xenon - Hellfire, was produced by Richie Hawtin and John Aquivava, two of my favorite producers to this day.
Overall if you were one of the lucky people to enjoy the rave scene early, when there WAS more of an underground thing, you will not necesarily remember these songs in particular, but the feelings they inspired instead.
Overall a good listen if you're into the oldskool.

Deserved More Attention..........2006-02-24
Years later, I met Tamara while working at a hotel in Los Angeles. I mentioned this to her, and she was stunned that I knew! She told me that she and Tia had only done the single, as they soon after got the series "Sister, Sister," and decided to go with that (not surprisingly)!
In any case, this peppy and eclectic album has a fine mixture of uptempo's and ballads. There's the moody ballad "Cloudy with a Chance of Tears" (a very minor chart hit). This ballad has lyrics of teenage-love and angst over it, set to a metaphor of the weather, but it is sung with the passion of someone much older! There's also the charming "Love Lives Right Next Door," that another reviewer mentioned. I always found this tune to be very touching also! And then there's the sprightly, funky "Library Card" (what a cute and clever metaphor for trying out a relationship! I wish this had been released as a single...I think it could've garnered some success). Additionally, "Always" is a very understated, yet very affecting, midtempo groove that has to be experienced. It combines influences of pop and UK-inspired house elements on a low key. And of course, "Yeah Yeah Yeah" is a classic love ballad, not really sounding like it's out of the 50's, but somehow giving that feel-good feeling of the doo-wop era with its rhythms and the girls' shining, love-powered vocals.
For any fans of solid, early-90's R&B, I highly recommend "Just the Beginning"!

Local H first struck during the post-grunge tide of the mid-'90s, and critics often boxed the band's early albums in with the sea of other Nirvana-worshipping artists. With Here Comes the Zoo, though, the Illinois duo sounds less like some wannabe Northwest outfit and more akin to Southern California stoner rock, with a classic rock kick. The psychedelic, sludgy riffs, thudding bass lines, and pressing heaviness to songs like "(Baby) Wants to Tame Me," "Half-Life," "What Would You Have Me Do?" and "Rock 'n' Roll Professionals" (featuring Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age), make Local H sound like a poppier version of bands like QOTSA, Fu Manchu, and Nebula. The harder metal edge and spacy instrumental passages work well on the album, but the band still seem to be struggling between taking the leap of faith to join their more experimental stoner-rock contemporaries and playing less interesting, radio-ready hard-rock songs (like "Hands on the Bible" and "Keep Your Girlfriend"). Hopefully Local H will side with the former, as the album's tripped-out, feedback-heavy ending shows these boys do have some Pink Floyd influences after all, and it'd be a shame to let them go to waste. --Jennifer MaerzCustomer Reviews:
