4 out of 5 stars An updated version of Gregorian Chant.......2007-05-07

This not the chant that one is used to , but is a wholly new way of presenting beautiful music. It is pleasant to listen to and does jar on the senses.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely and absurd.......2007-03-23

God gregorian chant singing songs by Simon and Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, Metallica !!, others. They have more than one disc.

I thought they pulled off this stylistic "mashup" very well. I don't know how seriously you can take the words - it isn't a worship aid. But it is interesting and well done.

I played Nothing Else Matters to my prayer group and some of the younger participants almost fell off their chairs laughing, while others (older people) thought it was nice.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-05-10

If you are at all keen on Gregorian chant music this is a wonderful version of that type of singing with modern, rather than medieval songs. It is haunting music. Very relaxing. I have played this over & over & never get tired of it. I can thoroughly recommend this CD

5 out of 5 stars The Grand Masters!!.......2005-08-01

This album is simply enchanting.... true they chant music that has been made famous by other artists... bt what captivates me is the sound... its dark!!!

5 out of 5 stars Masters of Chant Chapt. II:Gregorian.......2007-04-14

I found the soothing harmonies and lush musicianship of the CD quite relaxing. I found it stimulating in a contemplative manner, stirring rich emotions and thoughts. I have bought other CDs by this group, and will buy more--as time goes by.

1 out of 5 stars I would love to listen to it, but ..........2006-11-16

... note the warning (which I didn't spot) that the disc is copy-protected. On the disc cover itself it notes that it cannot be played on a computer -- meaning no ripping the music to your PC (to listen to yourself) or to your MP3 player (to listen to yourself). Which makes its utility almost nil.

If you're only going to listen to this on a CD player, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Otherwise, you're out of luck.

5 out of 5 stars Just beautiful.........2005-10-14

I first heard this music while looking around in a store called Enchantments while in Maine over the summer. I asked the employees what this music was, & they pointed out the Gregorian Masters of Chant CDs. I own the 2nd & 3rd CDs & plan to buy The Dark Side very soon.

To be brief, this CD is amazing! I listen to it all of the time. The singing is just beautiful, & these guys did an awesome job at these songs. My favorite is Babylon, because is sounds eerie, but beautiful, at the same time. Wish You Were Here & Stairway to Heaven sound amazing as well. The whole CD sounds amazing!

I'd recommend this CD, along with the rest of the Gregorian Masters of Chant CDs, to anyone who's looking for some music that would be great to sit & relax to. I have enjoyed their CDs very much, & their CDs definitely earn at LEAST 5 stars! =D *Gives 2 thumbs up*

5 out of 5 stars Stunning..........2005-10-03

The first Gregorian Album i bought. Fromt he first track "Moment of Peace" i fell in love with it. It is so "atmospheric" listening to it in the dead of night transports you to a Church, a feeling of being surrounded by Holistic sounds.

Babylon is also good, givign an eerie sense o the song.

Overall a good album to listen to. It spurred me to buy the other albums as well. =)

5 out of 5 stars Masters Of Chant Is Back!.......2002-11-01

After moving to Germany, I was introduced to the Gregorian Masters of Chant 1 & II and was thrilled to hear many of my favorite songs arranged in wonderful styles, making me love them all the more. I immediately let other friends in on these fantastic releases and I've been anticipating the Masters of Chant III release. I'm very pleased with their latest selections. Sarah Brightman again lends her beautiful voice to enchanting versions HIM's Gothic `Join Me.` For those fans who haven't yet seen the songlist, here it is:

Join Me
Be
Blasphemous Rumours
Only You
Blue Monday
Sacrifice
Ordinary World
Fields Of Gold
Before The Dawn
I Won't Hold You Back
Wicked Game
Out Of The Cold
Join Me (Chill Out Version)

Gregorian has once again created an album full of moving and well-paced pieces such as Neal Diamond's `Be,` Depeche Mode's `Blasphemous Rumours,` Yaz's `Only You,` and New Order's `Blue Monday.`

Fans of Elton John, Duran Duran, Sting & Chris Isaak will appreciate these Gregorian versions of some of their most memorable ballads. `Fields of Gold` is a real compliment to Sting and was one of the reasons I snatched up the album the moment I saw it! Toto's `I Won't Hold You Back` is a touching arrangement bringing back many memories.

I've read many reviews of the first two Master Of Chant albums and would like to ask fans if they know the orginal artists for `Breathe` and `Make Us One` which have been featured on alternative releases of the first Masters of Chant album.

For you Gregorian fans, this is another must-have! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Yeah, they other reviewers are right: GET THIS ONE!.......2001-01-10

I went to Spain and came back to the U.S. and looked for female flamenco vocalists. I went to my local new/used CD store and returned almost all of the cheesy compilations I got my hands on. Based on the reviews here, I got this one and I thought that because it was from old records, it'd be more along the lines of an "educational" CD you don't listen to so often because of the quality of sound.

In fact, I even waited to take the plastic wrap off because I figured I might just skip it and send it back since I'd bought so many other things---I figured I was ahead by loving Carmen Linares and Virginia Rodrigues (she's Brazilian and not doing flamenco stuff--check her out).

Ah! But I was wrong! Even after one initial listening when I was preoccupied, I stopped and actually listened because these other folks here are right: it IS different. There's a spontaneous and live feel, and so you don't care or notice anything about there not being "stereo" or "base" so you can turn it up full blast (like CARMEN LINARES' strong and beautiful flemenco CD).

The songs are fun, energetic, sweet and sexy and don't all sound alike and you'll probably find a favorite or two right away. Sometimes with some music it takes a few listens, but I don't think you'll have to wait for any of these to "grow" on you.

I want to SEE what this woman LOOKS like and I can't believe such wild and beautiful energy can actually leave this world. But more than that, I can't believe that if she's also the amazing dancer I hear she is, that we have to unearth her name and scrounge around to find images of her dancing and only one CD available.

5 out of 5 stars The Queen of the Gypsies at her Best!.......2000-05-01

La Reina del Sacremonte, will always be remembered and well respected. She is and always will be the undesputed best at what she did, no other then or since can compare. Feel the magic, and let the Duende take over you. And yes that is Carmen Amaya with the fancy foot work and aluring voice. With Famouse Flamenco guitarist Sabicas at her side this album deserves two thumbs up, and 5 stars! "OLE! VIVA LA REINA DE LOS GITANOS"

5 out of 5 stars If you buy only one flamenco disc........1999-11-22

The classic of Flamenco records. Carmen Amaya and her family/troupe with the Grand Master Sabicas on guitar. A compilation of her 3/4 records from the Decca of the 50's. Yes that is a woman doing that heelwork. This is traditional Flamenco at its best. I must have 100 records/ CD,s-nothing else like it. Nothing else has approached it since. The quality is just OK-seems to have been transferred from scratched LP's (a few cuts are from the original very old 78 and are an archive treasure).

Chorégrapie was a book by Raoul-Auger Feuillet published in 1700 that depicted dance movements using symbols rather than mere words, and it changed the way choreographers approached their art. Motions could be recorded for all time showing the movement of feet within bar-lines indicating tempos, and symbols stood for leaping, turning, pointing the toe, arm positions, etc. More than 300 dances were notated, and this allowed courts all over Europe to emulate what was going on in the Royal Court of France, the dance center of the world. This information is fascinating but unnecessary for enjoying the music played here. Mostly by Lully and Campra, the music was chosen by Feuillet to show off the various styles in use at Court, and Andrew Lawrence-King on the Baroque triple harp plays it all with such skill and love that the mind reels. Graceful and dynamic by turns, virtuoso Lawrence-King gets the most astonishing collection of sounds out of one instrument: the CD is never boring or repetitive. There are knock-down percussive moments, graceful arpeggios, and everything in between. The dynamics can sound rich and dark or ethereal. A piece by Marin Marais will be familiar to fans of that composer even in this arrangement, and a Passacaille from Lully's Armide sounds, oddly, like a Boccherini fandango. This is a wonderful surprise. --Robert Levine

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars tempest on tempo.......2007-05-14

This recording is very valuable to anyone working with the notations in Choregraphie, regardless of opinions on tempi. However, I am surprised with many of the tempi for the dances and I ask myself, " How can such basic questions still be in the air after all the research and all the practice of current scholarship and performance?" Such an important recording as this illuminates the lack of communication among dance practioners in the early dance field.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-03-26

I really loved this CD. Of course its not pure Gregorian and guess what they're not real monks. But the harmonies and instrumentation are first rate. I was very impressed and I'm a self proclaimed music snob.

4 out of 5 stars Medieval, relaxing, beautiful..........2006-01-28

When I first got this CD I didn't bother listening to it much because I thought it was slightly pathetic, as in my 13-year-old immature mind, back then music to me wasn't music if it wasn't beat-inspired and/or on the radio.

A very close-minded opinion. However, I finally began to listen to it, probably around the same time that I finally realised that radio music, Britney Spears and Tatu wasn't all it was cracked up to be (in fact, it sucked). So I opened my mind to other, far more satisfying and imaginative melodies (enter Delerium, Enigma, Balligomingo, Dead Can Dance etc), and my Gregorian love affair had begun.

This music is beautiful and awe-inspiring. I don't love every track on it, but many of them deserve honourable mentions. "Still I'm Sad" is my favourite track for it's beautiful melody, dreamy chants and pipes and hugely tragic undertone. It's probably the most medieval track, and the most sorrowful, and brings to mind the Lady of Shalott and other arthurian legends which inevitably ended in tragedy. In a similar vein is "Scarborough Fair" which is lovely but lacks the despairing sadness that appeals so much in "Still I'm Sad". Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence" holds up well 'Gregorianised', once you get past the fact that medieval monks are singing about neon lights and subway walls. "Losing my Religion" I have indeed heard and loved by REM and I can understand why people shy away from it's Gregorian version in disgust, but really, you should give it a go. Gregorian give it a very medieval twist, it's slower and it just fits somehow. Remember, Gregorian only ever choose songs suitable for Gregorian chanting (in a particular note), so "Losing my Religion" was obviously one to fit their style and voices.

Thats not to say that Gregorian don't have their duds. I really disliked "Tears in Heaven", "Fade to Grey", and "Don't Give Up". They just didn't have any spark of interested for me. Of course, the reason behind that is possibly due to the fact that I don't like the original versions of the songs either, so I skip over those songs every time.

This version of Masters of Chant Volume I is not as good as others. Three of my favourite tracks are missing: "Sebastian", "Brothers in Arms" and "Save a Prayer" which are both incredibly other-worldly and tragically beautiful. That's the only reason I'm giving this album 4 stars... it doesn't showcase the first Gregorian CD as it should, with their best songs.

If you can work your way past the contemporary songs sung in medieval chants then you are giving yourself a treat. If not, then it's only you who is missing out, but at the same time, I can't exactly say that I blame you. I beheld the CD with more than a little trepidation at one time as well, but I allowed myself to get past that, and *gasp* dare I say, even to enjoy many of the Gregorian covers far more than the originals. It's a beautiful CD, and while it does have it's low points (or more like, "uninteresting" points), it has enough beautiful, mystical and enchanting melodies to keep any open-minded individual's interest, provided they first give it the chance it deserves.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful sound.......2005-06-08

A pleasant surprise, and its turned out to be one of my favorite CD's-I love the gregorain chant and bringing it to modern tunes is just lovely-I'll be buying all their CD's!

2 out of 5 stars Intersting, but radically sound engineered.......2004-02-10

It's an interesting concept, but all the voices sound like they have been sanitised and tweaked by sound engineers, giving a false quality.

I found Masters of Chant on the net and listened to them on a lark, and it was one of the best discoveries that I have made. I had been searching for something in music that had depth of feeling and when I played the Sound of Silence it moved my soul. I have introduced others to it and they have all been pleased and, with me, surprised with how obscure the music is. It disappoints me that I have been unable to find Masters of Chant in large record stores. I recommend Masters of Chant to anyone who, like me, is left dissatisfied with the popular music industry.
