4 out of 5 stars Spooky Tooth: That was Only Yesterday.......2006-02-02

A fond memory, blast from the past. Remembering the two "hits" (at least in my mind) :"Waitin' for the Wind" and "Evil Woman" I was struck with how two voices can cooperate and augment a band's vocal sound. Overall, some of the material is weak, but their ideas and presentation deserve credit. Luther Grosvernor on guitar has some moments as do vocalists Gary Wright(later "Dreamweaver") and Mike Harrison.

5 out of 5 stars Folk Metal.......2006-01-07

Though not as complete as a "Best Of" should be (it has nothing from "Witness" or "The Mirror"), still it contains most of "Spooky Two" (excluding only "I've Got Enough Heartaches") and all the highlights from "It's All About", and "The Last Puff". It also includes (an edited) "Prayer" which is a snippet from "Ceremony" (and probably all you need) and last but not least: "Cotton Growing Man" from "You Broke My Heart, So I Busted Your Jaw".

5 out of 5 stars Get This And SPOOKY TWO First.......2005-01-05

This CD and SPOOKY TWO are the first two CDs to buy by English rockers Spooky Tooth. Combining the influences of Traffic, The Band, Procol Harum, Cream, Hendrix, and the Jeff Beck Group, and boasting two great singers- Mike Harrison and Gary Wright- who took the Memphis-Chicago-Texas-St. Louis-Muscle Shoals-Detroit-New Orleans-Kansas City blues/R&B/soul vocal sound, blended in a bit of the Band's Richard Manuel, and topped it off with the influences of other English rock singers like Jack Bruce, Steve Winwood, Gary Brooker, and Rod Stewart, Spooky Tooth created an original, progressive sound that displayed their affinity for black music while pointing towards something totally new, influencing such AOR bands as Foreigner. These guys could have stayed together for ages, but individual egos drove them apart quickly, and although they reunited for a couple of albums in 1973-74, they were never better than in their original incarnation.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to a great band, but incomplete.......2003-01-08

I would have made this a two-disc set and included a LOT more material from You Broke My Heart, Witness and The Mirror, the band's last three albums with Gary Wright (who WAS Spooky Tooth} and Mick Jones (who founded Foreigner after Spooky Tooth split). Leaving off the early, pre-Spooky Two stuff like Society's Child would have left more room for the later material, which is far superior. If you can afford it, I would recommend getting Spooky Two along with the import releases of You Broke My Heart and Witness. If that's too much of a financial strain, then by all means, buy this CD, since it includes almost all of Spooky Two and will introduce you to one of the greatest hard rock bands ever. One listen and you will know right away where Foreigner and Journey came from.

5 out of 5 stars A True "Best of" Collection.......2002-07-24

For those unfamiliar with Spooky Tooth (and there are a lot of you out there), think of a cross between the psychedelic-soul of Traffic and "Beggar's Banquet"-era Rolling Stones. Spooky Tooth was one of the most underrated bands on the British blues-rock scene.

Fortunately, "That Was Only Yesterday" is the perfect sampler of Spooky Tooth's sound. Unlike most "Best of" collections, this CD takes more material from better albums (including all but one track from their masterpiece "Spooky Two") and less material from weaker ones. The result is truly the BEST of a great unknown band.

4 out of 5 stars Gentle on the psyche.......2007-05-17

I keep this CD at work, and my office-mates request it more than any other CD on my desk. The amount of familiar tunes in this collection makes it accessible to everybody. Each piece is performed with grace; it will compliment the more esoteric guitar music in anyone's collection. Kaori Muraji lets each piece unfold like a soft summer night. This album is paced throughout so that it plays gently, and quietly maintains momentum. It makes for very enjoyable listening. Muraji can be a dynamic player. Live, she is very in the moment; typically you can see the music moving through her body and the mood of the music on her face. Always there is a serenity to her. You'll feel it on this CD as well. There are some beautiful treatments of Theodorakis and Takemitsu, but it was also nice to hear a pop tune like "The Last Waltz."
Even though my tastes tend towards more dramatic performances (works by The Assad Brothers or Yang Xue Fei), I've really enjoyed this collection. It would make a good gift item both for the serious guitarist (Muraji's technique and interpretations are impeccable) or the casual listener. Your mother would love to get this CD, especially if she's a guitarist. Show her you love her and give her a copy.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two albums on one CD.......2001-11-16

Allan Clarke, lead singer of The Hollies for 30 years, ventured out on his own with a handful of solo albums in the 1970's. Clarke's always had one of the most recognizable voices in the pop/rock business (remember "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother"?), and this CD also shines with his unique vocals.

This release includes two full albums, originally recorded in 1978 and 1979, minus one (inferior) track. Both "I Wasn't Born Yesterday" and "Legendary Heroes" were cut in Los Angeles with some of the finest studio musicians around at the time, serving as a perfect, professional background for Allan Clarke's outstanding vocal abilities.

Personally, I've always liked the first album better, as the later release suffered from an overdose of rather awkward, edgy compositions (almost all of the tracks were written by Allan Clarke with Gary Benson). Occasionally HOLLIES fans will miss some of the magic harmonies here, but all in all this 19-track CD will provide for 70 minutes of timeless pop music. Personal favorites are "Hope" and "Shadow in the Street" from "I Wasn't Born..." as well as "Walls" from "Legendary Heroes".

5 out of 5 stars A must-listen for Hollies fans and Allan Clarke fans.......1999-03-08

It took a couple of listens to fully appreciate this CD, but I find that I really enjoyed it after listening several times. Most of the songs are a departure from his work with The Hollies, and that may at first detract from your enjoyment of the CD, but listen without prejudice and you will find that the lyrics and the music are really good. I hope that anyone who wasn't sure whether or not to buy this CD will go ahead and get it; it will be well worth your while.

5 out of 5 stars Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09

This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.

2 out of 5 stars Skampa Quartet is great - the singer... yikes.......2005-07-28

I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.

    Album Description

In the year and a half since its humble beginnings as a home-recorded and home-burned CD, Rebecca Hall Sings! has turned a lot of heads. Listeners are drawn in, no doubt, by Rebecca's deep, resonant alto, with an irresistible hint of twang. But as the album unfolds, Rebecca's songwriting takes center stage, echoing the timeless themes of Appalachian ballads, the concise storytelling of classic songwriters such as Townes van Zandt, and the delicate arrangements of early British folk-rock. Solely by word of mouth, Rebecca Hall has already gained many admirers-from Radio Thrift Shop's Laura Cantrell, to the Byrds' Roger McGuinn, to fans around the globe.

Remastered and repackaged here for wide release, Rebecca Hall Sings! will soon take its place as a classic folk album.

    5 out of 5 stars A must.......2007-01-17

Rootsy, deep, chilling, joyous ... As heard on XM radio, this folkster deserves a major label, legions of fans and a long, long life for more musical fodder. A rare 5 stars! What's next?????

    5 out of 5 stars Rebecca Hall Sings...AND HOW!.......2002-08-08

Nowadays, where modern music is usually either an electronically programmed danceable rhythm with a few stockpile lyrics tossed on top, or an unmelodic concrete wall of distorted overloud power chords for people who just want to thrash and mosh, how refreshing it is to find an artist who still believes in the power and beauty of a well-written song, and who puts total focus into making that song as effective as possible. Rebecca Hall is that kind of an artist.

New York singer-songwriter Rebecca Hall is not your typical modern day folkie. While most of the Apple's self-proclaimed folksingers playing in the Village are little more than jinga-jinga-jing strummers of chord progressions that are either predictable or unimaginative, beneath failed attempt of lyrical poignancy, Rebecca truly paints pictures and tells stories. Her musical backdrop never contradicts her lyrics. Instead both complement each other, working together to add further color to her emotional canvas.

The journey begins with "Hard Way To Learn." In addition to Rebecca's soft, sweet voice, two prime elements of Rebecca's overall sound that will become constant companions throughout the trip make their presence known immediately on this song. One is Rebecca's penchant for minor-key compositions. The other is violinist Rachel Birkin, who along with cellist Chris George, adorns many of the selections with skillful playing that, depending on the track, either makes the smiles wider or adds a further coat of melancholy glazing. "See You Soon" has Rebecca delivering a well-worded kiss-off to a would-be returning name out of her past.

Rebecca then introduces us to the "Man of Poor Fortune," even taking on his character at times. This is, perhaps, the most impressive work featured, as it perfectly replicates the kind of story/minstrel songs that folk artists of the early 1960's were either writing themselves, or plowing through old songbooks to find. Rebecca's tale assumes many voices and takes many turns, some of them quite graphic.

But her knack for lyrics is further exemplified in the next track, "Like You Do," in which she addresses an old acquaintance, lamenting their lack of communication and depth.

She also addresses an enigmatic character in "Not the Same," pointing out the differences between him then and now, using a finger-picking style reminiscent of Paul Simon on his first album with Artie. One longs for the days of vinyl elpees after hearing this song, as this would have made a splendid side-closer and curtain dropper (and had Rebecca been around for the early 1960's folk scene, she most certainly would have been on Vanguard.)

The second half kicks off with a joyful country-tinged singalong, "On the Other Side," co-written by her husband Ken Anderson (who also contributes some fine harmonies to this track and others) in which she sings about leaving troubles behind with the help of the light from above. Some Neil Young style harmonica gives this an extra nice finesse.

But what exactly is to be found on that other side? A sad young heartbroken girl walking by the "Long Black Shore." As mentioned previously, and as this song shows perfectly, Rebecca knows how to tell musical stories, as this song takes us right down to the shore, watching the poor jilted lover stroll in sorrow.

A pair of traditional numbers follows, both showing Rebecca's gift of interpretation. On her truly beautiful reading of "Winter Is Gone," Rebecca begins with simply her voice and acoustic guitar, but as the song progresses, the violins creep in slowly and grow in intensity like dark clouds forming, anticipating a storm on the way. Thankfully, the clouds gently dissipate as the song gently slows to a stop.

Next comes a very original take on the classic "I Know You Rider." Perhaps best known in faster, upbeat versions by numerous artists like The Byrds, The Rose Garden, and most notably The Grateful Dead, Rebecca goes the other way and reverts to a minor key for a dark and mysterious rendition, not too much unlike Simon and Garfunkel's "Benedictus."

Her final selection is another with a country flavor, Ralph Stanley's "Darkest Hour Is Before The Dawn." It's a gentle waltz with gorgeous harmonies, and a fitting number to bring up the houselights with.

Among the many words one could use to describe Rebecca Hall Sings is paradoxical! Her music has a lovely intimate feel, a sense that she's right there in the room with her nylon string guitar, singing just for you, sharing her songs and stories directly. But at the same time, once Rebecca's strumming fingers lead her into a song, she locks herself completely inside of it, lost in the world of her song's character, taking on her (or his, in cases like "Man Of Small Fortune") emotions, not unlike a talented actor stepping into a role. Likewise, Rebecca's music has the true flavor of the Greenwich Village coffeehouse folk music scene to the point that one can practically smell the coffee while listening. But then again, her lyrics often instantly transport us to other lands and more rural settings of back porches and open plains, a hundred miles from Bleeker Street and Washington Square.

'Rebecca Hall Sings' is a perfect Sunday morning album. The music is quite tranquil, and casually and unobtrusively invites the listener to sit back and give the music and lyrics complete attention. I gave Rebecca my complete attention. She awarded me with a wonderful musical journey. I hope we will travel again soon.

If you love the great American popular song repertoire, hurry up and order this CD today! Julie Keim and the musicians on "Only Yesterday" bring these great songs to life with passion and style. I've been hesitant to buy recordings of popular songs by classical artists because I've heard some that sound like the singer is not really into the repertoire, just kind of showing off his/her classical technique. This CD is not like that at ALL. It sounds to me like Julie was born to sing these songs -- but I think she may also have been born to sing Bach, Handel, and the rest. A rare bird she is, with a gorgeous voice and great musical instincts.

This is a really wonderful and nicely programmed collection of truly great American music. The performances are profoundly direct, honest and intimate -- straight to the heart of this music! The sound is clear and the production first rate. I can't recommend this CD highly enough. It stays in my CD players far more often than in the jewel case! This album received 3 first-round GRAMMY nominations in 2004!

A rare breed of singer/songwriter, Jack has the ability to combine the storytelling skill of Jimmy Buffett with the extraordinary melodies of Vince Gill. This CD, "I Should Have Left Yesterday", clearly demonstrates Jack's capacity as both a writer and an artist. From the pop-rock groove of "The House" to the traditional country sound of "My Memory Won't Forget", Jack weaves a musical thread that creates a blanket of music appealing to a wide variety of tastes. Throw in the Latin-rhythms of the title song "I Should Have Left Yesterday" with the sexy undertones of "Heatwave, Heatwave" and you have a virtual tapestry of story and song.
