On Hawaiian Love Songs, George Kahumoku skillfully manages the delicate balancing act of stretching the sonic boundaries of slack-key guitar technique while keeping the music firmly rooted in tradition. On tracks like "The Queen's Prayer," which features a bass-string glissando inspired by the Chantays' surf-guitar classic "Pipeline," Kahumoku's 12-string guitar playing recalls the intricate picking of a young Leo Kottke. On gentler tracks like "Nu'oli" and "Nakalele" he revels in the gorgeous melodies that Hawaiian musicians seem to produce in endless streams. Kahumoku is joined by vocalist Diana Aki for a duet on the tragic love song "Keiki Mahine." Other guest artists include slide-guitar master Bob Brozman and harmonica player Norton Buffalo, who adds a soulful blues wail to "Lei Pikake." Hawaiian Love Songs.......2007-06-27

Just back from a trip to Kauai I obtained this CD with the hope of bringing back some of the peace and relaxation that we experienced there. I thought the intro to the first song was a little different than I was looking for but as I continued listening the song became more and more beautiful. Then the rest of the CD with its gorgeous melodies and simple style made me want to just sit in my papasan chair on my patio and drift off to the islands. This is definitely one of the most beautiful CDs I have ever heard and extremely capable of inducing peace and calmness.

You Gotta Love This Stuff.......2001-04-28

I have been a serious listener of Hawaiian slack key for nearly 25 years, and this is some of the best I have ever heard. Slack key music is like blues in that it is based on a rather simple set of musical ideas which allow each performer an infinite space for interpretation and feeling. The happening thing is not so much the notes or chord changes that are played as the honestly and rightness of each musicians approach. At its best slack key can invoke some of the purest musical listening moments available; at its worst it can drift toward a polished sentimentality, which is often quite boring. This album happily achieves the former and not the latter. With every single note Kahumoku demonstrates his sincere love of traditional music, his wonderful guitar artistry and his tremendous musical judgement. His vocals have a raw tonal quality which is perfect for these songs and very authentically Hawaiian. Overall this effort is distinguised by a natural, unadorned quality and a trust of the music itself, which is often lost when Hawaiian muscicians enter the studio. Kudos are due to George Winston for allowing the music to be what it is and avoiding the hoaky production standards that ruin a lot of Hawaiian recorded music.

This is really one of the most exciting thing I have come across since I first heard the Gabby Pahinui Band back in the late seventies. If you have never heard real Hawaiian slack key before this would be a great introduction. If you are already into the genre, this one was made with you in mind!

CROSSOVER DOES NOT WORK.......2005-03-07

Some interesting tracks but this is a Caballe album and should be reviewed as such. Fans of other artists should look at their artists' own releases and not this one. Caballe is a great operatic soprano but the crossover does not work for me. The classical operatic training does not do justice to the songs which require an altogether different voice. Finally, the mixing is very poor. Clearly the tracks are recorded at different times, studios and with different equipment. This makes it difficult to balance the songs from an audio quality point of view.

Nice album overall, Great interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody by Bruce Dickinson(Iron Maiden's singer), making it a memorable version.

Caballe and other great voices.......2003-03-19

Interesting mix of talent but over all Caballe and Gino Vannelli shine. They are both superb vocalists. Also love the version of Sailing - great song. This is a great investment, especially if you are a Gino Vannelli fan.

Montserrat does it again!.......2003-02-01

I haven't heard the whole cd. But I believe Montserrat to be one of the greatest sopranos ever. She certainly has great vocal beauty, power, and class. And she has probably the most unique voice in all of opera. Nearly every recording that has her voice on it is great.

Bruce Dickinson does no justice to bohemian rhapsody in the duet . Bruce Dickinson is clearly one of the worst vocalists ever to curse the planet. I do like the band iron maiden but Bruce Dickinson just isn't even close to the greatness of Freddy Mercury.

Fresh takes on good music.......2006-03-05

Debbie Davies does a great job here with John Mayall classics including "Room to Move" and "Chicgao Line". And a strong set of guest stars- Peter Green, Mick Taylor, and James Cotton all add appeal to a really strong set. Her versions are not meant to be exact copies but more affectionate tributes.She plays to her strengths not just the song's strengths. She's not going to get anyone to play Mayall's harmonica solo from "Room To Move" so she wisely steers clear of that but fnas of Mayall and Davies will enjoy this as well as fans of good blues.

JOHN MAYALL IS NOT AS GOOD AS DEBBIE DAVIES.......2004-06-18

What I mean is a CD of material by, or picked, by Debbie Davies is better than suff by Mayall. The record is still good. However, it lacks the loud, raw, distorted sound of Mayall, which is his trademark, at least on his early material. James Cotton is a bore, so is Mick Taylor. Peter Green's playing is interesting, with those jazz chords. The best guitar is by Debbie herself on the last song, written by her. On this offering there are too many run of the mill numbers. Still, if you are a fan, you will like it, especially the way Davies copies Mayall's vocal style, and adds it to her own.

Key to Love.......2003-07-01

Saw it, Heard it, Bought it! I have 4 other of her CD's, Austin motel, Love the game, Picture this, and Home sick for the road with Kenny Neal and Tab Benoit and I love them all. This one is no exception. Well recorded, sonics are good. Great selection of Mayall tunes with great interpretations by Davies and her quest players. This one will not disappoint you, well worth a listen and highly recommened.

A Fitting Tribute To The Master.......2003-02-17

On her new album Debbie Davies pays a fitting tribute to the great John Mayall. It has been a long time coming and kudos to her for recognizing the oft overlooked Mayall. Her band and the guest musicians-Mick Taylor, James Cotton, and Peter Green are all in excellant form. To make a long story short the album is superb so go out and buy it.
