Captain Kangaroo knows how to get the attention of a child and gives an excellent reading of the text, but Stokowski insisted on also having an orchestral version following the vocal which was on the flip side of the old Lp. I would play the two sides for my eight year old daughter and ask her to listen for the duck, bird etc. and she loved it. Now that she is thirty, she asked where her old record was so that she could play it for her son and was delighted to find that it had been transfered to CD.

I had the fortune that a friend of mine introduced me to this artist. Since that moment I began a search of her discography. In my country is very difficult to find it, but finally got all her CD's. This is her first solo album, and I have no words to express the power of the songs. You have to listen to taste it by yourselve. A song called "My ballad" is in a foreign language but it is not a problem. When music and voice reach your heart you don't need to understand, just feel.

    5 out of 5 stars Azerbaijani Jazz?.......2003-11-22

Aziza is a young woman with beautiful long curly hair from the ex-Soviet country now named Azerbaijan. Her full name is Aziza Mustafa Zadeh. This is her 1st of 6 CD's produced for the West. This CD intermixes Eastern European & Middle Eastern musical themes for solo Jazz piano, & on a few songs Aziza chants with the music. She is fast fingered with notes running up & down the keys with melodies never heard before. This CD is for the experimental free Jazz crowd with their feet still on the ground. Another PhiloX-JD3 hard to get, great CD, here at Amazon.com.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!.......2005-11-28

Alim Qasimov is ultimately the best musician to represent Azerbaijani classical music (mugham). His voice and performance are miraculous, the instrumentalists acompanying him are very skillful and enthusiastic and the musical arrangement is great. The songs selected here - mostly love songs - are highly expressive and dynamic. Qasimov's daughter's voice is beautiful and her performance is good, but her voice is not as powerful as her father's. The liner notes are very sufficient.

I can confidently claim that this is one of the best albums of Azerbaijani classical mugham and Qasimov's music.

Alim Qasimov - Love's Deep Ocean

I have spent many evenings mesmerized by truly incredible performances during my years as a musician and music lover. But rarely have I been as moved and transfixed as an evening I spent at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago two and a half years ago, when I was privileged so see one of Alim Qasimov's first performances in the US. He is a mesmerizing performer...totally committed to his performances and to the Mugham style of singing, of which he is the foremost proponent. His dramatic gestures resemble nothing so much as the gestures of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan...and when the music begins to really move, he seems almost to levitate. Unfortunately, the first few Qasimov CDs I bought after that concert only hinted at the power for this singer in a live setting. However, the current CD, Love's Deep Ocean comes closer than anything I have yet heard to capturing the unique power of this treasured singer.

Qasimov is the greatest representative of the Azerbaijani classical music called Mugham. Mugham, like much other Middle Eastern influenced music, is based on a repertoire of songs passed down throughout the centuries upon which a singer improvises using traditional scales and melodic patterns. The art is a difficult one to master. The lyrics of Mugham songs are often either passionate love songs or spiritual songs influenced by the Sufis...and like the Sufis it is often difficult to separate the secular from the sacred in this music. Qasimov wrings every ounce of emotion from each phrase. At times the voice is so clear and piercing that it sends chills up and down the spine. Other times he is gentle and consoling. I find it impossible not to be deeply moved by this marvelous music, especially the long track Ey Encanlar, which seems to grow in intensity with each new phrase.

Qasimov is backed up on this disc by the traditional ensemble of tar (a long necked lute) and kemenche (a spike fiddle). In addition the singer plays a frame drum. The ensemble is expanded on this CD by the inclusion of other instruments not traditionally associated with pure Mugham including the duduk and a version of the clarinet. Qasimov's daughter also sings on many of the tracks. While her voice doesn't not have the power of her father's it is nonetheless very effective. And in the climaxes of the songs, when the two singers reach a unison, the effect is devastating.

If you have any interest in music of the world, this CD is an absolute must-have! Qasimov is the only world music singer to take up the fallen mantle of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. And if you ever get the chance to hear him live....run!!! You'll be glad you did.

    5 out of 5 stars Yow!.......2002-10-29

Alim Qasimov has one of the most amazing voices you're likely to hear during your time here on Earth. I've been told that he almost leaps in the air when he sings, and when you hear this you'll understand why. I wish I could understand the lyrics, as the emotion apparent in his voice sounds like the type that might destroy you were you to grasp the full weight of its meaning. Nevertheless, as sonic/sensual experiences go, listening to Alim (and his daughter to a certain extent) can hardly be surpassed. If the climax of "Bagishlamani" doesn't move you, then you're obviously some sort of dead-to-the-world piece of scum.

5 out of 5 stars The world's two best living voices.......2000-05-14

In this CD Alim Qasimov and his daughter Ferghana set a new standard of excellance in both vocal perfection and passion. Unfortunately most of musician's admirers cannot appreciate the beaty of lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible - My new favorite!.......2000-05-01

I can't believe this guy is not better known in the US! He rivals Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in both voice and passion. I have listened to this CD many times in the last few weeks since I received it, and I'm still not tired of it. His daughter sings and plays on some tracks, and her performance is also awe-inspiring. The instrumentalists are very accomplished, as well. There is a pure percussion track on the recording that knocks your socks off! I highly recommend it.

For his second album, Abdelli, an Algerian singer-mandola (a type of oud-lute) virtuoso from the Kabyl (an ancient Berber tribal group), has again pre-recorded his blues-inflected, slightly world-weary tenor vocals and some rhythm guide tracks before sending them to collaborators around the world to have their way with. Producer Thierry Van Roy kept everybody else in the dark until the final mix was assembled. Harp-like Andean guitars, piercing woodwinds, accordions, and assorted fiddles weave in and out, bringing with them dauntingly diverse sounds from the Andes, Africa, and the Arab world, as well as echoes of assorted medieval European styles (some of which originated in the Middle East anyway), Algerian Raï, and the Silk Road. Given the piecemeal nature of the production, the almost entirely acoustic arrangements are astonishingly organic and warm, robustly engaged but also airy and spacious. Even longtime band-mates performing face-to-face seldom achieve such a combination of unity and fearless individuality. -- Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait! In gold...........2003-08-02

One insomniac night in 1995 listening to BBC World Service I heard a track which made me sit up & glue my ear to the muffled MW signal to desperately catch the name of the artist. Remember that feeling?! I scribbled it on piece of paper & ordered the album the next day. It was from 'New Moon' by Abdelli, a Berber musician exiled in Belgium. If you can wear out CDs, my copy needs at least a buff-up with the Brasso. So at last, 8 years later, more music from this man with the one-off voice. 'New Moon' had a character all its own, combining rhythmns and scales from an ancient tradition with contemporary keyboards and western instruments. Above it all, Abdelli's soaring, imploring voice as the extraordinary commonality. 'Among Brothers', 3 years and 4 continents in the making has quite a different character. It eschews overt western sounds for a broader, richer palette of strings, woodwinds, reeds & percussion, recorded outdoors in many cases using specially-developed microphones. The result is a more diverse-sounding album but with a new edge of colours and sounds. I would also say with more consistent, developed material than 'New Moon'. It is, in truth, a fantastic recording, full of the detail Peter Gabriel hints at but here it's all real, from a real world. Neat eh? I know I'll play this record for years. How can you put a price on music like this? In a world where 'soul' music now lacks that very essence, music like this created with such love, joy, sadness, yearning & fun is literally priceless. Thanks to all the 'brothers' who played on this; thanks Thierry Van Roy for producing & playing, and thanks again Abdelli for your eternal voice.

            Album Description

Best of Zoroofchi is the first compact disk ever produced in "Azari" language. This album is a collection of most popular old and new Azari songs, performed by Zoroofchi's rich and warm operatic voice, accompanied by "The Azarbaijan's National Orchestra." This album will fascinate you. Some additional instruments were added later, during re-mastering of the original music. In this recording we tried hard to preserve the authenticity of the original works.
