Inspired Music.......2007-06-11

This CD is my first experience with Nestor Torres' music. I found it to be a beautiful, gentle, collection of flute tunes, but not boring at all. It is clear that Mr Torres was spiritually inspired to create this music, but he is also an excellent musician, so the music isn't easy listening music. It contains interesting melodies and some unusual vocal and instrumental accompaniment. I will certainly be looking for more of this talented flutist's music now that I've heard this CD.

I have been a Nestor Torres Fan since I saw him with the Philly Pops(twice) and then in a small club venue in Boston! This CD combines his wonderful latin jazz rhythms with his spiritual side which he talks about freely. An unusual combination on one recording but it certainly WORKED well for me!(A jazz lover and a yoga lady)(Smile)

Yo adquirí este CD en Enero 2006 y se me pidió por parte de Amazon una revisión del mismo, la cual envié en inglés y nunca publicaron. Como se la perdieron, habré de acotar en nuestro idioma que todo mi interés se focalizó por "Fresca", una tonada que resume lo que es una mujer que pica los 50 y se mantiene en forma por su disposición al jogging. Yo le decía que el tema me sugiere la frescura de los espacios abiertos en medio de una selva tropical. Para ella, una playa llena de sol y el agradecimiento por la vida. Me extendí...? "Fresca" lo merece, sin demeritarle un milímetro a la excelencia restante de quien me volví un fan. Gracias, Nestor. Sugiero "Talk to Me" que es como una secuencia con sabor de salsa discreta para "Fresca".

un cd inigualable, me encantaron las melodias de este artista, lo escuche un dia por casualidad y luego cayo en mi poder su cinta y lo escuche hasta cansarme, me encantan las melodias rapidas como el dorado, su ritmo es fresco, atrayente, juvenil, tiene encanto y se deja escuchar naturalmente, sin sentirse forzado o atrapado en una ritmica sin salida. muy buen cd.

I first heard the name and music of Nestor Torres on one of those "listen to a sample" CD players in a store. It took me about 3 seconds of the first track to know I was onto something, someone. Every track is infectious, fetching, sensual! And then -- the mark of real musician -- Nestor reached back to 1939 and pulls out the old Judy Garland standard and for nearly ten minutes spins gold into that journey over the rainbow. What a class performance! Not many flautists around... so Nestor's talents are even more enjoyable. If you like it dancin' Latin, get this one and check out his other CD's, too!

Sin Palabras ( Without Words ).......2005-01-31

"Dance of the Phoenix and talk to me" were the only CD's that I purchased by this artist. Circa 1996 - 1997? I dunno, it's definitely been a while. This CD was recommended to me by way of a friend. (Dude, if you're reading this review, consider your CD gone! Heh-heh ) In one of my previous reviews, I complain about jazz artist who dabble in hip-hop in an attempt to add some flavor to their tracks. Some pull it off rather nicely, others fall short. In the case of Nestor Torres he pulled it off nicely. Now for my favorites: (1) Sin Palabras, (2) Labios Dulzes, (3) Regalame La Silla Donde Te Espere and (4) Pura Brisa.
Regalame La Silla Donde Te Espere is my favorite upon favorites. The name of the actual artist exscapes me but I'm sure I've heard this song while listening to my music channels on DMX. While reviews for Sin Palabras were somewhat low, I think it's worthy of 5 stars. Why? Because it's relaxing, funky, fun and allows me to reflect. What's the reason for purchasing music in the first place? Got cash?

Definitely better than 1 star..........2004-07-08

Although this cd is a bit different in that it adds some r&b type beats to quite a few of the songs, I have no problem with that. Nothing wrong in adding a different twist to the smooth jazz genre. Heck, guys like Paul Taylor have made a living doing their own style so why can't a flutist like Nestor change it up a bit? I didn't give this cd 5 stars because it didn't necessarily floor me, but it's still a pretty good cd and definitely worthwhile to add to your smooth jazz collection.

A waste of talent.......2004-06-07

What a waste of talent. Having heard Nestor since the 70's, I cannot believe he has fallen into the instrumental hip-hop pop commercial smooth music, it is not even jazz. Nestor is one of the best flutists in latin music, be it latin jazz or salsa.If you want to listen to Nestor at his best, get "Morning Ride" or "Dance Of The Phoenix". Or listen to him as a sideman in the 70's Orquesta Novel albums, Batacumbele's "Con Un Poco De Songo" or in Cachao's Master Sessions Vol. 1 & 2.

If you are into instrumental, hip-hop, pop, commercial, smooth music, this is an excellent album, but if you are a hardcore latin jazz or salsa fan don't waste your money.

Generally impressed.......2006-07-13

Like the other reviewer, I enjoyed the title piece, Ye Shall Have a Song, Alleluia, Felices Ter, and also The Last Invocation. I think it's a worthwhile cd to buy, simply because Thompson is unique in his composition and this group can sing it better than most. While not possessing the weight of the aforementioned Robert Shaw Chorale, they do have great clarity without sacrificing vowel purity. Think of an American version of The Cambridge Singers only one step below in regards to overall quality.

The Peaceable Kingdom is a hard set to get through, but it does have some fantastic moments, the best being at the end of Ye Shall Have a Song. Some people think that piece and the overall recording has too much reverb (they sang it in some huge church), but I disagree. It's the kind of sound that gives you a rush when you hear the power and quality behind the sound! The bases are above average, tenors wonderful on Felices Ter and The Last Invocation - and the men blend wonderfully within the group. The same is true for the women. The altos are lovely, and the sopranos perform admirably, finding the balance between heavy screaming and too light singing. Thompson's layers are clearly delineated by each section and each sings its line so that you know where it's going and how it fits with the other three.

The group handles the pieces well and they're written by one of the premier 20th century American composers. For a Randall Thompson fan or a choral music nerd, this cd's a must.

Not the best, but definitely worth it.......2000-07-13

As someone so accustomed to the Robert Shaw choruses and the standard of excellence they acquired and established for future choral ensembles, it is difficult to accept anything less. However, I must say that the American Repertory Singers do an adequate if not excellent job of taking Randall Thompson's works, some more popular than others, and performing them well. Four pieces stick out for me: The Paper Reeds by the Brooks, Ye Shall Have a Song, Alleluia, and Felices Ter. The Peaceable Kingdom has never been a favorite of mine, either listening or performing, but these first two mentioned pieces, performed the way they were by the American Repertory Singers, make it a worthwhile experience. The tempo chosen for both as well as the blend and tonality of the singers does an exceptional job of conveyiing the emotions I think Randall Thompson intended from this set. Alleliua is obviously Thompson's most well-known work on this CD and most certainly one of his best ever composed. I've heard this piece performed at various tempi with various blends and dynamics and have come to determine that it depends on the music it is surrounded by that establishes a particular performance as being necessarily "correct." As heard on this CD, the performance is very good but it is hard to acknowledge it as "great" since the beauty is really in the ear of the beholder and we all personalize what we hear and judge it that way. My first experience with the Medieval-based Felices Ter from the Odes to Horace was at the Los Angeles Master Chorale High School Choral Festival hosted by Paul Salumonovich. I much prefer the performance this group gave on the CD. The tenderness is wonderfully expressed and emotions build to a peak as the piece builds in depth of range and volume toward the close of the piece. It is one I love listening to over and over again. I lost my original copy of this CD but fully intend to repurchase it. As with just about any CD one might purchase, there are moments I would prefer not to be present on this recording. On the whole, though, the CD is a worthy buy by a worthy group deserving of credit for their performance.

I picked this CD up without being familiar with Nestor Torres. At first I loved the renditions of Watermelon Man and Smooth. Eveytime I listen though I come away with another favorite track. Besame Mucho is performed so beautifully here. This is truly a fabulous CD and I am so glad I discovered Nestor Torres' music through it.

A Master Flautist - Lookout Dave Valentin.......2002-10-15

Listened to this album last night, and it blew me away. First time I've heard Nestor, but it won't be the last time. I became an instant fan. Can't wait to catch him in person. His playing sounded flawless, good tone, clear crisp phrasing, and lots of soul in each note. Where has he been? Or where have I been? Two nights ago, I had the opportunity to catch Frank Wess on flute, and marvelled at his performance. In fact, for years (50's), I've been following flute players, and have been hung up on Moody, Lateef, Valentin, Most, Wess, Crawford, and several others. However, this Young Lion stands side by side with the best of them. I believe jazz enthusiasts, especially flute lovers, will delight in listening to all of his recordings. In fact, as soon as I settle down (Nov. 1st)at my new homesite in St. Pete, Florida, I intend to acquire all that he has out there.

Nestor Torres takes you to Paradise.......2006-11-12

Torres is a classically trained musician who gets his sense of melody and timing from playing Cuban dance music, or charanga. He improvises a great deal with stunning and brilliant success--- the focus of his solos are to make you want to smile and dance, and dance you will. His playing is very rhythmic and melodic. His sound is sweet and pure and is influenced by Hubert Laws, an old school African-American flute player who first fused together the disciplines of classical flute playing and improvisation.

Nestor Torres latest release from Shanachie Entertainment ~ "This Side of Paradise", reflects his highly sense of musicianship as the premier Latino instrumentalists in the field of jazz and new age.
