GRAB IT!.......2005-10-08

Until a better compilation comes out - and let's hope there will be more - this is the place to start to explore Jorge Ben Jor's music. I have been totally addicted to this great collection since I first bought it, listening to it, humming it to myself, playing it for friends. Benjor packs more fun and ideas into a 3 minute song than most pop musicians put into an entire album. If you like samba, or bossa nova, or world music, or light jazz, or soul, or just great pop music, you should give this a few listens. He is one of the all-time greats in Brasil, and I hope that someday he can be appreciated in America too.

this album covers alot of material. If you have never heard this incredible artist, this is the perfect cd to get you into him. Benjor is on the same level as artists like caetano, chico buarque, gil. you will enjoy this.

This deserves a spot on any soul/funk fan's shelf. I had Umbagarrauma on a complilation CD and wanted to hear more. I am familiar with other Brazilian styles and the unrelated Rock en Espanol styles but this one is the king. You can party to it, work out, or just groove to this man's genius in your car. I went through the Starbuck's drive through and the kid said,"who is that." Who says the best funk n soul comes out of America? Buy it you won't regret it.

Jorge Ben's sleek vocals and wah-wah funk style applied to samba, latin rhythms and afro-percussion are summary contained in this great album. I, a brazilian fan of black music, do believe in a 'world black music' whose universal conscious jazz also stated long ago, so that now is cheerfully expressed in multicolored palletes of percussions and blues. Jorge Ben also felt the groove as well as Curtis Mayfield did in USA: as Mayfield went through a protestant education, what means 'soul music' in his veins (like Marvin Gaye for example), nevertheless Ben's style is more softly, catholic as old samba can be but wicked as it can be too.

Musically gorgeous and unique, great rhythm, Jorge's voice is amazing, the album has a lot of musical depth, is uplifting, tropical. It's an amazing work of his!

...So I throw this thing in my CD player for the first time and instantly I say to myself "I have NO idea what this guy is saying--but Damn! is this funky."

From the ridiculous, syncopated funk of "Ponta de la Africano (Ummbabarumba)" right into the bubbling bassline intro to track #2 "Hermes..." this things from Brazil straight cooks, man.

I'm not exactly a stranger to Brazilian soul music. But if you are, this is a sweet starting point. Best way to sum it up is a cross-pollination of latin smoke, jb funk, island rhythms and African stylings.

The funk flew outta of Brazil in the 70's so if you ain't hip and you're not sure, start with this Jorge Ben album and keep diggin...

this album is great. jorge ben has a unique guitar style. after you hear a few songs of his, you'll be able to recognize most of his other songs just by hearing the guitar. for instance in his collaboration with gilberto gil (another great cd...and much rawer than this cd), you can easily tell which guitar is gil's and which is jorge's.
this is funky, soulful music. jorge ben has made lots of songs that express black pride and this album has one of the best -- zumbi. he later did another (even funkier) version on africa brasil, but this is the definitive one. overall the cd is well balanced with catchy melodies and a wealth of cool rhythms.
if you already have some interest in brazilian music, definitely grab this one. if you are becoming interested in brazilian music, pick this one up to see how well jorge combines traditional brazilian influences with all the rock and funk that was coming out of the US in the 70s.

I highly recommend this album. Its a twist of funk, soul, bossa and Ben's vocals are outstanding (not to mention his strong guitar). The majority of the songs are good - for me "5 minutes" sends shivers down my spine every time. Track 2 and track 4 are also kicking. The only thing that kinda bothers me is the back up vocals. Some tracks have a child like orchestra in the background, which at first sounds a bit cheesy. But after listening to the album about 20 times - I have to say that it would not be the same with out the vocals.

In my life, I've always been searching for the perfect sound much like a surfer attempts to find the perfect wave. I don't play music, but I listen, I listen with the best of them. My tastes are wide ranging, eclectic and discerning. I'm always open minded, and on the look out for anything I haven't heard but might like.

But even when I've found a sound that I really love, and that sounds like what I've always been looking for(such as Stereolab), a wanderlust always crops up again, and thats how it should be, if we only listened to the same thing we'd become stagnant. That said, even as I go on to other music, I'd always wanted to know that I wouldn't be going on to greater music, that the music I had found was for now the pinnacle of what I'd always wanted to hear.

Jorge Ben is that sound. To me, he is the single greatest musician songwriter in the world that ever was. His sound is utterly unique and majestic, rhythmic, soulfull, spiritual, poetic, perfect. Perfect. Nothing is perfect. Except his music. The only perfect thing in an imperfect universe.

This album is spectacular. I recommend it more highly than any other. Ben is a vocal vertuoso always. A master songwriter. A man who found his inner voice and sound and nailed it down and just couldn't fail to write a mesmerizing rhythmic masterpiece.

Another reviewer here really hit it on the head when he said that Ben went 10 yrs where every year he produced a masterpiece. I have many of those masterpieces. I recommend them all.

Its quite amazing that a musician of this caliber can't even get his albums sold on Amazon. Its really a travesty that I had to go to another rare cd site for Negro E Lindo, Ben, and his collaboration with Gilberto Gil. If you're even reading this and you're American, you've traveled quite a long way off the beaten path and really discovered a musical Shangri-la. Enjoy it. You're in a special place.

THE sound........2003-06-21

This album simply sounds amazing. It's primarily driven by Jorge Ben's ultra-funky guitar playing; imagine choppy funk guitar, but played in a Spanish guitar, with a samba influence to all of it; it's got a really unique sound that really must be heard to be grasped. The one other group I'm familiar with that has a similar guitar sound is Café Tacuba (especially their first two albums), but it's not quite the same.

The rest of the band is also wonderful; the drum kit and synth really drive songs like "Os Alquimistas Estão Chegando" over the top. The songs are wonderfully composed and arranged. They make a sophisticated virtue of straightforwardness; or in other words, it's amazing how such sophisticated songs can sound so simple. Jorge's singing shows great variety and effortless spontaneity. I was going to list my favorite tracks, but realized that except for "Brother", they're all great...A must-have.

Jorge Ben's fab second album, recorded in 1964. Mainly acoustic samba material, but with jazzy backing by some of Brazil's best jazz combos (Tamba Trio, J.T. Meireilles, etc.) Great stuff. This is a long-overdue reissue which, knowing how fickle the Brazilian record industry can be, you would be well advised to get NOW, while you still can...

The first album and already a masterpiece, that's the way Jorge Ben is. Strongly recommended, full of world known songs loke Mas que nada and Chuva, his unique voice is one of Brazilian and world music most powerful manifest to beauty. After this more raw and simple, check out two more complex albums and for me their masterpieces - Tábua de Esmeralda and Africa Brasil (for those two, 6 stars :)))

"Mas, que nada", was the first song written by Ben. Can you believe? This album is a prelude of a brilliant career. The three first solo albums (Samba esquema novo, Sacundim Ben Samba and Ben é samba bom) ,the period 1969-1976 (8 albums: From Jorge Ben to Solta o Pavão), and the 1979-81 period (out of Polygram) marked the climax of the brazilian music.

Marvellous. A long overdue and reasonably priced reissue of Jorge Ben's dazzling debut album. This album helped revitalize Brazilian pop at a time when the bossa nova craze had largely played itself out... This record opens with his version of "Mas, Que Nada," the hit song that made Jorge Ben and internationally known songwriter. Here Ben works with several of the best samba-jazz and pop bandleaders of the bossa era, including Maestro Gaya, Meirelles, and Luiz Carlos Vinha... Combined with Ben's sleek vocals, each arranger spins magic. Some of the best songs on here, such as "Vem, Morena, Vem," have been neglected over the years, while others such as "Chove Chuva" are perennial favorites. Listening to the album in its entirety is highly recommended -- it not only captures a bright new voice coming through at a special moment in time, it also just sounds great as a cohesive piece of work. Highly recommended.

Before Jorge Ben became the Funkmeister of world music he was a traditional Sambalero. This early work ib very Bossa Nova, featuring a jazzy quintet, Ben's writing [after all he first became famous as a songwriter with hits like Mas Que Nada for Sergio Mendes], and a crooning pop music singing style. It was to be years before he started to make that tangy Brazilian stew so reminisent of a concert mix like Dr. John-Kool and the Gang and Talking Heads. This is more a historical document than it is a particularly Funky recording.
