With the seventh installment of Pavarotti & Friends: For Cambodia and Tibet, the beloved tenor assembles yet another all-star cast of musicians in hopes of helping the children of Cambodia and Tibet. The music of the pop stars--which ranges from the modern rock of the veteran Eurythmics to the dance-pop of Aqua--really steals the show here, with Pavarotti lending his impeccable vocal support. Tracy Chapman performs "Baby Can I Hold You" as a duet with Pavarotti, and Eurythmics team up with him on "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)." Of course, the tenor's fans will be begging to hear the opera great in his element, and it's no surprise that he shines on Bizet's "Agnus Dei," with international pop star Mónica Naranjo joining in; Eduardo Di Capua's "O Sole Mio," with Savage Garden; or even Luigi Denza's "Funiculi, Funicula," with Aqua and a children's chorus. As globetrotting benefit tributes go, this is a mixed bag, but there's probably something here for everyone. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
Excellent video...........2002-10-13
And the man who sang O SOLE MIO - Darren Hayes (formerly of Savage Garden)... has the most beautiful- angelic- sultry and great voices I have ever heard - and to do it in Neapoliaton Italian (dialect) and in my opinion the best duet of ALL of them featured!!!!!
Great songs sung by a diverse group of artists.......2002-02-07
All artists sang two songs during the concert (one on their own and another with Maestro Pavarotti), but unfortunately not all of the songs are featured on this video. Another shortcoming is that there are no interviews or any extra footage.
It is funny to hear Pavarotti sing a pop tune as it is equally funny to see a pop singer with virtually no voice doing "O Sole Mio", but if it is all in good spirit and for charity, then it is enjoyable.
If you are intersted in European music scene or simply love Pavarotti, this tape will be a great treat for you.
Pavarotti's Best War Child Concert.......2002-01-04
Like in the previous concerts, Pavarotti appears with international pop stars in the open-air piazza of his home town, Modena, Italy. (How do I get tickets for that?)
If you haven't heard any of these concerts, also available on CDs, you will be surprised how well Pavarotti's voice--a voice that makes the gods swoon--blends with the likes of Enrique Iglesias, George Michael, Tracy Chapman, and the Eurythmics. Previous concerts included B.B. King, Elton John, Ricky Martin, and Liza Minelli. Sometimes he sings along in English, sometimes in Italian counterpoint. The effect is stupdendous! These concerts display all the beauty of this great operatic voice while at the same time honoring the art of our greatest pop artists.
What makes this video the best is the children's chorus, the combined Ars Canto of Parmi, Italy, and the Children's Choir of Cambodia and Tibet. The video starts with this chorus joining Pavarotti and the totally sexy Enrique Iglesias in a rousing "Cielito Lindo."
Pavarotti really knows entertainment and in this one he pulls out all the stops! Best of all, part of the proceeds of this tape goes to benefit the children of Cambodia and Tibet. Pavarotti's efforts to help War Child have already built music centers for children in Kosovo, Liberia, and Guatemala. What great leadership!
He says on one of his jackets: "All too often, children are betrayed by the inhuman actions of adults, and become the innocent victims of war and cruelty. War Child is an energetic, and practical organization offering vital hope, working tirelessly for children to regain their rightful place in the world."
Very diverse! Loved it!.......2000-12-18

This is a compendium of pieces drawn from Andrew Manze's recordings past, present, and projected. It includes single movements, groups of movements, and complete works, some unaccompanied, some with one or two supporting instruments, some with the ensemble Romanesca, some with the Academy of Ancient Music, of which Manze is co-director and concertmaster. The selections range from intimate chamber music to brilliant bravura pieces and are well designed to whet the listener's appetite to hear the complete records. They also display Manze's versatility, virtuosity, improvisatory imagination, expressiveness, and communicative power, which have propelled him to the top rank of Baroque violinists. He succeeds in combining rigorous scholarship with adventurous spontaneity, passionate involvement and a sense of humor--all of which are also in evidence in his erudite but entertaining program notes.Naturally, the most substantial pieces on the program tend to be especially impressive. Vivaldi's Concerto "La tempesta di Mare" is truly tempestuous, with extraordinarily daring harmonies and modulations. Manze's transcription and performance of a famous Bach Toccata and Fugue for organ creates the amazing illusion of an original unaccompanied violin composition. And, taken from Manze's recording with the Academy of Ancient Music, "La Follia," one of 12 Corelli Sonatas orchestrated by Geminiani as Concerti Grossi, is enormously exciting. Also noteworthy are selections by Uccellini and Marini performed with Romanesca, some movements from Bach and Handel sonatas, and part of Tartini's "La Sonata del Diavolo", better known as the "Devil's Trill Sonata," played unaccompanied with diabolical freedom and virtuosity. --Edith Eisler

A rich introduction to a top Baroque specialist.......2005-11-15
This sampler CD is a nice compilation of Manze's music - from solo violin to full orchestral music - featuring works from more well-known composers (Telemann, Bach, Handel, Vivaldi) to the more obscure Italian violin virtuoso composers (Tartini, Uccellini, Pandolfi, Geminiani, Marini). The selections spotlight his highly rhythmic, academic-rich style and techniques which have won accolades from the international music press like Gramophone, Penguin Guide, ClassicsToday and BBC Music. Highlights are the concerti grossi from Geminiani, Vivaldi and Handel and the sonatas from Handel and Telemann. One truly delightful work is the Handel Violin Sonata in which Manze illicits a most bouyant, spontaneous manner that is most uplifting. Less inspiring to me were the Bach and Pandolfi sonatas as were the somewhat mundane liner notes written by Manze - although they are not without some fascinating tidbits. But so much more could have been said about Manze, his unique style and his career in the notes by a third party to give a more colorful "portrait" of this artist.
If you are new to Manze's music, this CD is a great place to start to explore his broad discography and his compelling style and will help you sort out which composers/recordings you will most gravitate towards - or equally important ... the ones you don't. While varied and compelling, this one CD is only a smittering of Manze's recordings - unfortunately absent are representation works of his powerful readings of the unusual, free-form and often-meditative sonatas of the German-Catholic composers, Biber and Schmelzer (some of Manze's best recordings in my opinion). ClassicsToday gave this CD a perfect 10/10 if that helpf make your decision easier (the sound quality is consistentyly very vivid too). Harmonia Mundi offers this sampler CD at a "teaser" price (about half price) as a way to introduce listeners to great artists - with the hope of course that you will buy a few of the CD's represented here (at full price) that most catch your interest. Either way it is a win for the classical listener exploring the less-familiar Baroque violin repertoire that Manze specializes in dusting off from the shelves and performing most strikingly.

Monteverdi's larger choral pieces are so masterly that they tend to overshadow his chamber-scale sacred music--the solo works in particular. Occasionally one or two of these exquisite motets will appear on a collection such as Paul McCreesh's Venetian Vespers, but rarely do they become the focus of an entire recording as they are here. The much-admired early-music diva Maria Cristina Kiehr has a slightly constricted quality to her voice that won't appeal to everyone, but her very narrow vibrato colors her sound without affecting her accuracy of pitch, spotless coloratura, or blend with period instruments (played beautifully here by Concerto Soave). Kiehr also uses her command of dynamics and phrasing with a subtlety that really puts the rhetoric of each piece across--check out her echo effects and crescendos in the motet "for solo voice in dialogue" Jubilet and the joyful Laudate Dominum. Her gentle manner works especially well with the title track: the Pianto della Madonna is Monteverdi's own reworking of his famous Lamento d'Arianna as a solo depicting the Virgin Mary's grief at the foot of the Cross. The slightly overwrought distress of the original Lamento could be inappropriate to such a sacred subject, but Kiehr's emotive yet dignified approach in the Pianto has a genuinely moving effect. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:
This is the real Monteverdi.......2001-04-12
Exquisite small-scale Monteverdi from an impressive soprano.......2000-04-13
Harmonia Mundi's CD 'Pianto della Madonna' includes ten well-chosen motets for solo voice from various published collections, among them two from the best known, the 'Selva Morale e Spirituale' of 1640, with a pretty little sonata by Marini and three short organ pieces by Antegnati, Marini and Merulo. With the exception of the unique 'Pianto della Madonna', based on the famous 'Lamento dell'Arianna' from the lost opera, these fascinating counter-Reformation motets display two styles, some following the spare, elegant style of Peri and others the more elaborate and colourful one of Caccini, in which Monteverdi's operatic connections are on display. Among them are some truly lovely pieces, including the etherial 'O quam pulchra es', from Ghirlanda Sacra of 1625, and 'Jubilet', an intriguing echo-like dialogue very reminescent of the 'Due Seraphim' from the 1610 Vespers.
The impressive Argentinian soprano Maria Cristina Keihr has a voice with an unusual and pleasing timbre, and which sounds well throughout her extensive range. She has almost no vibrato and an exceptionally clear and well-controlled delivery, even in Monteverdi's elaborate ornamentation, and is clearly completely at ease with the music of the period. The small band, 'Concerto Soave', of violin, viola da gamba, harpsichord, archlute, and harp, directed by harpsichordist and co-founder (with Keihr) Jean-Marc Aymes, is also first class, although in many of the motets its role is discreet and supportive. There are exceptions, motets where they play a more prominent part, and they simply sparkle in 'Confitebor', from 'Messa a quattro voce e Salmi' of 1650, the first of fourteen superb tracks in 61'28 of exquisite small-scale Monteverdi.

A variety chocolate box.......2007-06-21
My only complaint is a personal one, based on unpleasant religious associations connected to the sound of a solo organ (triggered by only two pieces in the collection). These are apparently shared by my wife, because during the toccata she shouted out from her office "I feel like I'm in church..!". That apart, it's great...

A Gem of a Baroque Album.......2003-03-06
Lovely music ruined by the sound of "old instruments".......2002-10-15
The fact is that since the invention of modern stringed instruments, not a single serious piece of music has been composed with the specification that it should be played with old instruments. The reason is easy to understand, once you have heard both the old and the modern instruments playing the same piece. The old instruments have a whining, thin, nasal, wiry sound that is decidedly unpleasant. It lacks the sweetness, depth, and sheen that we have become accustomed to in modern times. Thus, nobody ever writes pieces for those instruments any more.
The argument that there is something about music from the earlier era that lends itself more appropriately to the old instruments is nonsense. The fact is, that as soon as modern stringed instruments were developed, all composers and performers switched to those modern instruments as soon as they could afford to do so - regardless of their style. And I know of no historical evidence that any composers CHANGED their style to any noticeable degree so that their music was more conducive to the new instruments. They just used the new instruments because they were objectively better.
So this CD is recommended only for people who believe that music is a historical or archeological exercise (i.e., people who don't know what music is in the first place), or people who don't care or notice what kind of instruments are being played (i.e., people with tin ears).
