This immaculately conceived and packaged fundraiser for the AIDS awareness foundation is a sharp tribute to Brazilian pop. David Byrne, Milton Nascimento, PM Dawn, Stereolab, Gilberto Gil, and Crystal Waters (vamping through "The Boy from Ipanema") are among those weighing in with sophisticated tunes that will cross from cocktail hipsters to the leading edge of the mass audience. --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:

red hot and best!.......2007-05-14
the music, those great catchy samba and bossa nova tunes that became wildly popular during the 1960s, are suited to each of the artists making a guest appearance on the cd.
among the highlights are the trip-hop infused 'corcovado' by everything but the girl, the dance-club happy 'boy from ipanema' by crystal waters--which also contains one of her best vocal performances--, sting's loving, pensive 'how insensitive', maxwell's calming 'security' and caetano veloso's highly erotic 'e preciso perdoar'.
the collection, generally speaking, is a great party cd and each song is treated with a great deal of ingenuity and integrity.
New Takes on Brazilian Pop.......2005-06-30
Most of the songs contained herein were written way back in the day by Antonio Carlos Jobim and at least a few should be vaguely familiar: "The Girl From Ipanema", of course, but also "One Note Samba", "Waters Of March", and "Water To Drink". But these aren't the original versions--they're updates in a variety of styles. Some work pretty well, some will make you want to hurl (mainly Sting's take on "How Insensitive", which is droning and pointless).
Notable are: a punched-up synth-heavy "Ipanema" by one-hit-wonder Crystal Waters, jazz group Incognito on "Water To Drink", world-music-loving David Byrne and sultry Marisa Monte on "Waters Of March", the well-known Caetano Veloso and Ryuichi Sakamoto with the lesser-known Cesaria Evora on "E Preciso Perdoar", Stereolab's quirky and strange "One Note Samba", and Bebel Gilberto on "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo".
The Red Hot series, which started with the Cole Porter tribute "Red Hot + Blue", has always done excellent work and this compilation is no exception. If you'd like to sample Brazilian pop music of a certain era but you're terrified of breaking out your dad's dusty old Jobim LPs, this is a great way to see what's what.
Also the liner notes are extensive and informative, so you really get your money's worth. I'm still not clear on the divide between samba and bossa nova, but I reckon that's my fault.

Great for Jobim Fans.......2002-07-16
An excellent addition. I have most of the songs on the album on at least two other CDs, but the artists have played with the songs enough to complement the originals.

More than merely a variant on the traditional samba beat, the bossa nova has had a rich life since it emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s. It was introduced to American audiences by returning jazz musicians, including guitarist Charlie Byrd, who shared some its most famous tunes with saxophonist Stan Getz. Getz's sweet, breathy tenor saxophone was its ideal American voice, and the bossa nova quickly became a popular craze, spurred by Getz's recordings with the composers Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto (especially Getz/Gilberto). While the phenomenon would soon run its course, leaving a mass of forgettable recordings in its wake, it persisted as part of the rhythmic vocabulary of jazz and as a potent, transforming folk form in Brazil. This compilation includes the greatest hits of Getz's various collaborations, but it also presents a significant and varied sampling of bossa's Brazilian forms, including the politically charged tropicalismo movement founded by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:
Soundtrack of a Life.......2007-07-04
1959: Frankie Would Say, "IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR!".......2007-04-16
If you have read my review for the album Bossa Nova for Lovers then you know that I've only just recently discovered that I've been in love with Bossa Nova for pretty much my entire life without ever knowing it. (And if you haven't read that review, I'd like to know why not! I mean, if you're not hanging on my every word I'm just going to stop nailing them up there. ; )
I purchased two Bossa Nova collections as soon as I realized that "Bossa Nova" was the name of the musical genre that my heart has been carrying around for the past 43 years. (I do catch on, but slowly.) I acquired the aforementioned set because I'm a real "lover" -- yeah, bring it on ladies! (But I'm a "fighter", too, so watch yer step, dude!) And I simultaneously bought "NOVA BOSSA: RED HOT ON VERVE", and danged if I can tell ya which one I like best; they're both Boss! I might prefer this collection overall, only by the slimmest margin, but "For Lovers" includes Astrud Gilberto's "The Shadow Of Your Smile", and lacking that song, my smile would be turned upside down. : (
I found JOHN CARLIN's liner notes included with this compact disc to be very informative, so I'm copying them below:
"Brazilian music is American music. It comes from the same multicultural fusion that spawned blues, jazz, salsa, reggae and rock. In Brazil it is called samba. Samba fused three sounds that thrived in Rio de Janeiro at the end of the 19th century: West African polyrhythms, Portuguese melodies, and Native American chants. [*By chants were you aware that I'm part Mohawk Indian? I want 40 acres and a jackazz! Oh wait, I'M the jackazz.*] This potent combination was turned into a classic myth by the poet Vinicius de Moraes, whose play "Black Orpheus" brought Afrocentric Brazilian culture and samba to international attention. In the well-known film version, Orpheus dies for love, but his artistic spirit lives on in a young boy who picks up Orpheus' guitar and plays his song to make the sun rise. The beauty of the music makes the film's heavy-handed theme credible. Orpheus' song, "A Felicidade", composed by a young Antonio Carlos Jobim, comes out of samba culture while effortlessly introducing something new and even more beautiful to the world. That sound later became known as bossa nova, the new wave. It was created by Jobim and de Moraes along with the great singer/guitarist Joao Gilberto. Inspired by samba, along with the sophistication of Debussy and Cole Porter, Jobim began writing simple, beautiful songs that suggested, but were never burdened by their eccentric harmonies, asymmetrical structures and abstract thoughts.
"Within a few years, American jazz musicians like Herbie Mann, Charlie Byrd and Stan Getz began to sample these new exotic songs. By 1962, Jobim's "The Girl From Ipanema" performed by Getz with Joao Gilberto and his wife Astrud, on the Verve label, became the biggest hit in the U.S., the year before the Beatles arrived. [*According to my Billboard book, it was '64.*] The success of the song and the bossa beat created a pop formula capitalized upon by Astrud, Sergio Mendes, Walter Wanderley and others throughout the mid-Sixties. At the same time, Jobim and Gilberto - as well as musicians like the Tamba Trio, Edu Lobo, Baden Powell and Marcos Valle - continued to refine bossa and samba into one of the finest means of expression in the world of pop music.
"By the late `60s, a new generation of artists began to emerge in Brazil from the Afrocentric northeastern state of Bahia. Led by Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, they merged bossa with rock by adding more aggressive beats and avoiding romantic lyrics. This new movement, called tropicalismo, demonstrated the continued vitality of Brazilian music and that samba, like the blues, grew from the multicultural character of the Americas to become one of the great art forms of the 20th century."
~ John Carlin
I saw the movie "BLACK ORPHEUS" in the late `80s because I tremendously enjoyed Vince Guaraldi's song "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", which I knew had first appeared on his album titled, "Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus." I don't recall being much impressed with the movie back then, but seeing it a second time is suddenly a priority for me. ("NOVA BOSSA: RED HOT ON VERVE" begins with Jobim's "A Felicidade" taken directly from the 1959 "BLACK ORPHEUS" soundtrack. I feel it's spoiled a bit by the voices and various other audio portions of the film's soundtrack, but historically, it's still the perfect opening for a Bossa Nova set. And I can't tell you how cool I think it is that Bossa Nova was introduced to the world at large in the same year that I entered into it.)
The so-called "Interludes" on this set are merely 15-30 second snippets of drums, ocean and street sounds, etc. I'm not sure what their purpose is, and I could have done without them, thank you very much, but they don't diminish my listening pleasure because the tunes are simply Mmmm, Mmmm good! I swear, I love Bossa Nova. My only wish is that some of the tracks were extended: it seems that no sooner has a particular rhythm and melody enveloped me and begun carving grooves into my heart and soul than it comes to an end and we're off to the next delicious slice of Bossa Nova. Oh well, "Leave `em wanting more" is the old entertainment maxim.
I dig every song on "NOVA BOSSA: RED HOT ON VERVE", although Caetano Veloso's "Superbacana" is pretty goofy. Why do I see The Brady Bunch in my mind when that one plays? No, seriously, why? But this is a funky Fun Fiesta; less Saudade than the Bossa Nova for Lovers disc, which is perfectly fine with me because now I have a Bossa Nova concert for both moods. If you too have a heart for Bossa Nova, I can guarantee your satisfaction with this first-class set. And speaking of the heart, always remember what that great Brazilian pianist Yoey O'Dogherty once said to a group of budding Bossa Nova musicians in 1963: "Listen with your heart, speak with your fingers, and love with your-- Hey, who took my beer?"
Impressive survey of classical themes!.......2005-02-27
This is a very representative selection of the golden spirit of this sensual and contagious rhythm . from Luis Bonfa, a real authority in this subject to Caetano Veloso. Literally a human gallery will pass the threshold of the mere entertaining showing the most remarkable exponents of this original genre. You will listen to that guitar legend : Baden Powell; Stan Getz and his classical and unmistakeable tune sax ; Joao Gilberto and Sergio Mendes.
You will understand the real meaning of the famous Brazilian expression saudade when you listen this CD.
Highly gratifying.

Turbo-charged.......2004-07-31
When Monty is on his game (and how often isn't he?), there simply is no pianist who is more fun to catch live (and that includes Oscar). His playing is full of play, and he makes it everybody's game--a stunning use of variety and surprise in ways that keep his rhythm sections on time and his listeners dancing in their seats. Listen to his felicitous chatter on "Happy Talk." He alternates a Wynton Kelly swinging right hand with Shearingesque block chords, then moves to Oscar-like melodic power in the left hand. And he takes the melody into unexpected yet accessible places that even Ahmad Jamal might overlook. Most importantly, his rhythm section catches the scent and joins him in the chase--the mighty Ray Brown supplying the power and momentum of the primary journey while Frank Gant catches and highlights every one of the adventurer's delightfully Quixotic side-trips.
Of Monty's recordings in print, this studio album perhaps represents as well as any the explosiveness of his live performances, unless "Live at Montreux" is still available. Or if you can find it, no recording by any instrumentalist swings harder than Monty's early l970's LP "We've Only Just Begun," with its exhilarating marathon romp on "It Could Happen to You."

Onda Sonora, the 12th in the Red Hot Organization's series of AIDS-benefit compilations, effects a wildly successful marriage of current and traditional Portuguese and Brazilian styles performed by native stars and varied guests. Standouts include everything from a David Byrne-Caetano Veloso collaboration to the hip-hop-hard fusion of General D and Funk 'n Lata's "Sobi Esse Pano, Mano," from Brit-Brazilian trip-hoppers Smoke City's "O Cara Lindo (Mr. Gorgeous)" to a matchup of Nana Vasconcelos and Vinicius Cantuaria. A rhythmically insistent, soothing, and utterly entrancing set. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
Solid Mix of Portuguese Styles.......2004-05-15
The CD starts out with an interesting David Byrne/Caetano track, followed up with probably my favorite band, Smoke City. The version of O Cara Lindo is different than the one on their feature album too; I dig this one better. Also in here is a Tribalistas cut (Monte/Brown at least - Arnaldo appears later in this ablum) which I enjoyed. Lura had a slow and sensual cut, KD Lang had some Portuguese Fado and there were some other solid cuts here too. I think my favorite cut is Madredeus's "Os Dias Sao A Noite" remixed. This is vastly different than the original on "O Paraiso", but so haunting and beautiful is the arrangement. Theresa Salguiere's vocals are sweet as always. Another good cut to me was "Sem Voce". One of the things I enjoyed about this was looking at the artists - Moreno Veloso, DJ SPooky/Vinicius Cantuaria (what a guitarist he is!), Smoke City (Christian Franck - another great guitarist)and so on.
The downside? Some of the Africa cuts weren't up my alley. I know the history of Portuguese speaking African nations and Brasil and Portugal well, its in my heritage. But it just wasn't for me. Some of the other songs didn't grab me either and its hard to say that this will be as timeless a release to me as Red Hot & Rio. Finally do be warned that this is a rather DARK cd - given the cause of the Red Hot organization, it sort of fits. If you enjoyed this, certainly check out Red Hot and Rio, Brasil 2Mil and work by Tribalistas, Madredeus, Vinicius Cantuaria, Caetano Veloso and maybe Da Lata's album titled "Serious".

Charlie's Ultimate Tribute to Django.......2005-09-03
On this album, Charlie takes quite a contrapuntal approach to the arrangements; and they are all his arrangements (as well as quite a few compositions!). So, you know this is as good as it gets. A person at the height of his musical abilities, paying triubte to one of his, "guitar heros".
All members of the quintet do an absolutely marvelous job getting their ideas accross. My only complaint is that there was never a second (imagine a "live"?!) CD made by this incredible group.
