Pianist Keiko Matsui, a favorite among smooth jazz and crossover fans for her elegant melodic style, breaks new ground on several fronts with Moyo. Having split with her husband Kazu Matsui, who produced her previous albums, she produced it herself, for a new label (Shout Factory), and recorded much of it in South Africa (as well as Japan, New York, California, and Colorado). Moyo has a high special-guest quotient: trumpeter Hugh Masekela, saxophonists Paul Taylor and Gerald Albright, and singer-bassist Richard Bona are featured. But the clean and sometimes spare arrangements allow the personal nature of the writing to come through. When Matsui trusts in the forceful lyricism of her playing, as on the title track (Swahili for "Heart and Soul"), she makes the strongest impression. But even when she employs synthesizer and soprano sax sweetening, the songs maintain their honest expression. The rhythmic thrust of South African-derived songs such as "After the Rain" may well open her up to a new audience. --Lloyd Sachs

Album Description

Contemporary jazz icon Keiko Matsui's new album, (Swahili for "heart and soul"), recorded with local musicians in South Africa, Japan and the United States, introduces new sounds and rhythms to her elegant piano melodies and gentle jazz grooves. For this project, Keiko invited other artists into the creative process, including legendary trumpeter Hugh Masakela, sax player Gerald Albright, soprano sax player Paul Taylor, bassist/vocalist Richard Bona, drummer Akira Jimbo and vocalist Waldemar Bastos.

2 out of 5 stars Not Keiko Matsui-bland and piano in background.......2007-07-08

I have bought all of her prior albums, and many by her husband Kazu, and have usually been pleased with the distinctive variety of mix with piano and a variety of jazz or new age styles. But while this CD has a cut or two worth listening, most of this could be exchanged blindfolded with a large number of other boring lounge acts. Unfortunately, this album is like the many other "popular" jazz artists who tend to all sound alike, akin to the bland Americanized taste of a Mexican meal that is on the menu at almost every chain restaurant in the country. She used to be different, original and....I was listening to this for the first time in my office and someone came by and said "I thought you didn't like Kenny G." (I don't!) On many cuts, the main sound is sax, or some other not-her, so if you are looking for a variety of playing, like Wildflower to Dream Walk to others, it is not here.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Stuff.......2007-05-30

This is the first Moyo CD i've heard. It's very interesting, very good. Easy listening, and very smooth. I like the tempo's and the quality of the music.
I am definitely interested in listening to more.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful cd.......2007-05-27

Keiko Matsui is a awesome cd with wonderful arrangements & wonderful songs. She just keeps getting better on each new cd. Shes a awesome musician. I feel she as awesome as Jim Brickman, David Benoit & Bob James. Id say to go out to buy this new release of hers as quikly as you can & youll be glad you did. George

5 out of 5 stars Another Masterpiece.......2007-05-26

I got a sneak peak of Moyo when I went to Keiko Matsui's concert in March, have been looking forward to the CD since then. I am happy to play this loud again in my ears!

4 out of 5 stars Looking forward, looking back: a wonderful retrospective.......2007-05-24

Moyo is a wonderful album for those new to Keiko Matsui as it captures her musical development for the past two decades, from smooth jazz to new age, and the emergence of a new style incorporating a wider range of ethnic influences and a willingness to record in more spontaneous settings.

Following her divorce last year from her personal and professional partner of more than twenty years, Keiko Matsui began exploring new musical directions, a walk into the future punctuated with occasional glances into the past. The result is her first album of original work in two years, music that both looks back and looks ahead.

Her new direction finds Matsui borrowing from the African contemporary jazz scene, not only in compositions infused with African rhythms, but also in her choice of performing and recording mates, including the reigning grandfather of South African jazz, trumpeter Hugh Masekela, Angolan vocalist Waldemar Bastos, and Cameroonian bassist/singer Richard Bona. Matsui also seems to be trying to open up her performing by recording with live musicians in more spontaneous settings, rather than continuing to develop the carefully orchestrated synthesizer work for which she has long been known and at which she excels.

She hasn't abandoned that style altogether. You can find a couple of examples on Moyo, slower numbers based on piano and synthetic strings that will be pleasingly familiar to fans who have made her albums of the past seven to eight years commercial successes. Going back even further, Matsui calls on saxophonist Paul Taylor, a member of her touring and recording band in the mid-to late 90's, and Gerald Albright, who first recorded with Matsui in 1991, to help light up a few smooth jazz memories.

If you've never heard Matsui, Moyo would be a great place to start. If you've been a fan for years, you might find this album a marvelous retrospective.

Judging by the thick chugging that Deep Purple pull off as they enter "Highway Star" on this classic 1972 set, this band was of an era that appreciated size in sound. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar and Jon Lord's keyboards owned the evenings on the quintet's Japanese tour, giving the band a front-end density that kept drummer Ian Paice's snap heavy and loud. On tour in support of the album Machine Head, Deep Purple indulged in some great long-form jams, reaching into the 10-minute range for most of the main set and closing with the now-famed live read of "Space Truckin'." There's a reason this is regarded by many as one of hard rock's cornerstone live recordings. It's a boiler. This gold version of the title offers superior sound quality for a higher price than the standard-issue CD. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars MARK 2 LINE UP - MADE IN JAPAN.......2007-05-31

This is the famous line-up of Mark 2; Ian Gillan on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitars, Roger Glover on bass, Jon Lord on keyboards and Ian Paice on the drums.

This is absolutely one of the best recorded live albums for me. Recorded live in Japan in 1972! Just buy the album and listen! If you own it in vinyl (LP) like me, it's better that you own it also in the form of a CD coz it's expanded with extra tracks like Black Night, Speed King and Lucille. These songs didn't appear in the first release of the album and even in the first release of the CD.

This is my third copy of this album already. I've got my first copy in the mid 70s and again in the 80s. Actually in the Philippines it was released as Made in Japan Volume 1 and Volume 2 in separate album.

All songs in the LP Volume 1 and 2 are in one CD only in this edition and the other CD contains the extra tracks from the same Japanese tour in 1972.

5 out of 5 stars WOW - I forgot just how good it can get!.......2007-02-02

Perhaps I should thank those kids who stole all my CD's from my car. Cause now as I am replacing them, I'm also listening to some of the old classics. And Made in Japan is a classic!

Favorite song on the cd is Child In Time. But the entire CD is great!

If you like hard rock from the old days, this is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Driving a semi into space and never comin back!.......2006-12-19

This is fun and heavy music. Ian Gillian screams his head off, Ritchie Blackmore goes nuts with vibrato and tremolo on his Stratocaster, Jon Lord goes into intergalactic space and back with incredible Hammond electronic organ effects, and Roger Glover and Ian Paice somehow hold it all together in Japan. This is Deep Purple.

The music could easily fly over the edge with a lesser group, with such silly material as "Strange Kind of Woman" (a trite "girl I gotta have ya" rock song) or "The Mule" (with some totally bizarre lyrics flying into a drum solo), but Deep Purple somehow transform the fluff into amazing and deep music. I'd dare any other band out there to try this.

The high points are "Highway Star", which kicks things off with a bang, and "Lazy" and "Space Truckin'", which feature Jon Lord's bizarre virtuosity and cutting-edge analog modulation of the classic Hammond organ. The sound, although strange and definitely "70's", somehow holds up remarkably well 35 years later.

Everyone is in excellent form on the album. They hold their own and play well together.

Very good liner notes provide a glimpse into the concert, the band, and even how this was marketed at the time as the greatest concert ever recorded. That bold claim is not too far from the truth, even today. Speaking of recording, the sound is excellent, as it always has been, with excellent balance and clarity.

The three encores are an interesting, but not essential, addition. They're enjoyable, but unfortunately, they turn what could have been 1 CD into 2 CDs, making this more a little more expensive.

Overall, this is music that goes way over the top and rarely seems to come back, and it might not be for everyone. But if you enjoy hard rock and virtuosity, this is an essential purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The promise of 70's hard rock is delivered.......2006-11-09

This could be one of the only hard rock cd's you ever need.

Fantastic from start to finish, this set shows everything that was right (and excessive) with the music scene in the early 70's.

Beyond any rating system

5 out of 5 stars The best live album ever.......2006-10-16

This album alone, should put Deep Purple in the rock and roll hall of fame.

Made In Japan puts most live albums to shame, even the really good one's! A legendary band at their peak captured on tape forever. There is a god! This Remastered Edition is only better in that it has the great encore Black Night included on a three songs bonus disc.

Get it, turn it up and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Musical References Here, Still Great JF!.......2007-07-06

I love the title. For those who don't know, I'm OK You're OK was one of the first bestsellers in Pop psychology. So, what does the title of a book have to do with the music on this disc?

Who knows. Maybe Jason finished the album, then stepped back and saw that the songs are a union of pop music and lyrics that delve into people's minds and motives. Okay, maybe I'm getting too deep about this. One thing is certain: there's way more than sugar pop here. Jason's musical references are many, indicative of knowledge of where pop has been for the last 30 years.

The opening track (This Time) is glorious; you want to open the windows and let summer in, take a ride a convertible with the top down, or step out at night and just have a great time. It's funny, too, that "steppin' out" should come to mind. Think of Joe Jackson's brighter, poppier songs married to the production sheen of XTC. (9/10)

"NYC" sounds like a television theme song for a new network sitcom. (9/10)

"Stephanie Tells Me" reminds me of "The Plan" from 1999's Can You Still Feel album. (9/10)

"The Knew" sounds like a long-lost ELO track, while "Hurricane" reminds me of songs Beck has been writing lately. (7/10)

"Runaway"...now here's a real sleeper track; what a concoction this one is: it begins with a haunting synth line reminiscent of early Gary Numan and some jangly, Pink Floyd-style guitar work. Overall, it reminds me of Alan Parsons Project, but in a good way. (10/10)

"Komplicated Man" and "Contact" sound as if they were recorded as bonus tracks for Jason Falkner Fan Club members. I still really like them, though! If anyone's familiar with The Futureheads' new disc, News & Tributes, check out the chorus and "oh-oh's" on "Contact." I'm betting if you like News & Tributes, you'll like this song too. (8/10)

3 out of 5 stars Not quite as Okay as i'd hoped for..........2007-06-03

It's been a long wait for the new Jason Falkner album, almost nine years since the wonderful "Can you still feel" album.
Unfortunately I think Falkner has had too long to stew over these songs & as a result there is not much freshness to them.
This combined with the fact that he produced the record himself in between many other projects, (Beck, Air, Magnet, Paul McCartney to name a few.) has resulted in a very flat sounding record.
There are a few nice tunes that jump out and provide the type of glorious hooks that we are used to with Falkner. Sadly these are few & far between as the record treads much safer territory than his previous efforts.
Having said that, it's still a great record in comparison to what a lot of his contemporaries are currently producing.
If JF can churn out his next record within eighteen months I expect stellar results!

4 out of 5 stars Another Winner for Jason!.......2007-05-22

Jason Falkner delivers another winner with I'M OK YOU'RE OK. It's been a long wait since his last solo album, but certainly worth the wait. This album is way more than 'OK.' Probably the most prolific of the ex-Jellyfish-ers. Pure pop the way it's meant to be played. You won't be disappointed by this. Hopefully it will get an American release soon. The Japanese release has a nice bonus track. Way to go, Jason. Also check out TV EYES, the New Wave influenced project he did with Jellyfish founding member, Roger Joseph Manning Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning album..........2007-05-11

If you love Jason, you have to get this. It just might be his best album yet. It's worth ordering the Japanese version because there's no telling when the US version will come out, and the bonus track is great. How can one man be such a rock God???!!!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Beauty.......2007-05-06

So very worth the wait, nothing to be disappointed in or let down by. Another piece of hooky power pop perfection......

This is one of my favorite Japanese albums. If you're into traditional Japanese music this is a CD that you should have. I lost the one that I originally had and I finally bought another one. I couldn't beat the price and I think that this album is great. This is a must have CD if you're into this kind of music or just enjoy a broad spectrum of music.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect background.......2007-04-02

Not only does the music appeal to dinner, but just sitting and reading or doing a crossword puzzle it allows your mind to relax, just enjoy! All the tracks are pleasant.

4 out of 5 stars Super-relaxing.......2007-03-05

A very good introduction to koto music and a lot less cheesy than the concept would suggest. The first track is by far the best.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Japanese Music Album's I've found.......2006-11-04

Beautiful selection of Japanese music. Very calming and soothing music. Mainly slow, but does include some quicker pieces of music. Great variety of instruments used such as flute, violin and harpsichord. CD also includes recipe for a Japanese dinner. Great background music for a dinner party. If you like the Soundtrack to Memoirs of a Geisha, you'll enjoy this.

2 out of 5 stars Softener for the ears..........2006-08-26

I am not satisfied with this version of traditional Japanese music at all. In my opinion traditional Japanese music is much more impressive and intense when played on original Japanese instruments. The best example is "Sakura, sakura", one of the most famous Japanese songs. When it is played on Koto and Shakuhachi (Japanese flute) instead of transverse flute it has a different feel and much better quality of expression.

The whole CD is like a softener for an audience which might not be used to a non western sound. At the same time it will get a wrong idea about what Japanese music is and will miss its real quality.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Shakuhachi.......2007-05-17

I bought this CD to get a basic idea of the some of the classic sounds of Shakuhachi. I am a beginning player so this was essential to hearing a particular style and capabilities of a master artist.

I'd recommend this to anyone interested in Shakuhachi or if you just want some meditational style music.

5 out of 5 stars As it says on the package.......2007-04-07

For anyone curious about Shakuhachi music, this is a great place to start. Traditionally this is a contemplative music, played alone or with a very small audience, hence it is devoid of crowd pleasing flourishes, allowing the listener to focus in on tiny subtleties. The first couple of tracks feature a longer and deeper sounding shakuhachi, rarely heard but possibly even more hauntingly beautiful than the standard sized instrument.
This was originally released on vinyl from a 1976 recording, so at 34 minutes it's rather a short CD, the recording is excellent, capturing every nuance.

5 out of 5 stars music for meditation, comtemplation and regeneration.......2007-01-17

I first became interested in Japanese music through watching the films of Akira Kurosawa. His movies are as much an auditory as visual experience. He incorporates music from the traditional Japanese Noh theatre into his 'jidaigeki' (period drama) films. It is this music, perhaps more then the scenery which transports you to a different time and age. Noh music is very simple combing flutes and drums. Noh is a very minimalist form of theatre. only a bare minimum for the aesthetic stage and music allows the viewer to focus in on the performer and the drama upon them. By minimizing the art you see more. Shakuhachi takes this minimizing effect further by only presenting flute music and the outcome is inspirational. This music defies explanation, it is very simple yet concurrently extraordinarily complex for it can combine emotion of solitude and contemplation with joy and compassion. I cannot currently recommend any other music which allows one to look deep into oneself and at the same time feel joined with the greater world. Highly recommended for anyone looking for music to relax, meditate, think, and understand the larger world around them.

4 out of 5 stars Shakuhachi - The Japanese Flute.......2007-01-12

This was one of the first Japanese traditional music cds I wanted. If you watch a lot of kung foo movies, you will recognize this sound as it is usually played during a meditation or at the beginning of a fight scene.

This is a great cd if you wanting to relax or it would be great to play during dinner as a subtle background music.

If you are wanting something more upbeat, I highly suggest the "Japanese Taiko" with Joji Hirota.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful--peaceful.......2006-11-10

I'm no expert on the Japanese flute, but I do know that this is a wonderful CD.

The new release by keyboardist Hiromi Uehara and her trio doesn't fit easily into jazz categories. Electric and high-propulsion at times, it aligns with aspects of fusion, but shouldn't be limited by what that term has been burdened with over the years. Hiromi's Sonicbloom is international in its membership, with a Japanese leader, a Slovakian drummer (Martin Valihora), and a British bassist (Tony Grey). They're joined by guest guitarist Dave "Fuze" Fiuczynski (from Screaming Headless Torsos, Lunar Crash, and other outfits), and they recorded in--gasp--Nashville! Time is the thread that runs through many of the compositions, and they successfully bend its perception. From the multi-part "Time Out," which finds one part bursting out of another like nesting dolls, to the expansive tapestry of "Deep into the Night," which feels like a part of the continuity that is always blanketing half the earth, Hiromi and her compatriots go from being as precise as a clock to as haunting as a memory to as playful as a kitten (the wonderful "Time Flies" feels like it was composed in honor of a cat's darting attentions). --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars ROCKIN' JAZZ.......2007-04-27

I just got this disc today and I love it. I recently caught Hiromi and the band at the Blue Note in New York and they played selections from this disc and it worked live as well. I wish I had gotten the CD before I saw them but it really doesn't matter. The addition of guitarist Dave ' Fuze' Fiuczynski was a great move by Hiromi. He brings another dimension to the band and his playing is tasteful throughout. He and Hiromi nail it down. Bassist Tony Grey and drummer Martin Valihora are superb. I am especially impressed with Martin. He is fairly new to me but his playing is very impressive.

If you're looking for a traditional jazz CD, this isn't it. Hiromi continues to mix in electronic keys and does so very nicely. The fusion element is present throughout and since I'm a fusion head, it works for me. All in all a very well put together disc. I know Hiromi has been getting quite a bit of hype lately and that may turn some people off and they may not see what all the fuss is about. I could care less as I don't pay much attention to that stuff. I have always let my ears be the judge and that's worked pretty good for me thru the years. Hype or no hype, I like what Hiromi is doing, period!

Is there any limit to this girl's talent? Hiromi is absolutely amazing!! Her writing and creativity as well as her incredible playing are so unique and special. Hiromi is really on the path to laying new foundations for jazz piano, and piano trio...Check out Brain and Spiral, unbelievable!

5 out of 5 stars Best jazz in years.......2007-03-28

Hiromi has done it again. Big time. Hiromi is the best thing to happen to jazz since "Heavy Weather" came out 30 years ago. Inventive. Creative. And every player is at the top of their game. The addition of a guitarist added a new energy to Hiromi's music, as if she needed any more energy. "Fuze" often plays a fretless guitar, which is very different, and fits perfectly. If we could give six stars for "over the top good," this one would get it! Every single song is great.

5 out of 5 stars A Nice Introduction.......2006-03-23

I purchased this CD in order to find music for a play production set in Japan, and this turned out to be a major source for us. Very pretty and, for a listener unused to Japanese music, perhaps a good entry level disc to purchase as an introduction.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS "NEO-TRADITIONAL" JAPANESE AT ITS BEST.......2004-04-12

___________________________________________________________________________________________

These songs are "neo-traditional" in that they make use of traditional Japanese instruments along with some that are modern. Occasional electronic sound effects and ones recorded from nature are also used. As has been mentioned in other reviews here, this CD is lacking in true Japanese "traditional" songs. But, there is nothing wrong with that. I don't see the reason for the confusion as nowhere does the album claim to be traditional Japanese. Many of the songs are recent compositions or, as in the case of the beautiful rendition of "Sakura: Cherry Blossoms (Trio on a theme by Sajura)," are modern variations on traditional Japanese themes.

I love traditional Japanese music and have been a listener for quite some time, but many people new to this music may initially like the neo-traditional better because it contains more western structure and complexity and therefore won't provide as stark a contrast to what they've been accustomed to hearing as with true traditional Japanese pieces. If you are looking for Japanese traditional "only" make sure you do some research into the album first. You're always welcome to visit my page by clicking the link on my name above - there you'll find several of my own recommendations for good "traditional only" and/or "neo-traditional" Japanese albums.

These points aside, I think this album is gorgeous. The artists perform spendidly and the music is beautifully meditative. I think the pieces carry on the tradition of the koto and shakuhachi in a noble, though modern, way.

3 out of 5 stars Lullaby Review.......2003-07-13

I bought this CD. I was looking for the CD with Haru No Umi by Michio Miyagi, but this was all I found and picked it.
Frankly, I'm dissapointed at the lack of traditional japanese songs, such as 'Aka Tonbo' or the much beloved 'Haru No Umi', and even 'Kimigayo' and 'Kazoueta'.
I loved the way they did 'Kojou no Tsuki', it sounds haunting as it is supposed to be. I disliked how 'Sakura' was done, as we have sung a better version in my chorus class ;)
However, I thorougly enjoy 'Umi: Sea Fantasy'. It sounds like something that'd be played at a festival. ..and I love the spooky yet sereneness of the shakuhachi in this piece. Overall, the CD is okay, and if you are looking for calm and serene japanese music to listen to or help you fall asleep (i listened to it last night to help me fall asleep), I'd recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great for relaxation and meditation.......2003-04-22

We play this CD in our spa. Its great for relaxation, but not rythmic enough for massage. It's great if you like the music in Japanese Restaurants. I personally think its boring, but serves the purpose of relaxation.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2003-03-25

This music truly grows on you-the shakuhachi flute used on these recordings are beautiful- and the koto is pretty good as well. This music is very simple, but very soothing as another viewer put it. It is indeed very good meditation music-or just for listening to while cruising the web-whatever. I myself listen to it some days on my car rides to and from work-helps me unwind a bit if the day was particularly stressful! So if you are a fan of Japanese music-this CD is for you! If you are a fan of Brittany Spears-then this CD is REALLY for you-it will be good therapy. Just an attempt at a joke. Take care my friends

Great cd! It is so relaxing to listen to.

2 out of 5 stars Very good sometimes, too electronic at others........2005-10-01

I was, overall, disappointed by this CD. There are many good reviews here, but they generally overpraise. Tracks 4 through 8 have too much synthesizer for my ears. A major highlight is track 9, The Crab and the Egret, but interestingly, the flute is accompaniment to the wondrous Chinese percussion. Disappointingly, the CD is only 40 minutes long and left me wanting more tunes without synthesizer accompaniment.

5 out of 5 stars Good choice of traditional music........2005-09-13

Interesting combination of musical selection with excellant high orchestral standards. The differing flute melodies seemed well integrated in each selection. I thoroughly enjoy listening to the CD again and again; repetition isn't a problem.

3 out of 5 stars You have to LIKE Chinese flute music..........2005-07-09

You get Chinese flute music. I am fond very of some of the more (Westernized? New-agey?) Chinese offerings but this just did not turn out to be what I expected. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and assume it is just a bit 'authentic' for my taste.
