Pianist Keiko Matsui, a favorite among smooth jazz and crossover fans for her elegant melodic style, breaks new ground on several fronts with Moyo. Having split with her husband Kazu Matsui, who produced her previous albums, she produced it herself, for a new label (Shout Factory), and recorded much of it in South Africa (as well as Japan, New York, California, and Colorado). Moyo has a high special-guest quotient: trumpeter Hugh Masekela, saxophonists Paul Taylor and Gerald Albright, and singer-bassist Richard Bona are featured. But the clean and sometimes spare arrangements allow the personal nature of the writing to come through. When Matsui trusts in the forceful lyricism of her playing, as on the title track (Swahili for "Heart and Soul"), she makes the strongest impression. But even when she employs synthesizer and soprano sax sweetening, the songs maintain their honest expression. The rhythmic thrust of South African-derived songs such as "After the Rain" may well open her up to a new audience. --Lloyd SachsAlbum Description
Contemporary jazz icon Keiko Matsui's new album, (Swahili for "heart and soul"), recorded with local musicians in South Africa, Japan and the United States, introduces new sounds and rhythms to her elegant piano melodies and gentle jazz grooves. For this project, Keiko invited other artists into the creative process, including legendary trumpeter Hugh Masakela, sax player Gerald Albright, soprano sax player Paul Taylor, bassist/vocalist Richard Bona, drummer Akira Jimbo and vocalist Waldemar Bastos.Customer Reviews:

Looking forward, looking back: a wonderful retrospective.......2007-05-24
Following her divorce last year from her personal and professional partner of more than twenty years, Keiko Matsui began exploring new musical directions, a walk into the future punctuated with occasional glances into the past. The result is her first album of original work in two years, music that both looks back and looks ahead.
Her new direction finds Matsui borrowing from the African contemporary jazz scene, not only in compositions infused with African rhythms, but also in her choice of performing and recording mates, including the reigning grandfather of South African jazz, trumpeter Hugh Masekela, Angolan vocalist Waldemar Bastos, and Cameroonian bassist/singer Richard Bona. Matsui also seems to be trying to open up her performing by recording with live musicians in more spontaneous settings, rather than continuing to develop the carefully orchestrated synthesizer work for which she has long been known and at which she excels.
She hasn't abandoned that style altogether. You can find a couple of examples on Moyo, slower numbers based on piano and synthetic strings that will be pleasingly familiar to fans who have made her albums of the past seven to eight years commercial successes. Going back even further, Matsui calls on saxophonist Paul Taylor, a member of her touring and recording band in the mid-to late 90's, and Gerald Albright, who first recorded with Matsui in 1991, to help light up a few smooth jazz memories.
If you've never heard Matsui, Moyo would be a great place to start. If you've been a fan for years, you might find this album a marvelous retrospective.

Judging by the thick chugging that Deep Purple pull off as they enter "Highway Star" on this classic 1972 set, this band was of an era that appreciated size in sound. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar and Jon Lord's keyboards owned the evenings on the quintet's Japanese tour, giving the band a front-end density that kept drummer Ian Paice's snap heavy and loud. On tour in support of the album Machine Head, Deep Purple indulged in some great long-form jams, reaching into the 10-minute range for most of the main set and closing with the now-famed live read of "Space Truckin'." There's a reason this is regarded by many as one of hard rock's cornerstone live recordings. It's a boiler. This gold version of the title offers superior sound quality for a higher price than the standard-issue CD. --Andrew BartlettAlbum Details

MARK 2 LINE UP - MADE IN JAPAN.......2007-05-31
This is absolutely one of the best recorded live albums for me. Recorded live in Japan in 1972! Just buy the album and listen! If you own it in vinyl (LP) like me, it's better that you own it also in the form of a CD coz it's expanded with extra tracks like Black Night, Speed King and Lucille. These songs didn't appear in the first release of the album and even in the first release of the CD.
This is my third copy of this album already. I've got my first copy in the mid 70s and again in the 80s. Actually in the Philippines it was released as Made in Japan Volume 1 and Volume 2 in separate album.
All songs in the LP Volume 1 and 2 are in one CD only in this edition and the other CD contains the extra tracks from the same Japanese tour in 1972.
WOW - I forgot just how good it can get!.......2007-02-02
Favorite song on the cd is Child In Time. But the entire CD is great!
If you like hard rock from the old days, this is a must have!
Driving a semi into space and never comin back!.......2006-12-19
The music could easily fly over the edge with a lesser group, with such silly material as "Strange Kind of Woman" (a trite "girl I gotta have ya" rock song) or "The Mule" (with some totally bizarre lyrics flying into a drum solo), but Deep Purple somehow transform the fluff into amazing and deep music. I'd dare any other band out there to try this.
The high points are "Highway Star", which kicks things off with a bang, and "Lazy" and "Space Truckin'", which feature Jon Lord's bizarre virtuosity and cutting-edge analog modulation of the classic Hammond organ. The sound, although strange and definitely "70's", somehow holds up remarkably well 35 years later.
Everyone is in excellent form on the album. They hold their own and play well together.
Very good liner notes provide a glimpse into the concert, the band, and even how this was marketed at the time as the greatest concert ever recorded. That bold claim is not too far from the truth, even today. Speaking of recording, the sound is excellent, as it always has been, with excellent balance and clarity.
The three encores are an interesting, but not essential, addition. They're enjoyable, but unfortunately, they turn what could have been 1 CD into 2 CDs, making this more a little more expensive.
Overall, this is music that goes way over the top and rarely seems to come back, and it might not be for everyone. But if you enjoy hard rock and virtuosity, this is an essential purchase.
The promise of 70's hard rock is delivered.......2006-11-09
Fantastic from start to finish, this set shows everything that was right (and excessive) with the music scene in the early 70's.
Beyond any rating system
The best live album ever.......2006-10-16
Made In Japan puts most live albums to shame, even the really good one's! A legendary band at their peak captured on tape forever. There is a god! This Remastered Edition is only better in that it has the great encore Black Night included on a three songs bonus disc.
Get it, turn it up and enjoy!

Lots of Musical References Here, Still Great JF!.......2007-07-06
Who knows. Maybe Jason finished the album, then stepped back and saw that the songs are a union of pop music and lyrics that delve into people's minds and motives. Okay, maybe I'm getting too deep about this. One thing is certain: there's way more than sugar pop here. Jason's musical references are many, indicative of knowledge of where pop has been for the last 30 years.
The opening track (This Time) is glorious; you want to open the windows and let summer in, take a ride a convertible with the top down, or step out at night and just have a great time. It's funny, too, that "steppin' out" should come to mind. Think of Joe Jackson's brighter, poppier songs married to the production sheen of XTC. (9/10)
"NYC" sounds like a television theme song for a new network sitcom. (9/10)
"Stephanie Tells Me" reminds me of "The Plan" from 1999's Can You Still Feel album. (9/10)
"The Knew" sounds like a long-lost ELO track, while "Hurricane" reminds me of songs Beck has been writing lately. (7/10)
"Runaway"...now here's a real sleeper track; what a concoction this one is: it begins with a haunting synth line reminiscent of early Gary Numan and some jangly, Pink Floyd-style guitar work. Overall, it reminds me of Alan Parsons Project, but in a good way. (10/10)
"Komplicated Man" and "Contact" sound as if they were recorded as bonus tracks for Jason Falkner Fan Club members. I still really like them, though! If anyone's familiar with The Futureheads' new disc, News & Tributes, check out the chorus and "oh-oh's" on "Contact." I'm betting if you like News & Tributes, you'll like this song too. (8/10)
Not quite as Okay as i'd hoped for..........2007-06-03
Unfortunately I think Falkner has had too long to stew over these songs & as a result there is not much freshness to them.
This combined with the fact that he produced the record himself in between many other projects, (Beck, Air, Magnet, Paul McCartney to name a few.) has resulted in a very flat sounding record.
There are a few nice tunes that jump out and provide the type of glorious hooks that we are used to with Falkner. Sadly these are few & far between as the record treads much safer territory than his previous efforts.
Having said that, it's still a great record in comparison to what a lot of his contemporaries are currently producing.
If JF can churn out his next record within eighteen months I expect stellar results!
Another Winner for Jason!.......2007-05-22

The new release by keyboardist Hiromi Uehara and her trio doesn't fit easily into jazz categories. Electric and high-propulsion at times, it aligns with aspects of fusion, but shouldn't be limited by what that term has been burdened with over the years. Hiromi's Sonicbloom is international in its membership, with a Japanese leader, a Slovakian drummer (Martin Valihora), and a British bassist (Tony Grey). They're joined by guest guitarist Dave "Fuze" Fiuczynski (from Screaming Headless Torsos, Lunar Crash, and other outfits), and they recorded in--gasp--Nashville! Time is the thread that runs through many of the compositions, and they successfully bend its perception. From the multi-part "Time Out," which finds one part bursting out of another like nesting dolls, to the expansive tapestry of "Deep into the Night," which feels like a part of the continuity that is always blanketing half the earth, Hiromi and her compatriots go from being as precise as a clock to as haunting as a memory to as playful as a kitten (the wonderful "Time Flies" feels like it was composed in honor of a cat's darting attentions). --David GreenbergerCustomer Reviews:
ROCKIN' JAZZ.......2007-04-27
If you're looking for a traditional jazz CD, this isn't it. Hiromi continues to mix in electronic keys and does so very nicely. The fusion element is present throughout and since I'm a fusion head, it works for me. All in all a very well put together disc. I know Hiromi has been getting quite a bit of hype lately and that may turn some people off and they may not see what all the fuss is about. I could care less as I don't pay much attention to that stuff. I have always let my ears be the judge and that's worked pretty good for me thru the years. Hype or no hype, I like what Hiromi is doing, period!

A Nice Introduction.......2006-03-23
THIS IS "NEO-TRADITIONAL" JAPANESE AT ITS BEST.......2004-04-12
These songs are "neo-traditional" in that they make use of traditional Japanese instruments along with some that are modern. Occasional electronic sound effects and ones recorded from nature are also used. As has been mentioned in other reviews here, this CD is lacking in true Japanese "traditional" songs. But, there is nothing wrong with that. I don't see the reason for the confusion as nowhere does the album claim to be traditional Japanese. Many of the songs are recent compositions or, as in the case of the beautiful rendition of "Sakura: Cherry Blossoms (Trio on a theme by Sajura)," are modern variations on traditional Japanese themes.
I love traditional Japanese music and have been a listener for quite some time, but many people new to this music may initially like the neo-traditional better because it contains more western structure and complexity and therefore won't provide as stark a contrast to what they've been accustomed to hearing as with true traditional Japanese pieces. If you are looking for Japanese traditional "only" make sure you do some research into the album first. You're always welcome to visit my page by clicking the link on my name above - there you'll find several of my own recommendations for good "traditional only" and/or "neo-traditional" Japanese albums.
These points aside, I think this album is gorgeous. The artists perform spendidly and the music is beautifully meditative. I think the pieces carry on the tradition of the koto and shakuhachi in a noble, though modern, way.
Lullaby Review.......2003-07-13
Frankly, I'm dissapointed at the lack of traditional japanese songs, such as 'Aka Tonbo' or the much beloved 'Haru No Umi', and even 'Kimigayo' and 'Kazoueta'.
I loved the way they did 'Kojou no Tsuki', it sounds haunting as it is supposed to be. I disliked how 'Sakura' was done, as we have sung a better version in my chorus class ;)
However, I thorougly enjoy 'Umi: Sea Fantasy'. It sounds like something that'd be played at a festival. ..and I love the spooky yet sereneness of the shakuhachi in this piece. Overall, the CD is okay, and if you are looking for calm and serene japanese music to listen to or help you fall asleep (i listened to it last night to help me fall asleep), I'd recommend it.
Great for relaxation and meditation.......2003-04-22
