3 out of 5 stars New York Memories.......2007-05-19

I enjoy André Rieu DVD Concerts very much. His New York concert was good, but I found it a bit ironic. He said that he enjoyed palying American music and yet a large part of the Broadway music he played was composed by a British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. I was expecting to hear Irwin Berlin, Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, Copland, or even the Beach Boys. What happened? I miss the performances of Carmen Monarca and the other Sopranos. The The Harlem Gospel Choir was good, but seemed out of place with what André usually plays. I was hoping to hear a tribute to the heroes of 9/11, but did not. Basically in did not match up to his others such as Tuscany.

    5 out of 5 stars Love It!!.......2007-05-15

Wonderful CD. I love all Andre's music and think that he can play any style perfectly. The violin solos are magical, his soloists are at the top of their form and the orchestra is once again magnificent. It's a very varied CD which makes it easy to listen to it again and again. And I do!! Would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Andre's music or who just enjoys quality orchestral music in general.

    4 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu.......2007-03-16

I would have liked a little more Broadway in this CD, but it's wonderful to listen to and the Harlem Gospel Choir rocks me down the freeway on my way home from work.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Masterpiece! .......2004-12-28

Ah, the youth of today. Or shall we say of the 80's when Musical Youth first hit the scene. Five Jamaican born lads fresh from Birmingham, England released what would be known as their biggest hit with 'Pass the Dutchie' in early 1982. Highly regarded as one hit wonders, this disc proves doubters wrong. Musical Youth were talented musicians who never fully got the credit and recognition they so rightly deserved. Part of that was due to their record company, poor management and well, youth. This disc contains such uptempo hits such as 'Pass the Dutchie', 'Youth of Today' and 'Heartbreaker'. Also included is a duet with Donna Summer and a remix to 'Pass the Dutchie'. This is a must have for die hard fans and reggae fans worldwide.

5 out of 5 stars Still great music!.......2004-12-09

Yes, I'm still a fan of Musical Youth. People who own this album will agree that this music can only give you good times. It's cheerful and happy music by five boys who were very talented musicians. This album proves that their career was way too short. You will of course find the worldwide smash hit "Pass The Dutchie" on this cd, as well as a remix from 1994 that's completely overflowing. But you'll also find other great tracks like "The Youth Of Today", "16" and the duet with Donna Summer "Unconditional Love". If you like reggae and don't mind it a bit poppy, you'll definitely like this!

I bought this thinking it was the entire show. It's missing some of my favorite songs, such as "Rainbow Tour." Elaine Paige is great, but I don't care much for David Essex as Che.

4 out of 5 stars THE HIGHLIGHTS DISC OF THE ORIGINAL LONDON PRODUCTION.......2005-09-17

Over the years Andrew Lloyd Webber has made many musicals, some more successful and appealing to the public than the others. Most people will, however, agree that "Evita" remains one of his most satisfying works to this date. Numerous reasons confirm this statement. Just like in its predecessor "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita" is almost entirely sung-through; the lyrics are witty and appropriate; the subject matter is again a personality larger-than-life who rises from obscurity and dies at the peak of its fame, thus becoming a legend; the score is captivating and appealing to the listener, at home or in the theatre.

Following the suit of the Superstar, ALW and Tim Rice first published Evita as an album, which appeared in 1976. It was an instant success and soon afterwards the preparations began to put it on the stage. The veteran of the musical theatre direction, Hal Prince, accepted the offer to adapt the original album and Elaine Paige, then an unknown actress and musical theatre performer was cast in the role of Evita. The show premiered in London in 1978, winning acclaiming reviews and numerous awards. And yet, since the concept album was selling so well, the authors felt it unnecessary to release another full version of Evita, with the London cast. That is why we only have this highlights 53-minute recording of the original London production. The story of Evita is widely known, but for those who are new to this let's repeat the essentials: We follow the life story of Eva Duarte Peron, wife of post-World war two president of Argentina, Juan Peron. However, the musical is very loosely based on the actual life of the real Evita. The story follows Evita from the day of her death in July 1952, and then we have flashbacks until that moment, covering her coming to Buenos Aires, alleged love affairs, meeting Peron, being the first lady and dying of cancer at 33.

Being the first theatre version of the somewhat revised concept album material, this disc is not the best recording available. There are several drawbacks. First, it lacks a great part of the show, since all we have here are snippets, i.e., the main musical numbers, meaning it is a bit difficult to follow the story if you are a first-time listener, even though the booklet provides a basic story outline. One of the other obvious weaknesses is the minimalist orchestrations used on this recording. After the lush and epic sound of the concept album featuring the London philharmonics and a rock band, here we have the usual pit orchestra, consisting of only the basic instruments. Thus the beauty of the score remains somewhat lost and is only traceable in hints. The authors seem to be aware of it, since for the upcoming Broadway recording of the show, the orchestrations were improved and sounded clearer.

In addition, the cast performance here is also mixed. Although the role of Eva Peron raised Elaine Paige to stardom, I find her performance not the best, simply because her voice sounds too young. With time her vocal abilities matured, but here she just doesn't reach a much needed uncompromising determination of the character, the way Patti LuPone did on Broadway or Julie Covington on the original album. That is not to say that Elaine performance here is altogether bad, but it could have been much better. David Essex, on the other hand, is a very good Che. He has the strong vocal power Colm Wilkonson and Antonio Banderas both demonstrated in their interpretation, which leaves one wondering why was Mandy Patinkin cast in the role when the show was transferred to Broadway, since he had a very light and unpleasant voice. Joss Ackland, an esteemed British actor is a well chosen Peron, with a suitable dark note in his performance.

The CD comes with a couple of the production photos, but no lyrics are included.

For those of you who are getting acquainted with the story of Eva Peron for the first time I must point out: Bear in mind that this musical is only loosely based on the life of the real Evita. As much as Tim Rice's lyrics are craftily made, they lack a lot of historical accuracy. As a historian I became very interested in Eva Peron's life story so I did some research after seeing the movie. It turned out that the authors based their entire work on a single book called EVITA: THE WOMAN WITH A WHIP by Mary Main. It was based on rumors, lies and myths, written with the single purpose of slandering Eva Peron as much as possible. It contains no footnotes and no bibliography. The authors used it mainly because it was one of the few books available on the subject in the English language during the 70-is. So one should be very careful in making any conclusions based on the musical or the movie alone.

So this disk is more of a welcomed addition for the collectors of the Evita cast recordings, rather than a first-choice album for the new listeners. The latter should get one of the three available 2-CD albums: the 1976 concept recording with Julie Covington, the 1979 Broadway cast with the best Evita of them all, the Tony-winning Patti LuPone, or the very good 1996 movie soundtrack with Madonna in the lead. They all have the complete score and are much more satisfying than this highlights album.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Original Broadway Cast, but not bad.......2005-08-17

This soundtrack does not, in my opinion, rate as high as the Original Broadway Cast album with Mandy Patinkin and Patti Lupone, but it is not too bad. It is incomplete, which was a disappointment. Elaine Page doesn't hold a candle to Patti Lupone as Evita, and the Che leaves much to be desired. The highlight of this album is "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" which is simply superb. It was worth buying the cd just for that song. Some of the lyrics are different, which was interesting to hear, because they changed them around a bit when Evita was brought to the US. If you are an Evita lover I would suggest this album, but if you are just being introduced to Evita I would suggest going with the Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin cd.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading CD cover.......2005-05-07

I wanted the complete Evita soundtrack, and this rendition was terribly disappointing. The cd ends abruptly mid story. Voices are spectacular of course, but the cover suggests this is the original London peformance and a buyer, like me, expects the entire musical score. I wouldn't buy this again.

2 out of 5 stars MISSING SO MANY GOOD SONGS.......2004-07-11

THANK GOODNESS FOR THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF EVITA! THIS MUSCIAL IS VERY GOOD, YET IT HAS SOME WEAK SPOTS, BUT THAT DOSN'T MEAN LONDON SHOULD TAKE THEM OUT IN THE FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION OF EVITA. THERE ARE A LOT OF MISTAKES AND THINGS THEY SHOULD OF ADDED. HERE'S A LIST.

*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'RAINBOR TOUR' I LOVE THAT SONG
*BUENOS AIRES SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*A NEW ARGETINA SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'DICE ARE ROLLING" ANYTHING THAT HAS THE 'A NEW ARGETINA' MUSIC I JUST LOVE.
*THE COVER LOOKS TOO OLD. IF THEY WERE GONNA PUT IT ON A CD, THEY SHOULD OF MADE A NEW LOOK OR COVER.
*IT SHOULD OF HAD 23 SONGS INSTEAD OF 15

THERE ARE A LOT MORE REASONS WHY THIS CD WAS DREADFULL BUT I DON'T WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME. I SAY BUY THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST WITH THE EXELLENT PATTIE LuPONE. WHO CARES ABOUT THAT ESSEX GUY.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but voice still developing............2007-05-01

I purchased this CD because of Hayley's voice - it is so "pure," as others have stated, and rich. So my review of this CD is that you can tell her voice and command of her voice are still developing - it is not as rich as it is now. In addition, I feel she is just singing the songs and not really feeling the words within the songs like her other CDs along her live performance. The songs are wonderful but my recommendation is her later CDs. I also highly recommend her live performance on DVD, especially since there are songs that you can not hear any where else. I hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars A Breath Of Fresh Air.......2007-02-08

I have been a fan of Sarah Brightman and have many of her CD's and
Video tapes but Hayley Westenra is on a par with Sarah. I especially
enjoyed her on Celtic Women PBS special recently. This is my first
purchase but have 2 CD's on order and a DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Hayley Westenra CD by Hayley Westenra.......2007-01-12

Even though Hayley Westenra is only l8, I believe she is the best
female vocalist I have ever heard. Her voice is very clear and pure, and
she has perfect pitch. She is as fresh as the New Zealand landscape she
    comes from. Larry L. Lindsay

5 out of 5 stars In the beginning, there was Hayley..........2006-02-16

Following a limited edition CD that was only ever made for friends and family, this was Hayley's first commercially available recording, but even this was only ever released in New Zealand.

The recording sessions took place in 2001 when Hayley was still only 13 years old, yet her voice sounds so mature and rich and she displays such wonderful voice control. Overall, this recording allows the listener 47 minutes of absolute bliss.

    1. Walking In The Air (Words and music by Howard Blake)
This was once a hit for Aled Jones and remained popular for years. Now, with an intriguingly mystical introduction and a gently cascading theme between verses, Hayley's gorgeous voice always sounds strong and vibrant.

    2. Ave Maria (Bach)
With its omnipresent and highly recognisable tripping piano accompaniment, Hayley sings this beautifully. With perhaps a greater level of reverb than usual, it sounds as though she is singing in a huge cathedral.

    3. Memory (from 'Cats')
This begins with an arrangement for piano and vocal only, which enables the listener to concentrate fully on Hayley's wondrous voice. A full instrumental backing then becomes rich and powerful before gradually subsiding to allow Hayley's vocal part to once again transcend all expectations.

    4. All I Ask Of You (from 'Phantom of the Opera')
This is sung in duet with Shaun Dixon, a New Zealand tenor aged 23 (at the time of the recording). They alternate the lead and blend together perfectly when they sing together.

    5. Somewhere (from 'West Side Story')
Although 'Somewhere' might be a slightly uninspiring title, the opening line, 'There's A Place For Us', generates instant recognition. It is, however, a particularly memorable song from the pen of Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It never sounded more lovely than when Hayley sings it. Her voice is so perfect that you want every note to be held for half an hour or more to enable you to wallow in its beauty.

    6. The Mists Of Islay (Music by Wishart Campbell; Lyrics by Gavin Creed)
This sounds for all the world as though it is a traditional song but, in fact, it isn't. In places, the melody is reminiscent of 'The Skye Boat Song' and 'Scarborough Fair'. The island of Islay lies just below Jura off the west coast of Scotland - a place that evokes a feeling of peace and tranquility. So does the song and, particularly, Hayley's interpretation of it which is quite delightful.

    7. Ave Maria (Schubert)
This is enchanting and begins so peacefully it makes one want to drift off to sleep. It sounds a very ambitious work for someone so young to attempt but, Mr Schubert need have no fears. Hayley did not let him down!

    8. Bright Eyes (Words and music by Mike Batt)
Of course, we do not know how much time elapsed between the recording of the last track and this one or even that they were recorded in the same order as they appear on the end product but the change in style from classical to popular is magical and seamless, displaying Hayley's eclectic tastes and her great versatility.

This song, originally from the film 'Watership Down' was made popular by Art Garfunkel. It is so well known that any other version will inevitably be compared to it and familiarity usually tends to win. Not so here. Hayley's voice is utterly sensational. It was always a lovely song but, sung by Hayley, has become an eternal favourite. There is a delightful vocal fade-out at the end. Lesser singer's voices can sound frail when singing softly but Hayley's is still strong even as it fades gently away.

    9. Pie Jesu (from 'Requiem')
We return to the classical genre. At least it sounds as though we do, but this was written in 1985 by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Those piercing high notes send shivers down the spine. Hayley is surely capable of taking the lead in some future Lloyd Webber production. Are you reading this, Sir Andrew?!

    10. Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again (from 'Phantom of the Opera')
Hayley reaches the low notes in this song easily. What an incredible range she has. The instrumental break from violin, cello, piano and cymbals is haunting and delightful but, at the same time seems to demand the return of the vocal. It comes. The final note is so high, so pure, so perfect.

    11. I Dreamed A Dream (from 'Les Miserables')
A fabulous song which never sounded better than this. The central section contains some notes so low that I wouldn't have expected Hayley to reach them. But she does so easily and they sound so rich. The whole song is sung with such feeling and passion that I defy anyone to listen closely to Hayley's voice especially during the final few lines and not be deeply moved.

    12. Love Changes Everything (from 'Aspects of Love')
This is probably my favourite Andrew Lloyd Webber song anyway. It once occurred to me that it would be wonderful to hear Hayley sing it. I did not know then that she had recorded it. Here, sometimes singing two tracks in harmony with herself, it sounds quite magnificent. Two Hayleys - heavenly. And that top note at the end, perfectly held and controlled for seven seconds. Awesome.

    13. God Defend New Zealand (Music by John Joseph Woods; English lyrics by Thomas Bracken; Maori lyrics by Thomas Henry Smith)
This song and 'God Save The Queen' share equal status as the National Anthems of New Zealand but, in the absence of the Queen or a member of the Royal Family, only 'God Defend New Zealand' is used. The words were written in the 1870s and set to music a few years later when a competition was held for that purpose with a prize of ten guineas!

The first verse is arranged simply for vocal with piano accompaniment. The second verse is for vocal and acoustic guitar. Throughout these two verses Hayley's voice sounds quite majestic. Finally comes a synthesiser sounding for all the world like the majesty of a cathedral organ above which her voice sounds triumphant. Throughout, it is a joy to hear.

    14. Amazing Grace (Traditional)
Unlike the rest of the album, this song was recorded during a live performance in Hamilton, New Zealand in February 2001. We hear the announcement, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, Hayley Westenra'. The welcoming applause dies away as Hayley begins to sing the ever popular 'Amazing Grace'. It features the pipes and drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. The arrangement would sound magnificent as an instrumental but is enhanced by a 13-year-old Hayley whose voice sounds mature beyond her years. Such feeling. Such control. Such emotion. Utterly perfect. As we hear in the closing announcement, it was "absolutely fantastic. Thank you very much, Hayley.'"And so say all of us.

Hayley, if anyone told you at the time that your CD was a success, you tell them they were wrong. It was absolutely magnificent.

    Album Description

LTM is proud to announce a new CD in our series by visionary French composer Erik Satie (1866-1925), following the success of previous releases Vexations and Cocteau, Satie and Les Six, and presenting selected Satie recordings with explicit links to the unconventional, the mystic and the avant-garde. Musique de la Rose Croix is a double disc set (94 minutes) of solo piano music comprising Satie's enigmatic Rosicrucian pieces (1891-1894) together with an instrumental version of the ballet score Uspud (1892) and the meditative works collected as the Pages Mystiques (1893). 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Latin Decadence: Music For An Occult Church.......2007-07-11

The obscure "Uspud" and this recording's versions of "Les fils des etoiles" are worth it alone. "Les fils..." is read true to the slow and subtle Satie fashion, unlike most other recordings where it's just trotted out full-throttle. The addition of a 20 minute "Vexations" is also wonderful and is handled perfectly subtle as well. The "Harmonies" are pleasant little brief phrases lasting no more than 30 to 60 seconds. "Musique de la Rose-Croix" and "Pages Mystiques" are a bit heavy-handed on this disc; I'd look for Satie: The Early Piano Works to get an accurate rendition of these pieces. This is a great package overall. LTM is doing a great job of releasing Satie's work in compilations of thematic context.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Not great.......2007-03-29

I can't give it less than 3 stars because I love the musical. However, this recording is less than spectacular. It sounds like it was recorded by some guy in the audience with a mono tape recorder. I was disappointed in the leads, also. They're trying to hard to sound like rock stars, which makes them sound rather cheesy. There are good moments, but if you're new to "Chess," go with the original concept album. You can't beat Elaine Paige and Murray Head.

5 out of 5 stars Mate in Sweden!.......2007-02-07

Cold War Chess Championships came and went with the demise of the Soviet Union, as did the staging of Chess The Musical. This is to be regretted since musically and lyrically it is by far the best work from Abba duo Andersson and Ulvaeus, aided amply by Tim Rice. Oddly relatively unknown in Scandinavian, this concert performance, now well over ten years old, helped bridge the gap. It also managed to bring to the attention of producers that concert productions of this piece are perhaps the best way of bringing Chess to life in the post Cold War climate of the twenty-first century, and in particular relegating the old East West rivalry to the wings while focusing on the relationships-especially that of Florence and the Russian. Indeed they get all the best songs with the climatic finale You and I (reprise) making the hairs stand on the back of ones neck. The performance throughout are accomplished and enthusiastic, and the live performance and crowd responses add to the drama unfolding 'on stage'. One can only hope that Chess will remain in the consciousness of audiences and actors, producers and directors, as this CD is a perfect advertisement for a night of Chess at the theatre or concert hall

3 out of 5 stars Not that good.......2006-04-05

Contains the extra songs not found in the "studio release" (with Ms. Paige etc.). However, the quality is poor and even the artists are no match to the ones in the studio recording. However, a must for Chess-aficionados.

4 out of 5 stars An ok album........2003-07-02

I now own all the five major (legal) recordings of Chess; Original Concept, Broadway Cast, In Concert, "Danish" Complete Cast and Swedish cast.

All of these have their strenght and weaknesses, but as for completeness, one have to go for the Swedish or Danish recordings. As it is, I dislike the Swedish one, and the Danish is hard to get. That makes this Concert Recording the most complete of the remaining Chesses, but not necessarily the best sung.

I would not have bought this if it was not because I found it in a second hand cd store at a very low price. If you have the Danish album, you don't need it.

If you are a Chess virgin and cannot find the Danish album, chose this for near completeness or the Original Concept Album for best cast.

Avoid the Broadway Cast (extremely incomplete, though well sung) and the Swedish Cast (kind of complete, but otherwise weird and lacking the Chess spirit) if you don't happen to be a total Chess nut.

5 out of 5 stars If you like "Chess: the Musical", you need this CD.......2002-06-28

I have owned, and have been a huge fan of, the original London cast recording of Chess since 1985. I love the mix of classical and rock stylings, and I'm also a major fan of practically anything that Benny and Bjorn turn out. However, I approached this album with some reservations. I know the original album of Chess backwards and forwards, so I was a little skeptical as to how a "live" version would compare to the studio version. I needn't have worried. For the most part, this is an absolutely incredible concert, with only one or two weak spots. It boasts an excellent cast, and a wonderful choir and orchestra. Of the main characters, there is only one returning member from the London concept album; Tommy Korberg reprises his role as the Russian, but my gosh........what a difference a decade makes! He was excellent the first time around, but now, Tommy injects his performance with so much fire, it will make your hair stand on end. The showstopping duet with Svetlana (Lena Ericsson)on "Endgame" is worth the price, alone.......just breathtaking. Not everything works equally as well, but as I said above, there are more "hits" than "misses". Having been a fan of the duo, "Gemini", (Anders and Karin Glenmark), I was thrilled to see them step into the spotlight again, this time as the American and Florence, respectively. I was, however, a little disappointed to discover that Anders' performance is not quite up there with Murray Head's in the original. Anders has the better voice, no doubt, but the conviction is just not the same; Murray was more convincing in the role, and I agree with another reviewer who said they didn't like Anders' histrionics. It's a bit "over the top" at times. As for Karin, she is a fabulous singer, (as is her brother.....don't get me wrong on that point....). My only problem with her is her pronunciation on a few words, but seeing how this CD was recorded in Sweden, released on a Swedish label, and probably really isn't intended for an American market, it's kind of understandable too. A couple of good things to point out in general; this CD finally adds two songs that were missing from the original recording; the gorgeous "Someone Else's Story", (beautifully performed by Karin Glenmark), and "The Soviet Machine", (part of which appears in the track "Opening Ceremony"). The reprise of "Merano" is a great addition at the end of the concert, with an ecstatic audience clapping along and cheering at it's conclusion. All in all, this is a great addition to your collection, even if you have the first recording. With variations in tempos, different interpretations of pieces, and two bonus songs, it's the same musical, and yet, not quite the same.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Youth at their best.......2004-07-17

I love this album, but then: I was a Musical Youth fan since 1982's "Pass The Dutchie" and have remained a fan ever since. I doubt that you could call this 'The Best Of' Musical Youth, as they made some really good tracks that are only on their studio albums and singles (B-sides!), but this definitely IS the collection of all tracks that have been singles (A-sides). This one is practically the same as "Maximum Volune: The Best Of Musical Youth", except is has different liner notes and leaves out the unnecessary 1995 remix of "Dutchie". To conclude: this is a great item for everyone that loves "Pass The Dutchie" or anything else by MY and an addition to the collectors' collection, but wasn't necessary to be released since Universal releases "Maximum Volume" AND One Way released "Anthology".

Don't expect this to be a collection of top opera stars. It is Sarah Brightman. And it is a great Sarah Brightman. At first it seems relaxing. However you can get caught up in the music and find that instead of backgrounds music you are listening to Sarah. A real plus is the fact that all the tracks fit together; you are not going to find the odd track that has horns or drums. I am not going to go through the list or the technical of this CD. Let's just say that it is well worth the price.

Sarah Brightman was a name I heard on occassion. And when I did, it was linked to Andrew Lloyd Webber. However, after buying her CD "Timesles" I fell in love with her music. I now have 3 of her CD's the latest being -- "Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection". However, I do think that "Classics" is by far the BEST. Her choice of songs are perfect. I highly recommend any of her alburms. She is good music to relax to after a bad day. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to the best of gifts -- MUSIC BY SARAH BRIGHTMAN
