All those folks who contemptuously dismiss today's mainstream country and wish they could have been around for the heyday of Lefty Frizzell and Buck Owens are missing the boat. Right now, right in front of us, the Frizzell-like George Strait and Owensesque Dwight Yoakam are quietly assembling two of the great careers in country music history. Further evidence is now available in the form of Yoakam's second greatest-hits package (the first, Just Lookin' for a Hit, collected his 10 best singles from 1986-89). The new collection gathers 11 of his 13 Top 40 country hits from 1991-96 (strangely omitting "Nothing's Changed Here" and "Try Not to Look So Pretty") and adds three new songs. The new ones are good ones--Yoakam gives the ballad "Thinking About Leaving," cowritten with Rodney Crowell, a striking low-note guitar riff; he makes Waylon Jennings's "I'll Go Back to Her" even more traditional than it was; and he lends Queen's rockabilly romp, "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," an authenticity it never had. Yoakam is living proof that it's still possible to combine commercial success and artistic achievement in country. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good collection.......2005-09-05

As the title says, it's a collection of "90's Dwight songs. While I'm not a big fan of "Best Of...." albums, this is definately worthwhile for new Dwight listeners. Of course, the two previously unreleased tracks are just as good as the assortment of radio-played hits they accompany. "I'll Go Back to Her" is absolutely stone cold, tried & true, country, and may be the best track on the album? A+

5 out of 5 stars A thousand miles to somewhere!.......2004-08-11

Dwight Yoakam gives us the best of his millennium in this collection of his greatest hits. The clever title is a clue to the excellence of this country western gem. One hopes his second millennium is as much fun as the first.

4 out of 5 stars The Real Cowboy!!.......2004-04-16

How can you not like Dwight.
I'm not a huge country fan, actually I don't enjoy the genre much, but Dwight Yoakam is great.
His songs are catchy and his songwriting briiliant. He NEVER sounds like some sappy cowboy singing cheesy lyrics about lost love or drinking with buddies out in some hick tavern.
Total toe-tapping music that forces you to have a good time. His whole catalogue of records are worth buying, but if you want to save a few bucks, get this one and be prepared to be totally satisfied!!!
Trust me. Have I ever lied to you before??????!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A cool country collection........2004-04-05

I enjoy alot of classic country music, but there's only one guy I can stand in recent history, it's "Dwight Yoakam". I think this guy is loaded with talent and style, just like this disc is loaded with hits. This 90's collection of his includes "You're The One", "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere", "Fast As You", and "Nothing". Plus my favorite song "Ain't That Lonely Yet", and a couple unreleased tracks. There's also covers of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", and an excellent version of "Suspicious Minds". This disc may be missing a track or two, but there's too much good stuff here to complain. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars encapsulating?....almost.......2003-10-15

Dwight Yoakam is essentially the only 'country' artist or group I listen to in a genre run amok with pretentious Rascal Flatt pop-country hopefuls.
This compilation is a good start for those who are being introduced to Dwight and Pete Anderson's subtle genius. However, for the avid fan, this may seem an inaccurate portrayal of Dwight's discology. Or it could be that only one disc (granted there are 14 tracks) cannot truly justify his accomplishment.
First let me start with the few irks:

-Crazy Little Thing Called Love could have been done without. Dwight loves to do covers but this is one of his few stretches.
-There are no selections from maybe his most overlooked album in A Long Way Home. My jaw hit the floor at the time of purchase when no songs appeared from that album. Couldn't they have scratched one of the four songs from This Time to make room?
-The tunes chosen from the album Gone (Sorry You Asked? , Nothing) weren't really his best stuff on there. True, they were the two singles expected to carry the album. However, the title track and Never Hold You would've put some moxy in the album.

Now the good stuff:
-Kudos for putting Suspicious Minds on there. It was and will always be a fitting rendition of Elvis's classic.
-I was pleasantly surprised by the new tunes. They were every bit as solid as his established tunes without trying to take away from them, considering the compilation format.
-Other than a few eyebrow-raisers, the tunes seem consistent to how Dwight and Pete sought to capture the attention of fans and let them discover more if they so chose.

5 out of 5 stars spectacular.......2007-05-18

Never heard Korean Music before, and when I picked this up, it totally floored me. There is a true folk spirit that bursts right out of this record.

2 out of 5 stars Acquired taste?.......2007-04-01

I bought this CD because I'd heard Andreas Scholl sing Arirang and it was lovely; I wanted to see if there were similarly enchanting tunes to be found in other Korean music and got this CD because it has Arirang on it. But when I played it, I didn't even recognize the "tune." Or anything that my western ears could recognize as a tune, really. If you already like Korean music, then I have no idea how you'd feel about this example of it. It didn't do anything for me.

5 out of 5 stars music.......2002-05-20

I thought this music was saumwhat interesting to what i have listened to. It helps you express yourself. Everyone would love it.

3 out of 5 stars The Joe Hill song collection.......2006-02-26

This is mostly a collection of the songs and poetry supposedly written by the legendary I.W.W. martyr Joe Hill. It is interesting more as an historical collection of the earliest songs of the I.W.W union movement than for its musical content. Much of music used in these songs where written by others. Joe Hill would change the original lyrics to promote the I.W.W. and its socialist movement, and call the so-called hated enemy names.

5 out of 5 stars Humor and sing-alongs for working people.......1999-10-11

I had this record on tape for years and just about wore it out, so I was ecstatic to find it here on CD. The Wobblies' songs definitely take some shots at religion -- the sort of religion that promises "pie in the sky when you die" and advises the oppressed and exploited to wait until then to get some of it. But anyone who cares about making *this* world better needs this record.

3 out of 5 stars Wobblies of the World Untie!.......1998-11-07

In some ways more of a document, this album would probably shock some people into fits. "The boss", the opening track, is, well, shocking for some people.

None the less, the song listing for this is incomplete, the title song is tehre, "sheep and goats", "casey jones the union scab", "bread and roses" and "The Popular Wobbly" are all here.

It's a collection of old Wobbly songs, and a pretty good historical liner on what a wobbly was.

Personally, I find much of the album refreshing, but I'm not typical, nor do I hold with the typical person's sanctity of religious matters.

If you're devout, it's probably going to make you twitch.

If you're not, this is a take on what happens when the common man goes chaotic.

Utah Phillips, as always, is great.

5 out of 5 stars Best Christmas CD available.......2003-12-29

This enthralling CD is the best one out there. The arrangements and performances are top-notch. I only wonder why Naxos has chosen to make all the performances anonymous with its lack of liner notes. Only by going to the Naxos website can you find who is performing what. Among the choirs you will hear on this beautiful CD are the Worcester Cathedral Choir (4 numbers), the Elora Festival Singers (10 numbers) and the Tewkesbury Abbey Choir (6 numbers). If you only have one Christmas CD, this is the one to have.

5 out of 5 stars best christmas music-on one cd!.......2003-07-27

I am a christmas music fanatic. On this cd there are all, plus more, of the songs that I love. It starts with "once in royal david's city",thats sung by a choir and a treble. All the solos on this cd are absolutely amazing. Whether it is by a treble or a man chorister. All the emotions for the songs are right on. Most are sung by the cathedral or abbey choirs. Thats the only thing that bothers me, they don't give you any information on the performers. But I recognize a lot of them. I think Trinity is also on it. but really-its just beautifull. I have no words for it. The price isn't much, if you love christmas music buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful angel voices.......2002-12-11

I played this at work and EVERY person that passed my desk wanted to know what, who and where. By far one of the most moving collections of Christmas music I have ever heard and I have a collection of over a hundred Christmas Albums and CDs.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

An excellent companion to Uakti and Philip Glass's wonderful Aguas de Amazonia, U.K. trio Tuu's One Thousand Years is a densely textured ambient homage to primitive magical woodlands, tribal peoples, and sacred waters. The group features not just the expected synthesizer and samples but flutes, panpipes, clay-pot drums, bowl gongs, and a chiming array of percussion. Creating nearly an hour of luscious soundscape at once both ancient and modern, Tuu seem to find influences ranging from Ravi Shankar to Tuvan throat singing and pygmy song; taking cues too, from Tibetan chant and ceremony and the inherent music of old-growth forests visited by wind and rain. Beginning with the haunting dissonance of "Exile," an interplay of sound and silence, drone and tinkling bell, One Thousand Years plays as a mystic song cycle, quite likely to find an audience beyond listeners already won over to music classified as New Age. --Paige La Grone

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My Pick for Best Tuu Offering.......2002-08-28

Naturally, music resonates differently on an emotional level for each listener, but I found myself coming back to this highly evocative recording over and over again. Particular voices and instrumentations invite specific associations at times, but the pervading mood suggests exotic atmospheres, imaginary journeys and unfamiliar horizons at sunset. If you liked Mesh, you might enjoy the greater subtlety and languid pacing of One Thousand Years.

1 out of 5 stars boring, boring, boring.......2002-03-01

I was so excited about getting this cd. My hopes were distroyed upon first play. It is monotone, repetitive, and boring. In fact it is very annoying. I've tried to play it a few more times, with hopes of changing my mind, but this one is going in the to sell or give away rack.

5 out of 5 stars Early Tuu evokes ancient perspectives & more tranquil times.......2001-12-08

Happily reissued by Waveform, this was an excellent early to mid 90's ambient work. Its slow pace, and atmospheric mix of synths and folk instrumentation, evoke a more human past in which dreaming and spiritual speculation were stronger than any mass media or cultural technology ... heck, way back when, myths and folklore WERE the mass media. The technology ... was spoken history, and musical expression. Not quite slow and serene enough for yoga or other meditation, but a suitable soundtrack to your own afternoon of quiet melancholy for a hidden past. On the [Scary (1) -> Angelic (10)] scale of ambient works, I'd position this at 6. Followed by ALL OUR ANCESTORS, also on Waveform, also highly recommended as a companion CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very good CD........2001-08-14

I was a little disapointed when I discovered the Nick Parkin was not on the CD, but, its very good although he is not present. In fact, Iam most certainly impressed. A very relaxing and trance producing CD, that maintains interest all the way through. One of the better purchases for me this year. I was playing it so much I was afraid I was going to burn myself out, so I put it away for a couple of weeks..highly recomended

5 out of 5 stars They don't get any better than this folks!.......2001-05-12

Whoever described this as deep, ancient atmospheres is on the money. It takes you to remote amazon junglescapes, back to your sofa and everywhere inbetween. BRAVO! A superb effort!

Alright, here's a band with an original sound and lirycs... Not to mention the amazing drummer ! The best track ? "why father" Love that tune right there. I seen them live at hellfest and i was not bored or disapointed at all so if you dont have walls of jericho's " aday & a thousand years" go get it now... I aslo recommend the band "still breathing" for those who enjoy listining to female vocalist in hardcore music and can't stand that .... band known as kittie buy either walls of jericho or still breathing!

4 out of 5 stars Walls of Jericho - A Day and a Thousand Years.......2001-04-24

In the tradition of super-fast, abrasive hardcore, Walls of Jericho is at the top. Packed with high-energy beats, and those always pleasing abrupt starts and stops, it's the perfect album with which to feed, or purge some agression. The best part, though, is the vocals. Candace (the lead singer) has a voice and style unheard of among female performers of today, and if you ever get a chance to see them live, you'll be even more convinced of this. Save for the fact that they have a female singer, though, Walls of Jericho doesn't do a lot that's "progressive" or "origional" like you see with bands like Botch or Refused. Overall, though, this album is a necessary part of anyone's hardcore library.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting..........2006-06-25

I like 'Joy of Moly' better, probably because I find the lyrics on this album weak and distracting. But the guitar work, synthetic sounds and biting bass make the instrumentals come alive, and the lyricless vocals are interesting. The freewheeling melody lines - you never quite know which way the guitar line is going to weave, but it always makes perfect sense - make the album a keeper. I usually cut tracks 2 & 3 from the playlist.

I wish "Into the Wood" had been recorded in 5.1 sound - that could have been fascinating.

"One Thousand Years" is the debut solo release from former King Crimson member Trey Gunn. This album coincided with him joining Crimson and was released around the same time as the band's 1994 comeback EP "Vrooom".
With the exception of the drums, percussion and vocals, every sound on the "One Thousand Years" album is produced with a unique instrument known as the Chapman Stick. The instrument (invented by one Emmett Chapman) is similar to a guitar but utilizes a two-handed tapping technique for playing as opposed to plucking or strumming the strings.
Musically, the album is very similar to King Crimson (circa 1981-84) and features highly rhythmic pieces such as "Killing For London", "The Screen Door and The Flower Girl" and "Take This Wish". Gunn also provides an ambient atmosphere with "The Gift", "Into the Wood" and the title track which boast similarities to Robert Fripp's minimalist 'frippertronic' and 'soundscape' delay techniques. There is also a hint of Eastern/World music in the album's opening track "The Night Air" as well as "Real Life".
With that said, this is a hands-down fine debut from Trey Gunn. It's also a real treat to hear Trey Gunn actually sing on one of his albums as most of his other solo material is either completely instrumental or features other vocalists. It's rather unfortunate that this album has become somewhat difficult to get a hold of in recent years. "One Thousand Years" is definitely worth getting a hold of especially if you're a King Crimson fan or are in the mood for music that is different from the status quo.
A Highly Original and Unique Debut!!

    4 out of 5 stars Good CD!.......2003-06-17

Many folks that are into Trey Gunn differ in what they think is his best work. One thing that you can say about him is that he is a fine musician in EVERYTHING he does. This is my second favorite as I do like "The Joy of Molybdenum" better. This is much sounder than his third CD and different than "The Big Star", which I also like. The thing about Trey is how much he is influenced by King Crimson and how large a part of that bands overall sound he influences. It is not a bad thing and often I would rather listen to one of his solo effort away from KC to really appreciate the music. This is a really great CD! You be the judge. Great spin!

    5 out of 5 stars Original.......2002-01-12

This is truly an original piece of work. Listened to carefully on several planes of audibility, one can hear the dynamic textures working together that makes this album so special. It is smooth and tight as well as adventurous and often deceiving in that one loses focus of the primary movements to hear subtleties throughout. I am unsure if there is a better progressive rock/ambient/tribal rock recording in existence.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Trey Gunn album.......2001-12-02

In this, his first solo album, Trey Gunn, master of the Warr guitar and the stick and full-time member of the eclectic band King Crimson lets his true self out. This is why it's my favorite album by him. His others albums are good as well, but the influence he's received from Robert Fripp becomes more evident, making his music harder to swallow at times, yet nowhere as minimalist as Fripp's. My favorites, "Into The Wood" and "The Gift."
