this is one of the best accordion collections i've ever heard, if you are interested in "french musette" this is where its at
great istrumentals, great vocal numbers, theres even a rare track with Django Rienhardt playing on it too (track#12), i can't recomend it enough!
also-if you want to hear some great modern accordionist check out Rob Burger, Yann Tiersen(amelie soundtrack)

French "Pop" at its best........2005-11-24

Jean Sablon's "Le Fiacre" was why I bought this CD but there is so much more pleasant music on it, and well transferred to CD too. A bonus, thanks to Google, is that it is easy to find all the words, and a rough translation, of each I've tried so far.

A Reissue with Quality.......2005-05-26

This is almost identical in content to another CD I purchased years ago, but the sound quality is much, much better. I am unsure whether the producers simply got their hands on better masters, or whether a different filtering technique is in use. For pre-WW II work the sound quality is very pleasant. This CD is an excellent introduction to the music that captivated the world between wars; my non-French-speaking friends have found themselves enjoying it. It may also serve as a gateway to the purchase of individual artists' volumes. Highly recommended!

During the "Swinging Sixties," London and San Francisco were not the only epicenters of youthful rebellion, psychedelia, and free love. Although initially stunned at losing their centuries-old monopoly on style--and to the Brits of all people--French fashionistas and pop stars embraced the zeitgeist in their own inimitable way. Johnny Hallyday's version of Billy Joe Royal's "Hush," Marie Laforet's take on the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black," Eileen's sultry interpretation of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walking," and Frank Alamo's treatment of the Turtles' "Happy Together" are at once startling, goofy and touching, but then, so were the originals. Among the home-grown tunes, France Gall's "Dady Da Da" and Serge Gainsbourg's "Marilu" share a tinny-sounding charm typical of the period. Each track recalls a time when sexuality was uninhibited but not salacious and packs of mod-attired boys and girls sashayed through the Latin Quarter looking for fun. --Christina Roden

one of my favorites.......2006-06-16

Just put this one in and soak the style, attitude, and fun that everyone of these songs exudes. From covers of "Paint It Black" and "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'", to french gems "7 Heures Du Matin" and "Le College", the CD is a great introduction to an almost forgotten music scene. Even if you don't understand a drop of french, it's a wonderful compilation from beginning to end.

Not as good as V2.......2004-12-29

I have compilations 1 and 2 of this series and v2 is so much more fun and goofy. V1 is not as catchy, not as "hip" I guess. If you're choosing between volumees, choose #2!

Eclectic Francais.......2004-12-10

I found this by chance in the world music section!
Its good,its fine,its top cheese.Really excellent tunes that want to make you swing your pants.If your a lover of random reworkings then check it out.
I just love the reworking of the Stones classic,Paint it Black and as for Claude François doing Eloïse,what a tune.Previous to this i'd only heard The Damned's version.
Buy it and impress your friends.

Je suis mod.......2004-06-08

Are you having a party and you want to dazzle your guests with some strange, hip sounding French bubble gum? Then this is the album for you! You will find yourself giggling a little at first, because it is just such happy, silly music, but after a couple of songs, you will start having a strange urge to wear go-go boots, smoke cigarettes and act snooty. Definitely for the eclectic music lover!

Cafe De Paris.......2002-03-15

All I can say is that the previous reviewer must have cloth ears! No, it's not necessarily background music. The CD is a distillation of bal musette classics that originally were anthologised on the Parisian Fremeaux label. As such it's a handy introduction to the world of bal musette accordion and some of its greatest stars. It's not afraid to deal with the end of the music influenced by the amalgam of swing and manouche gypsy jazz. As for the sound I found nothing wrong with it- no rice krispies effects- and I go back to it again and again.

Beware: Disappointing sound quality.......2001-12-03

This CD is terribly marred by the crackly, tinny recordings. I was not aware how spoiled I am by modern recording technology until I heard this CD. I was totally disappointed by the quality of the recordings. I expected them to be remastered not sounding like they were taped from grandmere's old albums. I don't even listen to it because it is so bad. I'm still looking for some good French background music, because this cd is not it.

Yummy Vingnettes From A Bygone Era.......2001-10-05

These are yummy vingnettes from a bygone era, yet so typically "French." Don't be put off by the word "accordion." You scarcely notice it as these beautiful passages roll by. There is yet an added treat in the appearance of Edith Piaf for those who might be fans. I play this CD over and over, and still can't get enough. Cafe de Paris comes highly recommended.

Evocative of the cobblestoned streets of Europe.......2001-09-01

To paraphrase a bumpersticker: "Use an accordion, go to France."

French accordion music is very specifically French; you won't hear dorky polkas or Cajun/Italian/Irish/cowboy music here. This music is so purely evocative of the feeling you have in Europe: cobblestoned streets; cafés at night filled with chatting, laughing people; and time that encompasses a line back into history. Or at least back fifty years, when men wore their hats frontwards, and women wore gloves. It's a lush recording. You'll feel like your passport has been stamped: FRANCE.

Cafe de Paris, 18 French Accordion Classics.......2001-07-06

If you like accordion music you'll love this cd. It's great for having a romantic dinner with your loved one. Some wine, fresh cut flowers, candle light, a nice meal, and soft accordion music in the background will really set your night in the right direction.

Absolutely love it!.......2006-06-16

Like Volume 1, this CD is another great collection of french pop songs. My personal favorites are "C'est la mode" and "Roller Girl", the latter sung by French New Wave goddess Anna Karina. And you can't forget the last track "Psyche Rock", which was the inspiration to the theme to the tv show "Futurama". All in all, a very fun CD, get it!

Of compilations 1 and 2, this one is definitely the one to get! Much more go-go-ish and fun and goofy. Volume 1 is good, but this one is so much better.

A treasure of French singing from Norman.......2006-09-24

Jessye Norman isn't as well known for her French repertoire as for most of the other things she sang (and she wasn't helped by a stodgy, overly plush Carmen). Even so, two of these recordings in this budget reissue stand out: the Nuits d'Ete and Ravel Scheherazade, otherwise unabailable. Norman sings both in a rich operatic style, and the resuslts are gorgeous. Colin Davis conducts in a relaxed but effective style, but the real show is Norman's amazing vocal control and luscious tone. Perhaps among operatic versions Leontyne Price is even more thrilling, but Norman, a longtime resident of Paris, has much better French.

The second CD consists of a recital with piano of French chansons, many of them off the beaten track. casual listeners may not respond with instant enthusiasm, and it must be said that Norman's voice is rather huge for this delicate, ephemeral genre of songs. In her way, however, this is a sincere, well executed program--not one of my favorites but worthwhile.
