4 out of 5 stars OLD NO. 1, TEXAS COOKING.......2007-02-19

Guy Clark is a minor God and this is a great Gospel of his "stuff", not Gnostic but Texas Gospels, and not gospel music, per se'. If you don't know much about Texas music this is an excellent intro and required listening for those who have found Townes and Steve. An excellent CD for your collection or as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back.......2006-10-21

I had the original LP's but they got lost in one of the many moves made over the years. In CD, the albums have been released and discontinued in a cycle that I couldn't keep up with and never bought. I could only find "The Essential Guy Clark" which is a reasonable facsimile of his first two albums. Still it didn't feel right to listen to a different order of the songs with a couple left out. Now both Guy's first albums are available again and it's truly "essential".

4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-03-13

This album is filled with Classic Texas songs. From Rita Ballou, to LA Freeway, to Like a Coat From the Cold, you will not want to stop listening to this CD and will find yourself singing along every chance you get. Sung in a voice that is uniquely Guy Clark, his throaty version of each song makes it his own. A must for any fan of Texas Country or Guy Clark.

5 out of 5 stars Seventies country-rock.......2005-05-16

Better known as a songwriter, Guy's always-brilliant albums never sold in big quantities. Maybe Guy's voice didn't appeal to mainstream country radio, or maybe his lake of stage presence when performing live counted against him. Although he never became a major star, Guy built up a significant fan base in Britain and America. More significantly, other singers appreciated the quality of his songs and have recorded many of them as well as lending their support on Guy's own recordings. Thus, even if you've never heard any of Guy's own music, you may well have heard some of his songs. This twofer contains Guy's two albums for RCA - the first two albums of his career.

Guy's debut album (Old No 1) occupies the first ten tracks here and is generally regarded as the best album of his career. Among the stars providing harmony vocals are Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle and Sammi Smith. It is extraordinary to think that Steve Earle (whose own music was influenced by Guy's to some extent) didn't make his own breakthrough until more than a decade after this album was recorded. The set opens with Rita Ballou, later covered by Vince Gill (you can find it on his breakthrough album, When I call your name). The most famous songs here are LA freeway (a minor American hit for Jerry Jeff Walker), Texas 1947 (covered by Johnny Cash) and Desperadoes waiting for a train (covered by many different artists).

Following the critical acclaim of his debut, Guy followed it up with the almost equally brilliant Texas cooking, which occupies the last ten tracks here. Rodney and Emmylou again provide harmony, this time joined by Jerry Jeff Walker, Nicolette Larson, Waylon Jennings, Hoyt Axton and Tracy Nelson among others. Further classic songs are to be found here including The last gunfighter ballad (later covered by Johnny Cash).

Subsequent albums provided further songs for others to record including Heartbroke (Ricky Skaggs), She's crazy for leaving (Rodney Crowell) and Old friends (Lacy J Dalton). Guy's versions of those songs can be found elsewhere.

Whatever the reasons for Guy's lack of commercial success, he has proved his worth as a songwriter while there are enough people (including me) who appreciate his music to warrant record companies re-issuing his old material.

5 out of 5 stars Where It All Started.......2004-02-27

Guy Clark is still going strong as a song-writer and performer, but neither he nor anybody else has ever been any better than he is here, with searing, heart-rending songs of loneliness and hurt and exuberantly happy songs about the good times.

There are some great songs here. I think that every small-town boy living in a big city has felt the homesickness that "L.A. Freeway" describes, but none of the rest of us has said it so well, nor has any other world-weary bachelor described his love for his new-found lady as well as Clark does in "Like a Coat From the Cold". "She Ain't Goin' Nowhere" would be the best song ever written about taking charge of your life if Clark hadn't equaled it later with "Better Days". Those are three of the best songs on this CD, but they aren't the only great ones here.

Album Description

European edition of their fifth studio album features a bonus disc of remixes of all the tracks features on the album. 22 tracks in all. Hooverphonic is based in Belgium, a small European country with a strong music scene featuring an open air festival tradition that starts as early as 1959. Hooverphonic's career has been marked from the beginning by international recognition, when the song '2 Wicky' was chosen for the movie 'Stealing Beauty' by Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci. From then on, their music kept appearing in movies, TV shows and commercials in the States, as well as in Spain and Japan. If Hooverphonic's '97 debut 'A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular' clearly showed trip hop roots, the band has evolved since with three albums in five years. In 2001 they headlined at the Werchter festival in front of a crowd of 50.000. In 2003 they released 'Sit Down and Listen to', live recorded with a string quartet and followed by a tour with more than 60 concerts in 9 countries. Sony. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Their absolute best yet!!.......2006-12-28

I really, really enjoy this CD. I think this has to be their best album since "stereophonic" and is their "sweetest" music yet. I really do like all of their other albums also (with Jackie Cane being my least favorite), but this one really stands out to me as being extremely well crafted. And the fact that it includes an additional disc with remixes of every song really expands the value and the listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars Completely Accessible.......2006-06-10

I made a "best of" Hoover CD a few yrs ago and everyone I pass it along to just falls in love with this band. This latest release, though it looks like it's a long way off from being out in the USA (I recommend buying it used), just keeps the magic rolling. It is smooth, fun to listen to, with great hooks, great beats, wonderful vocals. The "A" version of the title track is the coolest song I have heard in years, there is not a single weak track on either disc ("heartbeat" maybe - that one's not a keeper). I am very happy with this CD, its been playing at my house practically every night since I got it. Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Essential For Any Hooverphonic Fan.......2006-03-16

"No More Sweet Music" is actually two albums - the aforementioned title and also a second disc entitled "More Sweet Music". Each of them contain the same 11 songs - by name and lyrics only. I've never heard an album like this before. I gave up deciding which disc is the primary disc. One disc is not comprised of dubbed versions, live versions, outtakes or anything else one could categorize.

Both albums present each song in a very different way. There is no discernable pattern - for instance, songs on one disc are not of a certain genre (trip hop, electronica, etc)..again each disc presents 11 songs, each completely different from the same title on the other disc. Amazing.

That said, the songs themselves are outstanding. I rank this album with Hooverphonics' finest efforts to date. Standout tracks are the title track, "We All Float", "You Love Me to Death", "Dirty Lenses" and the very radio-friendly "You Hurt Me".

Not only is this album a double treat, it is a challenge as well. In no way do I mean this album is inaccessible - it is, very much so. It is a challenge in that you have to get used to hearing two superb but absolutely different versions of the same song. A sensational idea and executed perfectly - an incredibly inspired and innovative feat. Superbly euphoric and dreamy from beginning to end. Highly recommended and well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars More sweet music...please!.......2006-02-07

While a lot of people dislike the direction Hooverphonic went after their debut, I happen to love it (for the most part). I loved A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular, but I've also loved every subsequent album. The one problem that I have had with all their albums (aside from the first) is that there are always a couple tracks that are SO odd and experimental that even I had trouble with them (such as the last three tracks on Presents Jackie Cane, which was otherwise my former favorite Hoover album). That is not the case with No More Sweet Music. They've ditched the over-the-top showtuney experiments in favor of a more cohesive and overall pleasant listening experience. There are enough chill tracks to please fans of their older stuff and enough poppy, flamboyant tracks to please fans of their more recent stuff.

I initially didn't like the idea of two versions of the same album because I expected one to be significantly better and the other to be mostly throw-aways. That is not the case at all, though! Both versions are incredible and I listen to them equally. I'd say the general sound is a combination of all previous albums. There's also an Asian flair among some of the tracks that adds to the cool vibe. More Sweet Music is more organic/loungy while NO More Sweet Music is more electronic/trip-hoppy. If I had to choose, I think I like More Sweet Music just slightly more - mostly because I like its version of "We All Float" much more and its version of the title track is probably my favorite Hoover song ever. Seriously, I'm obsessed with it. My least favorite track is "Music Box" from More Sweet Music. The music and the verses are cool, but the chorus is a bit off-key and just doesn't work for me.

Overall, this is another masterpiece (actually two masterpieces) by one of my favorite (and most underrated) bands. I can't stop playing these discs. This will definitely be one of 2006's best.

4 out of 5 stars Old Hooverphonic is dead, long life new Hooverphonic!.......2005-12-30

The band is changing and this is clearly shows through thier latest album - it is nothing like their first releases. If you enjoyed the original Hooverphonic, you will probably be dissapointed, as you will find "No more sweet music" too commercial, almost pop. On the other hand, if you have more traditional tastes, you will probably like this release as it offers a few catchy melodies, more sophisticated sound and a good beat here and there. One item I must agree with another reviewer - the main singer's vocals are somewhat mediocre.

Album Description

Rock band Kashmir is attracting the ears of more than just the average rock-n-roller these days. Two of the most important figures in the history of the genre, David Bowie and Lou Reed, have lent their voices to the band's newest album No Balance Palace, that is the follow up to the much praised Zitilites. Bowie teams up with lead singer Kasper Eistrup for a duet on 'The Cynic', while ex-Velvet Underground front man Lou Reed reads an Eistrup poem on the 'Black Building' track. According to Kashmir's label, the agreement with Bowie fell into place when Eistrup met him at a concert in New York. Bowie was familiar with Kashmir and offered to lend his efforts to the new album. Kashmir's first single from the album, 'The Curse of Being a Girl' has already been released. Columbia. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars More people need this.......2006-09-26

This is an astonishing album. The whole album is about mood. At times driving rock, otherwise dark and atmospheric, there are very few pieces of modern music that feel so uniquely...epic. If you've found yourself burned out on the repetitiveness of Tool or want something your radio-friendly ear can pick up and enjoy that will be news to your friends, this is it. You need this album in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars This really grows on you!.......2006-02-22

I got this fantastic album for Christmas. It is my first experience with Kashmir, although I have heard people raving about this band for a few years. At first listening it seemed a little bland, but the more I have been listening to it, the better I like it. This is not mind-numbing hit-list music but row-upon-row of great, moody songs. Whenever I take out this album, I tend to put the CD-player on perpetual repeat.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2006-01-25

I barely ever give 5 stars to albums. This album blows my mind. How Kashmir has not been widely discovered in the states in beyond me. I high recommend this album. It has the depth and mood of fimiliar to "you forgot it in people" and "ok computer".

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Kashmir .......2005-11-16

This is the best album of the danish band since they found their sound in the good life, i'm so proud of being a fan since the begining, this album is not like the others, they have now a live sound, kind of like the sound you get when you listen to them live, my favorite the cynic with the deep voice of david bowie ,a song to remember, i hope they como to mexico soon,

Though the sound quality isn't quite up to par on this show recorded , Rodney's jokes definitely are. He sounds a little more low-key on this recording, as it sounds like it's a small crowd there to see him. But as always, Rodney delivers the funny.

I was lucky enough to come across The Rifles and The Fratellis (amongst others) back in March of 2006 due to the wonderful last.fm and I haven't been able to stop listening since. Much to my amazement, the Fratellis went on to be chart-toppers in the UK out of nowhere and are seeing some success here in the states some months later.

Sadly, the better band of the two has still flown under the radar in their own country and in America. No Love Lost is without a doubt the best debut album of 2006 and the best overall album of 2006. Frequent comparisons are made to The Jam and The Clash and they're understandable, but not necessarily valid. If you do enjoy the music of that era though -- please give The Rifles a shot. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Discover this one, Britpop fans!.......2006-11-29

I can't believe this poppy, upbeat CD doesn't have a huge amount of buzz -- it's one of my four favorites of the year. Just to give an idea: My others are the "Razorlight" CD, Gomez' "How We Operate" and the Arctic Monkeys' "Whatever People Say About Me." This one's sorta in between those, stylistically -- guitar-based pop, with great drums, and a smidge more production than the other three. The lead singer sounds a bit like Billy Bragg (though the songs do not) and the sound is a bit reminiscent of Housemartins. Anyway, try it. It's worth the price of an import.

3 out of 5 stars Truly Artistic & Innovative For The Times!.......2007-05-26

Christina comes out from the shadows to bring a #1 album, #1 video, and now a new concept to popular music. How does she manage to come up with something different? It's her re-invention of the times! This is her first single off her album "Back To Basics". Her album and single plus video were the opening approach to come back to her fans as well as mend her past. Thus bringing into the spotlight classic styles of music combining hints of R&B, jazzy soulful moods, nice elegant artwork and much talent and phenomenal production.

Main Version (3:47) is a great song many have already heard revolutionizing a new era of performers incorporating a touch of class combined with the Southern New Orleans R&B jazzy soulful sounds of horns, trumpets, and more. There is glamour, glitz, and excellent vocals. While the singing is a bit loud for my taste, it was nonetheless flawless.

Jake Ridley Remix (6:01) is a completely different opening with heavy banging bass, trance, and a long transition of melody and instruments bringing a more dance effect as compared to the main version.

Ospina & Sullivan Remix (3:45) is unlike the previous tracks in that there is more disco sounding vibes accompanied with towering trance, drums, singing, and faster paced instruments.

Acappella Version (3:30) has no instruments except a few in between. Her vocals are flawless and are not boosted by auto-tune or any computer enhancements. Although, quite astonishing the on your ears sound was a bit annoying to me.

A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

5 out of 5 stars A New Classic! Thank You Dido!.......2006-01-31

I first bought the regular album "No Angel" because of Dido's great pop-singles from "Life For Rent". It took me quite some time to realize that this album, her debut, was actually just as great - well greater!!

Fewer songs on this album have the immediate hit qualities that seem to be all over its successor, but every song seem to grow on you; and I have no doubts that this will become a classic. One of the very few albums with no unimportant tracks. There is something heavenly about Dido's breathy voice. I sometimes think of her a British counterpart of Suzanne Vega, though she actually does not sound like her, or like anyone else that I know of, for that matter.

Her music combines the best elements of pop, folk, rock, techno and even hip-hop.

My favourites used to be "Here With Me", "Don't Think of Me", "Thank You" and "No Angel"; now they're all favourites.

Obviously I had to look out for this enchanced version of the album.

I have to admit that I don't care very much for the extended versions of "Hunter", "Take My Hand" and "Thank You", but the Lukas Burton Mix of "Here With Me" is great and the new track "Christmas Day" is heartbreakingly outstanding. Like a Sandy Denny type folksong, only written in the 21st century. This track alone justifies the extra expenses for this CD

      "Thank You" Dido!

      5 out of 5 stars Stunning DIDO.......2003-10-01

This is one of the CDs which you can play from start to end. Pleasure for your ears and yourself! Music & lyrics are both very much to satisfy your aesthetics, but you probably know this all already. Infact, the purpose of writing this review is not-to-repeat what every one have already said.
Just want to mention/warn about the content in CDs, especially if you are buying it because it is enhanced with video and other pictorial contents. A word of caution, the videos included are in QuickTime format and nearly impossible to play full screen. So unless you are a die-hard fan of dido and you want this one anyways, go for it otherwise buy the regular version.
and yeah, i forgot to mention the five stars! :-)

      5 out of 5 stars A musical masterpiece.......2001-08-08

Dido, the new artist, has taken the world by storm. This artist was first released to the world in 'Stan' by Eminem, which had excerpts of 'Thank you', but she held no empty promises, as her albumn has more potential than any other yet. Without being old fashioned, mainstream pop or just odd, Dido has combined the feel of Loreena McKinnett, and added the voice, which is unique in many ways, but similar to Sinead O'Connor. 1 - Here with me - the theme to the TV series 'Roswell'. Good effort, but a little bit mainstream. 4/5. 2 - Hunter - a nice catchy piece about loss of expression. Poetic in a nice way. Love it. 5/5. 3 - All you want - an interesting piece, at first strange, but it grows on you. The theme doesn't quite fit the tune, but relaxing otherwise. 4/5. 4 - My lover's gone - definitely one of the best tunes in the cd. Sounds very traditional, although not too original. Very relaxing, and has an oriental feeling to it. 5/5. 5 - All you want - more pop, deals with the common theme of heartbreak, but it's always nice to see a song like that with some promise. 5/5. 6 - Thank You - popular theme, used in Stan, and as the Sliding Doors closing theme. Somehow it sounds better in Stan, where the depressiveness refers to something. 4/5. 7 - Honestly Ok- a curious piece, very useful when everything goes wrong. 5/5. 8 - Slide - Beautiful. Voice shines out and the background is minimalized for the best effect. 5/5. 9 - Isobel - My favourite. Beautiful drumming. Smooth voice. Soothing lyrics. Stunning tune. Brilliant. 5/5. 10 - I'm no angel - this is supposedly what the album was named after. It's not hard to see why. The Dido's voice shines better in this tune than any other, and the words are humouring. 5/5 11 - My life - Somehow i get the feeling i've heard this before. Nice anyhow - 4/5. 12 - Take my hand - Love the violins. Gives the piece a roomy effect. The piece is great, but a little too long. 4/5.
