Disappointing!.......2007-06-15

He sounds like Justin Timberlake in this CD rather than his personal style. I agree with much that has been written here and I tend to think that this CD was catered for US charts. I'm not impressed with it and I also think his voice sounds much better in his native tongue of Turkish. This english CD sounds like it's going to be his only one. It's not bad but it's NOT Tarkan. If you're expecting a CD like Karma or Dudu this is nothing like them.

Oh man, I fell in love with Tarkan in 3 hours. Buy this Cd. I'm not even Turkish and I'm in love with his songs! I'd say his Turkish albums are better... His turkish songs are more natural. His "Come Closer" album sounds like it's been waaaay aimed to succeed in the American music industry. Nonetheeless, this album is a MUST for Tarkan fans. :D

I agree with Ay from New Jersey. I, too, am a huge fan of Tarkan, and was looking forward to this album. For me it turned out to be a bit of a bust. Here and there we get glimpses of his Turkish genius, but for the most part, "Come Closer" sounds like every other R&B Lite album out there. I was expecting a much more creative blend of East and West. It is unfortunate that the Pussycat Dolls' "Buttons" has more impact than much of the material on this album. It almost seems as if Tarkan were writing music to cater to "American" tastes, rather than writing from the heart. If this is the case, then Tarkan, be true to yourself. Your fans love your creativity.

I was closer before.......2006-11-15

This is a great CD if you take issue with listening to music recorded in a language not native to your own. Judging by Tarkan's already outrageous popularity, that really doesn't seem to be a problem. Therefore, if you are ALREADY a Tarkan fan you will not be over the moon with this CD. His Turkish language CD's are far surperior to this one and I think that's because he has tried to "tone down" the middle eastern flavor of his previous music in order to appeal to a more "main stream" (i.e. AMERICAN) audience. To those who are fond of a more "Western", less "ethnic" sound to their pop music, then you will love this CD. It's very dancey, it's well mixed, and Tarkan's voice is smoothe and silky as ever. I like the CD enough to give it 4 stars, but give me "Dudu" any day!

Tarkan is SO much better than this..........2006-11-12

OK, this is horrible. As a Turkish-American, I have been listening to Tarkan since I was about 16 (I am 30 now) and I absolutely adore his music. I was SO looking forward to this album- we have been saying that Americans would LOVE his style. This album, however, does not show his style and that "je ne sais quoi" that makes him a Euro-mega star. It sounds like a poor imitation of Britany Spears, N'Sync or Spice Girls circa 1999. Actually, I believe that some of his stuff resembles Wham from the early 80s, and again, not a flattering, fun Wham but a sad, poor imitation Wham. This album is the pits- American Customers, PLEASE oh PLEASE don't buy this, but please do buy "Kuzu Kuzu" or "Sikidim" or one of his other, older Turkish albums. Those are fantastic.

Good stuff.......2007-05-15

What a great little collection of dance-worthy Gipsy Kings music. I've been a fan since I first saw them on Saturday Night Live all those years ago and picked up their first cassette, but I have to admit that a couple of their later projects have been a little tougher to like. So when I picked up "Pasajero," it was admittedly a moment of boredom when curiosity got the better of me. I was very pleasantly surprised by the infectious fun "radio gitana" style of the first song, as well as songs like Mira la chica, Donde esta mi amor, Amor, La tounga and Pasajero.

This is a good group of songs. They've even added a little salsa like rhythm into their music this time on the song Chan Chan. There are a nice variety of rhythms on this cd. Very enjoyable to listen to. Worth the purchase price!

Some catchy, others goofy and disappointing.......2007-01-10

I realize the Gipsy Kings are mostly about the sound, and about the gypsy rumba flamenca. Their incorporation of reggae into their repetoire is great. But man, their lyrics do bite. Los Gitanos...llevan pena. No saben...boo hoo.

Truly the best flamenco band not only in Espania (Spain) but in de mundo (the world). I am spanish thanks to my great grandmother who was black irish (spanish-irish). Ole and Viva La Espania. I love the Gipsy Kings

Diego "El Cigala" is one of the of the foremost current proponents of flamenco music coming from Spain. This double disc finds him in fine form.The first twelve songs on the track listing are studio recordings found on disc 1 and the last six make up disc 2 which was recorded live from theTeatro Real in Madrid one summer day in 2002. There is plenty of variety as is indicated by the track listing of bulerias , tangos etc. Essentially it is the full spectrum of flamenco but with a mix of tradition and contemporary flavors. Take for example the buleria "Gitanos de la cava" where the jazz trumpet and bass lines create a nuevo flamenco sound that mixes perfectly with "El Cigalas" mournful vocals. The beautiful and lively guajira "Senor del aire" features Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes playing a prominent part of the song on the ivory keys for a great song dedicated to Juan Valderrama. Valdes is featured on several other songs most notably on the bolero "Amar y vivir" that has a Cuba meets Spain feel to it. "La fuente de Bebo" is a happy buleria that has a rhythmic interchange between "El Cigala" and Valdes that is similar to the fine disc the two recorded entitled "Lagrimas Negras" which is also recommended.The use of flute infuses a jazzy Middle Eastern flair to many of the songs which results in more nuevo flamenco meets old school flamenco. The chorus and palmas(hand clapping )can be find throughout the disc often in exuberant fashion. The live from Teatro Real disc 2 is pure flamenco and features the only solea on both discs entitled "Fuente de conocimiento" where the guitar is pure and compliments "El Cigalas" voice.The fandango closing out the disc entitled "El dia que yo me muero"is dedicated to matador Curro Romero much to the delight of the audience for a fitting ending to a nice double disc. A pleasing addition to any flamenco collection , this CD is pure flamenco with only hints of nuevo flamenco. Recommended for the flamenco afficionado of today.

Different style - I like it.......2007-04-16

I think that I first heard Estopas, Demonios Song - and fell in love with the band. This album is slightly different - but the songs are of great quality/production/rythm and plot.
I have to admit that the first time I listened to this CD, I didnt like it - except for the song Vacaciones - which is their #1 hit from this CD.
But soon after the second time - you realize that there is more to the songs - a good rap - a nice story - a lot of feeling. This CD will have you remember the month where you bought it, because you'll listen to it so much and find it distinct, unique and charming!

This is a very nice album by Diego el Cigala. It was a great addition to my collection. I recommend it to lovers of spanish modern music.

Cigala finds his own voice.......2007-01-02

No doubt about it, "CIGALA" has found his own mark upon music writing. This is a very tasty album very much worthwhile to have. Its not harsh. It blends a fusion of sounds starting from Jazz, Flamenco and somewhat pop, but its still flamenco. Thing is noawadays many are purists, which is a problem, because no one plays like Nino Ricardo from the 1930's! Come on! Wake up! This a great album. Music, like language, evolves. I would strongly recommend it.

This is what flamenco is all about..........2006-04-22

Even though Lagrimas Negras is one of my absolute favorites, you have to understand that Diego El Cigala is a flamenco cantaor. In Lagrimas Negras, Fernando Trueba blends a pure flamenco singer with an Afro-Cuban pianist, Bebo Valdés, with mostly Latinamerican boleros. This concept is revolutionary, and made a great hit worldwide. I totally disagree with the first review for this album. If you understand and like flamenco, this is a WONDERFUL production and a real tribute to the great Picasso, who before becoming a legend, was a Malagueñito... If 5 minutes of Cante Flamenco is too much for you, then give pop singer Alejandro Sanz a shot...

Good addition to your CD collection........2006-04-05

I like this CD. I think that if you have a problem with the more traditional sound of flamenco singers, as the previous reviewer stated, then yes, you might not like this. Diego's voice sounds a bit more nasal, but nonetheless he is able to get across passion and fire where necessary. Lagrimas Negras is one of my absolute favorites of all time, but I would not compare that work to something like this. Those songs required his voice to go deeper so that he could hit the higher notes on some of the songs. You'll see what I mean if you watch the making of Lagrimas Negras on the Blanco y Negro DVD.

I would recommend this CD.

Diego back to the real Flamenco..........2005-12-11

If you loved "Lagrimas Negras" and could not wait for his next project...Well , you might be disapointed ! Diego sounds very different on this project , and not so great at my taste . I have a real problem with flamenco singers , and I must say that that I can listen to so much of it . Unfortunatly , On this CD I found his singing very anoying , I did not find the heart that he had on "Lagrimas Negras" , too many tracks are too similar .
Sorry Diego we love you , but not on this project .

Great CD.......2005-05-17

There are some exceptionally good songs on this CD. My favorite is "A Miles". This is a very enjoyable track with a dark, sultry melody and a strong, almost hip-hop-like, beat. "¿Dónde Está Tu Cariño?" is simply a beautiful song sung beautifully by Tomatito's young daughter. "Porque Tú lo Vales" is a well-crafted solea with some very melodic falsetas and a cool ending. "En Casa del Herrero" is one of the most entertaining bulerias I've ever heard; the tag-team duet with Potito and Guadiana is always a treat to hear since these are two of my favorite flamenco singers. "Gallibando" is a tango that is just as majestic as "¿Dónde Está Tu Cariño?", and El Cigala does an excellent job on the vocals. This is a great CD that should satisfy both seasoned flamenco-listeners and beginners.

Aqua Dulce Is Awesome.......2005-02-14

Tomatito is my favorite flamenco guitarist living today. This album is a wonderful effort from Tomatito and every bit as entertaining as his other solo efforts. The album does have some mainstream, flamenco-inspired tunes, but never strays from the genre. The recording and mastering is excellent and well produced. Whether you are a fan of traditional flamenco guitar or just a novice listener of duende, this album is a great addition to anyone's collection. I recommend any and all of Tomatito's recordings and Aqua Dulce is a brilliant example of the guitar masterery of Tomatito.

Fantastic New Flemenco Cd.......2004-10-02

Though I am a novice Flamenco fan I do recognize the true beauty in this CD. The song "Donde esta tu cariño" has one of the most hauntingly beautiful melodies that I have ever heard. It captures the searingly sad spirit from where flamenco originates.

Unbelievably beautiful.......2005-12-05

This album by Tekameli, a group that plays gypsy music, is excellent. It is a wonderful trip through the music styles of India, the Middle East and Spain. This music is like a cloud that started its journey in India, picked up the essence of music along its way and finally reached Spain where it showered its bounty. Sometimes joyous, at times contemplative and at other times wistful - an emotional trip.
