Good stuff.......2007-05-15

What a great little collection of dance-worthy Gipsy Kings music. I've been a fan since I first saw them on Saturday Night Live all those years ago and picked up their first cassette, but I have to admit that a couple of their later projects have been a little tougher to like. So when I picked up "Pasajero," it was admittedly a moment of boredom when curiosity got the better of me. I was very pleasantly surprised by the infectious fun "radio gitana" style of the first song, as well as songs like Mira la chica, Donde esta mi amor, Amor, La tounga and Pasajero.

This is a good group of songs. They've even added a little salsa like rhythm into their music this time on the song Chan Chan. There are a nice variety of rhythms on this cd. Very enjoyable to listen to. Worth the purchase price!

Some catchy, others goofy and disappointing.......2007-01-10

I realize the Gipsy Kings are mostly about the sound, and about the gypsy rumba flamenca. Their incorporation of reggae into their repetoire is great. But man, their lyrics do bite. Los Gitanos...llevan pena. No saben...boo hoo.

Truly the best flamenco band not only in Espania (Spain) but in de mundo (the world). I am spanish thanks to my great grandmother who was black irish (spanish-irish). Ole and Viva La Espania. I love the Gipsy Kings

listening to the music is like enjoying the beautiful surreal movie once again without seeing it. The more I listen, the more I love it - it's the Amercian Dream story, it's the Iggy Pop music, it's the Johnny Depp narrative make it a valuable collectible CD. This is a new version, the recording is excellent.

This is the album that sounds even better without the Movie.
Goran Bregovic mixed traditional european Folk music with more modern styled instrumental and rock music.with this mix and his talent to make a moving and touching songs he created a masterpiece,delightfull voyage to teh darkest and most mysterious places...Goran added sytnhs,bass,delicate guitar (simmilar a bit to mike Oldfield),and a massive wall of drums...Check out "Dreams","Old home movie","Gunpowder","Dreams" and a huge hit "Tv screen" with Iggy pop on vocals.Definitly one of my Desert-island albums,a must have for all instrumental music fans and for everyone as well!!!!

Versatile Composer.......2003-06-30

As most fans of Bregovic know, he is a versatile composer who blends well contemporary music technology with traditional flavors of eastern European gypsy and still manages to remain above the par of the usual techno-studio corporate music that attempts to stamp the "World Music" label on its own concoctions. "Arizona Dream" doesn't disappoint even the hard to please of Bregovic fans.

Jazz Blues at its best.......2007-01-31

Paris was the place to be before and after WWII, and Jazz in Paris captures some of those immortal moments such as Django's Blues. This is a wonderful introdution to the great guitarist as he plays some classic pieces such as Septermber Song, Brazil and Blues Primitif. The disc is divided into two performances at the Le Quintette de Hot Club in 1947, with his brother Joseph joining him on the second set on rhythm guitar. The series is beautifully packaged and you will love checking out the many other titles such as Django and Company, which includes Stephane Grappelli.

Incredible Guitarist.......2005-09-26

Django Reinhardt is an incredible guitarist and probably the most rated Gypsy Jazz player. Django played guitar in his own style and rhythm as he was caught in fire when he was 18 years old. The doctors tried to ampute his hand but he denies it. On that time, Django was presented with a guitar which have shown him the light of success. If you are into Jazz and love Swing music, then you can buy this one. This is a nice album.

Unbelievably beautiful.......2005-12-05

This album by Tekameli, a group that plays gypsy music, is excellent. It is a wonderful trip through the music styles of India, the Middle East and Spain. This music is like a cloud that started its journey in India, picked up the essence of music along its way and finally reached Spain where it showered its bounty. Sometimes joyous, at times contemplative and at other times wistful - an emotional trip. An excellent mix of sacred and secular music of the gypsies of the Perpignan region, this CD is a "desert island" one.

Sweet Madeira on a Desert Island .......2006-08-06

I heard Sophie on Desert Island Discs twice this week, yesterday as a guest and earlier in the week David Edgar chose one of her tracks for his Island. Then after listening to 2 more tracks on Women's Hour I have to agree with the Daily Mail she's "primed for solo stardom". The music is unique - intelligent gypsy mixed with cool,haunting and romantic beats. She has you dancing, laughing and crying. As The Telegraph says "If you haven't heard of her, you will". BUY IT, you won't regret it.

The music includes styles as russian folk, instrumental violin music and gypsy. It it truly exciting and passionate music for people who like to open their horizon and listen to something new.

Truly Madly Tasty!.......2006-04-20

Prepare to be hooked. I love any album that "takes some getting into," but this has enough atmosphere and musicality to etch its way into any romantic's head after about three playings. This is very much for lovers of tunes and life. It reminds me, in different places, of such diverse pleasures as quirky old Stackridge (from Bristol, UK) and Shakti (the John Mclaughlin/Shankar/Hussein fusion of guitar, violin and tabla).

There's jolly sawing, sensitive phrasing and baroque rocking. You can also feel, pretty consistently, the approval beaming in from Django and Stephane. There's variety here, then; certainly enough to delineate separate tracks and have you cueing around for individual delights that may subsequently take your fancy; but the whole disk is united by its mood of creativity and experiment around an authentic core, a distinctive style that beautifully combines elements of Russian, Continental, Eastern, Classical and no small measure of the avant garde - but all held together by a sense of real pleasure in the entertainment value of such forms as the Tango.

This album also brings back joyous memories of a one-off Nigel Kennedy concert with the Kroke band one night in Richmond (on Thames) a couple of years ago. (It was a largely "corporate" do and the assembled tuxedos and gowns seemed initially readier for a bit of Vivaldi - but the sheer joy and originality grew on most after a while; and instantaneously so, in the case of our own company's then receptionist, a young Slovakian more usually noted for her disco prowess but at once enchanted by sounds she immediately greeted with joyous cries of "It's my music!") There's something about Sophie Solomon's tunes that has staid old English me wanting to shout the same thing.

It helps that there's also a very decent pop sensibility at work, too (notable contributions from KT Tunstall and Ralph Fiennes included). Imagine being at a rock concert that suddenly presented you with a Cossack knees-up or transported you to a souk or synagogue, maybe put you on a bike through Paris or took you through the streets of London with incredibly good buskers doing string quartets and polkas on different corners. Then imagine all of the above shaken into a very tasteful cocktail with a unique flavour of its own. Poison Sweet Madeira is an absolutely delicious surprise, from the "world" (if you must) / symphonically rocking and reeling opening track, via various charms and tunes, to the terrific, Penguin (Caf? Orchestra)-flavoured finale.

Also, please eliminate from the start any qualms about this being the latest "lovely young thing does the classical bit." It started, I suppose, with Vanessa-Mae and has continued with some distressing recent examples; but, honestly, this lady's writing and playing is way, way beyond such ephemera, so pardon the same breath, and all that. The artiste herself, certainly, looks very fetching on the cover. It's your ears, however, that are in for an authentic, accomplished musical experience. This woman can really play; plus she writes tunes your brain and heart want to hear. She's not afraid of austerity and has a way of playing that should help make some of the less immediate material here - yes, klezmer included - more popular. For us, the best example is the Light That Never Dies, an utterly classy track that has Ralph Fiennes reciting an imagist poem against music that would be a perfect soundtrack to the result of the animators of Belleville Rendezvous having a go at a Third Man remake... or something in that vein.

Above all, what you get here is that rare treat of audible talent: fine, accurate technique, virtuoso, passionate playing and music that comes from deep cultural roots and achieves an effect that's at once old and familiar, fresh and intriguing. Fire up the samovar, get the vodka from the freezer, slice some spicy sausage, unwrap some chocolate and get down to this great, great album!

Fantastic CD! The oboist with this group continues to astound with each of their releases. I don't personally care for the vocal portions added to LeTombeau, but I wonder what Ravel might have thought? The 2 new members of the quartet really seem to pull their weight (and I really liked the former members!) The new accordionist just dazzles. This CD has something to offer for lovers of all musical flavors.

Lanza in (mostly) top form.......2004-11-28

This is a "twofer" CD, consisting of the 1955 soundtrack to the movie Serenade and the 1956 Cavalcade of Show Tunes album. Before I go any further, however, I should acknowledge that I was one of the liner note writers for this release. But I have no financial interest in the CD, and am simply reviewing it here because to date no one else has commented on it!

Serenade marked Lanza's return to films after an absence of three years, and revealed a voice that had darkened considerably, while still retaining its brilliant upper register. Stylistically, this is also a much-improved artist in many respects from the sometimes-wayward tenor of the early 1950s. Anyone who compares Lanza's superbly operatic renditions here of Amor Ti Vieta, Lamento di Federico, and O Paradiso with his earlier versions (all featured on the CD Mario Lanza Sings Opera Arias and Duets) will immediately detect the new-found control in his singing.

That's not to say that all of the Serenade material is outstanding. Lanza's renditions of Nessun Dorma, O Soave Fanciulla, Di Quella Pira, and the title song are below par, with the tenor uncharacteristically strained in the upper register and rough in his approach. But redeeming everything are the oustanding renditions of the arias mentioned in the previous paragraph, together with Lanza's sensitive singing of Di Rigori Armato from Der Rosenkavalier, a superb Torna a Surriento, and an unsurpassed Dio! Mi Potevi Scagliar from Otello. Lanza also recorded the Act III duet from Otello with Licia Albanese for this film, but time constraints have reduced it to a brief extract here. (The entire duet, however, can be heard on the aforementioned Arias & Duets CD.)

The other album featured here showcases the romantic side of Lanza. Beautifully recorded, Cavalcade includes passionate renditions of Yours is My Heart Alone, Only a Rose, Will You Remember, and other selections from operetta and musical comedy. Although Lanza may indeed be *too* zestful here for some tastes, vocally at least, he is at the height of his powers. The voice is rich and round - gloriously consistent throughout its registers - and the abundance of effortless B flats, Bs, and even a high C reveal a tenor in formidable form.

Highly recommended.
