Album Description

In 2004, Harry Christophers and The Sixteen will celebrate 25 years of music making. To commemorate this milestone, CORO has released a handsome, slip-case edition of their original recordings. The haunting tones of Allegri's Miserere are unique and instantly recognizable even to those who know little sacred choral music, and features an other-worldly treble solo. No connoisseur of the choral arts will want to be without this recording of Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli. Along with his Stabat Mater it combines exquisite contrapuntal poise with a translucent setting of the words, whereby music and text complement each other to the detriment of neither. The chromaticism and blossoming cadences of Lotti's eight part Crucifixus have made it a work loved by both choirs and listeners.

5 out of 5 stars BEATS FOOTBALL.......2007-05-18

There I was sitting in the car - listening to the football: Derby V Southampton. Saints were winning - thank you God. I was also waiting for my two lads who were in a boxing session.

I turned the radio to Classic FM - and there is was: The Sixteen Miserere. I was mesmorised....spell - bound by the interconnecting harmonies and the truly inspirational melodies. I was hooked and listened to the whole piece.

I eventually turned back to the Football. We lost on penalties. But I had discovered a musical phenomenon and bought the CD.

This is one of those choral recordings that makes you slow down and say "wow" at the conclusion.

what a delight! over 40 little snippets of Residential atonal ditties! Each one with the carnival like weird space cadet like ditties of ear candy! Each is one minute long, all the "fat" has been cut from each one.

Never boring, cause each piece is completely different from the other! Except for the Pee Wee herman quality of each, these toe tappers are not to be played to a date, she or he will forever think you are weird after hearing these!

    SO WHAT?!

Join the United Mutations! Baptize thyself in the world of our eyeball buddies!

And if you like these, be sure to get the DVD- Resident's Commercial DVD! SEE interpretations of these ditties by spacy artists, and get on a "Natural Fry!"

5 out of 5 stars More proof why the Residents are pioneers, not just wack jobs.......2006-11-04

Many listeners got their first taste of the Residents on the "Dr. Demento" radio program back in late 1979 or 1980. The song was "The Laughing Song" and I never forgot how wonderfully bizarre it was.
Louisiana swamp rats who relocated to San Francisco (a good choice, given the musical tolerance the Bay Area has boasted over the years) and created a stir with never revealing their identities and making head size eyeballs famous, the Residents specialized in proto-synth programming that predated Devo and just about every cutting edge artist, with the possible exception of Can, the German experimental legends. While comedy is the main focal point of these twisted genius' work, they also experiment with sounds and textures never before attempted or replicated. In fact, "Eskimo", their biggest selling album, is somewhat serious, a five part soundscape that defies description in print.
For those not quite ready to take the plunge with "Eskimo", "The Commercial Album" is a good starting point as each selection is exactly one minute long, making up forty snippets of amazing hooks, noises, and even the occasional pretty tune. Fans of electronic music like NIN, meet your roots. Reznor could never have created his work without these pioneers. As so often is the case, some of the world's most obscure artists also act as the most influential. Laugh along, but don't forget the new ground that is constantly being broken as you listen to "The Commercial Album". Also, pick up "Duck Stab/Buster & Glen", the other Residents' masterwork.

5 out of 5 stars The Residents rule!.......2006-09-27

If you enjoy weird and crazy synth. sounds and quick commercial style pop songs encapsuled in 1 minute, than this album is definitely for you. The songs are very enjoyable and come in quick succession and before you know it you have listened to the whole cd.
From a documentary I saw on the Residents, which was hosted by Penn and Teller from 1990, this album was created to show how a pop song is really akin to a commercial jingle; having a couple of versus and than a chorus or refrain and just repeated several times within the 1 minute span. Suprisingly this is tame from their other material which at times can sound punk to a person whose never heard of them. In my opinion, their one of the greatest performance artists that came out of the 70's. Their music at times sounds destructured or disjointed or even chaotic. There are music videos to several of these tracks that are very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars encyclopedia of popular music- of another planet.......2006-04-04

I think of this album alongside the Clash's "Sandinista!"- Like that sprawling Clash album, the Residents have absorbed a bewildering array of music forms. But whereas the Clash celebrates those forms more or less intact, the Residents completely deconstruct them. Nothing is recognizable. Yet, the rudiments of music form and structure are here: melody, rhythm, texture. They also perform a experiment on this album that is time-honored in the annals of pop music: just how far can you strip a song down and retain its essence? Every one of the forty songs here are completely idiosyncratic and recognizable, yet pared down so far they could almost be considered snippets if they didn't lack recognizable structure (which they have).

Ok, sounds pretty freaky. But really, I think this is one of the Residents most accessible albums. For one thing, their strange ideas are delivered in compact units. For another, conventional structure dominates. Verse-chorus-verse. Compared to the Commercial album, Eskimo is a terrifying exercise in formlessness. So some might enjoy this as a "gateway" album to the truly deep weirdness of their other albums.

I first bought this album when I was in high school. Zappa's Freak Out and Uncle Meat were already in my collection, so this album has never seemed all that ominous. It even seems quaint and- dare I say it- cute at times. If you have been there, done that, you make think the same. If not, this album would be a great introduction to a pretty interesting corner of the popular music landscape.

    4 out of 5 stars Ingenious idea.......2006-01-01

    Take the concept of TV commercials and how we define pop music as " commercial " and marry the two of them together. It's a very shrewd idea, even ballsy. Is it any good though? Surprisingly so. The songs or, since we're talking of The Commercial Album, commercials barely last a minute long, a near ideal length for a commercial. But if you want to take it in a pop context the songs are not long enough to guarantee memorability. But that is only on first listen. They can be extremely memorable. Like my father used to say " Short. Sharp. Concise. And to the point." This is what this album is. It displays some cutting ideas on love and life which can be thought provoking. Take Love Is for example, the lyrics to which are;

"Love is only loneliness divided by another
Love is only living for the lonely
Love is only loneliness divided by another
And I know that life is lonely"

Some may find that stupid but I think it's a pretty interesting thought and indeed it could be more truthful then anyone of us will care to admit.

However, this album is worthwhile if you want to see these eyeballed men work at their most shrewdly inspired. Now I'd like to see how those video commercials worked on that DVD.......

This page is clearly for the soundtrack CD but the reviews seem to be for the movie. I will comment on the CD. This is a great collection of songs that will get you moving. John Waters has an excellent ear for rock and pop songs. The sound quality is good, especially when you consider how old these recordings are. Whatever you may think of the movie the soundtrack is a lot of fun.

    "PINK FLAMINGOS"

    Filth to Be Judged By

    Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Pink Flamingos"--what memories come to mind!!!!!!!!!!!! Perhaps one of the most infamous films of all times shows how trash can be regarded as film---and we love it. This is the movie by which all other trash movies are measured. John Waters' early film has become a classic of bad taste. "Pink Flamingos" is a must see movie and for those of you who have not seen it, run to get a copy--you may never be the same afterwards.
"Pink Flamingos" is the film that called attention to John Waters and his sense of warped talent and this is his hallmark. Divine is "the filthiest person alive' as she says of herself (sexual identification not important). She plays Babs Johnson who lives in a trailer in the area near Baltimore with Cracker, her perverted son and with Edie, the Egg Lady who happens to be Babs's mother. Mom lives in a playpen and eats volumes of eggs dressed in her underwear. Also in the group is Miss Cotton, a pal.
Raymond and Connie Marble work a black market adoption agency in their basement and they want Divine's title of the filthiest person alive so they declare war on her. Babs goes into hiding and the Marbles find her and begin the battle of filth.
I have often wondered if Waters used the film as a ruler to see how far he could go. It is so tasteless and rude that we wonder why it was made and then we find ourselves watching it over and over. It is little more than an exercise in bad taste and is not for the queasy or the faint of heart. It really is not a movie made for review or summary as it is the penultimate bad joke. It is about everything perverse and is a tribute to that. No review can come near describing the movie as it is not just a movie but an experience starring a very fat and ugly drag queen that eats dog poop for no reason whatsoever. But the movie is real, there is no pretense. It manages to make the most disgusting character in film appear to be endearing in a really sick way.
Some say it is nothing more than distasteful while I say it is a sign of the times and the direction in which America was going. This is the one that says "we did it all" and nothing s left to the imagination. Waters has pulled all the perversity of the world into one film. It is hard to decide whether to laugh or to groan but I must admit that there is something about "Pink Flamingos" that Makes me watch every so often. Bad taste or not, I love this movie--I suppose I am as tasteless as the people that made the film and I am damned proud of that.

      4 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2003-05-07

Our high school orchestra played the serenade for strings by Dvorak. I thought we did a pretty good job, but this recording is really, really good. The two works on this disk are not the best known pieces by this Czech composer, but they're definately worthy of lasting fame. A classic.

4 out of 5 stars Dovorak softer side.......2000-08-27

Unlike many of Dovorak's works these works are quieter and softer and yet still they have the nervous energy that most of his pieces do. I honestly thought that these works would be boring, but I was wrong. I really liked the CD. It had many charming and nice sections and also many faster paced lively secions. Anybody will enjoy the CD. I bet even people who don't like classical music will like this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Where were you in '62........2002-06-15

Nostalgia, much as love, is subjective. For this reviewer, the peak time for pop-rock music was the period that started roughly when Elvis returned from the U. S. Army in 1960 and ended when the Beatles conquered America in 1964. Doo-Wop was dominant and folk-rock was stirring. A youthful cheerfulness and fresh enthusiasm was carried over into popular music. Maybe we were young and dumb, but we sure had fun. Then Oswald killed Kennedy, we watched our innocence crash in flames, and the music gradually changed. Instead of Doo-Wop and classic R&B, the later '60s music featured vapid lyrics, drug-induced rhythms, and limp-wristed hippie music. Pop music lost much of its light-hearted pep. Fizzle replaced pizzazz. Contrast Little Eva's "The Loco-Motion" (1962) with Spiral Staircase's "More Today Than Yesterday" (1969) and you get the idea.

This album includes good examples of the best period in pop-rock music. Shelley Fabares took time off from "The Donna Reed Show" long enough to sing "Johnny Angel." In 1961, The Tokens recorded one of the all-time great folk-rock songs, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," with the distinctive "Wimoweh" background chant. Dion's "Donna the Prima Donna" has a fine hand-clapping beat. Neil Sedaka sings No. 1 hit "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do." Ricky Nelson does "Travelin' Man" and Little Peggy Marsh makes feminists ill with "I Will Follow Him." WCBS FM101.1 is New York's Oldies station. This album is part of their 25th anniversary celebration. It includes brief comments on each song in the liner notes. Although late '60s music is also included, the good stuff dominates and carries this album. Repeat listening increases the enjoyment. ;-)

Wow, it's just like listening to the local oldies station. If you are in to oldies like I am, you must have this collection. These are the original recordings also!!! I just can't get over how real the music was then. It seems to be so contrived now. This collection is a perfect example of what music is like when it's not contrived. I get chills when I hear "A Lover's concerto" and theme from "A Summer Place". The music may not have the same effect on you, but I still highly recommend this CD. It is a must for any collection!!!

The West End slogan of "Where the Sun Sets ... and the Stars Rise" has never been more true than with this mastermix set. MAW are the perfect choice to the anniversary mix. These guys are the REAL dynamic duo. They have once again remixed selected songs and maintained the songs' integrity and original feel. Favorite tracks include "Can't You Feel It", "Let's Go Dancin'", "Is It All Over My Face" and "All Night (I Can Do It Right)." Furthermore, the mastermix itself is excellent. This cd set is the perfect introduction of the foundations of House Music!

The theme from The Rebel is not even the Johnny Cash song even though it says so. Its the generic instumental which was tacked onto the opening credits of the show when it was re-syndicated in the 80s and they had a problem clearing the rights to the song.

If you buy this for the main purpose of having your favorite ORIGINAL tv themes in you cd collection, then it's really what you will get. However, the buyer must know that all the tracks are in MONO only, and the overall sound is very compressed like were the 45 rpm in the 50's and 60's.. Remember that this double cd came from an LP and I think they only transfered to cd the original vinyl (minus the surface noise and adding some promotions and presentations from the stars of the programs). Again, all this makes it a very nostalgic atmosphere because it sounds like if you're listening to your old tv set in mono with the very heavy compressed sound we were used to back then. Let say that I'm a little bit disapointed of the sound quality. My assumption is that they lifted the tracks directly from the tv reels instead of going back to the vaults and get the original masters. It would have improved the sound a lot and probably get us more stereo version on disc two. I had hoped to find my favorite Man From U.N.C.L.E.'s theme with the flute and bongos in great stereo. Well, just forget about it. They used the fourth year's theme with the dominant organ. Some of the themes can be found in much better sound on other tv themes cds. I recommend for that matter Cult Fiction where they took care of the quality of the sources. As an example, you can find in that cd a marvelous version of Hawaii 5-0 by the Ventures wich is much more enjoyable to listen than the one we find in this actual double cd. I know that it was probably impossible to find better audio sources for certain themes, especially from the 50's . So TV sound remains TV sound and you cannot expect much more than that. And trying to be fair I'd say that , considering the limitations, probably nobody could do do better than that In one word, don't by this for the sound quality, it's very poor. If you buy it, it sould be just because you want to get the nostalgic feeling of listening to your old favorite tv themes like you used to hear to them from your tv set back in the 50's or 60's depending on you age. It would have been marvelous if the producers would or could have had access to the masters. Again, who knows they probably tried... If you want to make a comparison: consider the great job that was done on the Ultra-Lounge Volume 7 cd titled : The Crime Scenes or Volume 13 titled TV Town. Maybe thoses versions are not the original tv soundtracks, but soundwise, they are in much better shape and all in glorious stereo. This actual double cd sounds like it was made from a bad cassette tape as where the Ultra-Lounges are coming from the first generation masters from Capitol Records. That's why my conclusion is that apart from the pure nostalgic point of view, this double cd is not worth the buy. Back then, nobody tought that those tv themes would have meant so much for babyboomers. Oh, one last thing, I don't work for Ultra-lounge, I just enjoyed them all so much. Too bad they stop the series.

I've been a listener to WCBS-FM in New York since the summer of 1976-Without a doubt, they're the premier oldies station in America-This volume of 70's hits is fantastic-You get such great songs as "Love Will Keep Us Together","Joy To The World",& "American Pie"-CBS-FM program director Joe Mc Coy personally hand picked every song included-I wish CBS-FM could broadcast their sound over the Internet-That way,the rest of the country could hear how great a station it is.
