5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Pink Floyd's 1979 double album The Wall was that strangest of beasts: a concept album, driven by a tortured rock-star protagonist, so obtusely personal it sometimes bordered on the inscrutable. But history was kind to the Roger Waters-spawned epic; when the communist bloc crumbled in 1989, taking the symbolic Berlin Wall with it, it inspired the ex-Floyd bassist and singer to frame his most ambitious work as another familiar tortured-rock-star conceit: the all-star benefit-concert TV broadcast. The shifting tides of history have undermined much of this remastered, double-disc soundtrack's momentous context, leaving behind a larger-than-life spectacle that, depending on one's viewpoint, could represent rock's most overarching populism--or the beginning of the end. Still, the star-heavy concept yields some unexpected surprises, from the Scorpions' bracing opening blast through haunting reinventions of "Mother" (Sinead O'Connor) and "Goodbye Blue Sky" (Joni Mitchell)--performances that blunt the oft-suspect misogyny of Waters's sprawling tale. Bryan Adams injects some vocal fire into "Empty Spaces" and "Young Lust," but by the time Waters, company, a massed German orchestra, choir, and the Military Orchestra of the Soviet Union reach the album's crescendos the event has gone so far over the top that it seems like nothing short of a neo-operatic Andrew Lloyd Webber wet dream. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars one of the worst live cds.......2007-05-10

How can anyone even give this thing one star? ever heard of Live in the FLesh? one of the best live cd's EVER? from anyone? this thing flat blows, you can hardly hear it, it sounds like it was recorded from some bootlegger in the back row. and none of the songs mesh for beans. just a flat out waste of payola. The Flesh, the one and only. waiting for the new tours output of a cd/dvd hope its as good as FLesh but I dunno Doyle pretty much about stole the show in FLesh and he is not playing guitar on current tour. but the ladies are singing backup again so hoping for the best!

5 out of 5 stars Roger at his finest work.......2007-03-09

First about the video then about the CD:

I first saw this video about three months ago when i found it at my local CD/Video bargain place for a buck! I was blown away at the superb way this work, already a master in itself was presented for the show. I kinda wish i would of seen this version (the stage production) first before i saw the movie. the live stage production was easier to follow. i love the music of course and had to have the CD. All of the different artist doing the songs from the best album ever. All of the performances are outstanding!!!! It all fits like a good ole pair of your favorite comfy worn jeans. Buy this CD and the DVD you will be amazed. PS: I loved it so much i purchased the DVD right here on Amazon for a Christmas gift to my dearest friends.

5 out of 5 stars Was at the show and the DVD is a good reproduction.......2006-06-23

While nothing will ever come close to the experience of being there, the DVD did a pretty good job of capturing the moment. As snap shot in history, the summer of 1990. The Belin wall had just come down the previous November. On July 1st, for the first time since the wall went up, East and West Belin could freely cross the "Wall", Check Point Charlie was out of a job. This concert took place in Potsdam Platz, only months earlier, this was no man's land. You could be shot for being there. On this night in July, the world was finally at peace (Iraq would invade Kuwait two weeks later), I was standing in a crowd with Germans, English, French and countless other nationalities. We were all there taking in one of he greatest stages ever contructed for a concert. Roger Waters did it proud, to compare it to Pink Floyd's the Wall conerts (which I saw in Nassua Colisium in 1979) would be unfair. This concert was more than just the music and show, it was about a time in history. "Tear Down The Wall!!" it was already coming down. To watch the DVD, brings these memories streaming back and in these troubled times, is comforting to know that at one time peace was achieved.

2 out of 5 stars A miss version of The Wall without Pink Floyd.......2005-12-02

Roger Waters' The Wall in Berlin was released in September of 1990.
This performance of The Wall was first recorded on July 21, 1990 and I heard the original radio broadcast.
Although this is a live album, portions of it were taken from a re-do of the show and the previous night's dress rehearsal. The original radio broadcast had the microphones all messing up and the power going out during The Thin Ice and Mother.
Initially, in a July, 1989 radio interview, Roger initially thought of having ex-bandmates David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright play with him. Even David went through lawyers to get the OK to do it when asked at the Knebworth 1990 show backstage but then Roger shot down his ex-bandmates' offer in early July(hypocritical of Roger at the time). Then, Roger tried to get artists like Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart and Peter Gabriel(this would have been superb) for the performance. Unfortunately, those artists were either unavailable or wanted money so in the end he got some good artists(The Scorpions(whom were excellent on In the Flesh), Joni Mitchell(pretty good on Goodbye Blue Sky), Bryan Adams(his Young Lust was good), Paul Carrack(he did Hey You very well)) and some very bad artists(Van Morrison and The Band(they destroyed David Gilmour's parts on Comfortably Numb), Cyndi Lauper(her duetting with Roger on Another Brick in the Wall(pt. 2) was atrocious), Ute Lemper(tolerable on The Thin Ice but Mariah Carey-esquely annoying on The Trial), Sinead O' Connor(awful here but ironically was good on Rick Wright's Broken China) and Jerry Hall(her as the groupie was unnecessary)) for the performance.
Whilst original Wall show stalwarts Snowy White and Peter Wood plus Andy Fairweather-Low and Graham Broad were good, Rick DiFonso desecrated David Gilmour's solos thinking he was Eddie Van Halen.
Fortunately, Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980 does great live justice to The Wall as it is the classic Floyd lineup performing The Wall(and there are videos filmed from those shows). If I were you, I'd spend my money on Is There Anybody Out There?.
Grab The Wall in Berlin ONLY if you are a collector.

5 out of 5 stars It's Not Pink Floyd But It's The Next Best Thing.......2005-02-10

Not having been a big Roger Waters fan, this DVD changed my whole attitude and opinion of Roger Waters. This DVD/CD may not be Pink Floyd, but it sure is the next best thing. I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD. I had viewed Roger Waters as a whining, moaning, groaning, and complaining child who just wanted to have something to cry about. After seeing this DVD, that all changed. He was so cool, calm, and collected in this DVD and so relaxed. I was impressed with the way he shared the spotlight with other musicians and didn't cop an attitude by self-centeredness, selfishness, and egotism. I think he had the idea of performing this version of The Wall the same way Pink Floyd did the live version of The Wall. It was superbly done. All the musicians were superb especially Cyndi Lauper and Bryan Adams. You can always tell Cyndi even if you don't hear her because of her eccentricities. If you're not a Roger Waters fan or if you have doubts about him, check out The Wall: Live In Berlin and his other live album In The Flesh. I can guarantee you will have a change of heart. My friend gave me a copy of this DVD and after seeing it, I was totally blown away by the performance and came away with a different attitude toward Roger Waters. I was so impressed with this DVD/CD and the In The Flesh DVD I had to order the CDs. I do not regret it for a minute. I would highly recommend both these albums for any Pink Floyd or Roger Waters fan. You won't regret it!

3 out of 5 stars Is viewing better than just listening????.......2007-02-06

The music content of this SACD is excellent. However, the audio although very good, is presented essentially in concert mode. I would therefore suggest that viewing the concert on DVD (if available) would probably be a greater experience than just listening to the cd. That does not detract from the 'listenability' of this quality SACD.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome concert.......2003-07-14

I like this concert. I think Roger Waters did a really good job of getting a good support group for this show. It's a shame that he couldn't get the support group that belongs in this concert - the other members of Pink Floyd. It's interesting that the two Germanies could unite, but Pink Floyd couldn't.
As I said, I liked the people that he did get. The Scorpions for In the Flesh, Sinead O' Conner for Mother and others. It is interesting that Roger Waters sounded old for this concert and not for In The Flesh.
I am happy they released this one in SACD. Now if they would release the others.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-02-20

Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11

After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16

When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13

This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.

I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.

So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!

1 out of 5 stars ... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

5 out of 5 stars Music in its rawest and purest form: FABULOUS.......2006-10-21

Willy Deville Accoustic Trio Live in Berlin is a performance that is unique nowadays. Willy is leaning more towards traditional Rhythm and Blues in a way that is raw, pure and just exellent. he also has great performances of his well known songs like Spanish Harlem, YOu better move on, Big Blue Diamond, Carmelia,... and a heart ripping version of the Everly Brother's "Let it be me" .. This CD is one that you MUST have.... I saw him Live just three days ago in Luxemburg, Europe and it was just as amazing as this cd.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Aging Pirate.......2006-04-25

If I was wealthy, I'd own everything with this man's name on it but "Live in Berlin" might be my favorite record. It is intimately produced; you can hear Willy's sniffs, giggles, finger snaps and guitar thumps. It's like being in his living room. Some highlights are "Spanish Harlem" where his brain slips into a special "handsome" gear and he flirts wildly with an unsuspecting microphone. His phrasing is deliberately reluctant and results in a super erotic delivery, which may be why I occasionally walk into walls while listening to him. (that's ok, Willy, I'd take a bonk on the head for you anytime). "All By Myself" has a tasty little breakdown after the 1st solo. There is a fierce ache to "Night Falls" and excruciating restraint in "Heaven Stood Still" where even the tough guys in the audience are momentarily humbled. "Who's Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Little Foot?" is a great treat and "Let It Be Me" could wrench loose a rusted bolt. Willy can tug at your heart like nothing else. Seth Farber (piano) is a treasure and master of finesse and with the ever-present David Keyes flawlessly manhandling an upright bass, it's no wonder Willy seems fearless. This feels like one of those moments that will never be duplicated again. I can't imagine Willy ever being in better voice. What a rare and perfect listen!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-01-05

I cannot remember when I have been so captivated by the raw emotion expressed when Willy sings. He lives each song .....I am new to the Willy Deville fan club but am adding to my cd collection as quickly as my budget allows.
To me his voice sounds like a cross between Joe Cocker amd Bill Medley with a sprinkle of Louis Armstrong thrown in,yet at the same time uniquely his own style. One cannot pigeonhole him to one specific style,at times it is the Blues,,,,then Rock but...always fabulous. When you listen to Willy sing you feel as if he is singing to you and you alone. This double CD compilation is a must for all Willy Deville fans.

5 out of 5 stars Je Ne T'Aime Pas .......2006-03-02

if i had to pick a favorite song on this cd, that would be the one...i heard this one more than the others. " one life to live," is superb...she did all these songs in one take ! and the passion and romance is undeniable...i had never listened to cabaret before this. i became a fan.

5 out of 5 stars Superb musicianship!.......2002-01-19

This CD is thoroughly enjoyable. O'Callaghan's passionate interpretations of these cabaret/parlour style songs are never less than convincing in their colourful delivery. My particular favorite's are two of the Weill numbers: "Je ne t'aime pas", which is so full of heart-wrenching angst, and "Youkali", because it is so rarely heard. The lesser known works of Poulenc and Satie are also each sparkling little treasures. The musicians all seem to "gel" together beautifully, and one can imagine that they had a really great time recording this disc together. Fantastic artistry!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent recording by a fast-rising cabaret star.......1998-11-04

This first CD by the talented soprano Patricia O'Callaghan is truly excellent. Ms. O'Callaghan has the rare ability to mesmerize the listener through her intuitive and expressive vocal instrument. Her voice and vocal style are unique..she imitates no one. This is the sign of a true artist. The selections, ranging from Poulenc to Weill to a rarely heard gem by George Gershwin, are performed with meticulous attention to detail. Nuances, articulation of the text combined with superb vocal technique are very evident. If you haven't yet purchased Youkali, put it on your definite "to do" list tomorrow!!!

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars A representative introduction to Furtwängler's art.......2003-02-15

We are not exactly short on recordings by Wilhelm Furtwängler, and for collectors and aficionados of the great German conductor this box of 6 CDs with live recordings from 1944-1953 will undoubtedly be a severe disappointment. The only rarity is the (otherwise unnecessary) Tchaikovsky "Pathétique" from Cairo, 1951. All the rest are reissues and have been released by various labels in different couplings.

This set is therefore mainly destined for anybody wanting a well-programmed and representative introduction to the art of Furtwängler. Except for the already mentioned Tchaikovsky, the "Rapsodie espagnole" by Ravel, and the "Symphonic Metamorphosis" by Hindemith, interesting but not really indispensable, the rest of the box is required listening. There are stunningly revelatory cuts of Brahms 2nd (Vienna, 1945), Beethoven's 7th (Berlin, 1953), Schubert's 8th (Berlin, 1952), Bruckner's 8th (Vienna 1944), and a formidable disc of orchestral excerpts from Wagner's operas. On top of that the Vienna 1944 recording of Beethoven's Leonore III is a real killer. The "Haydn Variations" by Brahms, "Manfred" by Schumann, "Don Juan" by Strauss, and the "Symphony" by Franck are equally rewarding.

It goes without saying that the sound quality of these live recordings from the 1940s and 1950s is variable, although within context everything is acceptable and well remastered (There is some serious distortion though in the final movement of the Franck "Symphony").

This set comes in yet a new limited-edition historical series "Original Masters" from Deutsche Grammophon. The liner notes emphasizing the rarity of the recordings (so-called "buried musical treasures") are however to be taken with more than a grain of salt. The presentation of the CDs in paper bags with a transparent cover isn't exactly a great idea either.

Indispensable for those music lovers willing to find out what Wilhelm Furtwängler is all about.
