Great showcase of handbell music.......1999-06-02

If you think handbells can only play Christmas music, think again.

This CD has such a variety of material that both the newcomer to handbells and experienced ringers will enjoy it. It also will intrigue any classical music lover. Some selections are arrangements for handbells, and some are original works for handbells. Familiar works take on a fresh new face when played on handbells, and the original works showcase the unique tonal qualities of the bells. It's amazing to think that only a handful of people are juggling 55 or so bells to make the music happen. It's also remarkable the range of color and voice that can come from what is essentially one large instrument.

I highly recommend this recording for any listener.

A ground-breaking handbell recording.......1999-02-25

Maybe the first handbell recording to combine exquisite sonic fidelity, incredible repertoire, solid technical playing, and amazing unity of ensemble. If you've only heard Segovia, Bream, or Williams play "Leyenda," you're in for a treat! The overall program is varied, featuring spirituals and folksongs; highlights are the haunting "Nocturne," two final two scenes from Copland's "Rodeo," and of course "Leyenda." The readings on this disc give justification to the rising wave of handbell ringing sweeping the country.

Good CD.......2006-10-26

Albert React has always been an underappreciated band. I feel very strongly that this CD is one of the best of 2006. They have toned down their sound going from post hardcoreish to complete indie experimental bliss. Gabe's vocals soar on this album. I really think he has one of the best voices in this genre. I can't stress enough how much people should get this. If you are into bands like the appleseed cast, you need to own this. I am very saddened that Albert React didn't get signed by a better label, no offense to CI but the world needs to be able to enjoy this music. I would say tracks 2-5 are the best. The only complaint would be that the vocals might have been recorded too low? I don't know much about that type of stuff though. So buy this CD.

As a beginning handbell choir member, this CD gives me lofty aspirations. After only seven years, this group of twelve ringers plays as one. I hope some day to be able to play half as well as this group. The bells are clear and precise. The music is familiar enough for any classical music lover to enjoy even though it is on different instruments. I found the music very relaxing to listen to.

Not what I'd expected, but good just the same..........2004-10-14

I originally saw a brief review for Robkin's latest album in a music trade magazine. Having never heard of her before, I wouldn't have paid much attention, except that Tony Levin and Jerry Marotta were credited as the hired guns to anchor her rhythm section. I have tremendous respect for the distinctive style that both these men brought to the music of Peter Gabriel and King Crimson. Combined with the praise being lavished on Robkin for her singing and songwriting prowess, I bought the album with only the vaguest clue as to what it would sound like.

I had two primary reactions on listened to the first track: 1) Why hadn't the reviewer noted that Robkin's voice could easily be mistaken for that of Paula Cole? and 2) Where the heck was the typically powerful sound of Levin's bass and complex polyrhythms of Marotta's drumming? Based on the review and my expectations of my bass/drum heroes, I had expected something more rocking and more... I dunno... just MORE.

But as I listened to the rest of the CD, I gradually accepted it for what it was, instead of what I hoped it would be. It's not a rock album, but rather a smoothly produced, rather restrained collection of adult contemporary songs (for lack of a better term). Robkin's voice IS amazing, having all the power and inflection of Paula Cole, but not the Girrrl attitude. The writing has a strong pop sensibility which doesn't hold any great musical surprises, but makes all the songs readily accessible. The lyrics aren't as clever as those of Joni Mitchell or Tori Amos, but still have enough depth to warrant careful listening.

As for Tony and Jerry, well, there's a good reason why these guys are so well known as studio musicians. If the producer says "don't upstage the featured artist", they know exactly how to settle back into the pocket and round out the music without being noticed as individuals. While I appreciate them more when they ARE displaying their signature sound, I have to admire how they served the needs of this album by staying well within the supportive role they were hired for.

The album continues to grow on me. Already, I'm hooked on the achingly beautiful title track and I know with repeated listenings, the rest of the songs will win me over too.

The best Christmas Bells yet!.......2001-06-09

I am so glad I have this wonderful CD of Christmas songs with bells. The bells are truly played as one instrument and you can really get into the Christmas spirit. It's so hard to record bells well, but they did it! I always tell my friends to BUY this CD to add to their Christmas music collection. In fact, I give the CDs away as gifts! A GREAT RECORDING!

A nice departure.......2001-06-08

While we all associate bells with Christmas, we think more of bells ringing wildly in their towers. And when we think of Christmas music, we think schmaltz. This album features a different kind of bells -- handbells -- and music that is anything but schmaltzy. As I listen to this beautiful, seamless music, I am in awe of the skills required to make it sound that way: a dozen people handling dozens of bells, sounding as one instrument. The musical selections are varied, the performance top-notch, and the experience of listening is marvelous. I do not hesitate to recommend this CD to any listener.

Sonos is very accomplished, yes, and they play what they do very well, but nothing really appealed to me as "exciting" bell music. I have nothing against classical music, but they need perhaps faster songs or something of that sort. Other than that, it was great!

A smooth, relaxing Christmas album.......2000-02-01

"Christmas with Sonos Handbell Ensemble" continues the tradition of excellent playing and fine engineering pioneered on Sonos' first disc. The repertoire runs the gamut, but leans toward the quiet, mellow carols and tunes, and the other instruments featured (flute & clarinet) are perfectly balanced and blended with the overall sound. The acoustic is marvelous, greatly benefitting from the superb room at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch and audiophile-quality production.

Of special interest is the bluesy/gospel "Christmas Tidings" (Mary Had a Baby Boy/Go Tell It On the Mountain) with clarinet, the lovely "Panis Angelicus" with flute, and a quirky arrangement of "Carol of the Bells," which does not do what you expect! There's the ever-popular nutcracker, along with the Leroy Anderson's hit "Sleigh Ride." A moody "Veni Emmanuel" is paired with a mediaeval-sounding "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen." There's even a little Prokofiev: the "Troika" (another kind of sleigh ride), from Lt. Kije.

This CD is great for parties and background music but can also be brought up and appreciated for its detail and finer qualities. A rare combination.

Wonderful Music.......2002-10-11

Whoever doesn't like this CD is crazy! Yes, there is a lot of flute (thank goodness). This flutist is the most talented I have ever heard in real life or in recordings. I actually met him, and his playing is even more captivating live! This CD (the only album he would let be recorded of himself) is worth ten times as much as the listed price.

Where are the handbells????.......2001-12-18

Having played the flute, i appreciate it. However, i did NOT buy a selection of music advertized as Hand Bell Ringing to be INUNDATED and OVERPOWERED by flute playing !!! Yes, it is classical, yes it is Seasonal, but in my opinion it crossed the line. It should have been titled Seasonal Flute Music with Hand Bells Every-So-Often in the Background, until you get to cut 17 of the 18 total !!!

SONOS Does It Again!.......2001-09-12

After a long wait, The Sonos Handbell Ensembles new album is finaly out, and it was worth waiting for. "A Very Classical Christmas" is all I have come to expect from Sonos, and then some. One again recorded in 24 bit HD digital @ Skywalker Sounds' Scoring stage, their incredible sound is captured for our holiday pleasure. Timothy Day's flute blends harmoniously and effortlessly with the bells. What more could you ask for, for your Handbell &/or Christmas collections than Tchaikovsky, Bach, Vivaldi, Motzart & Handel on one CD. You start to feel as if the bells were the instrument they originally wrote for.
Don't miss this rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus! If you think Handbells aren't musical, you haven't heard this!!!
