Tender Shepherd CD and Harp Sheet Music.......2007-02-04

This CD is lovely and I have the harp sheet music that goes with the CD. Kim is a lovely harpist and also an excellent teacher both in person and with her instructional books. Her arrangements for the songs that go with the CD are wonderful. My only complaint is that the sheet music seems to be missing the Tender Shepherd song that is included on the CD. Which is a shame because it is a lovely arrangement and the piano arrangement from the Broadway Musical is not nearly as nice.

Kim Robertson is one of the best Celtic harpers of the day. She performs her own arrangements of tastefully selected melodies, and she does this with skill and artistry.

One would expect an element of simplicity in a album of lullabies. Robertson's simplicity is radiant. This is one of the most relaxing CDs I own and I recommend it for everyone who likes New Age music, Celtic music, or simply gentle music. This is the 5th copy of Tender Shepherd that I have purchased. When people hear my CD, they love it, so I share it with them and buy another! This also makes a great new baby gift.

The best bedtime music ever.......2006-10-25

This CD was given to us as a gift when my son was born. He fell asleep to it every night as an infant, and now that he has rediscovered it at age 8, he listens to it every night again. If you're looking for a unique baby gift, I highly recommend this CD!

William Coulter is an acoustic guitar player who has explored Celtic music for years, as on the exquisite Celtic Requiem CD with singer Mary McLaughlin. Coulter brings a chamber music sound to Celtic music on his latest foray. Taking traditional songs from Ireland, Scotland, and England, Coulter weaves them into original arrangements that include his frequent collaborators from the Santa Cruz and San Francisco area. Among them are cellist Barry Phillips and his wife, wind player Shelley Phillips; pianist Paul Machlis from Skyedance; and Northumbrian piper and concertina player Alastair Anderson.

Together these musicians weave a delicate embrace around familiar tunes like "Women of Ireland" and the devastatingly forlorn "Stor mo Chroi," as well as some lesser known but achingly beautiful songs such as "The Crooked Road to Lisdoonvarna," on which he adds the Turkish kaval to this Irish tune. Following up on the success of his previous recordings, Celtic Crossing and Celtic Sessions, William Coulter once again draws from the rich repertoire of airs and dances from Scotland and Ireland for this latest recording. Along with traditional works, Coulter has also selected a number of contemporary compositions for this recording, including a wonderful duet with concertina master Alistair Anderson on Anderson's "Dog Leap Stairs."

Coulter is joined on two tracks by virtuoso classical guitarist Benjamin Verdery. Together they perform the Sean Ó Riada classic, "Women of Ireland" and the beautiful Turlogh Ó Carolan air, "Elanor Plunkett." The result is a lyrical, emotional and enchanting listening experience.

Coulter does it again.......2001-04-18

I have this little image in my head of how I would like to wind down after a tough day at work. The image goes like this-- I come home and plop down in a great big overstuffed sofa with a cup of hot tea, a good magazine, and I play a CD of soothing, wonderful music. Rarely (oh, heck-- never) do I actually get to live out this little dream. Life is just too hectic. However, if I were to snatch enough time to indulge myself, this CD would be the one I'd put on. It is simply beautiful Irish music played on guitar (with many assorted accompanying instruments). Coulter is a wonderful artist with a real feel for the soul of Irish music. So go home, find a comfy chair, sip your tea, and put on "The Crooked Road." You won't be disappointed.

McGlynn's Fancy at a bargain price.......2007-03-15

This CD is mis-titled: it is Celtic but not strictly airs, and mis-labeled with the artist as McGynn on Amazon. This is I believe the same collection that went by the name McGlynn's Fancy and that you can get for $30. Arty McGlynn is an obviously facile guitarist and more importantly a wonderful musician. Each time I listen to this CD I find new things to like. The first things that hit me were that he plays one O'Carolan tune straight and one almost impressionistically, and that he takes some liberties with the trad tune Blackbird that seem Gypsy to my ear. My wife, a harp and keyboard player is similarly delighted with the CD, so your odds are 2/2. Just kidding -- music is individual. This is a good bet though if you like Celtic virtuosity and/or interesting approaches to Celtic tunes.

The Lark At My Door.......2004-06-23

William Coulter has developed a reputation for very tasteful arrangements of Celtic 'standards' and a fine technical control of his instrument - the guitar. Much of this reputation is based on the style he first displayed in Celtic Crossing. Since that time he has gone on to be part or lead in a further eight albums. Considering the time span, this demonstrates both Coulters ability as a musician and the depth of his creative energy. The album also contains the talents of Shelley and Barry Phillips, Kevin Burke, and several others.

This is very much a traditional album, and one that prefers a soft and intimate tone. The focus is always on the music, rather than on the brilliance of any particular player. There is plenty of that, though, but it is always in keeping with the moment. This is 'cup of tea and staring out the window' music, and has a seductive grace that is often sadly lacking. I suppose that there is such a thing as too much Irish music in the house, but this album will always be welcome.

this is an amazing recording. in a world of overly percussive guitar styles and a lost identity amidst much nouveax celtic music, coulter brings a sense of purity and melody that is not only refreshing, but yet simple and memorable. i find myself whistling tunes after listening to the cd. the clarity of the recording makes you feel there.

Coulter understands Irish music on the guitar completely........1999-07-01

William Coulter is a classicly trained musician, with the acute analytical skills that implies, but it is the heart and sweetness of his playing that won me over. I have heard him solo and in bands since he was a student at US Santa Cruz, with other luminaries of British Isles music and playing my guitar in an ice cream shop. He shines, just shines. This album captures more of his immediacy and glow than any other. Perfect album to introduce the uninitiated to Irish music.

William Coulter brings a wealth of musical talent to this delightful collection of instrumental Celtic tunes. Some are ancient, some of his own composing (Stor Mo Chroi, written on the night of his son's birth, is a delight) and all are well-chosen and played. Coulter is one of a highly talented group of northern California musicians who consistently produce some of the best instrumental Celtic music available today. Wonderful Harp Music!.......2007-05-13

I recently went to see Ms. Shelhart herself perform the harp, and I must say that her skill for this undeniably complex instrument is breathtaking. The songs she played were so flowing and marvelous that I bought her CD directly afterwards. Limberlost Angel is a beautiful, peaceful, and sometimes even energizing musical experience. I would recommend it to anyone, even if that person doesn't really listen to harp music.

The greatest player you've never heard of.......2005-08-22

John Holmquist seldom makes anyone's "best classical guitarist" list, but in his prime he was second to none. Unfortunately, his best recordings were for a now defunct label, and it's unlikely they'll ever resurface. But this Naxos recording will give you a taste. Holmquist's tone and sense of timing on this recording put most guitarists to shame. For example, try track 3: Cuan Ag Eirigh. (When I was a student, I played this track for my music theory teacher. After listening intently, he remarked that there where a lot of pianists who could learn about sound and rubato from this performance.)

Holmquist has since gone on to a career outside of music. So we may have to be satisfied with this all-too-brief example of his playing. This is a recording that should be heard by every aspiring young classical guitarist--it's a necessary corrective to the many current players who are better marksmen than musicians.

Don't let the low price fool you!!.......2001-05-24

This CD is a good place to start to discover the NAXOS label, which offers hundreds of top notch classical recordings for .... Hopefully, competition with recording companies such as NAXOS will eventually drive the price of all CDs down to a reasonable level. As for the CD itself, it's always a delight to listen to new music so beautifully played. And, because of the tremendous variety of styles of music represented in the 25 Esquisses (sketches), you can listen to this over and over again without tiring of it. The music for the 25 Esquisses is available from Mel Bay (...) which makes this CD even more attractive for the guitar player.
