Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!!.......2006-04-27

Such a terrific compilation of songs. Marc Dorsey's rendition of "People Make the World Go Round" gave me goosebumps! That's a good sign. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Crooklyn feeds the soul.......2005-06-12

This soudtrack means more to me than any other music compilation avaialable. Every song is carefully chosen to speak to the heart and mind of the listener and viewer of the Crooklyn film. It's a compilation of eclectic time-appropriate songs that portray the passion and atmosphere of the time period and culture it represents. The song "Oooh Child" has given me hope and encouragement through many of life's unexpected tragedies, and I appreciate every aspect of the music offered in this CD. I recommend it to anyone that enjoys a somewhat mellow yet passionate style of motown music. This CD is timeless.

4 out of 5 stars Pure rythmic soul.......1999-02-17

Motown at its finest. A collaboration of songs that make you tap your feet and smile. From Ooh Child to ABC, Crooklyn will make you stand up and cheer (even if your driving). So pop in the CD, and stretch out your neck, because there's gonna be a whole lot of bopping to these Motown greats.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Album Description

On New Tones home-made Detroit electronics and huge horn sections blast big band funk and riotous jazz. NOMO's roots are firmly planted in the fertile soil of African polyrhythm and American free jazz, and bandleader Elliot Bergman's tracks draw inspiration from cultures and generations wildly different than his home setting. In many ways (at least geographically and sonically) NOMO are a distant relative of the TRIBE collective. Undoubtedly they carry the spirit of the legendary Detroit-label's creative output.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-06-13

This album is simply amazing. Nomo delivers a group of funky instrumental tracks unlike anything else. You have to hear it to believe it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing.......2007-03-04

I've been listening to jazz and world music for almost four decades, i grew up on Coltrane and Miles and all of it... This group is simply unbelievalbe. Yes, it's very painful how unknown they are. It's been many years since i've been this excited about a new group/CD on the horizon. Fantatsic stuff, just check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Afrobeat Plus Much More............2006-12-01

This talented group of musicians has taken Afrobeat to next level. Combining elements of Soul, Funk and Avant-garde Jazz to create the most groovin' get your booty movin' sound around. With horn passages that are catchy and memorable throughout the album. Just pop this baby in and you're good to go.

5 out of 5 stars what more can you ask for.......2006-10-28

This jazzy afrobeat is easily one of the year's best albums. And unlike most afrobeat, the songs don't extend to 15 minutes so you never get bored. This is just a great listen from start to finish, whether it's in your headphones, on your computer at work or in your car. And they're also great live. Nomo is so overlooked, it's actually painful. I'm in pain right now. I have to go.

5 out of 5 stars Smokin' Afrobeat.......2006-05-31

This album is pure smokin' afrobeat. Just throw this disc in and party. Newtones captures the raw energy of their live shows and gives it to you in a convenient package that you can listen to whenever you want. It's my favorite cd right now.

Album Description

Thunder Chicken was an ole-time brand of "extra strong wine" that played a certain role in bandleader Malcolm "Papa Mali" Welbourne's formative years in north Louisiana. Fueled by Malcolm's slide guitar chops and chunk-o-funk vocals, and fortified by legendary drummer Barry "Frosty" Smith's monster drumming, Papa Mali's new batch of Thunder Chicken is every bit as potent as the original - and nastier than a lard bucket full of armpits!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Papa With A Brand New Bag.......2007-03-24

This Papa will definitely make you feel good. I didn't discover this release until a couple of years ago. it is still in regular rotation play. It has a veritable gumbo of Louisiana sounds from funk to blues to rock and more. One reviewer stated it nicely, like Dr. John on guitar with today's sound and groove. His label Fog City records states "Our recordings are diverse, but share a common thread: fat tones, good times and deep roots in regional American culture." That is also a great description of this disc. Check Mofro and Galactic Fog City releases if you haven't already too. Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez!

5 out of 5 stars food for the heart.......2005-10-10

Malcolm Welbourne is a true practitioner of spirited southern wetlands soul; he is as deeply rooted in the land of his origin as the baldcypress in red-eye swamp. This album is spicy gumbo for the mind and spirit; fans of Dr. John will find Papa Mali a comfortable bayou companion. Apart from this enlivening album, his work with Omar and the Howlers is just as magical and energizing.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as it is Live!.......2002-08-06

The CD was as good as when I heard PaPa live. Great music, can't beat that old bayou/blues sound.

5 out of 5 stars Great New Orleans Roots Rock.......2000-08-02

Truth to tell, I'd never heard of these guys before getting a mailing from Fog City Records. I'd liked other Fog City releases enough to give Papa Mali a listen. It's a keeper fo' sure.

Most New Orleans groups will give props to the elders, & Papa Mali is no exception. Great, funky covers of Clifton Chenier ("Bon Ton Roulet"), Dr. John ("Walk On Gilded Splinters") & The Wild Magnolias ("Fire Water"). The originals are up to the challenge as well. Perfect accompaniment for that Mardi Gras mood.

5 out of 5 stars BOMPALICIOUS!!!!!.......2007-02-28

i am gonna tell you this. i knew this would be good when i first bought it. when you have the meters, eddie bo, ernie k. doe (although he has done better than what is on here), and lee dorsey, it is sure to please. from the jump, i was moving. you do not get that often in a compilation of funky songs. one bomps here, one bomps there, and then you fall asleep because near the end, it wanes. this does not do that by any means, and i love it!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Life-changing.......2007-01-10

This is the best funk comp out there (believe me, I've had my share). I bought it on a hunch and I haven't been the same since. Absolutely essential.

"Whoo Lord I feel good! Whoo, it make feel so... uneccessary!" - Eddie Bo

5 out of 5 stars Like hotpants on an alligatooor!.......2005-11-08

This is one of the best funk compilations you can get. Trust me, I was born with the funk, I got the afro to prove it, goddamnit, and this is one funky mother! Standout tracks like Big Chief, Can I Be Your Squeeze, Hercules and Just Kissed My Baby are worth the CD alone. Get your wallet out, get juiced up and get down!

5 out of 5 stars go soul jazz!.......2005-04-24

Why it is a British record company, Soul Jazz, makes the best compilations of US regional funky music, I don't know, but bless them! Also check out the Nuyorica! compilations, if you can find them... And check out their website, lots of other great things I wish I owned.

5 out of 5 stars Great Overview.......2003-04-28

This is a terrific compilation album of several music anthems heard on the streets and in the clubs of the Crescent City. The only problem with this album is that a couple of the songs could have benefitted from their extended versions -- particularly "Handa Wanda" and especially "Big Chief". But I don't think you could fit more music on this disc, anyway. Easily one of the best collections of funk music ever made...

5 out of 5 stars Its a mans world, Cry baby, Stand by me, the Thrill is gone,.......2001-01-21

What can I say, every tune was fantastic. Brought back old memories of way back when. And just to have all of my favorites on one cd makes it even better. This is a must have for anyone who remember the true oldies but goodies. I play it on my way to work, when I'm on a long riding trip and at home when I just want to kick back and pull out old pictures of the way we were. Who could ever forget BB King singing the Thrill is gone, or James Brown really singing so we could understand him, crooning to Its a mans world.

5 out of 5 stars Great selection of soulful cuts........2000-06-25

I need to make sure there is no mistake: I do NOT get paid by Rhino Records. But, I rave over their efforts unceasingly, just as their ongoing distribution of old music goes on.

This is another brick in their wall. Twenty two cuts, and the majority are either great songs regularly heard (and recorded), or are hard to find classics.

It has been decades since I heard Betty Harris' "Cry To Me", which stands quite strong, thank you very much, alongside Soloman Burke's version. Of a hundred folks who remember The Rolling Stone's early hit "Time Is On My Side" I'd wager less than five ever heard Irma Thomas stomp on it her own self.

Lovers of classic soul music will find these treasures alone worth the purchase price. Add Jackie Wilson's "Doggin' Round", Otis, the Enchanters and Sam & Dave, and this is one helluva collection.

5 out of 5 stars A unique compilation of obscure Soul ballads from New Orleans........2007-01-06

God's Gift To Women's "Stop To Think It Over" is simply one of the most gorgeous and soulful ballads ever--said song easily justifies buying this great anthology of rare New Orleans Soul ballads. But don't overlook or underestimate the rare gems from such obscure artists and groups as Betty Harris, Earl King, The Herculoids, The Philharmonics and Diamond Joe as all are superb slices of gospel-infused Sweet Soul with a Southern twist. Excellent liner notes and discographical info courtesy of UK-based R&B authority John Ridley also.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Songs You Won't Get Elsewhere.......2007-07-10

Hurricanes aside, people rarely leave the New Orleans area voluntarily. That's true of the city's regular denizens but it's also been true, strangely enough, of their artists. Even the ones who rise to a national reputation generally keep their roots in the Crescent City, often to their commercial detriment. Think Irma Thomas or The Meters. The cost they paid in riches and fame, though, brought a corresponding benefit: It insulated them from the musical fads of their time, imprinting a regional sound on the music that set it apart, that keeps it fresh.

"Chess New Orleans" documents one such example of this New Orleans distinctiveness. The 44 songs on the collection were a small part of the huge boom in independent-label R&B recordings issued after World War II, but the artists recorded by Chess were not among the chart-topping stars who went national (such as Fats Domino on the early end to Little Richard at the tail). The musical approach in this collection is rooted in the Crescent City -- not the recordings of one band, but clearly the recordings of one musical community -- so it manages to avoid the piecemeal feeling of most compilations until you're well into CD#2. It's a rich testament to what happened when you applied the raw and rootsy Chess approach to recording Louisiana's regional artists.

Highlights include the original recordings of "See You Later Alligator" (popularized by Bill Haley) and "Jock-A-Mo/Iko Iko" (popularized by the Dixie Cups and a long-running feature of the Grateful Dead setlist), the still-popular "Mardi Gras Mambo" with Art Neville on vocals, and Clarence "Frogman" Henry's pop hits "Ain't Got No Home" and "(I Don't Know Why) But I Do." Personal favorites include "Down Boy" by Paul Gayten, "The Joke" by Reggie Hall, "Loud Mouth Annie" by Myles and Dupont, "Feeling My Way Around" by Earl King, and almost all the songs by the great Bobby Charles.

Final note: Remember that sound fidelity is going to be limited with independent recordings from this period. Otherwise, give this recording a try; I hope it gives you as much pleasure as it's given me.

3 out of 5 stars THREE AND A HALF STARS.......2007-01-05

THIS CD FEATURES MUSIC RECORDED ON THE CHICAGO BASED CHESS LABEL OF ARTISTS IN NEW ORLEANS IN THE EARLY 50'S. NOT A LOT OF WELL KNOWN STUFF HERE, I NEVER HEARD OF ANY OF THESE SONGS OUTSIDE OF CLARENCE FROGMAN HENRY'S "AIN'T GOT A HOME". MOSTLY UPBEAT R&B STUFF WITH A NEW ORLEANS FLAVOR, KIND OF LIKE EARLY FATS DOMINO AND OTHERS FROM THAT ERA. A LOT OF IT IS REALLY GOOD, BUT SOME OF THE SONGS ARE A BIT WEAK, SO I WILL GIVE THIS CD THREE AND A HALF STARS

4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Muiscal Rendition of the Psalms.......2004-04-19

To some extent, the title of this collection PSALMS FOR THE SOUL is a bit oxymoronic. The psalms that are set to music in this collection are from the Bible, and therefore all psalms from scripture would be psalms for the soul, so to speak. I would imagine that the person who came up with the title was trying to market the recording to a broader public than just those who would purchase a religious CD and thought it would be catchy. But I digress and should not poke fun of the people of Naxos who do a tremendous service to classical music lovers by providing a wide variety of music at affordable prices.

This collection contains musical settings of the psalms. Some of the settings are anthems from the Anglican tradition. Other settings are more liturgical stemming from the Benedictine monastic tradition. Some of the settings are contemporary, others traditional. The Choir of St. John's under the direction of Noel Edison and organist Michael Bloss, performs the pieces with both beauty and reverence.

This collection is relaxing. It makes wonderful background music while concentrating and could also be used as in prayerful reflective settings as well.
