Excelent CD.......2006-08-26
This CD has the best songs of PA.
I really enjoy this CD, even was not my time I had an uncle who showed me this singer when I had 10 yo.
The songs collection include some historical songs and shows society thougths by that time. As music lover and a person interested in the social movements in USA is a very interesting adquisition.
Worth Buying For Sure But...........2005-01-25
This package covers Paul's career from his days as supremely confident teenager through the hitless gap in the 60's, his welcome reemergence in the 70s and forward. I recommend it but have to deduct a star for not including "A Steel Guitar and A Glass of Wine", a 1962 song rightfully included on his "Best" compilations. One of several other songs could have been sacrificed to include that distinct one; otherwise, this is a good compilation.
Paul Anka's Greatest!.......2004-10-16
This is the kind of music they just don't make anymore. I wish they did. This is one of the best voices of all time people. Get this album NOW.
Enjoyable look back at this prolific singer/songwriter.......2004-04-15
One of the things that distinguished Paul Anka from the vast majority of his contemporaries was the fact that he wrote most of the songs he recorded. This was true both in his heyday in the late 1950's and early 1960's as well as during his improbable comeback in the 1970's. Paul Anka's "30th Anniversary
Collection" is truly a celebration of the man and his music. Anka's early recordings for ABC-Paramount truly captured the flavor of that era. Anyone who grew up during those years has a very special place in their hearts for such classics as "Put Your Head On My Shoulder", "Lonely Boy" and of course his 1957 summertime smash "Diana". His chart success continued pretty much uninterrupted until he departed ABC-Paramount late in 1961. Anka moved on to RCA records who had extremely high hopes for him. As often happens when artists switch labels, the move simply did not work out. Despite a couple of fairly big hits in 1962, Anka failed to distinguish himself for the remainder of the decade. A short stint at Buddah also proved unproductive.
Then in 1974, Anka re-emerged with a vengeance with an unlikely hit "You're Having My Baby". Much to everyones surprise, the tune became Anka's first number one song in 15 years. His new label, United Artists, promoted him heavily and Anka followed up with three more Top Ten tunes. Rhino has done a magnificent job in putting together a retrosepective of this very important artist. The disc includes 24 of his very best. Among my favorites are 1961's "Dance On Little Girl"
and his 1975 hit "Times of Your Life". You may recall that Kodak used this in it's commercials for quite some time. Also included is the extremely hard to find "The Teen Commandments",
a 1958 hit recorded with his ABC-Paramount labelmates George Hamilton IV and Johnny Nash. I was a bit disappointed that Rhino did not include Anka's final Top 40 hit from 1983 "Hold Me 'Til The Mornin' Comes". In conclusion, I was quite pleased with the remastering job and the 8 page booklet included in this package. I would be quite surprised if you can find a better collection of Anka's work anywhere else.
Great Collection!.......2004-02-20
This is by far the best single-disc greatest hits album of Paul Anka since it contains all of the major essentials duing his singing career. However, it is not a COMPLETE hit collection, but it's the closest thing you will find. The next logical step, unless Rhino already started, is a four or five CD box set covering all the hits, some rarities, some b-sides, some live recordings, and some unreleased material. Anka deserves box set treatment. The very least Rhino should do is make a collection of his ORIGINAL ABC-Paramount years of music (1957-1961) which is hard to find on CD. Does everyone agree?

Cornucopia of Pavarotti's works.......2007-03-01
This is a "Super hits" CD, with over forty different cuts (quite a few of which have appeared elsewhere, of course). For those who are aficionados of Pavarotti, this is what might be called "hog heaven."
Disc 1 features estimable works such as "Nessun dorma" (well done, with his voice showing to good effect), "Che gelida manina" (excellently done, with good characterization), ""Celeste Aida" (elegantly sung), "Di quella pira" (a much better than average version), "E lucevan le stelle" (Pavarotti does a nice job in the Puccini-Verdi repertoire), "La donna e mobile" (sung with aplomb), "Recondita armonia" (the other aria from Tosca, which also shows Pavarotti's voice off to good effect), and so on.
Disc 2 is especially interesting, because it features a more popular set of works, from the redoubtable "O sole mio" (richly orchestrated and nicely sung, not overpowered by Pavarotti's operatic voice), "Core n'grato" (compare with Caruso's version), "Oh, holy night," "La danza" (spritely sung with excellent breath control in a treacherous song), "Santa Lucia" (again, smoothly sung), "Ave Maria" (seemingly sung with respect and affection).
A cornucopia of Pavarottiana. For those fans of Pavarotti, this "greatest hits" collection will be welcome. For those who may not be aware of this tenor when his voice was still fresh, this is a fine entrée to his work.
Don't...!!!.......2005-01-24
To combine a voice as beautiful as Pavarotti's with some of the world's greatest music and outstanding orchestras, and end up with this...`thing'...is unforgivable. After buying and listening to it, it brought to mind those painful words "A fool, a fool. I saw a fool today. I saw him in the mirror."
R. J. Rogers
Great Tenor - Poor CD Quality.......2004-10-11
I have never been a huge fan of Maestro Pavarotti but I must admit that this compilation is a masterful collection of his operatic highlights.
I particularily enjoy the first disc which contains just about all the major tenor arias. The singing is superb and listening to this CD it becomes obvious what the fuss over the pre-3 Tenors Pavarotti was all about - the man really did have one of the greatest tenor voices of all time.
His diction was flawless, his line perfect and his interpretation in keeping with the greatest of the Italian tenors of days gone by.
The second disc is interesting in that it is a bit uneven. It contains a few neapolitan standards, a x-mas song, a duet with Frank Sinatra and some other random selections.
Overall this is a 5 star CD but due to the extremely low volume, particularily on the first and most important disc I can only give it a 4 star rating.
On a final note, anyone puzzeled by the current hype over the now againg and commercially over-blown Pavarotti should purchase this CD. This is the great tenor in his prime and as such a CD well worth having...even if you're not a Pavarotti fan.
I'm still not, but I recognize greatness when I hear it.
Great Music......Horrible Mastering.......2004-07-24
Pavarotti has a voice that can take hold of you and change your entire mood...even if you don't know Italian. The problem with this set is the mastering (mastering evens out the volumes and signal to noise ratio on an album). The first CD in this collection is so quiet that you literally have to crank your player to get any kind of volume. For a professional CD this is absolutely unacceptable.
The song choices are good with the exception of "My Way" with Frank Sinatra. Both singers sound ....ummm...let's just say less than their best on the recording. It sits out like a boil on a pretty girl's face.
Surely I am proud to be an Italian-American!!.......2004-06-26
With his wondrous soaring vocals and the humble demeanor within his strong body, Pavarotti is an inspiration to Italian- Americans everywhere - Italian-Americans like me. My family plays his beautiful operas on vinyl nearly every day in me Papa's little wine and cheese shop on 18th and Broadway. The customers compliment the music with glee, pinching my plump cheeks with merriment and wishing me well on their way out the door. Ah, how I love this land of America!!
Oops, I am sorry, Nana.
My Nana has shushed me to "pipe down, little bambino."
I must go down to the dark cellar to count our day's earnings, for it is almost night, and stern Papa will be back soon to close shop and make sure all is well.

Album Description
Sonically amazing, musically impeccable, vocally superb, this album swings hard from start to finish. Crank it loud on a great stereo. Crank it loud in your car with the windows open and the top down. This is fun music, this is music to drink cocktails to, this is a seriously fun album that seriously swings hard!
Beginning his career by entering amateur contests and sneaking into clubs, Paul Anka has gone on to become one of the most prolific, successful songwriters in history. This year marks his 47th Anniversary in show business, which he celebrates with the June 7th Global release of his latest album, "Rock Swings." It is a concept that takes rock hits from the 80's and adds a swing arrangement to give them a completely different, and fresh new sound. Songs like "Jump" by Van Halen, "Smells like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, "Wonderwall" by Oasis.

ROCKING, SWINGING & SOULFUL VOCALS~BRAVO PAUL!!!.......2007-07-09
Incredible that this Legendary Singer/Composer has been making spectactacular music for fifty years and in 2005 records a true Masterpiece that stands as one of his finest recorded works and never have Paul Anka vocals been finer or quite as mesmerizing and deeply soulful...Bravo Paul!!!
Opening with Bon Jovi's "It's My Life", Mr. Anka makes this song a personal athem all his own that takes the listener back through the years in a way that becomes a memorable trip back throught the great Sinatra years plus the big band era in an original yet updated way that is a totally great musical experience that ultimately becomes a personal slogan of life and survival...smooth as in a Neil Hefti kind of way, "True" is another personal trip back through time that is a deeply personal Anka statement that reflects years with greats such as Ella...these interpetations are so deeply personal that it is as if Anka composed every song in this masterful collection and I can only imagine this is because he is on of the great singer/songwriters from the past fifty years and a true original.
"Eye Of The Tiger' is cool, rhythmic, sophisicated and so totally hip plus quite a unique listening experience not to be missed by those who enjoy the true greats in sublime form as this magnificent performance hopefully won a Grammy Award and if it didn't, for shame!!!
For those who love to be hypnotized, then "Everybody Hurts" will become a regular addiction that will become a daily fix...this song is soul-deep and magnificent...by now you real music lovers must realize that this is a work that comes once in a lifetime and Mr. Anka is a truly incredible musical legend that must be a killer in concert and please Mr. Anka come to L.A.!!!
"Wonderwall" is programmed on T.V. Cable under "Singers & Standards" and was thankfully my introduction to this classic work and it just took one listen...a magical and engrossing song with a hot rhythm track and a stellar Anka performance that is one of his finest...and those great keyboards!!!! "Blackhole Sun" is another kicking big-band arrangement with a tremendous vocal that takes one away...a soulful arrangement and mesmerizing vocal make "It's A Sin" a true standout in this stellar collection of hypnotic and magical performances from a true master and this haunting ballad is an experience that will linger long after its over...get lost in these great songs as music doesn't get finer and is seldom like this!
"Jump" is definitive...plain and simple as this is hot and cooking and who would have ever imagine Paul peaking like he does here and this sounds so great and Paul is having a totally awesome time and in the end so do we!!!
Another great and surprising definitive masterful performance, how can one describe how great Mr. Anka is in his deeply soulful "Smells Like Teen Spirit" which compares to nothing...this is wild and awesone.
Lionel must marvel at how Paul goes so deep inside "Hello" and ultimately makes it his own...yikes does this guy have no mercy taking all these songs away from the originals...an emotional journey is where Paul takes "Eyes Without A Face"...smooth and sophisicated "Lovecats" is exotic and mesmerizing...blusey and intoxicating with "The Way You Make Me Feel", the finale "Tears In Heaven" will make a believer out of anyone with a feeling for those who can take us away with the magic of their voice and none is more magical than the voice of Mr. Paul Anka!!!
Thank you for all the years of the greatest in music both in singing and in composing...you are the ultimate in the world of music and please Mr. Anka keep it coming...you are one of the true masters and we love you!!!
Very Cool.......2007-01-10
I loved this CD. It's a really interesting concept. Famous pop and rock songs are remade in a swing-style. At first, the songs don't sound familiar, but then you start to notice that you know the words! Then you realize you are listening to a Bon Jovi or Michael Jackson song! It's really fun. Try popping it into the the CD player and not telling anyone about it, and see if they start to notice the songs' familiarity. Very cool!
Nice experiment, but it doesn't quite work.......2006-11-29
It's a fun experiment, taking a number of pop and rock hits and turn them into jazz songs. And the performances are very good, both by the band and by Paul Anka. But the problem is that most of the songs just don't work in this format. All songs are the exact same pace, and it does justice to very few of the songs.
The fact that the album is the same pace throughout makes it a bit dull after a while. It's background music. If you want to hear these songs, the original versions are better. If you want to hear jazz music, get a jazz album with jazz songs on it. 3 stars for production, singing and for an interesting idea. Unfortunately it didn't quite work out very well.
Paul Anka Rocks.......2006-11-03
As a long time Paul Anka fan and having seen him in concert this past summer, the DVD is excellent. It is very similar to the concert. I would recomment it to all Anka fans.
Impressive Regardless of the Concept.......2006-10-28
At first I was tickled by the idea of taking rock songs and turning them into big band swing compositions. But the more I listened, the more I realized two things: just how good some of these songs are regardless of music genre; and just how good Mr. Anka's instrument and these arrangements are.
The chord progressions in Black Hole Sun are simply beautiful. They all but remove the memory of the truly disturbing video that accompanied Soundgarden's recording, replacing it with warm tone colors and focusing in the meat of the song-- the lament of a man seeking a romantic love free from the storms that deluge far too many amors. The swing phrasing mixed with the post-modern, late-20th century poetry and melody demostrates the universality of this emotion. We all want the rain washed away, don't we?
Paul Anka's baritone is outstanding. The arrangements are lush and worthy of Nelson Riddle or Harry Connick's big band pieces.
This is a wonderful album. Give your ears a treat.

"Classic Hits" from Anka's 1973-1977 period.......2002-03-19
Paul Anka has had a phenomenal career, both as a singer/composer and as a sometime actor during his five plus decades in the entertainment industry. "Classic Hits" contains a sampling of this talented performer's remarkable career, with a majority of these classics recorded during his 1973-1977 tenure with United Artists. Four of the hits contained in this collection feature duets with Odia Coates, including the gospel-like "I Don't Like To Sleep Alone", as well as their number one smash "(You're) Having My Baby" and the smooth "One Man Woman/One Woman Man". "(I Believe) There's Nothing Stronger Than Our Love", another major hit for both Anka and Coates, is included here as well, as is one of Paul's most memorable and beloved hits, complete with a Frank Sinatra-like vocal performance with "Times Of Your Life". "My Best Friend's Wife", although somewhat overrepetitive, is still an enjoyable tune, nevertheless. "Anytime (I'll Be There)" has its melancholy moments, but fits in here with ease. Three "newer" renditions of familiar Anka classics are included here too - "My Way", which has been recorded by dozens of artists, including Sinatra and Elvis Presley. This version is brilliantly played out in grand Paul Anka fashion. The peppy "A Steel Guitar And A Glass Of Wine" and the downtrodden "Let Me Try Again" complete this stellar sample collection, courtesy of an international superstar that is Paul Anka. But, since "Classic Hits" is geared more toward the casual Anka fan, the Anka afficianado will find "30 Years Of Hits" more to their liking, as that compilation contains twice as many songs covering Anka's earlier (and later) period(s). "Classic Hits" is still an essential collection all the while, and thus belongs in any music fan's CD library. Make sure it's included in your purchases today, before it becomes a lost treasure!

EXCELLENT COMPILATION!!!.......2007-05-06
All of his 21 golden great songs!! certainly, all of them are re-made, but they are as great as the originals; the stereo effect is simply great, and all of the arrangements are very nice; I had this album first on vinyl, and the difference with the cd is logic; the cd is much better in qualify... Brillant songs like PUPPY LOVE, TIME TO CRY, DIANA, TONIGHT MY LOVE TONIGHT and LONELY BOY; the classics PUT YOUR HEAD ON MY SHOULDER, ADAN AND EVE, DON'T GAMBLE WITH LOVE, CINDERELLA and new songs like THE LONGEST DAY; one of the best cd's I've hear in my life.
Improved Versions.......2006-07-05
First of all I have to say that I am 34 years old, so I wasn't even born when the original hits by Paul Anka were released. However, after having listened to the two versions of most of the hits I definitely think that the re-recordings are improved versions over the originals. I think that Paul Anka's voice changed for the better in the new versions - although not many years had passed since he recorded the original versions. I think that Anka's voice in the old versions sounds immature, as if it needed a lot of improvement, and even makes me wonder how was it that some of them were big hits - and I am being serious!.
It is very rare that re-recordings can be considered improved versions over the originals (just listen to the terrible re-recordings by The Platters, Bobby Rydell, or Herman's Hermits), but this record is the proof that that is not always the case. Being a purist, however, I will always prefer the original versions over the re-recordings because no matter what imperfections they may have, those are the ones that people liked and made hits of at a specific time, for the simple reason that they were the only versions at the moment. I think that if we played the original versions and the re-recordings to a very young person who does even know who Paul Anka is and let them choose which version, which voice sounds better, chances are that they will prefer the re-recordings. Of course, if you lived in the 50's you will always prefer the originals, but that will always be like that. In conclusion, I think that both, the original versions and these re-recordings (from 1962) deserve a big applause, but for different reasons.
Not ABC-Paramount originals.......2006-02-10
With the exception of "The Longest Day", these are Paul's re-recordings of some of his 50's and early 60's ABC-Paramount material when he signed with RCA-Victor in 1962, moving away from his "teen idol" image. I was disappointed back in the 60's when I purchased the vinyl LP, thinking I was getting the originals. Rhino's "30th Anniversary Collection" covers the essential ABC-Paramount, RCA Victor, Buddah and UA hits. The Japanese 2-CD import "ABC-Paramount Original Classics" has an excellent selection from the early "Big 15" years, but I don't know if it is still in print.
21 FAKE HITS.......2004-07-09
I didn't believe my ears when I heard this CD. These are FAKE- REMAKE items. Who need this for heaven sake?
WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!.......2004-06-03
I BORROWED THIS ALBUM FROM MY FRIEND WHEN WE MOVED TO KAUAI IN 1965 WHEN I WAS 15 AND I DROVE MY PARENTS CRAZY PLAYING IT AND FINALLY HAD TO RETURN IT TO MY FRIEND...WHEN I SAW IT WAS ON CD FORMAT I WAS VERY EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO HEAR THE SAME SONGS AFTER ALMOST 40 YEARS. LET ME TELL YOU IT IS SO FAR FROM THE ORIGINAL ALBUM I WANT TO CRY. HE CANT EVEN MAKE SOME OF THE HIGH NOTES AND IF HE WERE ON AMERICAN IDOL WITH THE STYLE AND VOICE THAT IS ON THIS CD SIMON AND THE OTHERS WOULD GET HIM OFF PRONTO. SORRY, BUT DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS DUD.

USMA Glee Club scores a real hit.......2006-11-14
This album is awe-inspiring. I bought the album after hearing an out take from "Men of Freedom", the tune is from an old Welsh battle song. You will recognize the tune if you saw Zulu Dawn with Michael Caine. Many of the other songs are equally powerful and mesmerizing. The only songs I didn't like were when the Glee club used guest soloists. They were less impressive and, in my opinion, took away from the strength of the group.
I liked the multiple verses sung from America, I wished they would have given the Star Spangled Banner the same treatment. The Mansions of the Lord is powerful and supremely reverent, as is Rise Up. I would dearly like to hear more from this talented group of soldiers.
Reverent, Full of Love.......2006-09-26
When I saw and heard this music broadcast Veteran's Day on TBN and my friends serving in our Armed Forces in Iraq saw it broadcast on Armed Forces Network, I was so happy to find the stereo CD and companion Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound DVD on Amazon. I cannot stop listening to it! The 60 minute musical program, reminiscent of the great concept albums of years ago, is one of the most reverent, intelligent and passionate portrayals of America's character ever produced. It contains many styles of choral music - all superbly performed by the world famous Cadet Glee Club of West Point arrayed in breathtaking formation on the altar of the massive 100 year old Cadet Chapel. There are richly textured vocal a capella songs such as "Rise Up O Men of God", "Manisons of the Lord", one of the most popular new hymns written, and "America (My Country `Tis of Thee)". Your buttons will burst with pride when you hear the brand new song "Men of Freedom" introduced by a single Cadet then followed by a cascade of additional voices building to a unified and thunderous declaration of defiant freedom in a style reminiscent of the great Welsh Male Choirs. Four songs highlight the power and majesty of the largest church organ in the world. You'll have to fight the urge to stand at attention when you hear and feel its power kick in on "Lest We Forget", "On Great Lone Hills", "Jerusalem" and "This Christmastide". The musical variety is further enhanced by the addition of brass and percussion for the rousing marches, "The Longest Day" and "Non Nobis". When was the last time you heard these two songs - one by world famous singer, songwriter and teen idol, Paul Anka and the other a medieval celebration of thanksgiving sung in Latin! The rich background vocals of the Cadet Glee Club musically frame two songs that underpin the message of this album - Bravery and Sacrifice. "Into the Fire" by NYPD's Daniel Rodriguez made me want to immediately rise up and rush to anyone's aid and when he holds that note at the end - wow! Tony Award Winner Lea Salonga's performance of the classic Christian hit, "Via Dolorosa", (one of the top 50 Christian songs of all time), is "The Passion of the Christ" embodied in a 5 minute song. You will alternate between tears and goose bumps. Her performance of the Spanish stanza will overwhelm you. Finally, Irish song writing master, Phil Coulter's wistful "Take Me Home" is accompanied by beautiful piano and guitar and introduced by a new poem entitled "I Am A Soldier" that is sobering reminder of the oath our soldiers swear to and the actions they are bound to take. God bless them!
A great bonus of the CD and DVD is that they both include a stylish lyric booklet as well as commentary by the producer on why he chose each song.
On the back cover of the CD and DVD cases is the statement that this production was created to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces, past and present, and the great values of America that they defend. This it surely does!! Also, it states that the producer is contributing a portion of his wholesale proceeds from its sale to organizations assisting our wounded soldiers. Bravo, Mr. Coppi.
Good CD.......2006-07-19
Wonderful songs and wonderful renditions of the songs. I must say, though, that the numbers would have been better if they were performed with more "ooomph" (for instance, "The Star Spangled Banner" could have been sung with more power and the arrangement could have used more creativity). The wisest decision on this CD was the inclusion of the numbers from Ms. Lea Salonga (whose hauntingly beautiful voice is able to effectively draw listeners in) and Daniel Rodriguez, one of America's newest tenors. Overall a good CD.
A real disappointment..........2006-06-10
I was so excited to stumble upon this album when a local music store was going out of business and selling CD's at great discounts. I love Glee Club music, I love patriotic music, and I love cathedral/chapel accoustics. Unfortunately, this album did not live up to its billing.
My primary complaints with this recording are twofold: the overuse of unison singing and the unnecessary inclusion of guest soloists. The beauty of glee club music is the rich chords, which are thankfully heard in many songs. To my dismay, though, there are many songs that mostly or entirely omit the beautiful harmonies that make glee clubs great.
As for the guest soloists, I don't understand why a singing group which obviously has many wonderful voices would bring in outsiders for an album like this. Actually, I do know why they would do it, and it's obviously a marketing thing that has financial implications. As reasonable as this may seem, it just cheapens the experience for me. Another great feature of glee clubs (and college choirs more generally) is the lack of polished, perfect, professional singers. There is something raw, authentic, and refreshing about a bunch of college kids singing together. Why bring in random people with no particular connection to the group?
To be fair, "Rise Up, O Men of God" and "Mansions of the Lord" are fantastic. I'll continue to play this album to listen to those songs. However, much of the remainder is somewhat forgettable.

New York Memories.......2007-05-19
I enjoy André Rieu DVD Concerts very much. His New York concert was good, but I found it a bit ironic. He said that he enjoyed palying American music and yet a large part of the Broadway music he played was composed by a British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. I was expecting to hear Irwin Berlin, Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, Copland, or even the Beach Boys. What happened? I miss the performances of Carmen Monarca and the other Sopranos. The The Harlem Gospel Choir was good, but seemed out of place with what André usually plays. I was hoping to hear a tribute to the heroes of 9/11, but did not. Basically in did not match up to his others such as Tuscany.
Love It!!.......2007-05-15
Wonderful CD. I love all Andre's music and think that he can play any style perfectly. The violin solos are magical, his soloists are at the top of their form and the orchestra is once again magnificent. It's a very varied CD which makes it easy to listen to it again and again. And I do!! Would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Andre's music or who just enjoys quality orchestral music in general.
Andre Rieu.......2007-03-16
I would have liked a little more Broadway in this CD, but it's wonderful to listen to and the Harlem Gospel Choir rocks me down the freeway on my way home from work.

Sonic abomination.......2005-10-07
Here it is.
The horror.
The sonic abomination.
The hell spawn that was released by Anka onto AM radio in 1974 and makes us envy the deaf today.
Yes, I am speaking of Paul Anka & Odia Coates duet "(You're) Having My Baby."
Upon Anka's release of this atrocity, William Shatner need never fear again that his "Mr. Tambourine Man" cover will go down in history as the world's worst song.
Despite his other achievements, Anka buried his credibility with this repulsive treacle. Even Frank Sinatra's "Mama Will Bark" has a redeeming note in it, unbearably absent from Anka's sonic turd. It manages to combine the worst features of Captain & Tennille's "Muskrat Love" and the base carnality of any song by Mr. Meat Loaf.
Perhaps George Orwell's prophetic "memory holes" cannot arrive soon enough. Would that we had them now and could confine every copy of this album to the flames, and had the cheap gin to wash the memory of ever hearing it from our damaged grey sludge.
The REAL Reason For This CD!.......2004-02-20
I've read previous reviewers and agree with them. Obviously, Paul Anka has a lot more than 12 hits during his singing career so this is NOT ideal for the Anka fan who would take this collection as an affront.
This is why the CD was made: It was intended for the CASUAL music fan that only wants ONE CD of Paul Anka. That's it! It does have the major highlights from his earlier years to his most recent.
This is one of many reasons why most artists have multiple collections of "Greatest Hits" albums. They play around the song list changing one song and adding another song to another collection. They realize too that they want to make a collection for Anka fans, middle-of-the-road fans, and casual fans. They claim that the songs are originals or that they are re-mastered originals, or re-mastered re-recordings of the originals.....Sound confusing? Yes it is!
Paul Anka Gold.......2003-04-27
What I want to know is does anyone know of a CD collection that contains Paul's original ABC hits from 1957-61? There used to be a label called Sire which had such a collection but unless one can find it as vinyl in some used record store, its unavailable. Its a shame, because the CD thats on my left, the "21 golden hits" version on RCA are all remakes, which sound terrible. Even Paul, I've read, regretted making it.
Curb--as always, the Worst Reissue Label In The Universe.......2002-10-08
In which the record company implies that the artist has only turned out 12 songs worth compiling in five decades. Does this disc even run longer than 30 minutes? The dumbness within the dumbness is that these songs actually span about 30 years. Which according to most number systems is kinda not five decades.
If you're this interested, go for Rhino's 30th Anniversary Collection. For five bucks more, you get 24 hits instead of the 12 Curb parcels out. All but the last three tracks here are there as well. Frustratingly, Curb manages to include one key hit (to these ears, anyway) not on the Rhino set--"Hold Me Til The Morning Comes" is a great ballad (to these ears, anyway) featuring Peter Cetera on backing vocals. It nicked the Top 40 (peaking at #40) in 1983, making Anka one of the few artists to hit in the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's. Its presence here justifies, unfortunately, the existence of this skimpy thing.
Where are the rest?.......2002-06-29
For the most part, I am pleased with this compilation. Paul Anka has one of the most distinctive voices in pop music and his popularity has stood the test of time. Each major hit on this CD is a piece of pop music history. So, why do I only give this CD three stars. I find it hard to believe that a man of Mr. Anka's distinction can not get a more comprehensive CD to showcase his talents and the musical changes he went through during the span of his career. This CD says FIVE DECADES. So, where are the rest of the songs? This CD is missing major Anka tunes from his Columbia, RCA and Buddha years. His ABC-Paramount years are covered fairly well with his major hits. The United Artists years are also well represented, although this CD should have included "Happier" and "Closing Doors" from his standout LP "The Painter" (why that LP is not available on CD boggles my mind. It is perhaps his best next to "Feelings" which is on CD and does contain as a bonus track, "Happier." But nowhere can you get the best track on that LP - "Closing Doors.") His Buddha years are totally ignored on this set and his major hit "Jubilation" during those Buddha years is an obvious missing track in my eyes. Columbia songs such as "Second Chance" with Michael McDonald is also missing. "Love Makes The World Go Round" during the RCA years is not here. I could on and on and I'm sure others have favorites which are not included in this compilation. That is my point - a man of Mr Anka's caliber deserves a better, more rounded salute to his career and FIVE DECADES should have included more songs from each decade. One major plus with this set is the inclusion of the moving and emotional Anka tune "Freedom For the World." All shortcomings of this CD aside, that one song is worth the price of this CD and, as for as I know, is the only CD on which this favorite Anka song of mine is included. So, go ahead and buy this CD in hopes that someone will soon decide to give Mr. Anka a better CD package.

Album Description
Classic Songs, My Way: The new album features lush treatments of songs by Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, and Bryan Adams, a swinging take on the Killers' "Mr. Brightside" and surprising new renditions of two classics from Paul's own formidable canon. The recipient of valuable support from Anka earlier in his career, Michael Buble returns the favour by joining his swing mentor on his 1958 Top 10 hit "You Are My Destiny" - the remarkable new version replaces the original's teenage ardour with a temperament that's older and wiser. For the album's grand finale, Mr Anka performs a soaring performance of "My Way," which Paul famously turned from a little-known French song into a perennial showstopper for his late friend Frank Sinatra.
Classic Songs, My Way encapsulates nearly every era of hit-making for Anka. Never one to rest on his laurels, he has had a song on Billboard's charts in every decade since 1957, when the Ottawa-born Anka was only 17. Since then, he's recorded over 120 albums in a wide variety of languages, selling close to 15 million albums worldwide and landing three No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 - "Diana," "Lonely Boy" and "(You're) Having My Baby." (The first of those hits reportedly sold 10 million copies worldwide - only "White Christmas" topped it.)

Customer Reviews:
Harp for meat lovers........2007-04-26
This is a weighty and meritorious collection of orchestral works featuring harp. As someone who has always loved harp, a begginning harpist, looking for a broad base of serious harp music this is essential listening for me.
This collection is transporting. Styles and preferences come and go in the classical music world and the world of record production, but this collection is solidly timeless. A great overview, resource, and tremendous listening pleasure.
A full 145 minutes of wonderful harp and orchestral music.......2005-10-16
I certainly realize that this is an older recording but this is also an absolutely wonderful collection of some outstanding works for the harp played by Nicanor Zabaleta. There are 8 composers represented, each with an outstanding composition for harp and orchestra. I have never tired of listening to this CD over the last 20 years, it is rich and varied.
Georg Friedrich Haendel's Concerto pour harpe et orchestre en si bemol majeur, op. 4 no. 6 has been a favorite of mine for over 20 years. It immediately transports me into a state of serenity. It is utterly beautiful with the wonderful support for the harp with the string instruments of the orchestra. The movements remain light, floating, and flowing.
Johann Georg Albrechtberger's Concerto pour harpe et orchestre en ut majeur is a perfect piece to follow the Handel piece since it has more integration of the orchestra into the piece but the harp holds its own amongst the orchestral textures. The influence of Handel seems evident, but this is not meant as a negative comment. On the contrary, the for six movements of this CD moving from Handel to Albrechtsberger is seemless.
Karl Ditters Von Dittersdorf's Concerto pour harpe et orchestre en la majeur has a Mozart sound with flowing harp scales supported by the orchestra. The piece ends with Rondeau: Allegretto that is upbeat energetic and fun. This is a great movement to have in the very center of the CD side 1 to keep the guest awake at your next party.
Maurice Ravel's Introduction et Allegro pour harpe, guatour a cordes, flute et clarinette is very different from the three composers that preceed him on the CD. They are baroque, full of flourish and fun. When we hear Ravel, the mood changes to lush romance.
Claude Debussy's Danses pour harpe et orchester a cordes is less lush and moody romantic like the Ravel piece that preceeds it. However the first movement, Danse scree, is somewhat minimal and almost experimental in its lack of flourishes. In the second movement, Danse profane, I thought of Aaron Copeland compositions for the ballet.
Mozart's Concerto pour flute, harpe et orchestre en ut majeur, K. 299 is well done with Karlheinz Zoeller on the flute in all movements. The second movement, Andantino, is sublime. The third movement, Rondeau Allegro takes off like a rocket, with the harp and flute taking turns in center stage.
Francois-Adrien Boteldieu's Concerto pour harpe et orchestre en ut majeur offers the most pensive piece on the CDs in the second movement Audante-Lento-Allaca. Reverent and well constructed, the piece is only a bit melancholy.
Joaquim Rodrigo's Concerto-Serenade pour harpe et orchestre is upbeat and fun in the first and third movements and pensive in the second, with wonderful compliments between the harp and woodwind instruments.
This is an amazing collection of music, 8 composers are included, and the range of works is impressive and enjoyable. I would strongly recommend this CD.
Classic Performances, aging but still good sound.......2001-06-23
Nicano Zabaleta was perhaps the first of the superstar virtuoso harpists of the stereo era and his recordings remain touchstones of unhurried virtuosity coupled with elegant musicianship. These performances are beginning to show their age a bit in sound, but the performances are luminous. The Boieldieu Concerto is seldom encountered in concert, but what a lovely, melodic and enchanting work. Today, Marielle Nordman and Marisa Robles both have very fine recordings of the concerto, but Zabaleta's is still worthy, and in this package, quite a bargain. The Albrechtsberger concerto is equally unfamiliar to many listeners and also a charmer, and the performance of the Handel concerto offered in a warm style that may seem a bit old fashioned by today's Original Instrument crowd, but it is highly persuasive. The Debussy and Ravel pieces are given appealing performances, again somewhat large scale compared to some of the chamber performances in the catalog, but brilliantly played.
The only weak link is the Mozart concerto, and weak only because there are so many good performances of the piece now available. I find the performance a bit stiff, but given the other recordings in this set and the low price, it's still a definite find for anyone who loves music for harp and orchestra.
