Innovative and engaging, Zion I's Mind over Matter succeeds because of its impressive conceptual execution. The Bay Area trio of Zion, Amp Live, and DJ K-Genius set the tone with the old-school energy of "Revolution (B-boy Anthem)," reawakening hip-hop's subversive impulses. Spiritual--not economic--uplift is the focus of this album, and Zion's meditative lyrics deconstruct materialist craving ("Venus") and deliver stream-of-consciousness musing ("How Many"). Zion I avoid being overly earnest, tossing in no-frills bangers ("Critical" with Planet Asia), and also tastefully embrace drum & bass on the previously released single "Inner Light" and the soothing instrumental "Metropolis." This versatile and progressive musical ambience, courtesy of the knob-twiddling of 418Hz Productions, mirrors their lyrical tone, serving up a nourishing blend of beats and rhymes. --Del. F. Cowie

5 out of 5 stars Seriously On Point!.......2007-04-16

This creative project is lyrically rich, musically diverse and socially conscious. Lyrics complex but comprehendable. This is definately a timeless project that will last test of time. Hopefully, the reality of the lyrics won't be long lasting but Zion I's reflection is quite vivid and clear. They are taking RAP to another level and I definately will purchase more of their lyrical gifts, True & Livin is my next but Street Legends is their most recent (2007), eventually I will get them all. This is message music.

5 out of 5 stars Mind Over Matter.......2006-10-05

Hip Hop fans of all sorts will appreciate this upon its first listen. Believe all the five star reviews that its receiving. Its by far one of the illest LP's you'll discover and play over and over again. Production=A+.....Lyrics=A++

5 out of 5 stars this isnt oil, prices are way too high.......2006-09-04

this album is amazing, if you want this album go to zion is website (search for it) and its only 12 dollars! i love amazon but 40 dollars is absolutely rediculous. and yes this album might actually be worth 40 dollars however zion i have it on their website for 12 so drop by over there and stop these people from trying to make an all to easy dollar.

5 out of 5 stars Sickest album.....EVER!!!!.......2006-03-02

Straight up this is the illest album ive ever heard...no bullsh*t filler tracks, NOTHING. Actually its more than just a sick album, its the beginning of a new generation of hip-hop, for real any fan of "underground" hip-hop or an upcoming MC must cop this album. Its beat that most people wont ever hear this gem. Anyway, all this has already been said, just puttin in my word to advise anyone thinking about getting it to stop waiting and BUY IT. Best spent 15 bills of my life.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album, (but these prices are nuts!).......2005-09-16

This album is an amazing combination of electronica and hip hop. Amp Live is an amazing and original producer, and Zion keeps it clean and thoughtful. I saw them live and it was the best show I have ever attended. Their new CD, True and Livin', is more mainstream, but equally amazing. It has guest appearances from Del, Talib Kweli, Aesop Rock, and Blackalicious. How did they get so many great rappers on their album? With an amazing, original sound, and Mind Over Matter is where they first burst onto the scene. Don't spend too much on it though, most of these sellers are crazy.

Robert Klein has not received the recognition he deserves, but at least Jerry Seinfeld has cited him as a one of his influences. Many of his routines are of their time, but they still are still funny and I think they have aged better than most of his peer's material (especially Woody Allen's albums). Although I've seen many skits based on "The Final Record Offer", Klein's performance is still the best. "In Praise Of The Harmonica" has one of the most creative uses of the harmonica ever recorded.

5 out of 5 stars World's Funniest Record Of All time.......2003-11-20

Please excuse the hyperbole - but this series of Klein's comedic writing is, to my taste, the funniest stuff ever conceived. 'Juergen's Myasthenia', '100% undetectable hairpiece', 'Ever Record Ever Recorded' EVERY BIT on the album 'The None News News' - EVERYTHING IS ABSOLUTELY CLASSIC! I laugh every time I hear this work. Robert Klein has more wacky, kooky, zany, stuff crammed into this album than ANY other comedian... EVER... on any other album. THIS IS TRULY WHAT HUMOR IS ALL ABOUT... Sorry for the shouting - but I'll never hear anything else as funny, as long as I live. God bless Robert Klein - he is the greatest of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Yeah it is moldy, but still funny........2001-05-05

He is one of the best stand-ups of all time. If you lived his bits they are probably a lot funnier. But the National Anthem, First Time Stoned & Final Record Offer still are relevant. Watergate was & still is Hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars As Jackie Mason would say we say - "...the BEST!!!".......2001-02-16

Robert Klein is the best in stand up comedy. I have fond memories of memorizing his stuff as a kid. In eighth grade I had to recite a poem and chose Mind Over Matter because it WAS me. He's the forerunner of Seinfeld, the master of the craft who never got his due credit. If you haven't heard him yet get all four albums in the order they came out. This comes first. You can catch him at the Gotham in Manhattan on Wednesdays. He's had an illustrious career that as he recently put it has taken him "from Broadway to the White house to ...a dump in New Jersey." If you have any appreciation for stand up then get all the stuff you can of my inspiration Robert Klein.

10 stars. This is such a great CD. Obviously, Shim is not an imitator of Joe Henderson, and has his own voice. The CD also exhibits his exceptional compositional skills. Since this CD was issued, he dissapeared. I wonder what he is doing now. Mark, please come back! The Jazz world needs you for its progress! Mark Turner and Joshua Redman do not please me! 1 out of 5 stars Those who can't, teach........2005-04-03

George Bellas is one of the most technically scary guitarists I've ever heard. However, he can't do crap with that skill. This whole CD is boring, tasteless, monotonous, and just plain bad. And to mister "if you don't like this, you must not be a musician, blah blah blah", I am a guitarist, I do "get" what he's doing, but I also understand that there is more to music than just insane chops. I'd rather listen to a "simple" guitarist like Roine Stolt, who can actually get something interesting out of his instrument, instead of just cramming his skills down the listener's throat. If all you're looking for is impossible sweep-picking patterns in weird time signatures, then you're totally missing the point of what music's all about.

This guy should just be a guitar teacher, and stop trying to make music of his own. Music is an artform, not a competitive sport, and this guy just doesn't cut it.

(Oh, and go listen to Pat Metheny if you want to hear sick chops AND songwriting talent.)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Neo-Classical Playing!.......2003-11-23

I want to start off by saying that George Bellas is one of the most highly skilled guitarists I have ever heard. I really like this CD and I think that his Neo-Classical compositions are very inspiring and creative. It seems that some other listeners don't agree with me. The reviews on this CD so far mostly say "all he does is shred," "it's nothing new," "he's an Yngwie clone," and "his music is boring." Clearly you must not play music or even know very much about it. First of all unless you are already a shred fan, this CD is not for you if you are not a musician yourself!! Obviously it's going to be boring to someone who can't appreciate the kind of skill necessary to execute the songs on this CD. He is certainly not an Yngwie clone. They are obviously in the same genre, but a clone? Bellas' style is very different from Yngwie's but I guess some people don't have the ear for this kind of high level virtuoso playing. Obviously it's not going to be anything new because the guitar as an instrument is not changing, therefore what is difficult to play on the guitar will not change. He is playing some extremely difficult pieces and that's really the whole point to this CD: to astound and impress the listener. He's not trying to make a musical statement here; not to mention you really can't go further beyond what's already been done on the guitar. So keep listening to your new wave and pretending to be innovative. Once and for all, obviously what he is going to do is shred, that's the genre of the CD. But clearly there is also feeling underneath what he is playing and he makes it very clear at some parts. I was also happy to find a variety of musical instruments playing instead of just the standard bass, drums, and guitar and I believe he gets fairly innovative at several points. I think fans of Jason Becker/Cacophony, Vitalij Kuprij, Yngwie Malmsteen (obviously), and Tony Macalpine will really enjoy this CD. So really what it comes down to is this: do you like incredibly fast guitar that you didn't think a human was capable of executing? Do you like extremely complex and tasteful melodies? Then this CD is for you! If you think that best guitar players that ever lived were Jimi Hendrix and Dave Mathews then you might want to skip this one.

2 out of 5 stars Technical, yet uninspiring.......2003-05-27

George Bellas has great technique, there's no denying that one. Unfortunately, his music is extremely boring. All of his solos are shred, and many sound the same. The "Orchestral Suite" is one of the most monotonous songs I've ever heard. I can't take 2 minutes of it. I don't care what anyone else says, he is a Malmsteen clone. I'll agree with another reviewer that it takes a tremendous amount of time to become as technically proficient as Bellas is. But, there are a lot of guys that can do what he can do. The difference is in the ability to play with feeling and purpose. Honestly, I would rather listen to Yngwie. If you like shred that never ends and makes little musical sense, this is for you. If you want to hear a neoclassical-type album where the guitar player has pure feeling and attitude, check out Greg Howe on Vatlij Kuprij's album, High Definition.

1 out of 5 stars Heard it all before.......2003-03-31

There is nothing original about this guitarist. Speed picking, sweeping arpeggios and pivoting is something that was done by plenty of neo-classical guitarists from the Eighties.
So if you're looking for something new, I'm afraid it isn't here.

3 out of 5 stars Proficient skills.......2003-02-13

Hey ! This man definitely can play ! But that's not always enough. Though I love the excellent technique, I don't get too much excited about ingenuity of the cuts and finesse of compositions, the two of which are just missing. And finally, the last piece called "Orchestral Suite": geee, I have never heard anything more boring on the guitar ! Too long, too baroque-like, over-repetitive & generally tiresome ! Omit this one and the record deserves 3,5 stars ! Anyway it seems like a good "lecture" to those guitar [guys] who practise.

By far the best and most revolutionary band from long island, ny...

5 out of 5 stars The story of how everything came down.......2005-03-21

Before Refused, The Mars Volta and Muse reintroduced the world to progressive rock records there was Mind Over Matter's "Automanipulation".
The siren song from this Long Island Quintet is their finest recording and one of the best offerings from the East coast HC scene. The album is a true progression from 1994's "Security" where the band showcased their ability to play traditional east coast styled HC. Where Quicksand and Burn exemplifeid that style of HC, "Automanipulation" tapped into the true potential of the genre and gave us our first true glimpse of the shape of punk to come.
George's stellar vocals and John's expert drumming served to create textured landscapes for the listener at a time when HC was still more about the message than the sound. The album's opening track "virus" curves and winds its way through several minutes of crashing, almost anthemic verses, then gives way to a barely audible breakdown and George's warning that there is a virus among us. How right he was.
This was to be Mind Over Matter's final recording. John was already the drummer for NY hatecore heroes Neglect and George moved on to work with members of Quicksand in World's Fastest Car (I think that was their name, they only played 6 or 7 shows) as well as front the band "Day in the Life".
If you enjoyed "The Shape of Punk to Come" by Refused or even Snapcase's "End Transmission" pick this up. Also look for Neglect's "Four years of hate" double disc for more of John's work.
