Very nice introduction to the work of a great soprano.......2007-07-13

This 2 CD set is a terrific introduction to the body of work of Victoria de los Angeles. As the "liner notes" point out: "She was an artist who brought individuality and a sense of joy to everything she performed. . . ." And this is not hyperbole. She was a top soprano in the middle part of the twentieth century.

Some cuts exemplify her art:

"Un bel di" is a ravishing version of this well known aria. She demonstrates a rich voice with fine musicality. This is a ravishing version of this aria. The singer displays good vocal control. There are nice transitions across the registers.

"Si, mi chiamano Mimi" is another well known work for sopranos. Again, nicely done. She appears (to me anyhow) to catch the spirit of Mimi very nicely indeed.

From "La Traviata," she essays "E strano. . .Sempre Libera." This is an affecting version. She does not have the coloratura armamentarium that some have brought to bear on this aria, but she does a fine job nonetheless. She seems to capture the desperate spirit of Violetta in "Sempre Libera."

Rossini's "Una voce poco fa" is a nice tour de force for sopranos. De los Angeles does a nice job here. This is a work from the Bel canto repertoire, but she does well. She shows vocal agility and captures the spirit of the work. This is an affecting, charming version. There is some occasional vocal harshness, but not a serious issue.

From "Carmen," "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle." Richly and nicely sung.

Her range on this CD is worth noting: from Puccini and Verdi to Wagner to Rossini to Gounod.

And then another of her specialties--songs. She does a nice turn with the Spanish song "Malaguena." Then, in a nice twist, she accompanies herself on guitar in "Adios Granada." I'm not normally so excited about songs, but in this case I found her work enchanting.

So, if you want to get a sense of the artistry of Victoria de los Angeles, this is an excellent starting point. Highly recommended!

The very best performance by Victoria de los Angeles.......2006-09-13

Is the recording on Allegro records of her performance of Madame Butterfly in New Orleans in 1954, not the Rome recording. She is simply radiant, perfect, a voice truly that is a victory for the angels. Unbelievably marvelous.

In Memoriam: A Tribute To The Late Victoria.......2005-02-01

Victoria De Los Angeles died Saturday of heart failure at the age of 83 in Barcelona, Spain. The world of opera mourns her loss. She was a gifted soprano and a wonderful human being. On stage, she was able to directly speak to her audience and communicate with them in a very special and rare way that is not always seen today. She never hid herself behind a facade nor distanced herself from fans and audiences. She was born to sing opera. It was in her blood. This album showcases De Los Angeles in her most memorable and successful roles. Victoria De Los Angeles was one of the first singers from Spain to win worldwide acclaim. Others would follow- Placido Domingo and Montserrat Caballe. De Los Angeles is showcased in this album which may also serve as a tribute to the now late soprano.

Her voice was essentially full lyric with some spinto. Hearing her renditions of "O Mio Babbini Caro"- a signature soprano role, as well as "Ebben Ne Andro Lontana" from La Wally and her performances as Mimi, one is clearly treated to the truest form of a pure lyric soprano. Her voice is spunned gold, with sweet, warm, feminine textures. Her reperotire remained in the Italian and French. Of course, being Spanish, she was a leading singer in Spanish Lieder and romantic ballads. Her Art Songs in Spanish are full of elegance and grace. A champion of obscure composers, she sang and recorded recitals that featured the works of lesser known composers, though strictly Lieder and Folk/Art Song.

Victoria De Los Angeles is fortunately a well-documented artist. Some film footage exist of her performances. I seem to recall that there exists a taped performance of her Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata. She excelled in the lyric roles of Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme, Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. Her Madame Butterfly is a pure lyric rendition, with less of the dramatic intensity other singers have given the role- i.e. Leontine Price, Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, etc. But her Butterfly is actually the way the role ought to be sung. It's a voice of grace, naivete and above all romance that must colorize Butterfly. The dramatic intensity only makes her sound older and madly passionate. She is only a fifteen year old girl who has been deceived and betrayed. She must remain youthful sounding. De Los Angeles does justice to the truest form of Butterfly. She was thrilling in French and Italian operas and her Spanish songs were briliant and beautiful.

Victoria will always be remembered. She was a unique and talented artist of the lyric repertoire. Her pure, lovely voice was like an angel's. There will never be another Victoria De Los Angeles. With her death, the end of an era also passes. In particular, I will always remember one reported incident. She was about to make her first recital in America but she had no accompanist- pianist/guitarist etc. When asked how she would handle this, she remarked: "Well I brought my guitar with me". And she proceeded to accompany herself with the guitar.

De los Angeles' ability to sing with elegance and style has rarely been equalled and never been surpassed. She's the greatest Charlotte in "Werther", the most tender Santuzza in "Cavalleria Rusticana" and the most sumptuos Nedda in "I Pagliacci". Her Lieder-Recordings are legendary, my favourites are the Spanish ones of course. What a piano-culture and what a velvet sound! Get this set, it's cheap and it has GREAT singing!

A shallow & unremarkable voice.......2006-07-12

Echoing an earlier reviewer, one is struck by the fact that Ms. Garrett's voice is an instrument largely lacking in depth & expression. All the notes are in place, more or less, but there is no nuance. She does nothing with music she performs to shape the melody or the lyrics that might imbue it with her own distinct interpretation. While she isn't nearly the joke as some of the "popera" acts which seem to be all the rage these days, Ms. Garrett nonetheless leaves us only with the impression of how remarkably unremarkable she is.

These performances are mediocre at best. She has clarity and stable technique but her voice as an instrument is a bit shallow. Her expressiveness is also predictable which makes her boring to listen to. The "Art is Calling for me (Prima Donna Song)" was annoying - Kiri te Kanawa does a much funnier version, and of course, more beautiful.

As an aspiring singer, this CD is an inspiration. A sensitive interpretation, though she does rush through 'Si mi chamano Mimi' a little bit. Always wonderful to listen to her recordings of repretoir my friends and I are working on.

Garrett's intellegence shines thru in her singing........1999-09-10

Garrett's interpretations are unaffected, clean, and almost always seem 'right'. She sounds like someone I'd like to meet... The last song on this cd, "I Want To Be A Prima Donna", knocked my socks off. (I still find myself smiling every time I listen to it.)

Elegant is as elegant does!.......2004-04-24

This the review that I wrote for OperaOnline.us: There is only one word to describe this compilation of varied works by soprano Kiri Te Kinawa: Elegant! From the cover to the selection of songs inside, to the way each selection contributes to and results in a perfect blend of orchestra and singer, nothing is out of place. I usually prefer CDs that are thematic and carry a mood throughout, and this offering by DECCA, bless them, will not disappoint those who share my sensitivity to mood. It doesn't hurt either that Kinawa's voice radiates control and smoothness that sweeps one up in defiance of gravity to a place somewhere betyween awe and gratitude, but that is exactly what occurs here. You listen to the melodic expressiveness of Beim Schlafengehen with the Wiener Philharmoniker and think it can't get any better, and then find it followed by Ave Maria with the Utah Symphony, followed by Pie Jesu with the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal, and it does get better. The chorals are pretty impressive as well, as in Nuns' Chorus and Climb Every Mountain. Consistently Kinawa's voice soothes and never presses even close to the edges of shrill. She is a soprano with depth and a cultured delivery that wraps every note in any range with the delicacy of a mother's loving embrace. It just doesn't get any better than this. Give this CD to someone you love, they'll appreciate it, with this one caveat: the second of the two disks is less moody and a little uneven in mood. Hold the second disc back.

Best Italian CD ever.......2004-12-29

I bought this CD in Verona in 2001, since then its been broken, replaced, stolen, and again replaced. I've never liked a CD as much before to keep replacing it.

Viva Italia! This CD Rocks!.......2002-06-12

I bought this CD for my husband's birthday because of the song Uno In Piu, otherwise known as the happy birthday song! This one song is the whole reason I bought this CD in the first place because we heard it played on the radio and on MTV a million times while we were in Italy last spring, and we just loved the infectious beat. The best part is that I was really surprised at how great the rest of the tracks were. I really, really enjoyed this CD and I think its one that you can listen to over and over and over again and still love it! I haven't gotten tired of it yet! I think this CD is lots of fun and I highly recommend it for anyone who likes Italian pop music or anyone who just likes music that's fun and different!

Not the best / No es el mejor.......2002-02-06

This it is a light album, with no complications. Unfortunately, it turns out to be shallow when compared to previous 883 works, like "La Dura Legge del Gol" or "La Donna, Il Sogno e Il Grande Incubo", in which the songs go from worldly to spiritual in an almost imperceptible way. Good energy level provided by BELLA VERA and LA LUNGA ESTATE CALDISSIMA, in addition to the video files of both songs inserted in the CD. Excellent combination of Max Pezzali's voice with Syria's in ESSERE IN TE. The art is impeccable, the most novel thing being the booklet to which a shining UV layer has been applied in some areas, making it flashier. This isn't one of the best 883 albums, but still has some good things....

bella vera!.......2002-01-25

This recently released cd is a lot of fun, especially the video tracks "bella vera (non e il caldo ma)" and "la lungha estate caldissima". But these songs don't give the flavor of the whole album which is surprisingly varied. Romantic songs, like "Essere in te" and "Honolulu Baby" are well executed and beautifully sung. "Cloro" is an upbeat, strange song that sticks in the head but is uniquely flavorful. The title song's instrumentals are unique. It is a cd you'll listen to over and over again. The videos are delightfully cheesy, exactly what you expect from italian pop!

The last great album from 883.......2001-12-01

883 are very well known in Italy and other parts of Europe, and this is a very very good album!!
Track no. 7 and 10 are terrific!!

A GOOD VERSION OF A GREAT OPERA.......2004-03-09

This recording has been around for a while, and, in fact, was the first stereo version of this opera to be recorded. It's very well presented here, with first class playing by the Maggio Fiorentina under the peppy direction of Silvio Varviso. The cast is a good one, with tenor Luigi Alva negotiating the difficult tenor role of Lindoro with relative ease. Fernando Corena is a first class basso buffa, and he presents a blustery and fun portrait of Mustafa. His singing is excellent, if his coloratura passagework is not. Rolando Panerai is a lyrical and flowing Taddeo, possibly the best sung account of this role on records. This very fine supporting cast is centered around the Isabella of Teresa Berganza, certainly one of the greatest Rossini mezzos of the post World War II period. Berganza's voice is lovely, and very youthful. She negotiates the Rossini coloratura with mastery, but in the final analysis she is somewhat bland and colorless. She lacks the bravura steamroller style of Marilyn Horne style of Marilyn Horne (who in turn lacked the charm of Berganza!), who herself made a memorable recording of this opera many years later. As far as "Italiana" itself is concerned, this is a perfectly acceptable presentation of the opera, and one which still stands up reasonably well against subsequent competition. To my ears, the best recording of this wonderful opera remains the old mono EMI version with Gulietta Simionato from La Scala, under the baton of Carlo Maria Guilini. Simionato did not have anywhere near the fluency for this music that Berganza or Horne had, but she certainly had style and character, and she made every comical moment count. Guilini, very simply, reincarnates the very spirit of Rossini. But in the absence of this classic version, the London/Berganza account is certainly a valid substitute ---- and of course, there's always Marilyn Horne's spectacular account on RCA ---- though as a performance, I prefer this one.
