Product Description
Renato Velasco is an exceptional guitarist, equally at ease in the rich world of bossa nova as he is when playing baiaos or cocos. On this recording, he takes us to the heart of the Brazilian musical tradition. A pure delight!

Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2007-04-10
Somehow not up to her earlier work. The instrumental accompaniment is good, but tends to dominate at the expense of Cesaria's voice and the songs don't strike me as particularly memorable. One reviewer said this was perhaps the best thing she's done. If so, I just don't see it. I was disiappointed and found myself wondering if maybe her best days are behind her. I hope not.
Rogamar.......2006-03-27
An extraordinary CD. Her voice is smoother than ever. Nice mix of Cape Verdian music, Brazilian carnaval and some French traditional raconteur music.
Africa minha, Africa nossa.......2006-03-26
Cesaria is back with her brand new album "Rogamar" - (Prayer to the sea).
Well, it's like a tradition... every two years there is a new Cesaria album and she is on a tour almost every year. And that really is something... "Rogamar" (www.rogamar.com) is her tenth album and if you are a fan of Cesaria you will find some songs very similar to older Cesaria songs... like you heard them somewhere before.
But if you aren't a fan of Cesaria (what are you waiting for?!:), this album is a good way to start likeing her. But maybe not the best. (in my opinion Sao Vicente or Cafe Atlantico are her best albums; but also check out the Anthology).
My favorite songs on the album are:
Africa Nossa - definietly the best song on the album. Very nice melody and great duo with a Senegal singer Ismaël Lô. Probably to become one of her classics. First single from the album.
Sombras Di Distino - beautiful ballad, very similiar to Cesaria's older ballads.
Um Pincelada - very nice song... again ballad but very beautiful song. Nice melody. Second single from the album.
Avenida Marginal - up tempo song. Great rythm.
Rogamar - nice song. Very nice melody.
Rosie - mid tempo song. Well I find this song a little bit different that other Cesaria songs. But I like it!
Mas Um Sonho - nice up tempo song. Feel good (Carnaval) song!
Travessa De Peixeira, Saiona D'Vinte Ano - also good songs.
Well, it seems that Cesaria just can't do wrong... very good album, great songs (Africa Nossa, Sombras Di Distino, Um Pincelada), nice melodies, many emotions and one, great unique voice. Cesaria. One and only.
My album rating (overall): 4.5/5

Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Illuminating.......2007-07-04
I'm a thoughtful and introspective person with a diverse background. Of all the old countries, Spain's diverse background appealed to me. This music reflects that appeal.
Essential recordings.......2007-04-06
Not much else really to say about this. It is a collection of brilliant interpretations and the guitar has the most amazing sound I've ever heard on a recording. You will find yourself almost spiritually bound to share this recording with any classical guitar playing friends and aficionados.
Exquisite.......2006-12-14
I was browsing Amazon, shopping for gifts, and when I listened to the snippets of this, I couldn't resist ordering it for myself. It's a 3CD set of beautiful, varied music played by a brilliantly skilled and sensitive master. Barrueco has an extraordinary touch that seems perfect for each piece, from Bach to Paganini to Villa-Lobos. Anyone who likes classical guitar would treasure this set.
The "cool school" of guitar playing.......2006-10-26
This three CD collection is a reissue of Cuban born virtuoso Manuel Barrueco's early Vox LPs, recorded in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Included in this set is his stunning performance of selections by Spanish composers Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados. This 1978 Albéniz/Granados recording is perhaps the greatest example of what I call the "cool school" of guitar playing, eschewing color and warmth in favor of restraint, taste, and note perfect execution. One complaint: in this reissue VoxBox inexplicably spread the Albéniz/Granados selections over three CDs.
Bach and others on the Guitar.......2006-08-10
A wonderful combination between the Great Bach and a master of Guitar

Customer Reviews:
Excellent performance!.......2007-01-11
To play old classic, especially the guitar classic, in a new way is highly difficult task. None the less, Norbert Craft has found absolutely new, as it appears to me, intonations in Villa Lobos quitar music, especially in the studies. The technique is beyond reproach. Excellent performance!
awesome music.......2006-11-05
This music is awesome to listen to and to play. I bought it because it has all the songs from Heitor's guitar sheet music compilation "Villa-Lobos Solo Guitar: Heitor Villa-Lobos Collected Works for Solo Guitar".
Norbert Kraft is a very skilled guitarist. He puts his own interpretation into the music, which I like a lot. The recording is very good.
What a wounderful work..........2006-08-06
If you play classical guitar, you know that you just got to know how to play the Villa-Lobos 12 studies...
What a wounderful interpretation by Mr. Kraft.
Flawless technique - musically flat.......2006-06-05
Kraft's performance on this album is rushed, mechanical, and emotionally shallow. It's like listening to a MIDI sequencer -- every note is perfect, but somehow Kraft manages to lose the music.
At the end of this CD, I felt very disappointed.
A nice collection of all 23 guitar solos by a talented composer.......2006-05-13
This CD is a treat in that you get all 23 guitar solos on one CD played to perfection by Norbert Kraft. I found the pieces to be firmly grounded in South American folk music, possibly even Latino street music, with just a touch of the influence of jazz. The works are sometimes complex and at others almost minimal. Kraft plays with technically perfect style, clean and exact, with every note in place. I find that this CD is also non-intrusive when reading or working at home.

Like Finding An Old Friend.......2007-07-14
This album, now in its thirty-oddth year, is a treasure. Almeida, Terri, and maybe now also Ruderman have passed on. They were mortals after all. The playing by Almeida and Ruderman just on its own is wonderful, and too magical to be called merely good, or solid, or workman-like. Add the third ingredient of no less than the voice of Salli Terri, and the listener may as well be levitated. Good music takes us perhaps the nearest we can ever get to a ride on a magic carpet. Duets with Spanish Guitar is fine music by a trio of, well, if not genies exactly, flesh and blood beings with extraordinary musical abilities.
A Sweet Piece of Art Work.......2007-05-13
I first heard this recording on vinyl. This CD lives up to the quality first captured in that original recording. Laurindo Almeida requires no review or publicity; he is a legend exceeding Segovia or Montoya. Salli Terri, mezzo-soprano, happily, has no vibrato. When she hits a note, she means it...no wavering somewhere between tones leaving you some subliminal perception of the intended note. She has an absolutely pure, rich voice and a profound comprehension of aesthetics. I have not heard other works by Martin Ruderman, who accompanies on flute, but his skills are notable within this sweet ensemble. A wealth of skill and mastery contained on this tiny CD! I am sure you will be transported.
Haunting Beauty.......2007-03-22
I'm fascinated by the reviews from those who remember this album of long ago. In 1971 my girlfriend and I spent a night in a rustic B&B in Big Sur. The following morning, as we dined on a scrumptious breakfast and the love in each other's eyes, I had to ask the waitress about the music playing in the background. We bought the record as soon as we got home, and I have cherished it ever since. Six additional selections on the CD reissue are almost superfluous. The memories, and the music, are precious.
Superb .......2007-01-08
From beginning to end, I am enthralled by this album. I bought the original LP when it came out over 40 years ago and I also own the CD version. All performers are themselves excellent and they blend wonderfully on a Grammy awarded sound track. The biggest thrill for me is always Salli Terri's Bachianas Brasileiras number five. I have heard many recordings of this Bachianas by the most famous sopranos in the world. Salli Terri's singing of the Bachianas is in a class of its own --absoulutely spine-tingling.
Superb, lush and enchanting!!!.......2005-10-19
It is very hard for me to be objective when reviewing this CD. I'm in the same situation as one other reviewer said, my father used to play this record frequently when I was growing up. Of course, as a little kid, you will not always make a note of such things, and may not even care about it. I had not listened to this record since the mid eighties (when our last turntable broke and we made the transition to CD's). As soon as I started listening to it I was taken back to that time of my life, and all of these memories which I did not knew I had came back to me. This record had been part of my life's "soundtrack". It would be easy for me to be over-analytical, since I happen to have a degree in music, but I would not dare to do so. The music is pure, absolutely beautiful. If anything, even though back when it was recorded it won awards for its sound quality, nowadays we have been spoiled with modern sound recording quality. You can certainly hear that the recording was not made recently, but it is the performances that count, and these will always sound as fresh and magnificent as the day they were first captured on tape. I will have to get a copy for my dad!

Each note is a jewel that he performs with such life that you feel your heart beating to his rhythm. His left hand is amazingly clean but the stregnth and dynamics of his right hand could perform CPR without placing his hand on you. Gracias Dios para Celedonio haciendo Pepe !
As usual a Romero delivers.......2007-03-23
I love this album but then again I love almost everything from the Romeros. I can't wait to see Corazon Espanol up on Amazon though. The sound quality is amazing. I got a copy at one of Pepe's performances and fell in love. I want to send get more of them to send as gifts for my friends and family.
Not so good for the car.......2007-03-17
While on the highway when only the guitar is playing I have to turn up the volume to hear the music. Then suddenly the entire orchestra joins in and the windows rattle from the blast of sound. I could not find a volume level that worked for this disk. The music was lovely but the sound engineering was disappointing.
The Music Evokes Feelings of Joy and Comfort.......2007-01-02
Listening to this album gives me the feeling of being three years old and starting to fall asleep after dinner and my father picking me up and carrying me to bed. I cannot describe how his music envelopes me-- I do not know why but every time I hear it I start to tear up. On this CD he is backed by an orchestra and hearing him play and them back him so perfectly is a delight to the ears. I play this CD for everything-- but I like it when I am lying down after a workout with candles lit and I can just close my eyes and melt into the music. I am not a music person-- I know very little and only know what I like but cannot explain it, but this CD is very, very wonderful. If you like guitar music of the classic genre, you will love this CD.
Great CD!.......2006-08-10
I put it on and press repeat. Very beautiful music and the orchestra is wonderful.

Album Description
Seventy-eight guitar classics are put together in 100 YEARS OF JAZZ GUITAR, a remarkable 4-CD anthology that yields the absolutely definitive jazz guitar collection ever assembled. The set spans the years 1906 to 2001, from the ragtime banjo of Vess Ossman (originally recorded on an Edison cylinder) to the diaphonous chords of Bill Frisell. In between, virtually every major figure of the jazz guitar weighs in, from Eddie Lang, Django Reinhardt, and Charlie Christian to Les Paul, Tal Farlow, and Wes Montgomery, and right up to Jim Hall, Grant Green, George Benson, Pat Martino, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, and John Scofield as well as Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, and the great Jimi Hendrix.
In addition, the box also contains a book filled with photographs of each of the principles heard herein, an overview essay by guitar scholar Charles Alexander, old guitar ads, photos of classic guitar models and amps, solo transcriptions and technical analysis, testimonials from guitar legends, and precise discographical data. Clearly, 100 YEARS OF JAZZ GUITAR is the set to get if one is even remotely interested in the history and development of guitar over the course of the past century.

Progressions: 100 Years Of Jazz Guitar.......2007-02-11
What a shame one never gets to hear Oscar Almen do what he does better
than just about any other Guitarist,Or hear enough Django,Charlie Christen
,Teddy Bunn,To really understand why they are more than just fine Guitarist....they are "Jazz Greats"
Thats because this Collection is more Intrested in getting
non jazz fans to buy this set.
There's a few odd things about this very good box set.The fact
that the cover of the Booklet(which is very nice)is a picture of a flattop
guitar, and there's plenty of Guitars and Guitarist that should be in a rock or pop collection
I guess when they were trying to update the fine two record set
50 years of jazz Guitar,They stuck with the one track pre artist.
This makes for a lot of space for many guitarists,Which is the main
problem with this set.Instead of giving you 2 or 3 cuts from real
jazz greats(not just fine Guitar Players)they fill the four
cds with Pop and Rock recordings that have no place in a jazz Guitar
collection.
I love Santana ,but he's not Jazz,Part of something being jazz in
improvisation, something that Santana doen't do much of .Which
doesn't make "Europa" any less great,.Also just because you
Improvise doesn't mean that a artist is a jazz also.Theres plenty
of Guitarists that have nothing to do with jazz on this set. Some
are jazz players who play pop(Earl Klugh),Others like Hendrix
or Jeff Beck aren't Jazz at all.The last pages
of the booklet are pictures of Strats and Les Pauls and even
a Classical guitar gets a double page spread how silly is That!
This collection could have been better.......2006-07-26
After listening to this 4 cd set several times I've come to the conclusion that it could have been better condensed into 2 spectacular jazz cd's. First of all, cd 1 starts off with what sounds like banjo. Who's bright idea what it to include it on 100 years of jazz guitar? There are also songs that are dominated by saxophone and/or vocals with guitar as a background instrument.
If I wanted to hear vocals and sax I would have purchased cd's with vocals and/or Coltrane or Sonny Rollins, repectively.
There are only a few gems on cd 1 most notably Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian.
Cd 2 is probably the best with cd 3 close behind. However, can somebody tell me why Jimi Hendrix doing "Manic Depression" is on this cd? If you know the answer then perhaps you may also know why in the world Carlos Santana is on this collection as well.
And Derek Bailey's 1997, "Should Be Reversed" is just garbage!!! THIS IS NOT JAZZ!!! Who's bright idea was it to put this track on the compilation? I keep thinking, another Django tune, another Wes Montgomery, Pass, Ellis, Burrell tune would have been better suited to make this a better compilation.
All that 1970's distorted psuedo-jazz fusion racket by the likes of John McLaughlin and others dominate cd 4. Cd 4 contains all the "really want to play rock, but call themselves jazz guitarists."
There are some great guitarists and tasty licks on this cd package, but there is also NON jazz on this too. Be advised.
Historical Integrity!.......2006-06-06
Everyone will find something of their own here, be it pre-Charlie Christian or late period Miles. My own contribution (as a reviewer) is to commend the compilers for a keen sense of history. Instead of simply falling into the listmania cliche of "the 100 best X" they have chosen players according to a wide variety of criteria. Two that JUMP out here are: (1) how INFLUENTIAL a guitarist has been regardless of record sales or fame; (2) how HISTORICALLY or MUSICALLY significant a given recording has been. In the first category I note the recognition of Lenny Breau and Sonny Sharrock who are far from household naems. In the second category I note the inclusion of tracks that point to landmarks in the evolution of music and jazz guitar : Birds of Fire, June 15 from Duster (Burton/Coryell), Bright Size Life. This box set will delight you if you are a well-seasoned jazz enthusiast or coming to the genre for the first time. A fantastic value!!!!
Essential guitar history.......2006-05-17
A monumental work, this four-CD box set celebrates the evolution of jazz from the perspective of our favorite instrument. Featuring representative cuts from 75 pivotal players, 100 Years of Jazz Guitar offers selections from the dawn of recorded music (originally captured on Edison cylinders) extending to the present day. The adventure begins with a harp-guitarist strumming in 1906 and stretches to Bill Frisell's "Ron Carter," released in 2001. Relatively unsung giants, such as Lonnie Johnson, Roy Smeck, and Eddie Condon rub shoulders with the likes of Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery, and Pat Metheny. The scope is enormous -- shifting from Sol Hoopii's bouncy lap slide to Marc Ribot's skronky sonics is a mind-bender -- but that's what makes this collection so valuable. We hear the entire spectrum of jazz guitar, from swing to bebop to funk to avant-garde. There's plenty to read, as well: John Scofield penned the collection's intro (he also appears musically), there's a bio for every player, and 25 of the included guitarists reveal who they find inspiring and why. "Essential" is an overused word, but in this case, it's wonderfully appropriate.
100 Years.......2006-03-11
Sometimes you just love something but have no idea about where it came from - its history. This set has filled in a lot of blanks for me and has had me listening to stuff by some great guitarists that I wouldn't ordinarily tune in to. And it's all good.

Better than the previous.......2002-12-14
This CD, with its high resolution 128 times oversampling technology is better in terms of sound quality than the two previous chesky sampler and test CD. It gives you an idea of what to expect of various chesky artists and their CDs. It's a good CD to have when evaluating a system. Buy it.

Bill Frisell took the Downtown New York jazz scene to Nashville, and Marc Ribot did the same thing for Cuba with his Los Cubanos Postizos and Muy Divertido. But until Frisell's The Intercontinentals the robust, haunting sound of Malian blues guitar was largely untouched by six-stringing jazzoids. The aptly named Frisell ensemble here includes Brazilian guitar and vocal great Vinicius Cantuaria (playing solid drums half the time), Mali's premier percussionist Sidiki Camara, Greek oud and bouzouki virtuoso Christos Govetas, pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz, and violinist Jenny Scheinman. Rather than cover all the band's continents, though, the focal point is largely singular: "Boubacar" (in honor of Malian guitar pioneer Boubacar Traore) opens the set and has its vibe continued with a cover of his "Baba Drame," and everywhere the notes are hit and moods invoked as if Ali Farka Toure were looking on from Timbuktu. This is, though, still Frisell. An American earthiness crops up in Leisz's steel, as does the Mediterranean in Govetas's oud. And Frisell's sampled loops create an atmospheric cloudiness grounded by Camara's calabash and djembe and Cantuaria's drumming. In the constant sonic middle ground are the trifecta of oud, violin, and bass, merging the melody and rhythm brilliantly. Rootsy and undeniable, The Intercontinentals is yet another Frisellian work of genius. --Andrew Bartlett
Album Description
Blending Frisell's own brand of American twang and his inimitable improvisational style with Brazilian, Greek, and Milian guitarist Boubacar Traore and Brazilian singer Gilberto Gil. 14 tracks packaged in a slipcase. Nonesuch. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
Modal intercontinental music .......2005-07-04
The music Bill played in the sessions that produced this album is really modal. Almost all the tunes are modal vamp based on one chord orchestrated with the common Frisell extravaganza. This should not sound as a critic but on the opposite as a compliment to Bill's music. Infact the album is really a joy to listen, it has a strange amalgama of instruments and the music is in the end ipnotic and always interesting. I really really like the album but at the same time I can't find all this genius in Bill's work at least in the case of albums like this one. He is of course an extremely talented musician with a style of his own, very recognizable. He displayed his style all over a vast array of albums in which he still showed a lot of ideas. Nevertheless I can't talk about genius in the case of an album made almost entirely of modal vamp. It is really interesting, very well played and orchestrated, but genius is something else I think. And I think that this music cannot be called Jazz. Pay attention. This is not Jazz. It's modal music, contemporary music, improvisational music, but it is not Jazz. Jazz is that thing that swings. Anyway a very nice album. You can buy it with confidence if you love music with a lot of space and atmosphere in it.
Very nice but tends to sit on the shelf.......2004-10-16
I am a huge fan of Boubacar Traore and a big fan of Frisell's, so I should LOVE this cd, but I only like it. The idea that this is "uncharted territory" for Frisell is silly. The best tracks are those which derive the most from Boubacar. Other tracks, like track 5, are not uncharted territory, they are virtually indistinguishable from any of Frisell's recent albums. Frisell again seems content to mostly play session and studio man rather than take chances creatively.
That said, it was wise to draw inspiration from the great Boubacar, and this cd is probably my favorite of Frisell's recent work, along with Ghost Town; and I'd recommend it over Blues Dream or Good Dog and some of the others.
UPDATE AFTER A YEAR: After a year, I'd have to say that I think it's not quite as ethereal as it wants to be. Again, the tracks that cut-and-paste some Boubacar are nice though not really better than the sum of the parts, but the other tracks (try track 3) are nondescript, unimaginative, and oh-so-how-familiar-Frisell. I remember Bruce Willis describing in an interview that his approach to acting in the movie "Unbreakable" was to do "as little as possible." That seems to be Frisell's approach all too often, and while it sounds like brilliant philosophy, it doesn't suit either's work. Frisell is not flamboyant or showy by nature, so toning down doesn't contain the fire, it extinguishes it. When he goes all out in either direction, he's better. But too often he sits in the middle, laying down a simple atonal progression of a few notes, and then meandering alongside (tracks 3 and 13). It works for me about as well as when classical compositions which front a Hungarian melody or something: it doesn't. Some tracks here are great. I think we need to get Ginger Baker to get him to actually do some lead guitar again.
Melody, Harmony, and Rhythm...This is What Music Should Be!!.......2004-09-09
On this 2003 release, Bill Frisell teams up with a group of world musicians. This album was nominated for "World Album of the Year" at the Grammmies, and I can certainly see why. The music is so textural, melodic, and at times quite breathtaking. This album is has a real open quality to the music. Even though this is Bill Frisell's world music album it still has the Frisell guitar sound in tact. The album is very eclectic yet very accessible. That's the thing that I admired about Bill especially in the last 4 years is that he's been making music that is VERY accessible and easy on the ear unlike his avant-garde jazz excursions in the earlier part of his career. The instrumentation on this album is strange, but it really works out well. This album should appeal to those already fans of Bill's music and those who just enjoy good music.
From one intercontinental to another...........2004-07-14
Being both an intercontinental myself and a Bill Frisell lover, I was naturally pleased when this was released. But little did I know how absolutely magical it would be. Vinicious Cantuaria and Jenny Shineman make this album for me, they, like Frisell and everyone on this album, are the type of Artists the world needs more of. Intercontinental, unpredictable, modest, and beautiful.
Wake Up!.......2004-06-02
This album is, as my favorite cut is named, "Magic." Over sixty-five minutes of constant surprise: I get into the African groove and suddenly it's Greek; I sink into the Greek and a violin comes in and suddenly disappears; then there's an Appalachian twang, a Brazilian dance rhythm, and some sounds I didn't know existed till now, voices humming and wailing or incanting Portuguese or Senegalese, and everything blends, flows, and carries me somewhere I've never travelled. I sit down to listen to this with my earphones on and enter a new world. Absolutely mesmerizing. Haunting. Dreamlike. Beautiful beyond description. I'm going to move into this album and live in it till further notice.

Fans of Paul Galbraith, superb guitar playing, and just plain nice listening will not want to miss this well-produced CD of Brazilian music (transposed) for guitar. The oldest piece is by Antonio Carlos Gomes, a 19th-century composer best known for his operas (his Il Guarany was produced at La Scala in 1870 and has recently been performed and recorded by Placido Domingo), and is fine chamber music--just "classical" enough in style, but with the unmistakable perfume of Brazil. Heitor Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1 is a complicated work originally scored for cellos; it sounds just as intricate and warm for four guitars. Camargo Guarnieri's Four Pieces (originally for piano) are in dance rhythms--the third is particularly joyous and catchy. The Lundu by Francisco Mignone is a three-minute piece of candy--upbeat and delicious. This CD is a real treat. --Robert Levine

Guitar at it's best!.......2000-04-13
I have been listening and enjoying this cd for over a year. Last night, I attended their concert in Phoenix. They are so exciting to watch and listen to, I didn't want them to stop playing. They received a standing ovation from the audience, not once but twice! There were times during listening, I was so moved by thier playing, I almost applauded in the middle instead of waiting for the end.
I can't wait till thier next cd is released!
Classical and World music in one disc!.......1999-04-24
I got this release because of another Paul Galbraith CD I own -- it's completely different, and a great find. The technical brilliance of these four guitarists makes it so easy to enjoy this disc. I find that I have it on all the time -- in my car, at home.I was familiar with some of the music, but have never heard it arranged for four guitars. A wonderful treat!
