This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

Haunting and Lovely.......2005-08-07

I've had this record for years and listened to it hundreds of times. I never get tired of it. Victoria De Los Angeles has it all. She is moving, mysterious and melencholic and then exciting and brassy. "Songs my Mother Taught Me" can move me almost to tears.

Martel has richness for Latin American songs.......2005-08-30

In this recording of unusual South American art song repertoire, Canadian soprano Agathe Martel has a richness of sound that she uses expressively throughout. More importantly, she uses it musically, changing her tone to express the music -- at exactly the right moment! Fellow Canadian pianist Marc Bourdeau's clarity of musical ideas, sense of touch and rhythmic finesse show him to be a fine musician with an especially subtle sense of rubato. 
The songs of Argentine composer Guastavino are the "easy listening" of the album, but some are particularly beautiful. I loved the spicy harmonic language in those of the Brazilian Camargo Guarnieri. Of those by the Barizilian Alberto Ginastera, "Cancion al arbol del olvido" is a beautiful song in every way! It's very original while seeming traditional. Another Brazilian, Carlos Lopz Buchardois is very traditional, but "Oye mi llanto" is a tender and  touching lament, and Martel and Boudreau express it beautifully. The songs of Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos are easily the best-written. And though I like the final "Samba classica," despite its terrible text," I loved "Serenata" the most of any song on the CD. It's very much in the grand manner, and with Martel's expressiveness, it's absolutely gorgeous!
I may well wear this CD out!

Canciones de Luna II (Moon Songs II: Encarnación Vázquez and James Demster)

This second compact disc, contains further fifteen première pieces which complete the cycle of volume one. As in the first one, we listen here the superb artistry of Encarnación Vázquez, singing these cradle songs written specially for her by alive and active contemporary Mexican composers (in all there are twenty-seven composers including Volume I). As mentioned in the notes for the first volume, the stunning attractiveness of these records resides in the appreciation of the conception that each composer has of a cradle song, how each one throws light around this theme, which goes even beyond maternity. Themes about the night, the Moon, the stars and even the Sun permeate some of the songs in this collection, which has therefore adopted the title of Moon Songs instead of Cradle Songs. For the originality of the songs and the high interpretative quality of Encarnación Vázquez, these compact discs received the Annual Award by the Mexican Union of Critics of Theatre and Music.

Canciones de Luna I (Moon Songs I: Encarnación Vázquez and Alberto Cruzprieto)

This first compact disc, contains fourteen première pieces of the most varied structure, crystallizes the initiative of Encarnación Vázquez to conform a repertoire of cradle songs for mezzo soprano and piano, written specially for her by alive and active contemporary Mexican composers (in all there are twenty-seven composers including Volume II). The stunning attractiveness of these records resides in the appreciation of the conception that each composer has of a cradle song, how each one throws light around this theme, which goes even beyond maternity. This is particularly interesting, since not all the songs registered in this disc, are representative of each composer's habitual style. For the originality of the songs and the high interpretative quality of Encarnación Vázquez, this compact disc received the Annual Award by the Mexican Union of Critics of Theatre and Music.

An airy, jazz-inspired slice of classical americana........2000-09-10

Forget everything you know about Bowles the writer, his music occupys an entirely different landscape. He studied under both Aron Copland and Vigil Thompson. The influence shows, the flavor is unmistakenly american. By no means a major composer Bowles often worked on theater music for such notables as Tennesse Williums, Orson Wells, Saroyan, and many others. His music is as light and dreamy as a lush spring day. The notes jump and leap about with the youthful energy of jazz inspired classical music. This album rather reminded me of a Mona painting, with its impressionist sounds, very pastoral and airy. A great album to listen to while watching the clouds drift by the sheltering sky...

In her exile in Argentina,she met the best composers of that time including Carlos Guastavino, Manuel de Falla, Heitor Villa-lobos and others important composers, and she showed for first time their works all around the world, especially in Europe. This live recording is very interesting as a document of her time.
