About the Artist
Like the great Irish oaks from which they take their name, this band has their musical roots planted deeply in rich Celtic soil. Drawing from their varied European heritage– Irish, Scottish, English, and Welsh–Kildare’s music both dances with joy and is hauntingly beautiful, awakening a deep sense of devotion in the heart of the listener. As they did in the acclaimed group Iona, of which several of these world-renowned musicians have formed the instrumental core, Kildare continues to create some of the most memorable moments in Celtic music. The band debuts in North America with the simultaneous Coventry Music release of Morning Dance and Celtic Carols. Producers Nigel Palmer and Nick Fletcher, with keyboardist/arranger Tim Oliver, lead the band in evoking images of lush Irish landscapes, the Scottish highlands, and England’s verdant countryside with deeply moving melodies and rhythms that revel in their Celtic past. Kildare also includes fiddler Chris Haigh of Riverdance fame; mandolin player Dave Clifton; and revered musicians Dave Fitzgerald on flute and piccolo, percussionist Terl Bryant, Tim Harries on bass, and Troy Donockley on Uillean pipe! s and whistles. Kildare oaks have long been used for the high soaring beams in the roofs of Irish churches, and today Kildare offers a musical sanctuary for joyful and passionate worship of the Living God.

This offbeat disc of seasonal songs and carols by the Anonymous 4 will delight their fans and please everyone else. The 19 selections include traditional folk melodies and texts, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, interspersed with fitting selections by contemporary composers including John Taverner, Benjamin Britten, and Peter Maxwell Davies, whose ethereal a cappella A Calender of Kings gets its first recording. Andrew Lawrence-King, playing Irish harp, Baroque harp, and psaltery with his accustomed finesse, is a major reason for the disc's success, accompanying most of the vocals and contributing three lovely solos. The disc is crammed with highlight tracks, like the lilting Cornish Wassail song and the Irish Good people all, and haunting numbers like "Flight into Egypt," sung in Gaelic, and "Behold, here is the best morning," sung in Welsh. Excellent sonics and Harmonia Mundi's typically fine production values also help make this a Christmas disc that will give joy in July. --Dan Davis

Anonymous 4 has brought us a beautiful selection of 19 traditional songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. These include a lesser known work by Henry VIII as well as more contemporary songs by John Tavener, Richard Bennett, Geoffrey Burgon and Benjamin Britten, and a piece commissioned for the group from Peter Davies. Andrew Lawrence-King accompanies on Irish harp, Baroque harp and psaltery. There is a short essay on the traditions and legacy of the concept of Yule, a Cetic midwinter celebration, and this and the informative liner notes are given in English, French and German, accompanied by Celtic drawings.

The songs are pure, simple and very beautiful -- a welcome addition to your holiday listening.

Goose Flesh!.......2003-12-09

This is a remarkable quartet, singing with purity and style, from the haunting to the merry, medieval chant to modern settings of Celtic religious texts. Where there are arrangements, they are lovely and the instrumental pieces are simple and beautiful. This is the first time I have heard this group of women, and I am enchanted. It's a cappella at its very best: look to your laurels, King's Singers and Chanticleer, here come the ladies!

Ten years on, there are five volumes available in Windham Hill's hugely popular Celtic Christmas series and this collection gathers together more than 75 minutes of highlights from them. Special gems include the Irish band Altan's lovely and ethereal Soillse Na Nollag, the late Scottish fiddler Johnny Cunningham's King Holly, King Oak with its quote from one of the oldest lullaby carols of all, and Karan Casey's delectable vocals wending their way through On A Winter's Day. Galician piper/flautist Carlos Núñez' frisky Galician Carol adds a welcome touch of Iberian light and joy amid what sometimes feels like unremitting reflection and restraint. The songs and carols are heard primarily in acoustic settings, from which marshmallow-like synth lines extrude from time to time. For the most part, though, the musicians lean toward organic textures even when exploring more contemporary treatments, so the overall effect is modern yet homey, warm and peaceful. --Christina Roden

You can never go wrong with Windham Hill.......2005-01-02

I recently purchased this CD and I am listening to it as I write this.There are quite a bit of tracks from Celtic Christmas Three so to me this CD feels more like a reissue of that CD, so if you already own that CD you may want to reconsider this purchase.The CD as a whole is what I'd expect from Winham Hill and they always seem to deliver the same high quality music. Although this CD is labeled as a Christmas CD it can be played throughout the entire year, yes, there are a few standard Christmas selections but a majority are original compositions. The only gripe I have is Patrick Cassidy's "Lament" has not been included on this CD,and is one of the most beatiful songs I've ever heard.
If your a Windham Hill fan, this CD is well worth the money.
Great for playing at Holiday get togethers for that added intamecy, or when your sitting in front of the fire on a cold winters night.....OR anytime during the year!

If you like the traditional sound of the Uilleann Bagpipe, you will like this CD or Video. Liam has a style that is so quiet and unassuming that you will believe the notes come out of the chanter with no effort. Slow airs, jigs, and hornpipes are played with equal ease. There is one selection where Liam plays the tin whistle, too.

I have the video version of this CD, so watching it adds to the enjoyment. Wonderful music.

This is a truly beautiful album. Liam O'Flynn's skills need no explanation. With very few exceptions, this album is entrancing from start to finish. Some highlights are The Gold Ring, and the utterly beautiful air An Bhean Dubh na Gleanna, with a gorgeous orchestral backing scored by Mícheál ?" Súilleabháin (why can't the Irish tenors do something similar instead of that boring drawing-room schmaltz?). The strathspey selection is also beautiful. Perhaps the only shortcomings of the album are a rather boring original tune with guest Mark Knopfler, and a dearth of regulator work. One of Liam O'Flynn's strengths as a piper is his use of the regulators and aside from one or two touches, they are sorely lacking. All in all, however, this album is a must for any fan of Irish music and uillean piping in particular.

If you like "Out to Another Side", you'll love this one. It's classic Liam with his wonderful piping! Delighted I bought it!

Irish pipes and more........2000-12-21

Track 8 contains an exquisite arrangement with orchestral strings and two horns. (French Horns)If you love the horn as I do this will give you chills. However, this CD is lacking in lively ceiligh tunes which I prefer. Some of the fillers tunes are rather tame, in other words, and mainly of interest to the Irish piper. Which, on the horn track, is wonderfully plaintive.

Liam O'Flynn's piping style is a refined and stately thing, and The Piper's Call sees him with Mark Knopfler and Galacian piper, Carlos Núñez, Matt Molloy, Sean Keane, Steve Cooney and Arty McGlynn; with Micheál O'Súilleabháin and the Irish Chamber Orchestra thrown in on one track. The best tunes kick up their heels a bit,showing O'Flynn's mastery of the uilleann (Irish)pipes, wrestling with Núñez in the jig-like muineiras; or the madness of Keane's fiddle cutting across The Gold Ring. Like the uilleann pipes themselves, this album very much grows on you.

Over fifty minutes of acoustic holiday music. Although the instruments like penny whistle, bagpipes, wooden flute, piano and guitar give a celtic flavor on some tunes (Angels We Have Heard on High), for the most part the feeling was more new age or jazz treatment.

In one song, the overlay of a celtic dance tune with a traditional holiday carol became annoyingly repetitive (Hark the Herald Angels). I love dance tunes, but the unrelenting few bars went on and on without variation and started to grate on me.
