Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Before Kathleen Battle became a diva of monstrous proportions, she was a musical talent of intelligence and delicacy. This recording reminds us of the charm and brilliance of her innate talent. Her light soubrette is an enchanting compliment to Rampal's magical flute, as they weave the musical fabrics of Handel, Rameau, Saint-Saens, and Bishop. A shining example of excellent musical camaraderie is given by accompanists Garrett, Newman, and Ritter. Battle's voice and temperament are a lovely fit for Purcell's docile melancholy. Kathleen Battle: The Best Soubrette/Lyric Coloratura Soprano.......2004-05-06

I got this CD as a replacement of a damaged CD of Cecilia Bartoli's latest release "The Salieri Album". Even though Cecilia Bartoli's coloratura mezzo soprano is somewhat overbearing, it can never compare, or outdo Kathleen Battle's Soprano, which is hailed as from 1985's Time magazine "The best Lyric Coloratura in the world", and it shows in this recording. Handel's Sweet Bird is an example: excellent vibrato rolling, almost bird-like, and the coloratura in that piece is magnificent. I really got it for the Spanish art songs, and her Spanish is just as good as her perfect German. But the last selection "Lo! Here the Gentle Lark", is the shining piece. The coloratura, the High notes (I think that those are High E's that she's always known for) are just up there. I wish for her to release another recital/concert CD.

Sound Quality Warning.......2000-10-26

I am a Battle fan. That being said, I think it fair to warn those listeners who are accustomed to high quality recording, that the sound on this cd is disappointing. High notes are somewhat shrill, and the overall recording sounds muffled. And for those of us who dont particularly relish live recording, the not too infrequent coughs, dings and asstd sounds from the audience are distracting.

Real listening pleasure.......2000-03-22

I do not have a large classical/opera collection. This recording is one that I have had for about four years. It remains for me an uplifting experience. Ms. Battle and Mr. Rampal are magical together. The accompanists provide support beautifully. The stars, however, are the real deal--a mix of voice and instrument that is light and transcendant. One really gets a sense of being part of the audience at Lincoln Center that day. Tremendously enjoyable.

Excelent. I had oportunity to see this wonderful ladies of bella canto in Cable TV and for that reason I ordered the CD. Superb interpretation and recording.

Listening Pleasure.......2005-08-29

You frequently see the words "listening pleasure" used in a cliche' sense, but in regard to this CD, it is not a cliche'. For those who enjoy popular operatic and sacred set pieces, this is quite delightful. Both Gilchrist and Leigh have lovely instruments, but Jane Gilchrist's voice is somewhat fuller in tone and timbre. I have recommended this CD to my family and friends and I also purchased Gilchrist's solo CD, entitled Vocalise, from amazon.uk. Her voice is particularly suited to the Gilbert and Sullivan and Gershwin pieces on the recording. Nice to have new talent appear from such an interesting source as the Operatunity project sponsored by ENO.

distinct pleasure.......2005-08-25

The Operatunity competition, shown on PBS' Great Performances', was a class act, a really interesting idea that culminated with verve in a great success! I hope somebody puts it on dvd. This disc of the two winners of that operatic adventure is an introduction to two fine singers. Gilchrist has the more possessing instrument, not only capable of but seemingly born to a legato line. Her voice is the more Italianate of the two, and her singing soars. She's surely the more assured singer of the two. In fact, her inner assurance as a singer is astonishing, given she was working as a checker in an English supermarket when she entered the Operatunity competition. Amazing stuff. Leigh's voice is arresting, and often beautiful. She recalls a young de los Angeles in some ways, mysterious timbre, at times exhibiting a wonderful otherworldly quality. Her 'mio babbino caro' has beautifully lean lines and lustrous singing. The selections are well chosen, and the engineering is especially well done, with fine balances and loving attention to the singers. The whole disc is a kind of well sung opera primer, and picking up a copy will help the beginning careers of two fine singers.

Denise Leigh and Jane Gilchrist provide us with a very soothing and light performance. If you are a opera purist, this is not the CD for you. Although they don't have as much experience as other opera divas, they are able to achieve quality in their interpretation which any opera fan can certainly appreciate. My favorite songs from this CD are Je dis que rien m'epouvante and Dome epais. They able to transmit the feeling in their interpretations.

Both of them have beautiful voices, although I find Denise voice mellower and with great coloratura. Jane's voice a bit deeper and stronger.

I recommend this CD to those who are starting in the opera world and to those who simply love music and want to hear something light and beautiful.

The 'Operatunity Winners' recital album is a demo disc by any other name which was justifiably a run away success (topping the British Classical charts for six months and selling more than 100,000 copies. It followed their television discovery and introduced the (European) world to the voices of Leigh and Gilchrist, but despite being rich in colour and as varied as most recital albums dare to be it is not a good indicator of (either of their) possibilities or personal sensibilities, musical and dramatic - it dipped it's foot in the water and occasionally went for a swim. Now Denise Leigh's album 'Pie Jesu' is a collection which luxuriates in, if not the deep end, at least enough full emersion to satisfy our growing desire to hear this shining example of what a modern dramatic musical artist should be. She presents us with a programme of her beloved Baroque and Bel canto specials teamed with a few operatic favourite arias (more personally chosen than last time), some 'modern' classical song and sacred work plus the inevitable Christmas single.

Let's forget the idea that her voice is "light" in any negative sense. She is simply an artist who fits her changing sound to the music she is singing and it wasn't until now that she pulled out the stops and let her pipes fly. You couldn't want a more gutsy dramatic feel than that of 'Una Voce Poco Fa' or 'Je Veux Vivre'

Her interpretation of Puccini's 'Mi Chiamano Mimi' leaves behind any idea that Mimi is just a fragile flirtatious victim longing for the scent of a flower - here she is at risk of dying from the lack of sunlight while the fluttering of her Bambi eyes thinly disguises her desperate need for the poetry and the passion of her neighbour and her longing for the warmth and perfume of a good man in her arms and in her bed.

She is master of atmosphere (as in creation of, and manipulation of) - as we started to see on the Opertunity Winners album in the beautiful 'Song to The Moon' and 'Caro Nome', here in 'Summertime' with a phrasing which wants to be in time and wants to keep moving she sets up the oppressive heat and humidity of it's deep south setting and then sets out the crisp freezing stillness of a winter landscape and a fireplace seen from the wrong side of a frosted window pane in 'In The Bleak Midwinter'.

Certainly she is a flourishing musician.

spirited, precise renditions of excellent music!.......2005-10-14

I actually picked up this album at the Folger Shakespeare library, the D.C. library/theater at which the Folger Consort is based. I listened to it and was immediately pleased. The instrumental pieces aren't quite my thing, but they're very well executed. The madrigals, though, which make up about half of the album, are just superb. My title really says it all--these recordings are sensitive, energetic, and really just excellent. Pick it up and enjoy.
