Overall this is a great listen to some of the best trumpet players of all-time in this idiom. All of the pieces are impeccably played by some of the best. I didn't discover this tape in my collection until recently, and boy I'm glad I did.
Quite the CD.......2001-04-17
And comrades, let me say that you can't call yourself a member of the human race until you've heard Wynton Marsalis' performance of JB Arban's "Variations of Carnival of Venice." It's literally perfect. Buy this today.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Choppy and uneven.......2007-02-26
The complete Gardiner set is available at Rhapsody and I am glad I got to listen before leaping and buying it. Rhapsody must have several thousand classical lps, many in the budget range, but many just released cds or reissues like EMI's "Great Recordings of the Century." Rhapsody has the recent Beethoven LSO Live minus I think the third, Bruno Walter, and Bernstein with the NYP. They have Karajan's digital from the 80s and his set from the 50s. They have NAXOS, etc. etc. etc. The NAXOS set I suppose falls into the budget category. It is even enjoyable to listen to (after all, Beethoven fairly well played and professionally recoreded is still Beethoven, how do you screw up Beethoven?).
I do not have a for or against opinion on the original instrument movement, I just want the music to rock. In listening to the Gardiner take, the music sounded uneven and choppy. I actually found myself not enjoying Beethoven! Not even the two budget sets I have screw up Beethoven and cause me to not enjoy listening! I had read some of the glowing reviews of Gardiner and found myself scratching my head wondering what they were hearing vs. what I was hearing. On the other hand, the very recent LSO Live sounded wonderful. It remined me of the recent live performances by Abbado and the BPO.
I like Rhapsody because it gives me a chance to listen before making any buying decisions. I have been trying to expand my listening and yesterday tried to listen to Strauss's Salome on Rhapsody. For the most part, I pass on opera because the sopranos often sound like their cat is being strangled and this was my experience with Salome. Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, on the other hand was enjoyable to listen to. So, if you are not sure what to buy you might give Rhapsody or one of the other online services a try.
The best Beethoven symphonic cycle available at the moment.......2007-02-18
Gardiner did his homework on these works, finding, with the help of a musicologist, the scores of much of Beethoven's music. Who would have ever thought that the first subject of the fifth was plagiarised from a French folk song?
If you're after a good set of the Beethoven symphonies, look no further.
If you like the HIP approach, you may also consider the cycles by Brüggen, Hogwood, Norrington and Goodman. Brüggen's is very strong and Hogwood's was the first cycle on period instruments. Norrington's set follows the metronome markings very closely.
Amazing.......2007-01-02
Symphony No. 1 is performed very well. It is taken a bit faster (a general theme of this set) than, say, Karajan, Bernstein or Bohm would take it. This is a good thing.
For Symphony No. 2, I would actually recommend a compliment to this CD. Robert Levin (on the fortepiano) and members of the ORR recorded the chamber version of this work (for piano trio), mostly arranged by Beethoven himself. It is really interesting to contrast the two. I'd recommend that CD as well (it also comes with a piano quartet arrangment [again by Beethoven] of the fourth piano concerto. It is by Achriv Blue).
Symphony No. 3: The DEFINITIVE version of this symphony. Great throughout.
Symphony No. 4: This performance is the reason you should get this set. Symphony No. 4 has been largely ignored in favor of the odd number Symphonies. Here we have the DEFINITIVE, must have performance of this work. The finale is amazing, as is the deep beginning. The work is also the epitome of Beethoven's second style period, from the deep, gloomy beginning to the triumphant, allegro finale (in this performance, their is no "ma non troppo"; it is played more like a slow "presto vivace" than "allegro ma non troppo," which works very well). Great performance.
Symphony No. 5 is also brilliantly played. Among the best recordings of that symphony.
Symphony No. 6: The weak link of the more popular works in this set, though it is still very, very good.
Symphony No. 7: The scherzo here is light and playful. The pavonne second movement is very deep and moving. The finale is very heroic. I really like the sound of the horns; I think they work very well.
Symphony No. 8: Since this one is sandwiched between the great Symphonies No. 7 and 9, I think it has been largely ignored, much like Symphony No. 4 is with 3 and 5. Therefore, see Symphony No. 4.
Symphony No. 9: Where to start? This is THE DEFINITIVE and BEST version of this symphony available. The tempi are much faster than the other great conductors of the 20th century (Karajan, Bohm, Bernstein, Furtwangler, et al). The scherzo is really nice. The biggest difference between the finale of this recordings and the finale of other recordings is the tempo. This is especially evident in the march section. In Karajan and Bohm, it's more of a dirge than a march. Here, the tenor sounds light and easy, whereas in the other versions he (typically) sounds slow and strained.
Overall, this set is well worth owning. You will not be disappointed.
An Outstanding Symphonic Cycle.......2006-12-16
I recall that when the Gardiner set came out that there were some people, my wife included, who thought they were too fast. Listening to the 9th symphony the first movement is so furiously driven that the tempos sound out of control. The symphony last just under 60 minutes which may sound like a record until one considers that Felix Weingartner (a Beethoven expert) turned in a performance just over 60 minutes. The performances are vibrant and well played, all of them the product of live performances, a few like the 9th were made following a performance. For me the Gardiner cycle has a freshness that while not excluding other recordings (period instrument and modern symphony orchestra) has made this the only complete cycle that I have of the Beethoven symphonies. Perhaps the most telling evidence that Gardiner's approach to Beethoven has been influential is the rethinking of the tempos of the symphonies by conductors like Bernard Haitink. I highly recommend this cycle of symphonies for someone new to Beethoven and those listeners who are familiar with this music.
Excellent.......2005-10-21
I liked Gardiner interpretation of the Beethoven Simphonies. Vigorous, somewhat fast and very well recorded. In 9th simphony I would prefer a slower tempo but this is my opinion.
You should like a song because you really like it and not because some classical music "pundit" says that this is the correct way to play because there is not such a thing. The only person that could have the final word is Ludwig.

Celine Dion's straight-from-the-heart, sincerity-stung singing, woven together with Anne Geddes' visual gifts, perform a neat symbiotic trick. If you never quite got Geddes' photographs (not everyone can find artistic merit in lineups of sleepyheaded newborns dressed as bumblebees), or if Celine's vocals seemed over-the-top emotional, this package irons out the separate but unsinkable appeal of both artists with drawstring-like efficiency. On the DVD, Celine's vocals are the musical equivalent of comfort food, zapping the weirdness out of the babies-as-blooms sequences with raw maternal warmth. And Geddes' playful images--the title track tucks a newborn into a lotus leaf, and "What a Wonderful World" blazes to life in bouquets of red rose bonnets--leavens Celine's swollen-hearted delivery with whimsy. Miracle's subtitle is A Celebration of New Life, and while Geddes and Dion go at it with opposite M.O.s, they meet in the middle with a box set to be prized for its exploration of the shades of a parent's love. There are a couple of reasons not to keep this package cribside, though: For one, the urge to stare dreamily at a sleeping newborn while Celine's stunning rendition of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" plays notwithstanding, her note-pounding delivery is at times un-lullaby-like. For another, the images gathered in the 57-page booklet that accompanies the DVD and CD are too captivating to risk dampening with drool. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description

A Beautiful Miracle.......2006-08-27
I hate it !.......2005-10-11
and WHEN we'll be set free to listen to real music...
We all are so tired of her !
If you love Geddes, consider upgrading your purchase.......2004-11-30
I had hoped the DVD might focus on how Geddes took the photos, but alas, it was a very high level overview. It focused mainly on how Geddes & Dion met, discussions around how the concept for the album/book evolved and some cute stories about all the babies that peed on Dion during the shoots.
Overall, this would make a nice gift, but if you can afford it, I'd recommend getting the larger book instead.
Weak, self-serving, waterd-down "art".......2004-11-20
And "Oh Joy" we get some songs from Ms. Dion. Why don't you just drive the knife just a little bit deeper into my sense of good taste?
I hope Ms. Geddes and Ms. Dion are happy with their work. I am sure this "book" will be bought by the masses of people who fall for packaged art simply because it has names that have been forced upon us. Open your eyes and see this for what it really is. A vehicle to capitalize on two watered-down artists who would sell their names to anyone for the right price
Very emotional combination of image and that "voice".......2004-10-27
If you are sensitive enough you'll feel the love in Celine's voice and it will make you feel good even if you are crying for the emotion. CD and book won't dissapoint you.
note:
For a fan, I think this is the best format out of the 3, because you get all the Celine pictures out of the book, the CD and the DVD.

Grieg's song's were almost all composed for his wife Nina. She was a singing actress with a considerable stage presence, if not a particularly impressive voice. In fact, Nina and Edvard Grieg were very much the Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya of the 19th century, though the style and substance of Grieg's songs' is as different from 1920s Berlin as can be imagined. Haugtussa is Grieg's most important song cycle. It's tells the story of a goat shephard abandoned by her lover. Each of the songs is in simple strophic (verse and refrain) form, but the music has a tremendous range and variety, particularly in the folk-tinged harmony. Anne Sofie von Otter's performance is the outstanding Grieg song recital of our time, period. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:
GRIEG APPASSIONATO.......2005-07-18
Von Otter is not one to do things by halves either. As usual she gives the songs everything she's got, which is of course a great deal. Thought has obviously gone into the way she has been recorded too. The acoustic is just faintly suggestive of a cathedral, but a voice like this needs space around it, and I myself support this way of doing things. I simply can't comment on any national or Scandinavian aspects to these readings. In any case I suspect the personal tone of this high-powered singer is a lot more to the point. The song `Spring' on the 18th track of this disc is well known from its orchestral version, but never in the innumerable orchestral renditions, many by Scandinavian orchestras, that I've heard has the climactic phrase of the melody been put over with such power and intensity as it is here. Obviously, the music has to be able to stand up to such an approach, and I find that it comes through with flying colours. The songs are mainly love-lyrics with some associated folk-pastoral numbers in a familiar way. There are some sad moments, particularly when the poor shepherdess loses her love in the 7th song, and the text of the following and final poem in this cycle about the brook must surely recall Schubert's Baches Wiegenlied to everyone, but even it stops short of what happens in that. In general however the tone is one of longing with intermittent joy, and every song seemed to me perfectly well suited to its singer.
Von Otter's partnership with Forsberg is well and truly established by now and there is a sense of complete understanding between them as we would expect. Forsberg isn't afraid to let his concert grand rip on occasion either, nor would I have wanted him to be. What I would have liked all the same is a little more refinement in his touch. He provides that very nicely indeed in the very last item in the recital. If he had done this more consistently throughout my mind would have been veering off less into tangential thoughts about how Gould might have handled such piano-writing.
The liner-note is brief but helpful, and full texts of the lyrics (some German, mostly in alternative forms of Norwegian) are provided with English translation.

A Great Showcase For The Great Soprano.......2004-01-31
Rosina's Aria From Barber Of Seville: Rossini's Barber Of Seville was the most popular opera he ever wrote. The story tells of the courtship of Count Almaviva and Rosina, with the aid of the clever barber Figaro. Rosini's first aria, "Une voce poco fa" is a beautiful aria which not only shows off a singer's talents but also the character of Rosina herself. She is charming, docile but feisty and fiery. The role of Rosina was written for the mezzo soprano voice. In fact, most if not all of Rossini's heroines were mezzo soprano roles. This is because in Rossini's day, the tenor Manuel Garcia's daughters were employed in the opera and they were both mezzo sopranos. But the allure of Rosina's character has drawn even the most dramatic sopranos, among them Maria Callas. Other interpretors include Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sills and mezzo soprano Cecilia Bartoli, who most efficiently sings the role with more closeness to the original Rossini mezzo soprano Garcia girls. Sumi Jo is able to inflect a "mezzo" voice in the singing but she embellishes passages with dazzling coloratura. It's a tour de force from Sumi Jo.
The Sleepwalking Scene From Sonnambula: Bellini's La Sonnambula is a bel canto opera if there ever was one. It was reportedly Queen Victoria's favorite opera. The story is about a beautiful village girl who falls in love, is temporarily estranged from her love but reunited for a happy finale. The Sleepwalking Scene is a close cousin of the Mad Scene. She momentarily loses grip on reality and revels in a hallucination while she sleepswalks across a bridge in the village. The first portions call for a sweet, lyric voice with long flowing lines. Sumi Jo impresses us with this ability. The last portions demand vibrant coloratura. Sumi Jo has the right stuff for this, as has been mentioned. She leaps with her voice, runs through scales and arpeggios beautifully and ends with squillo high notes.
The Bell Song From Lakme: Delibes' Lakme is a beautiful French opera, made famous by the greatest interpretor Madie Mesple. The Bell Song is a showcase for coloratura and for lyricism. Lakme tells the story of the Pariah's daughter, beginning with tenderness and romance, which is complimented with the romantic and exotic sound of the music and finalizes the aria with bird-like coloratura. Sumi Jo's coloratura is decorative and tasteful. She is a coloratura soprano in the tradition of such names as Lily Pons, Roberta Peters and Beverly Sills.
Gilda's Aria From Rigoletto: Caro Nome is a song about love. Gilda, Rigolettos' daughter, has made the mistake of falling in love with the decadent Duke who is disguised as Gualtier Malde, a music student. Gilda's aria expresses innocent love and exuberance. Sumi Jo's voice is perfect for this kind of role. She is young and her voice comes off as young. In addition, Sumi Jo is a beautiful woman. If she trains her voice for it any further, she might become a successful Verdi heroine. Perhaps Desdemona from Othello is next ? Or perhaps the more famous Violetta Valery from La Traviata ? A great aria in Sumi's hands.
The Mad Scene From Lucia is on here and it's delivery is close to perfect. Sumi comes off as tormented, melancholy and grieving. This is preferable to radical hysteria as some sopranos have made the mistake of doing. Her elegant phrasing matches the music and she tops off the scene with coloratura and high notes.
Zerbinetta's Aria From Ariadne: This aria is considered the most difficult aria for a coloratura soprano. Why that is I don't quite understand. The music is beautiful and flowing, as is the voice that Strauss' music was written for. The aria demands breath control and soaring high notes. Sumi Jo is able to do this perfectly, ranking as one of the divas of this type of singing with such names as Kathleen Battle and Natalie Dessay.
So there you have it. This is a must have for fans of Sumi Jo and fans of virtuosic singing. It is a superb album, despite what comments say, most likely from people who haven't even heard the album and how truly great it is.

Acrobatic singing.......2003-04-20
in each track she shows her amazing skill in high and clean notes. If you buy ths cd you won't regret: sometimes you will take her voice for a flute for she is incredibly clean and effortless. In Lakmé aria you will listen at the end the best E sovracuto ever heard: it's clean, it's regular in the "vibrato", it starts and ends in the exact moment it should... wonderful. Glitter and be gay it's astonishing: it seems like she never stops climbing on higher and higher!!! Maybe queen of night's aria is a little bit slower than in other records and may sound less incisive, but it's always a pleasure listening to the perfect acrobatic singing of Ms Jo. With Natalie Dessay (who is even higher than Sumi, but less clear) Sumi is the best coloratura soprano of our times, and this CD shows her ability!

A tempting treasury, but only a few performances are great.......2007-02-03
Dropping down a notch in quality, we have an elegantly played Romeo et Juliette by the Boston Symphony, superbly recorded, that has few rivals for refined virtuosity. But after a while Seiji Ozawa's approach seems to lack depth and meaning; he's skating over the surface of the musical drama, however brilliantly. Sharp and brilliant also describes Myung-Whun Chung's contribution, a Symponie fantastique, two overtures, and the Royal Hunt and Storm from Les Troyens, all with his well-trained Bastille Opera orchestra. Chung is to the manner born in Berlioz, but so are greater conductors in these works, including Munch and Markevitch.
At about the same quality level I'd place the Mort de Cleopatre, a dullish early vocal scene sung with plushness by Jessye Norman, and Kiri Te Kanawa's Les Nuits d'Ete, which is ravishing in terms of sheer vocalism but otherwise vacant. Daniel Barenboim's slack conducting does the piece no favors, either, which holds true on a much larger scale for his Damnation of Faust. This is a typical Barenboim product, full of lush sounds, excellent singing, big-scale orchestral work, but leading to a meager artistic payoff. Barenboim's Faust isn't remotely competitive with Markevitch, Chung, Solti, Pretre, and others in this work. It's great to hear Domingo in the title role, but the conducting is so routine that I'm not sure the overall experience is worth it.
We get odds and ends of varying quality: the rarely recorded Tristia done superbly by Boulez, an uneven batch of songs that previously appeared in their own double-CD set (a chore to listen to in its entirety, despite the occasional gem), and a pedestrain Harold in Italy conducted by Lorin Maazel in Berlin, a performance that DG surely could have bettered by looking deeper into their vaults.
In all, I can't see investing in such an uneven collection except at super-budget price. If you do a little searching, all the best things here can be gotten separately, and the lesser recordings pale by comparison with classic Berlioz from Colin Davis, Charles Munch, and Igor Markevitch.
Berlioz with immaginative variety.......2003-10-30
The jewel has to be Ozawa's unsurpassed Romeo and Juliet. This 1976 studio recording had its birth at the Tanglewood Festival and features excellent soloists (Julia Hamari, Jose Van Dam, and Jean Dupouy), a very competent choir, and of course the reliable Boston SO. The recording is of outstanding quality. It seems cleaned up a little from what I remember of the CDs from the mid 80s; much more spacious, less muddy sounding. I especially like the chorus in the hushed night scene.
Barenboim's Damnaton is perdictably Furtwangler-like in tempo, and again features top notch singers in Fischer Dieskau, Jules Bastin, & Placido Domingo; Yvonne Minto is probably not in the same class with the others, but she's more than acceptable.
Levine directs a well recorded and balanced classical-sounding Requiem, and Abbado is more than competent in the Te Deum.
Chung's Fantastique is fun and enjoyable, if not first-class.
The rest of the works are very commendable, if not top-of-the-class.
In short, you can't go wrong for the price, and if you love Berlioz' Romeo, you've got to get this box just for the Ozawa gem.

Very nice interpretation of unfamiliar songs.......2006-04-20
But, this is not the reason you want this album. Unlike Von Otter's collections of Grieg songs, I find these really engaging. You WANT to listen to these songs over and over again, much like you want to hear your mother's lullaby over and over, when you can't fall asleep.
To the not-Otter fan, I also recommend the fact that unlike a collection of straight Chansoms, there is a very nice variety in the background instrumentals, which includes Maistro Levine and the Berlin Philharmoniker, a solo chello, a Stockholm opera chorus, and back to Levine. The notes are nice, but I miss a rationale for why the very talented Ms. Otter wanted to record these particluar works.
Try the Crespin recording first.......2006-03-10
Why? Otter has a lovely voice but she is an erratic musician. Musically complex phrases -- of which there are many in "Nuits d'ete" -- seem to confuse her (this is even more true in Otter's recording of Sibelius songs) and the interpretation of course suffers as a result. In comparison, Crespin is highly musical and always succeeds in making the songs into highly fluent, meaningful strands of melody. Her voice is excellent as well. So buy the Crespin instead. (I also prefer Ansermet's conducting in the older recording.)
One reason to get this Otter disc is the version of "La captive", a song for voice, cello and piano, which is an unusual find and I think a very lovely work.
