Customer Reviews:
Wrong track information on Amazon; though quality recording.......2005-04-30
There is a glaring mistake on Amazon's track information. What is included on the second disk isn't the composition Symphonic Suite "Roma," but Symphony in C, a youthful composition by the composer - written when Bizet was 17 (a very jubilant, galloping piece, I might add). On the web page it prints: "Symphony No. 1, '1868 Roma'," which is clearly an error. The CD program note itself has the correct information. Roma Suite is a more mature work, with a very strong romantic color. Unfortunately I based my purchase decision assuming that this would be one of the few recordings with both L'arlésienne and Roma.
That said, I must say that this is a recording with very good performances and sound quality, like all the DG Panaroma series I've listened to. It's good that the Carmen we get here is actual Opera arias rather than "Carmen Suite." Pearl Fishers inclusion is nice. Agnus Dei, voice arrangement taken from L'arlésienne is a nice surprise sung by Jose Carreras.
Another comment about the Symphonic Suite "Roma": it's a very nice piece, and although it is less known and not as dramatic and flamboyant as Carmen or Symphony No. 1, it's worth having it in your collection. You just need to find a recording.
I love this album........2004-12-04
I originally bought this CD set for the arias from Pearl Fishers but now I love the recordings of L'Arlesienne. They are great quality recordings.

Customer Reviews:
Not that amazing........2007-01-19
I bought this somewhat based on the glowing reviews others had given it. It's not bad, but not that fantastic either. I've heard much better versions of most of the music on it. Not quite worth the price.
Are you kidding?.......2007-01-05
While the musical arrangements are tolerably adequate and the orchestra is fair, this is some of the worst choral singing I've ever heard. They obviously have no concept of tuning and couldn't stay on pitch if their lives depended on it. I can't believe this is supposed to be a professional recording and the director didn't correct these glaring errors. I picked up this CD at an after-Christmas sale at 75% off, and I will forever mourn the loss of my $5.00. I guess it might suffice as a mediocre white elephant gift, but I pity whomever may be forced to listen to it. I suggest you not waste your money. If it's classical Christmas carols you want, search for more well-known and trustworthy music groups like the London Philharmonic and the Cambridge Singers.
Very nice!.......2007-01-02
I have to agree with the other reviewers that this is a very enjoyable CD of traditional carols. It contains a huge selection of songs. I was afraid that they might all sound the same, but to me, the orchestration and vocals are varied and well done. I bought this for Christmas, and it's one of my favorite new Christmas CDs in recent memory.
The Holidays Never Sounded So Good!.......2005-12-17
I loved the "50 Most Loved Piano Classics," so I decided to try another "50 Most Loved" collection, this time the Christmas Carols album. These are classics in their own right as the arrangements and orchestrations are enchantingly beautiful and the choir vocals provide perfect point-counterpoint. I hate to admit this, but I'll probably still be listening to this CD long after Christmas is over. There's a cinematic soundtrack quality that I find haunting. Have a great holiday with this one!
Very pleased.......2005-11-23
This is an excellent value. 3 CD's and 50 songs for under $20.00. If you're looking for traditional Christmas music, this is the collection to buy.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent sound for its time ; mostly fine Mengelberg.......2004-07-15
Considering all of the selections from this three disc Pearl set originally were recorded from 1926 to 1932 on Columbia 78s, the overall sound quality is really very good, thanks largely to the efforts of the already well appreciated Mark Obert-Thorn. There is a fairly good cross section of the kind of music typically associated with the legendary conductor of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra for a half century (1895-1945), Willem Mengelberg, whose style I've personally had some mixed feelings about. On the positive side, I enjoy most of all the lyricism, often associated with portamentos, he elicits from the Concertgebouw strings. Also, at times, I consider him one of the most exciting of all conductors. However, there are moments when I do not appreciate some of his tempo accelerations or decelerations. Of course, that's what partially makes Mengelberg Mengelberg. But, getting to the music at hand, despite more stylish versions (e.g. Leppard) I find Mengelberg's Second J.S. Bach Suite quite enjoyable. It blooms with a pleasantly flowing, consistently musical quality. Ditto the J.C. Bach Sinfonia No. 2. The little known (to me) Anacreon Overture by Cherubini seems to be well presented. As for the Beethoven offerings, the second movement [only] from his Eighth Symphony is rather beguiling and the Turkish March from the Ruins of Athens and the Leonore No. 1, Coriolan and Egmont Overtures are all given thrusting and musical renditions. Only the reading of the Leonore No. 3 is slightly disappointing to me. In Weber's Overtures to Der Freischutz, Euryanthe and Oberon that wonderful sense of Mengelbergian ardor shines through. The finales are especially invigorating. With the Oberon, I was reminded of Teldec's video, Legendary Conductors of a Golden Era, where Mengelberg is seen conducting the work at a special locale near Paris. That performance is even more excitingly conducted than this one. The cut scherzo from Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream is probably the only weak representation of the set. The playing is not up to snuff. There are two short pieces from Berlioz's Damnation of Faust---Dance of the Sylphs, which is given an almost unearthly attractiveness, and the Hungarian March, which though given an okay run through, also does not quite measure up to the conductor's same offering on the aforementioned Teldec video. The Liszt Les Preludes, however, is a horse of a different color---about the most outstanding presentation I've ever heard. Both of the Wagner selections---Prelude to Act One of Lohengrin and the Tannhauser Overture (Dresden version) are also of a high order. The "weeping" string portamentos in Lohengrin are marvelous, though I wish the sound engineers (if it had been possible with then existing technology)would have permitted the climax to resound more openly. Finally, the pieces by Brahms. The third movement [only] of the First Symphony displays some "different" tempo shifts, but in this instance I don't object. However, I don't much favor Mengelberg's engineering in the Academic Festival Overture. The wonderful Third Symphony is presented in its entirety. First, the repeat, which I don't care for, is taken in the first movement. Overall, this is a good performance but I don't consider it a distinctive one. I certainly can do without Mengelberg's tendency to race the pace in some of the more sensitive portions of the andante as well as the following poco allegretto, though there are moments where the Concertgebouw strings sing rather nicely. Elsewhere, the closing portions of the last movement are very well done. My usual preference is for a conductor to take a little more time in certain sections of this symphony in order to allow a greater feeling of poetic expressiveness. In this regard, I look to Szell/Cleveland, Weingartner and Jochum's versions with the London Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic, especially the latter, from his outstanding DGG Originals collection. In summary, a very fine set and one that certainly exceeds expectations for recordings initially produced so many years ago. Though this set is discontinued, it may be worth your while to search for it. Check vendors who sell through Amazon.
Wins My Prize for Best Historical Reissue........2000-08-23
To this and its companion volume, I would award the first prize in any historical reissue competition. To begin with, the music making remains perennially exciting. Then, the accompanying notes by Robert Cowan are models of their kind, offering broad general assessments of Mengelberg as a conductor and detailed pointers to these recordings in particular. The third virtue is especially gratifying to one who has had his hands on heavy original 78s and later LP issues of some or all of these items - the transfers by Mark Obert-Thorn are outstandingly good. Gone is surface noise. Gone are uncertainties about playing speeds and speed fluctuations. Unblemished pressings have been used. Older music lovers may know that these early electric Columbia records (which used to bear the caption "Willem Mengelberg and His Concertgebouw Orchestra) offered wonderfully full and vivid sound for their time. Details of balance, and the overall warm acoustic of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw are made even clearer in these excellent transfers. So clear is the focus, in the Bach Suite, that it is now possible to be certain that an old rumour is true, namely that Mengelberg used not one but five flutes for this work.
