Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Spanish Classical Guitar Music.......2005-09-18

As a sampler, this CD is an excellent introduction both to Spanish classical guitar music and to guitarist John Williams.
The music ranges from Renaissance composers (Sanz, Mudarra) and harmonized folk melodies to standard 20th Century works (Rodrigo, Torroba etc).

John Williams is excellent throughout. The CD is also cheap, and can be used either just for enjoyment, or further to explore other recordings by Williams, the classical guitar repertoire, or other classical guitarists.

As a marketing ploy, it is very effective.

For the collector or classical guitar enthusiast, the chief disadvantages of the CD are duplication of other recordings, and that the way at least some of the works on this CD are listed isn't helpful in telling the listener the set(s) to which these pieces belong and how to find them (e.g. "from ______, Op # "). The font listing the titles and track numbers is small and somewhat hard to read.

However, this CD should attract many listeners and enthusiasts both to the classical guitar, the repertoire, and guitarist John Williams - and I'm all for that.

Over 70 minutes playing time.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The guitar is an orchestra in miniature!.......2005-02-05

This admirable concept belongs to Hector Berlioz and it must not be a surprise the best guitarrists in the story have in common this trademark.

John Williams has always known the delicate equilibrium between the expresiveness and the glamouer. His impresive technique however is not exposed as his prima edonna. He goes directly to the soul of the composer, melts in his spirit and let the music sharp the qith eloquent conviction the composer's demanded atmosphere.

From Granados to Albeniz, from Rodrigo to Agustin Barrios - El indio Mangore -, from Moreno Torroba to Ponce , you will find the warmth, the passion and the Midas touch of this golden guitarrist.

5 out of 5 stars GUITAR MAJESTY.......2004-12-21

John Williams is a true Guitar virtuoso. His repetoire is very extensive and I use his music in my office while I work at my daily office duties. This album is a must for all guitar enthusiasts old or young.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, sweet music, an essential addition to your collection.......2004-12-07

I originally bought this album three years ago, looking for a good introduction to Spanish guitar music. And this one fits that need perfectly. I still listen to and enjoy it today. I play this for guests at happy hour or dinner for a relaxed atmosphere. At Amazon's current price, this is a great value.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2004-01-26

This album/cd is extraordinary. All the songs are gorgeous and exciting to listen to. John Williams' interpretation and technique are perfect. After 22 years of listening to it, I still enjoy and appreciate it more every time. I love giving it as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Stick with the Plot.......2007-02-09

Puccini.

Up there with Mozart when it comes to tearing the heart out of your soul.

Maria Callas - what a sexy women - no wonder that rich Greek fella courted her. She is a diamond, a truly wonderful opera singer. No, she is better than that. Maria Callas interprets the music into an emotional fury that extends passion and mundanity to their horizons.

Why buy Playboy when you can get the real deal right here. Smouldering femininity with knobs on. Simply the best.

3 out of 5 stars Callas, an over-rated soprano.......2006-12-22

Nicolai Gedda as B.F Pinkerton is brilliant, a true showman in the role and a brilliant tenor full-stop. Callas on the other was not good at Cio-Cio San, in fact she was terrible.
It truly shows the difference between the two lead roles vocal technique and capability, in 'Vogliatemi bene', Gedda was brilliant note perfect and tone perfect, Callas was terrible she shrieked most of her way through the duet and sang a shrill top C at the end which compared with Gedda's masterful top C was a piece of dirt.
If you disagree listen the the track over and over again, see how shrill and whiney Callas's top C really is.

All over brilliant performance by Gedda, Callas was unworthy of such a great Pinkerton.

5 out of 5 stars It's a SHOCK!.......2005-12-21

It's a SHOCK how Callas interpreted "Madama Butterfly" It's close to perfect. Must listen for opera lovers!

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps The Best Recorded "Madama Butterfly".......2005-09-07

There are many "Butterfly" recordings out there that are excellent in their own right but this recording deserves a category of excellence all it's own. What almost looks like mis-casting on paper, Callas does an astonishing job with the title role, which she recorded months before singing a series in Chicago and never to touch the role again. This is really one of those recordings that should be considered an historical event in the history of recorded opera. The collaboration of all the principles with von Karajan shows a unique unity that hasn't been duplicated very often.

But there's Callas' Cio Cio San that is really the reason to consider this recording. Even her silences, such as when she notices Kate in the garden in the final scenes, speaks volumes. There's this incredible thread that she creates from her entrance to her death that is like nothing I've ever heard before in this role. Also her choice of tone is remarkable and characteristic of this most chameleon of artists. She transforms herself from child to woman during the love duet and really does not sing at full tilt until the heart rendering final scene. This is an amazing studio portrayal and like I said, absolutely historical.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2005-08-09

I purchased Madama Butterfly and Macbeth online a couple of years ago. I listened to Macbeth first and was astonished. Then I decided to listen to Butterfly. When I heard Butterfly's entrance (Ancora un passo or via) I wasn't sure if the woman singing was Callas. As she went on singing, I was shocked. I couldn't believe my ears that this was the same woman I just heard a few minutes back singing evil Lady Macbeth. It was like listening to another singer. The transformation of the voice was a work of art itself. Listen to the way she says MORTO. The other highlights of this masterwork are the love duet, her mastery singing of un bel di, and her bone chilling con onor moure.
This recording is an excellent example of her artistry. Maria Callas' ability to change the tone of her voice for the different roles she performed onstage and recordings was great achievement. This is one of the many reasons why I love her so much. She has helped me through some tough times in the past. Whenever I was in need of inspiration, Callas came to the rescue. Maria Callas is my idol and I am grateful and honored to be part of the Maria Callas experience.

The Mozart Effect - Music For Babies - Playtime To Sleepytime Cd

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nice...........2006-11-10

My baby boy just like it..... and my wife is enjoying it toooo.... It is a very soothing CD to listen to. It is definitely worth the $$...

5 out of 5 stars still great 6 years later.......2005-03-02

I bought the "Mozart Effect" CD and a few other classical CD's; Bach and another Mozart after my daughter was born in late 1998. We had a difficult time getting her to sleep at night and decided to try playing music to soothe her. The "Mozart Effect" CD worked every time. As soon as she heard the Toy Symphony play she would relax and just listen to the music until she fell asleep. It's been more than a year since we played the CD, and recently when she was ill, she asked to listen to "her music". It still has the same calming effect. Regardless of the controversy surrounding Mozart's ability to make babies more intelligent, I think this music is very comforting and enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful CD.......2003-06-01

I received several classical music CD's as gifts before my daughter was born, and out of all of them (also including classical CD's I had already owned) this is definitely my favorite. It stands out because it is not full of simply "traditional" arrangements but rather is very light and playful - there are all sorts of cute little chirping and whirring noises that add to it as well. It is just a lot of fun, and provides the perfect background for cuddling with your new little one.

There is one comment below from someone who thought the music was too simple and was of poor quality. I would agree that the music is very simple (not a bad thing), but disagree with the notion that it is poor quality. Anyway, this should be just one CD in a library of different types of music, classical and other, to help your child's music appreciation develop. If it happens to expand other developmental skills as well, even better!

4 out of 5 stars Works as advertised-.......2003-05-23

The Mozart Effect - Music for Babies is a pretty good disc. Admittedly not the best Mozart recordings around, but then my child is not exactly picky. I prefer Genie's Angels All Around as a lullaby CD but either The Mozart Effect or Angels All Around would make excellent baby shower gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Works Like A Charm.......2003-04-03

This is a must have for all infants and a terrific baby shower gift. My son is 14 months old and he has been listening to this CD for about 10 months. It has a TERRIFIC soothing effect on him. I think Mozart has become a musical comfort object for him, much like his soft blankie has become a comfort object. If he is cranky in the car and trying to unwind for a nap, I pop this CD in and he is automatically soothed. It's like magic.

I like that this CD is organized into more up tempo songs for playtime, and slower paced songs for sleepytime. I admit I wouldn't buy this CD if I were looking for some real Mozart listening pleasure, but this is for my infant, not for me. (Although I do admit, I am also soothed too by a little Mozart Effect.) And, I wish there weren't two versions of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, but it is still worth the $$.

Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie Gerber

I'm a thoughtful and introspective person with a diverse background. Of all the old countries, Spain's diverse background appealed to me. This music reflects that appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Essential recordings.......2007-04-06

Not much else really to say about this. It is a collection of brilliant interpretations and the guitar has the most amazing sound I've ever heard on a recording. You will find yourself almost spiritually bound to share this recording with any classical guitar playing friends and aficionados.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite.......2006-12-14

I was browsing Amazon, shopping for gifts, and when I listened to the snippets of this, I couldn't resist ordering it for myself. It's a 3CD set of beautiful, varied music played by a brilliantly skilled and sensitive master. Barrueco has an extraordinary touch that seems perfect for each piece, from Bach to Paganini to Villa-Lobos. Anyone who likes classical guitar would treasure this set.

This three CD collection is a reissue of Cuban born virtuoso Manuel Barrueco's early Vox LPs, recorded in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Included in this set is his stunning performance of selections by Spanish composers Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados. This 1978 Albéniz/Granados recording is perhaps the greatest example of what I call the "cool school" of guitar playing, eschewing color and warmth in favor of restraint, taste, and note perfect execution. One complaint: in this reissue VoxBox inexplicably spread the Albéniz/Granados selections over three CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Just for kids?? No way!!.......2005-04-08

This is wonderful classical music. If the kids like it, great! But, make no mistake about it, this is good for anyone. This is wonderful study music, reading music, or just plain relaxing music. Highlights include "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers"; "March of the Toys" (from BABES IN TOYLAND -- the reason I bought this CD); "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"; "The Little Train of Caipira" (no longer little when the music is over); and the audience favorite "Hoedown" (i.e. "Beef, it's what's for dinner!").

If you're into that whole thing of classical music sharpening a youngster's intellect, then this won't disappoint. If you're just into good old fashioned classical music in general, it won't disappoint you either. Also, I highly recommend to both groups the classical CD BUILD YOUR BABY'S BRAIN.

5 out of 5 stars The best classical album for kids!.......2002-12-12

This is a wonderful album. Very high quality, and every selection is beautiful. My daughter (who usually asks me to turn my classical music off) loves to pretend to gallop like a horse during "Rodeo" and march like a soldier during "Parade of the wooden soldiers". This is a pleasure for the whole family!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Preschool Children.......2000-10-12

I use this CD with my preschool music group. The kids love it! This CD enables children learn about classical music without over extending their attention spans.

The 17th-century Italian art song repertory traditionally reserved for novice singers is given new life via Bartoli's artistry. With impeccable diction and evocative phrasing, she captures every innuendo of these simple, but passionate, pieces. No two repetitive phrases are alike; she chisels every line into a landscape of interpretive magnificence. Scarlatti's simple "O Cessate di Piagarmi" becomes a testament of innocent pain and plaintiveness. Giordano's "Caro Mio Ben" is transformed into a tender cry for love. All embellishments are imaginative and well executed. Accompaniment by György Fischer is equally appealing, sensitive and precise. Every singer questing for the art of singing should study these. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

4 out of 5 stars useful.......2007-04-11

I feel like recommending this compilation to neophites wanting to listen to some old arias to learn if they like this genre and to singing students:
Ms Bartoli's voice is not beautiful, nor perfect when heard live, but her technique sounds perfectly good on record. Here and there her voice gets harsh, flat, losing brilliance and warmth, but most of the time one can concentrate on the accurate rendering of these old and beautiful arias.

She wisely decided to follow the letter of Parisotti's score, therefore meeting the need of all singing students of having a reference for their study. The agility is outstanding but pronunciation and expression, as well as the perfect gusto in presenting the phrases, are what make this compilation worthwhile. Not a word goes wasted or neglected but her being Italian and her sensitivity manage to avoid overkill.

One could wish she would publish compilations of single authors of the xvi and xvii centuries, edited according to philological criteria or else other compilations of the dated but still useful Parisotti edition.

5 out of 5 stars Cecilia Bartoli at her best........2007-03-06

A great singer is one who dedicates singing to the text itself instead to himself/herself.
This is achieved 100% by Ms. Bartoli in this earlier album of hers. The recordings here cannot be termed otherwise than 'immaculate'. The very opening song 'Gia sole dal gange' is a display of Bartoli's unique timbre in its full beauty - glorious, rich and full. Many singers could tackle the range of this song, mezzos or sopranos, but who could pull it off in the manner as Ms. Bartoli? Credit to the one who picked this as the opening song of this fantastic album.
The songs following come in different styles and moods, all given full authentic interpretations by the singer. Compare the 'Vittoria, vittoria mio core' to 'Intorno al'idol mio' or 'Amarilli, mio bella' the vast contrast of mood, brought out equally well. The songs' requirement of versatility of interpretation is fully catered for.
I hate it when people say that this is a learners' album accompanying the 24 Italian Songs edited by one publisher. Such remarks could barely do justice to Ms. Bartoli's superb artistry, though admittedly, this CD would be an invaluable one for THAT purpose. What about the songs NOT included in the 24 Italian songs?

5 out of 5 stars Great companion to Schirmer's 24 Italian Arias book.......2007-02-21

Cecilia Bartoli beautifully demonstrates many of the songs in Schirmer's 24 Italian Songs & Arias Of The 17th & 18th Centuries, which is widely recognized as an intermediate collection of Italian repitoire.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bartoli, but not her best Italian songs.......2006-06-15

'The Impatient Lover' sung by Cecilia Bartoli is a collection of 18th and 19th century songs in Italian which were written by the predominantly German composers, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, and Hayden. Oddly, this is very seriously a better, or at least a more enjoyable collection, to my ear, than the 'If you Love Me' collection of Italian songs written by Italians, including Scarlatti, Caldera, and Vivaldi. And, neither collection of Italian songs is as interesting as Mme. Bartoli's collection of French love songs, 'Chant D'Amore'. All are done on London, but with three different accompaniests. I think the French material is just better than the Italian.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and useful CD.......2006-03-22

I used this CD as accompaniment and inspiration for a voice class. It's very useful and Cecilia Bartoli sounds amazing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performance!.......2007-01-11

To play old classic, especially the guitar classic, in a new way is highly difficult task. None the less, Norbert Craft has found absolutely new, as it appears to me, intonations in Villa Lobos quitar music, especially in the studies. The technique is beyond reproach. Excellent performance!

5 out of 5 stars awesome music.......2006-11-05

This music is awesome to listen to and to play. I bought it because it has all the songs from Heitor's guitar sheet music compilation "Villa-Lobos Solo Guitar: Heitor Villa-Lobos Collected Works for Solo Guitar".

Norbert Kraft is a very skilled guitarist. He puts his own interpretation into the music, which I like a lot. The recording is very good.

5 out of 5 stars What a wounderful work..........2006-08-06

If you play classical guitar, you know that you just got to know how to play the Villa-Lobos 12 studies...
What a wounderful interpretation by Mr. Kraft.

3 out of 5 stars Flawless technique - musically flat.......2006-06-05

Kraft's performance on this album is rushed, mechanical, and emotionally shallow. It's like listening to a MIDI sequencer -- every note is perfect, but somehow Kraft manages to lose the music.

At the end of this CD, I felt very disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A nice collection of all 23 guitar solos by a talented composer.......2006-05-13

This CD is a treat in that you get all 23 guitar solos on one CD played to perfection by Norbert Kraft. I found the pieces to be firmly grounded in South American folk music, possibly even Latino street music, with just a touch of the influence of jazz. The works are sometimes complex and at others almost minimal. Kraft plays with technically perfect style, clean and exact, with every note in place. I find that this CD is also non-intrusive when reading or working at home.

For nearly a decade now, Billy Joel has devoted himself to writing instrumental classical music. The results heard on Fantasies & Delusions show the "Piano Man" firmly rooted in Romanticism and short, expressive works that cover a range of moods. There are hints of Schumann and Chopin throughout the 10 solo piano compositions; Joel may wear his influences on his sleeve, but at least he has great influences. Some critics may scoff, but this is a solid debut--not a "classical crossover" attempt filled with infectious pop melodies, but an impressive recording of new piano works played solidly by Richard Joo. As with his pop creations, Joel doesn't strive for the cutting-edge and he certainly doesn't traverse the depths of human emotions (though the 11-minute "Soliloquy, Op.1" sounds a little overwrought). This is still a pleasant classical album that's infinitely listenable (and head and shoulders above recent "classical" works penned by Paul McCartney and other pop stars). --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2007-05-09

Amazing. It is very light, not serious. A very enjoyable CD

3 out of 5 stars At best, a sincere attempt by a layperson.......2007-03-01

I understand that Joel has a limited classical background. It shows in all of the pieces. They are, however, a sincere attempt at classical composition. He tries different approaches, like drama, wistfulness, and even a motoric element. But it's obvious that he needs to listen to more classical discs and brush up on his knowledge of classical repertoire.

Nice try though.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely piece of wrting played very well.......2006-12-31

For all that say this is a hollow initation of past composers should remember that there has been little groundbreaking compsition for the last 50 years (maybe 100) and what is groundbreaking I can barely stand listening to. It is not Chopin .... it not supposed to be.

Listen for what it is and you will find it lovely piece of wrting played very well.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable... unforgettable!.......2006-12-01

Wow! This is a great classical album. It's perfection. A hundred years from now, if only one recording of Billy Joel survives, I hope it's this one.

5 out of 5 stars Richard Joo is the pianist in the world - I heard him live!!!.......2006-03-07

I have to say that the performance on the CD by Richard Joo is impeccable! However, I have had the fortune to hear him perform live and I must say that he is absolutely the BEST pianist that I have ever heard!!!! I have been in the classical music business for years and have heard countless pianists, but RICHARD JOO is in a league of his own. Especially when he performs "serious" classical pieces. So, if you ever get a chance to hear him live, DON'T MISS IT!!!! I have definately become his fan.

David Russell's program ranges wide and far, from arrangements of such exotica as Arcos' Fantasia on Themes from Verdi's La Traviata to original guitar solos by the likes of Villa Lobos and modern Latin composers. They're all played with technical polish and, more important, genuine musicality. For Russell's playing here, as in his other popular albums for Telarc, has the communicative sparkle that draws the listener into the music, even listeners not especially enamored of the instrument. In arrangements of familiar piano works like the five Grieg Lyric Pieces or Debussy's La Fille aux Chevaux de Lin, Russell's playing is so warmly idiomatic he makes you forget the originals and revel in the rounded, radiant tone of his guitar. Telarc's outstanding sound is a big plus as well. This one's not just for Russell's fans or guitaristas, it's a joy for all. --Dan Davis

Another great recording from David Russell and Telarc. Just listen Grieg pieces and Galeron by Sojo. No more words needed. Every year a new David Russell CD....... Thank you Telarc.......

3 out of 5 stars Okay music. .......2007-05-14

A few good songs on the album, but not the best I've heard.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Album!.......2007-02-27

I picked up a copy of Villa Elaine after hearing the Garden State soundtrack. I have enjoyed this album immensely as all the songs are really good. Rarely do I find an album of a band I haven't previously heard of and come away completely satisfied! A++++

5 out of 5 stars Incrediblebly Consistant.......2006-08-10

Villa Elaine does not fail to impress. Remy Zero kept an both Villa and Golden Hum consistant in styling and production. It's an all hits CD. I love EVERY song on it, bar none. Indie albums usually tend to be very experimental and hold little impact on the listener. However, Remy Zero writes a blatent statement in each of their songs of love, revenge, sadness, etc. that directly relates to the listener. To any of those people who live Lifehouse, Youthgroup, Dishwalla, U2 (many stylings of U2 can be heard in this album) get this CD!

3 out of 5 stars Somewhere in between..........2006-06-24

This record is an interesting thing. If you read the other reviews on this page you'll notice it seems to polarize people between using words like "beautiful; emotional" and "derivative." In my opinion the truth is somewhere in between. The music itself is powerful, but certainly overproduced. It's filled with guitar swells and tempo-shifting tremolo effects, much like Radiohead's The Bends, but it lacks the feeling of raw invention and sounds more like copycatting (good copycatting, though). The lyrics are a bit nonsenical, but they aren't the focus. The songwriting iteself is a very of-the-times mix of Radiohead and Oasis. They do manage a bunch of good tracks, though, and a few actually do warrant descriptions like 'beautiful': "Life in Rain" and "Fair" both shimmer with acoustic delicacy. The bottom line is that this was easily a 4-5 star record when I was 15, but 7 years on it seems like the full appeal of it got left in the 90s. If you're looking for guitar music in the vein of Radiohead, Kent's Isola (the English language version) is a far better album that's equally accessible...but if you've heard a track or two from Villa Elaine and like the sound, don't hesitate to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Goodbye Little World.......2006-03-26

Beautiful album. I think everything has been said about it in previous reviews but i just wish for tell anyone who compares them distincly to Radiohead to listen again, they are not nearly as dark and tend to prefer to keep a lighten tone as show perfectly in "Goodbye Little World".

Also would wish a goodbye to a very impressive band and wish them all well in their endevours. Goodbye from Scotland.
