Faudel, the Little Prince of Rai, burst on the scene with this 1997 debut, which is finally receiving a belated U.S. release. The young singer offers his own rai revolution, mixing dance beats with Maghrebi percussion on "Anti" and the massive French hit "Tellement N'Brick" (both the original and hip-hop versions), in addition to throwing in raps, flamenco ("Omri"), and the outright rai pop of "Dis-Moi." Like Khaled from an earlier generation, Faudel brings plenty of new ideas to the tradition, and his high, still youthful voice appeals across generations; it's equally at home on the Algerian sounds of the title track or the emotional ballad "La Valse." Hip, sometimes edgy, but always retaining a strong respect for the foundations of rai, Baïda marks Faudel as a star of the future who's firmly establishing his credentials today. --Chris Nickson

Badu and her large turban appeared out of nowhere in early 1997, on a murmuring, romantic album that trod the median between old-school soul and contemporary electronic R&B. Badu's songs, especially the hit "On & On" and the catchy "Certainly," recall Sade in their polished, subtle sexiness. Badu almost never raises her voice--save the occasional "ooh-wee!" exultation--but she skillfully uses repetition and chanting to empower her words. Later portraying a beautiful swamp queen, she was one of the only good things about the movie Blues Brothers 2000. --Steve KnopperCustomer Reviews:

CLASSIC.......2006-05-14
Sometimes you can only do it once and i guess that's what all it took cause this album is still undisputed.
No need to list favorties...we all them from the radio and videos but for your whole album to be mind-blowing is CRAZY.
Anyone who doesn't have this album by now, smack your self and go get it.
Erykah's lyrics is very positive and earthy........2006-04-07
Until I heard the Badu album, I was becoming lulled to sleep by the same sounding female R&B singers of today, but she seems to give a new perspective to life in the urban world. This album has a very slow, mellow vibe to it, with occasional punches of energy, like on the funky "Appletree." This is the type of music where you could relax with your lover, do the dishes, or cook dinner. It works on many levels.
Erykah shows chivalry in underworld activities when she describes the predicament a lover involved in illegal faces. She even shows the rationale, and almost innocence in the tempting feel of another lover. The band she has supporting her give her the perfect baselines, and soulful sounds that she needs to reign as the new female vocal champion. The "Afro" skit deserves extra special mention for pure comic value in a combination of 20's style singing and 90's style dissing. Erykah's lyrics have a very positive, earthy, Rastafarian vibe to them and she tries not to be too preachy; although you can always smell the incense when she sings. This album actually sounds like something that might have emerged from the eclectic, early 1990's; when rap, R&B, and soul artists weren't all trying to sound like each other.
Badu had certainly found a niche in the music world with this album. If giving a fair shake this woman could be dangerous. She has a straight up writing style about her and her voice just comes at you. She is a hip-hop take on Sade with dramatic flair and storytelling to match. Erykah is one true artist that should be placed into your music collection.

A true tour de force, Mama's Gun is that rare sophomore album that shows a maturing artist at her best. Erykah Badu's voice was always her main attraction--its unique sound has been compared to Billie Holiday and Chaka Khan. Here, it's her skill with that voice that shines. Badu shapes her instrument to suit her material (all of it written or cowritten by her). A full range is represented: On faster, danceable tracks like "Penitentiary Philosophy" and "Booty," she sounds gritty and funky. On softer, more introspective tracks, like "A.D. 2000" and the single "Bag Lady," she shows amazing restraint, letting her voice travel lightly over the notes, allowing the songs' emotions to guide her performance. The high point of the disc is Badu's duet with Stephen Marley, "In Love with You," easily the sweetest, truest love song of the year. That alone is reason enough to buy the disc--and you won't regret having done so. --Courtney KempCustomer Reviews:

I never like to hype up someone's artistic work too much, for fear of the inevitable "let-down." That being said, I will keep this short. The bottom line is that if you don't own this, you really don't know as much as you think you do about modern music. Rather, you don't know shiggety about music, period. The feelings emoted throughout "Mama's Gun" will seem familiar and relatable. As a matter of fact, every man should own this CD, just to gain a better understanding of how women sometimes think and feel. I promise you this-- there's no way on earth that you won't enjoy the music on this CD. If you don't, then you're crazy.

There is always cause for concern when a promising new artist follows up a solid debut with a live album rehashing all the same material. After seeing Erykah Badu steal the "Smokin Grooves Tour" summer of 1996, however, it only makes sense that her record company decided to release Live as a stopgap between her next studio recording. To put it mildly, the Badu live experience is anything but typical. There is a kindred bond between the singer and her audiences which translates wonderfully onto the disc. It's in the warmth of the songs, the intimacy with which Badu addresses the crowd, and the constant chants of "Erykah!" emanating from the masses. For her part, Badu does a wonderful job revisiting the material from her superb debut Baduizm. She also takes on an assortment of covers, ranging from Roy Ayers's "Searching" to the Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long," making each one sound distinctly her own. The most captivating moment, though, is a new number called "Tyrone," in which she most eloquently tells a dense boyfriend to take a hike. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:
The Soaring Artistry of Badu.......2007-01-20
Ignore reviewer luke, this is LIVE!!!!!!!.......2006-04-30
What I'm reading from reviewer (Luke) about this gem is that he's reading the final credit's and coming to a false conclusion & totally overlooking the most obvious point that there are two recording crew's on this project. It's almost laughable that amazon let his review exploit falsehood's to us buyer's of real music.
(First)ofcourse is (The Live Recording & in-house Mixing Crew) which is stated (on the disc itself mind you) the vocal's(front & back)/instrument's/band & the wonderfully captured particapation of the audience which to me is just as important as the muisc in this case becasue the whole vibe is perfectly in sync.
(Second) is the Sony Music Stuido he's is talking about where they proceed(just like any other live show) with the final mixdown of this timeless (LIVE) cd.
This is the smoothess Live cd of 97'no doubt. Come on luke relax baby and don't mess with the structure and authentcity of grown folk's music, this is the real deal yah...
Fans of good music will love this CD, regardless of their musical preferences........2006-02-26
that voice !.......2005-08-12
Not LIVE, but still cool.......2005-07-07
Now, why did Sony do this? Her debut, Baduism, was in all likelyhood not recorded by Sony, and picked up by the label without the anticipation of huge success. By the time the cat was out of the bag and the album was successful, it was too late to go back and fix the fact that Baduism sounds like it was recorded by a five-year-old. So, they re-recorded Baduism so it's listenable, faked it being live, and re-released it.
And, yes, it does sound good. Good musicianship, good arrangements, good live-sounding production. I actually like listening to this album more than the original Baduism because of the egregious recording mistakes made in the latter.
If you have a choice between Baduism and LIVE, get LIVE. But don't have any illusions that it is actually a live performance.

Ms Badu; the High Priestess of neo-soul.......2007-03-29
It's a brilliant set with Erykah doing what she does best, presiding over the neo-soul and hip-hop beats like some kind of musical & spiritual high priestess. The first couple of tunes (including the wonderful "Intro - World Keeps Turnin'"); "Bump It", "Back In The Day (Puff)", "I Want You", "Woo", "The Grind" and "Danger" are simply flawless, in my opinion.
Things get rather ropey towards the end though, and her version of "Think Twice" is not even half as good as the Donald Byrd original. I've always believed that if you're going to do a cover, you need to bring something new (if not better) to the party or there's really no point bothering. And "Love Of My Life Worldwide" with Angie Stone and Queen Latifah is just awful.
Still, she ends on a positive note. "Outro - World Keeps Turnin'" is just a reprise of the intro but it's so good it's worth hearing twice. Besides, it does sound like the latter part of the album was recorded live in front of an audience - but I could be wrong - in which case, aforementioned ropiness is well and truly forgiven.
Cool CD, all in all. I like it. I read somewhere that this is supposed to be an EP and not a full album. It sounds like a full album to me and a pretty decent one at that.
She's due a new one anytime soon, surely?

You might not recognize N'Dambi's name, but if you own Erykah Badu's Live album, you've already heard her voice. Better known as Ms. Badu's favorite backup vocalist, N'Dambi is destined to become one of the brightest stars in today's burgeoning neo-soul movement. The Dallas-based artist's debut creation, Little Lost Girl Blues, was self-released under the auspices of N'Dambi's own Cheeky-I Productions. It's a well-crafted gem that deserves a much larger audience than its limited distribution has cultivated. The album opens with the spoken-word mood composition "Picture This," and from there journeys into explorations of scat-laced jazz ("The Meeting"), textured soul ("Can This Be Love"), and lushly retro R&B ("What's Wrong With You"). The album's signature piece is the achingly beautiful "Sunshine," which pairs the artist's straightforward vocals with a spare acoustic guitar line. N'Dambi's style is more substantial than Badu's, less mannered than Amel Larrieux's, and infinitely more complex than Angie Stone's. All comparisons aside, N'Dambi's talent speaks for itself. --Rebecca LevineAlbum Details

N'Dambi: Black Star from Planet Badu.......2005-09-16
Die-hard Erykah Badu fans all know that one of her former back-up singers and Dallas, TX, friend -- N'Dambi -- is equally bad. As in awesome. Period.
Less commercial, and perhaps more an original than the quite original Erykah, N'Dambi is arguably the ultimate Neo Soul artist for '70's Jazz-Funk fans. As in this sister's style is so intricate, she's sort of not even Neo Soul. She feels like the real deal from back in the day. From many different, better days.
These are The Six Degrees of N'Dambi, based on her superb, now classic double-CD set from 2002,
Tunin Up & Cosignin...
First Degree: Her raw emotion and adeptness with classic funk rhythms is as finely tuned as Bilal's. In fact, in some way, I consider N'Dambi the female answer to Bilal and wish these two would get together in a studio sometime. But where Bilal takes powerful hip-hop turns, N'Dambi masterfully dives into pure jazz.
Second Degree: That laid-back sound that put Erykah on the map? N'Dambi has this gift, too. They both exude a talent for a sound that says, "I'm way too busy telling you what's up here, pouring out my heart -- and having fun doing it -- to fret singing within the commercial norm." N'Dambi doesn't have a pretentious atom in her voice. Au natural and earthy.
Third Degree: Heavy (and these days rare) use of live studio musicians that jam in the style of Chaka Khan's killer band, Rufus. However, N'Dambi's band throws down serious jazz, too. There's consistently flawless bass work going on, at times reminding me of Ron Carter (the genius behind Badu's Certainly) or the spirited Marcus Miller. (Check out producer Kenneth Crouch's bananas bass in Black Star!!!) The musicanship on this double-CD is simply off the chain.
Fourth Degree: N'Dambi sometimes triggers a double-take with her pared down, plain-truth sound, "neo reincarnating" Nina Simone. (Check out Ode 2 Nina and Crazy World.) I'll even say that her unique interpretation is to purposely go flat and off into tricky keys at times. But it's cool as all get-out! Somewhat like Cassandra Wilson, N'Dambi's fearless about doing her own distinctive thing (in higher octives, though).
Fifth Degree: About that smoking band again... They take to the stratosphere two songs with a jazzy House music beat: Day Dreamer and Call Me. In both songs, the singer gets to the bottom of things. In one, getting deep inside your head to get up and get yours in life; in the other, basically asking, like Roberta Flack, Where Is the Love, baby?
Sixth Degree: With all of the above said, N'Dambi sounds precisely like... no one. Which is exactly why we dig her vibe. True to the meaning of her Muslim name, this sister's work is without a doubt, "most beautiful."

OFF KEY? NAW "ON DECK!".......2005-04-10
There was a time where she PURPOSELY sang out of key as a joke with her producer and it was documented as being just that from their dialogue after they finished the "riff" of the song.
Ok, now, this double CD is pretty damn strong, folks! This is a nice blend of Jazz and Neo remniscent of Ledisi's "Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue." This is a perfect "Get-together" CD to play as you and your close friends sit back and take in the smoothness of the afternoon as it mellowly swings into the evening. Great production and N'Dambi, as always, delivers the goods vocally. Get this CD, folks. Period.
