The REAL GodFather of Soul.......2007-01-10

This CD captures the essence of who Sam Cooke was and the intensity of his love for music. Had Sam Cooke not died young, he would have been the GodFather of Soul. Like many before him, he started with Gospel music and went on to mainstream on his own. My favorite Sam Cooke song is "LITTLE RED ROOSTER!"

I highly recommend this CD as well as looking into the man who was Sam Cooke.

Now that The Man and His Music has gone out of print, this is, to the best of my knowledge, the ONLY compilation that has Chain Gang, Wonderful World, Cupid and Another Saturday Night, which are in my opinion the four best songs of the masterful Sam Cooke, one of the great musical talents of the sixties who combined r and b, soul, gospel and rock into a unique style all his own. For some reason most Cooke compilations exclude one or more of these great great tunes, and in fact I don't think Another Saturday Night is available anywhere else. Excellent sound too.

Diva is a State of Mind.......2006-06-13

The fact that Oleta never became a huge superstar is kind of a compliment to her lifestyle. She was never assuming or haughty. She is a very humble person, with a wonderful spirit. She just loves to sing. I remember seeing her sing at the Hyatt in KC in the late Eighties for free. I remember seeing her opening at Sandstone Ampitheatre for Michael Bolton in KC in the early nineties not for free. She hadnt changed at all. She was still just belting it out, and blowing everyone away.
Her rendition of "Everything Must Change" is fantastic. I always smile when I hear "Circle of Life" on the radio. Of course her redo of "Get Here" written and sung orginally in the late eighties by jazz musician Brenda Russel got much more airplay than the original. It was made popular by Gulf War I. You will not be disapointed if you get this great collection of music. And dont worry about Oleta, she is doing just fine, still doing what she loves.

Several people in the reviews have said this is Oleta Adams's debut record. That isn't true--she recorded a live LP called "Going on Record" in 1983.

A True Singer.......2006-03-13

This is undoutably one of my ten favorite albums. Her voice in unsurpassed and the material here is flawless. She is a singer's singer. The fact she is no longer with a major label is proof positive that it takes more than talent to make it in this industry. Pity radio programmers don't appreciate someone who can really sing. I guess she should have done a striptease in a music video or looked like a slacker who just learned to play two licks on his guitar to get noticed in the music business. But if you love strong vocals and music done with emotion like me, then you should own this CD! After 15+ years and 3000 CDS, this is the one album I keep coming back to. Circle of One is definitely a classic. Thank you, Oleta!

still her best album.......2005-11-24

Oleta Adams' 1990 debut remains the finest example of her rich, rich alto voice matched with a bunch of mostly very strong songs and warm arrangements that surround but don't smother her beautiful singing. Production by Tears for Fears' Roland Orzabal is mellifluous while never bland and in the album's highlight, You've Got To Give Me Room, he pulls everything out except for Oleta's keyboards and a flugel horn. The space for her voice and the touching lyric is perfect. Oleta is often grouped with Anita Baker and Brenda Russell, but more often than not the timbre and fullness of her voice remind me of Gladys Knight. Unfortunately on some of her later albums, the material gets weaker and the production blander but on Circle Of One it all works wonderfully to create a very satisfying album that has not dated.

Best of Oleta.......2005-09-30

The debut album by Oleta Adams remains her best. Best tracks are Brenda Russell's "Get Here" and "Will We Ever Learn."
This is a true gem & must have for any music collection.
