Still as good as when they were young.......2007-07-07
I found myself remembering the words to most of the songs, that I thought I had forgotten. You don't forget, the words are just tucked away. They had a couple of new band members but the rest were the good ol' guys we remember. If you don't get to see them, this CD will be the next best thing. You will really enjoy listening to the songs on this CD.
After buying this, go check out "ToTo". They were the opening Band for Three Dog Night!!!

A judiciously-selected two-CD compendium of Peter Gabriel's finest moments, Hit offers a far more generous windfall than can be found on the only previous Peter Gabriel best-of selection, the 1990 Shaking the Tree. The devil, after all, is in the detail, particularly on the second disc (self-deprecatingly entitled Miss), which really traverses the whole gamut of Peter Gabriel's globally-visioned artistry. It includes recent soundtrack work (the haunting "Cloudless" from Long Walk Home: Music from the Rabbit-Proof Fence), material from 2002's sterling Up ("Signal To Noise", featuring a compelling vocal from the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and some ominous string arrangements, really does sound like a thinking man's Massive Attack) and goes right back to that fourth album when marrying the reticence of cold, synthesised new wave with insistent African percussion seemed like a good idea (it was). The first disc--including the MTV smash "Sledgehammer", anti-apartheid war cry "Biko", "Big Time" (interesting how the styles of Gabriel and his former group Genesis seem to converge at this time) and "Games Without Frontiers"--really speaks for itself, although with hindsight it seems the single-buying public-at-large had a particular taste for a certain kind of Peter Gabriel record. Universally excellent throughout, the collection is rendered even more desirable by the inclusion of three previously unreleased tracks: a live rendition of "Downside Up", a shorter version of "Blood of Eden" and "Burn You Up, Burn You Down", latterly included on a video game and initially earmarked for the Up album but jettisoned at the last minute. --Kevin MaidmentCustomer Reviews:
PETER GABRIEL DARED TO BE DIFFERENT MUSICALLY, ON HIS TERMS AND LEFT HIS MARK IN ROCK HISTORY BECAUSE OF IT!.......2007-07-07
PETER GABRIEL will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for singing some of Rock's all-time greatest anthems as the frontman for the legendary band GENESIS. However, his stint with GENESIS would not last very long. GABRIEL would soon quit the band GENESIS favoring and venturing out on his own with a solo career that would definitely prove successful. As a successful solo artist, GABRIEL will also forever be remembered for composing and recording some of the 80's all-time greatest Rock anthems ever. With this in mind, GABRIEL would record many great hit songs and albums as a successful solo artist during the period from the 1977-2003 years. In my opinion, in 1986, GABRIEL would deliver to Rock n' Roll one of the 80's unforgettable all-time greatest anthems ever. I'm talking about the legendary Rocker "Sledgehammer" released in 1986. What ROBERT PALMER did in 1985 with his legendary 80's Rock anthem "Addicted To Love," PETER GABRIEL would do the exact same thing with "Sledgehammer" in 1986. Which now brings me to the legendary compilation album I'm about to review for all of you today. "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" chronicles and highlights all of the great hit songs that PETER GABRIEL composed and recorded during the 1977-2003 period. In my opinion, this legendary compilation is without a doubt, a true testament of the brilliance and musical creativity of a masterminded genius. This legendary compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary artist that was truly indeed, far ahead of his time. This is the tales in the life of MR. PETER GABRIEL, his music is his story that speaks for itself.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of PETER GABRIEL to speak for itself and back it up musically as he originally truly intended for it to be. DISC ONE of "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" begins with the soothing synthesized and acoustic turned mild Rocker "Solsbury Hill," the forever GABRIEL stamped trademark 80's anthem "Shock The Monkey," the forever GABRIEL stamped trademark 80's Rock anthem "Sledgehammer," the beautifully slow heavenly and uplifting synthesized number "Don't Give Up," the groundbreaking synthesized mild Rocker "Games Without Frontiers," the danceable synthesized mild Rocker "Big Time," the bass pounding synthesized Rocker "Burn You Up, Burn You Down," the incredible bass pounding synthesized Rocker "Growing Up," the amazing synthesized slow/medium Rocker "Digging In The Dirt," the beautifully slow and well arranged synthesized number "Blood Of Eden," the powerfully mild and synthesized slow masterpiece "More Than This," this is one of GABRIEL'S many great experimental songs that succeeded, "Biko," the breathtaking synthesized Rocker "Steam," the beautifully slow turned medium/fast and well arranged 80's Rock anthem, "Red Rain" and the beautifully slow number with the accompaniment of the piano, "Here Comes The Flood." END OF DISC ONE.
DISC TWO takes right where DISC ONE left off with the incredibly sounding and synthesized slow song "San Jacinto," the fantastic synthesized, bass pounding Progressive Rocker "I Don't Remember," another great GABRIEL experimental song that was successful, "The Rhythm Of The Heat," the beautifully slow/medium smooth song "Loved To Be Loved," the slow synthesized number turned into a mild danceable Rocker "I Grieve," the incredibly sounding synthesized number "Family Snapshot," the slow synthesized "In Your Eyes," another beautiful slow song with the piano arrangement, "The Drop," the incredibly sounding synthesized Progressive rocker "The Tower That Ate People," the slow and smooth bass pounding and synthesized number "Lovetown," another beautifully slow song with the synthesizer and piano, "Father, Son," the name of this song is self explanatory and says it all, "Signal To Noise," the incredible live recording sung with Melanie Gabriel, "Downside Up" and the smooth synthesized and acoustic mild song "Cloudless." END OF DISC TWO. May I also add that PETER GABRIEL'S voice was perfect and on fire while laying down the vocal tracks for all of these hit songs. In my opinion, listening to all of GABRIEL'S songs makes me wonder why he ever left GENESIS. GENESIS' music sounds very similar to GABRIEL'S. Even PHIL COLLINS' solo recordings sound like GENESIS and GABRIEL'S. Whatever the reason may be, all of their music sounds great.
In my opinion, this music collection or at least on DISC TWO, this type of music might not go well with the majority of the youth today, I MAY BE WRONG. There are great hit songs on this legendary album worthy of checking out. If you like GENESIS or PHIL COLLINS, you can definitely relate to and get into the sounds and music of PETER GABRIEL. I would like to recommend purchasing this 2-CD compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. In doing this, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal PETER GABRIEL music collection. You can do all of your album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.
In closing, PETER GABRIEL has successfully continued in recording and releasing new albums along with touring and performing to sell-out audiences the world over up to this very day. In my opinion, Rock n' Roll needs someone like PETER GABRIEL to come up with mindblowing sounds and music that is new, fresh and original to floor his fans and audiences with. What I admire about PETER GABRIEL is that he doesn't copy anyone else's music, his music has and always will be different and original. Knowing this, GABRIEL'S musical creativity formula has proven to be successful and I know for fact that PETER GABRIEL is here to stay and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I also get the feeling that GABRIEL still feels that he truly needs to give and deliver more incredible creative music to the whole world. PETER GABRIEL has forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and his many contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten or denied. There will also be many new tales and stories in the GABRIEL legend and legacy that will still need to be written in pages and chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date. So here's to you PETER. Thanks for the many great memories and moments with many more still yet to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. PETER GABRIEL RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

One Of The Great Gifted Artists Of Our Times.......2007-03-24
There are always songs you would like to see on a Hits package and some that could be jettisoned and this album is no exception. I cannot understand why SHAKING THE TREE is not included. This is a song he co-wrote with Youssou N'Dour and there is a remastered version on his earlier hits album, also called Shaking The tree. It is a wonderful song in praise of Women with a gentle voal by Gabriel. Must be a legal reason or maybe a falling out with Youssou. One of his classic songs: IN YOUR EYES is buried on the MISS side and that is on the USA version. It is not even included on the European version. That is an amazing oversight. Also songs like LOVE TO BE LOVED from US is reather boring and does not belong here. He could have included from the same album, KISS THAT FROG, COME TALK TO ME or SECRET WORLD, especially the live version which way surpasses the studio version. Also SKY BLUE or an edited version of THE BARRY WILLIAMS SHOW from UP might have been a better selection than I GRIEVE. It would have been great to merge SKY BLUE and CLOUDLESS together for one magnificent closing track. The really weird THE TOWER THAT ATE PEOPLE, LOVETOWN and THE DROP could also have been left off so earlier PG material could have been presented. INTRUDER is not included and nothing from Peter Gabriel 2, although DIY is on the European version as is NO SELF CONTROL and I HAVE THE TOUCH. There are cut versions of some songs which actually help in the case of BLOOD OF EDEN, GROWING UP and MORE THAN THIS. Maybe STEAM could have been edited also as it is on the long side. Hopefully an anthology is on the way to encompass all relevant Peter Gabriel tracks.
BAD Remaster.......2007-02-17
Friggin' HORRIBLE remaster job. I can compare sledgehammer from this set and from "So" side by side and this set's version sounds awful. The mastering guy cranked all of the mid-range and treble up way too high and ruined almost every song on here. There is a major peak from 2Khz-6Khz. I get a headache after about 10 minutes of listening. Extremely harsh sounding vs. the softer orignal recording.
What a dissappointment. This thing will sit on the shelf. I have had this bad experience with more than a few remasters. If you are any type of audiophile, skip this and try to find the originals. Bummer.

"well-sung, theatrical vocals..." What cast did they listen to!?.......2007-01-07
I was wrong. I was very, very wrong. I realized I wasn't going to be getting the same level of performance as in the OCR release. But, after reading the reviews when I got home, I opened it. I popped it into my CD player, and my ears were immediately assaulted by their Gahlinda's warbling. Yes, Gah-linda. No other name fits so well. It's plain the group assembled to sing was trying, in part, to emulate the original cast's performance, and sadly, they failed miserably. Gah-linda's voice was off pitch and screetchy, frequently. Thinking perhaps I was merely comparing her unfairly to other performers, I played it for a friend, who all but begged me to turn it off. It was plain to us both that she was trying to sing far above her natural range. The other cast members, save their Fiyero, were decent. Their Elphaba was amateur good, and their Nessarose was surprisingly talented for the few moments time she got.
On to the music itself.
I have a reasonably high quality speaker system, yet the background music sounded like a midi file someone had made of the real music. Like something out of an old 16 bit game, or perhaps a talented teen trying to coax music out of an old keyboard. Thinking perhaps it WAS the sound system, I tried it in another media player. Same sound. Realizing that perhaps the guide CD might have simplified music apart from the karaoke CD itself, I swiftly switched to CD2. But wait. There was no CD2, because I had recieved two copies of CD1.
This was the final insult, for me. I contacted Stage-Stars and asked for my money back, explaining the variety of reasons I thought I deserved it. The woman I spoke with was polite and understanding, and, after getting my address, overnighted me a new copy of the title, shrink wrapped. It went immediately back to the store, and I got my money back.
On another note, on hearing the samples given on various sites of the CD2 music, I must conclude that it is the same quality on both CDs. In all honesty, you'd have more fun just setting the money on fire. Don't waste it on this purchase.
I could play it better myself on a kazoo.......2006-12-13

Thirtysomething Boston folkie McKenna often comes off like another Dar Williams acolyte, but sometimes she's a bit more. Her waifish voice and pretty acoustic arrangements can give way to a snarling wit. "I heard about Adam and Eve," she sings on the skeptical, newgrass-styled "God Will Thank You," "but I still believe she never got a fair trial." Her coffeehouse jottings can yield genuinely catchy songs like the sensual "This Fire" and the sunny, bubbly "Girl Like Me." Unfortunately, they also yield some precious poesy, or worse, songs like "Pink Sweater," a rather obvious slag of hate crimes. Vengeful preaching doesn't much become McKenna, but the simpler, more personal emotions of songs such as the solo acoustic closer "You Are Loved" play nearer to her strengths. --Roy KastenCustomer Reviews:

The second in the Hip-O imprint's series of '80s box sets, this three-CD compilation collects 42 hits from the decade of decadence. For those who want to shake their booty, they can get their freak on to Rick James, "Jump" for the Pointer Sisters, and do a little "Safety Dance" to Men Without Hats. Love new wave? Indulge in Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran, Devo, and Adam Ant. And for those who want to rock--although not too hard--there's Billy Idol, the Pretenders, Rick Springfield, and Scandal. Yes, many of these cuts are predictable, but there are some surprise entries, like Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me," Greg Kihn's "Jeopardy," Peter Schilling's "Major Tom," and Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice Theme"(!). Given this set's diverse artist roster, it's doubtful that you'll love every song; and, truthfully, the third disc is weaker than the others. But as a throwback for the music-video generation, Hit Me with Your '80s Box! makes a hip retro compilation that may finally get pop-culture snobs to admit that they liked many of these songs a lot more than they were willing to let on back in the day. --Bryan ReesmanCustomer Reviews:

Fidelity is outstanding, the tracks are well organized more or less chronologically, and the sequences in which tracks are placed is excellent. The "box" itself in which the 3 CDs come is sturdy, it is easily folded out in part or in whole to access any of the CDs quickly and easily (unlike many multi-CD offerings). Liner notes are extensive and interesting.

4 1/2 Joan Tears Off the Covers .......2006-07-18
This 1990 release is all covers, and is mostly outstanding. Highlights include her ironic, aggressive rendition of "Pretty Vacant," her voice appropriately drone-y, yet soaring over the backgrounds; "Love Hurts," in which her covers outshines the original; and risky--because the originals were done by rock icons--but surprisingly superb and enjoyable treatments of "Love Me Two Times" (the Doors), "Up from the Skies (Jimi Hendrix)," "Have You Seen the Rain (Credence Clearwater Revival)," and "Celluloid Heroes (the Kinks)" featuring Ray Davies and a very satisfying guitar solo.
The songs are muscular, energetic, and heavy on the rhythm section (bass and drums), giving a raw, propulsive feeling to most of the songs (e.g., "Tush" in which--unlike ZZ Top--she doesn't distort the pronunciation of the title, and "Dirty Deeds," more honest and less gimmicky than the original, IMHO). The only disappointing cuts were "Roadrunner USA," probably never a great song anyway, and her belabored try at "Time Has Come Today." I must admit that I've never heard a good cover of the latter song. At least Joan's take is far superior to the awful Steve Earle version. Apparently, only the Chambers Brothers can do this song right.
Parenthetically, Jett never received what she was owed for "I Love ROck and Roll," and the ensueing years are a testament to her multifaceted talent (producing, acting), and longevity (she has been both pre- and post-punk, and was a participant/role model for some in the "riot grrl" movement]). Her "Greatest Hits" LPs will give you more original Joan Jett (including the famous "Cherry Bomb," on which she "covers" the Runaways own song), but "The Hits" deserves your attention for the (mostly) great selection of songs sung by the now-iconic J. Jett. Excellent production (in New York City), nice photo of Jett on the cover, but, unfortunately, no liner notes.

Dreamy and Hypnotic; Outstanding New Wave Rock.......2005-04-18
All right, I'll admit, maybe this band from Liverpool, England, took themselves just a little too seriously in 1983, what with the silly hairstyles and odd fashion sense. Maybe they let the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental in 1982 go to their hair-do's. And maybe my 4-Star rating might be just a bit inflated, being that I've been an undying fan of AFOS since their first record, which is still today one of my all-time favorite albums. But cast all that aside, and you'll find that this is a darn good album, difficult as that may be for the casual listener to believe. While "Listen" departs from the harder-edged sound of the debut LP, it does find its own groove within a somewhat softer and more techno-fied atmosphere. Don't get me wrong; a few songs still rock pretty good, highlighting the work by amazing lead guitarist Paul Reynolds. But for the most part, the in-your-face guitar licks of the first album are relegated to the middle-ground, or background completely, while the drums and keyboards are pushed forward (could it be that the Score brothers; singer and keyboardist Mike, and drummer Ali, wanted their handiwork to overshadow that of Reynolds and bassist Frank Maudsley? Who knows.). In general, the formula works, in the context of the album as a whole. "Wishing" is brilliant, except for the annoying "buzz" sound heard on every single drum beat of the song (too bad that wasn't eliminated for the remastered release). "Nightmares" reminds one of how it felt to be eight years old and alone in the dark. "Transfer Affection" is a lovely ballad, found also on the Flock's "Best Of" CDs. "What Am I Supposed To Do?" is a fast-tempo tune, but does evoke sadness from the listener, as the song is about a painful breakup. "Electrics", "The Traveler", "Over The Border" and "It's Not Me Talking" are all New Wave-Rock oriented, while "2:30" seems to be really not much of anything; just synth effects that open with what sounds like an earthquake. Only "The Fall" causes me to hit the skip button. It's not all that bad, just a bit too slow and a bit too monotonous, even for the `Gulls. Two of the three bonus tracks are worth the price of the disc alone. The grunge-like "Quicksand" could have been a rock-radio favorite, had the group used it as a single instead of a b-side. It still stands up as one of the Flock's very best rock songs. And the live version of "I Ran" (the b-side of "It's Not Me Talking", at least in the U.S.) manages to capture the raw energy of the original studio recording. For some reason, there are two songs from the original CD and cassette releases that are missing from this reissue; "Rosenmontag" and "The Last Flight of Yuri Gagarin." Both were weird techno-flavored instrumentals, which tells me that AFOS, along with other British synth-rock bands and artists (like Gary Numan), were musical visionaries rather than One Hit Wonders. So if you're reading this you must be thinking about buying the CD. Do it, and also what the title suggests.
IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!!!.......2005-02-15
Their best........2004-11-18
In fact, I still have their first 3 TAPES--their self-titled debut, "Listen", and "The Story of a Young Heart". I think most AFOS fans would agree that "Listen" was the best of their 4 records. (The 4th album was "Dream Come True", apparently a really bad one.) They sound more mature on it with better songwriting, whether it's the dance groove of "Over the Border", the techno-punk fun of "Electrics", the dreamy vocal of "Nightmares", or the adventurous "Traveller". Flock's sound was/is so unique that one should admit that no one has sounded like them since. A song like "Wishing", with it's clashing synth/guitar/bass chords, still sounds rather exotic 20 years onward. You just don't hear such originality nowadays.
Speaking of tapes, the outside of my original tape of "Listen" says it contains 3 extra songs, "Rosenmontag", "Quicksand", and "The Last Flight of Yuri Gagarin". However, they're not on the tape itself. I have the Jive/RCA version, maybe that's why. The other tapes say Jive/Arista. Anybody know what gives? Of the 3, "Quicksand" is featured on this reissue and is actually one of their 'heavier' moments with the deepest groove of any AFOS song.
Yes, incomplete... although blissful this was re-released!.......2004-11-14
I have waited many years to hear this CD again. I originally had the cassette when first released, but after taking that damn cassette everywhere I went for many years, it faded with the scenery. I have looked for the CD version on ebay and every so often one can find one going for $80 out of some remote village half way around the globe. Now that it is rereleased and two very important tracks were omitted I will still wait for that day I can get the original CD on ebay for $50.
The song Committed was a treat for me since I only had a sound snippet memorized in my head from the one time I had heard the song back in 83. Thanks for the memories.
Anyway, get this CD. It, in my humble opinion, is a work of art. The songs are strong and good. THe Production is very much unique for the time, the reverb fills up your speakers and gives an unmistakeable sense of place while you 'listen'. I wish they would have graced the bottom end of the sound spectrum a bit on the remaster, but then it wouldn't true to how Mike Howlett produced it. I guess I can just use my stereo's EQ.
