When Tommy Emmanuel opened this new album with the fire-breathing "Cantina Senese," I suspected he was finally going to do the rip-roaring country-old-timey-Celtic-jazz CD featuring the crowd-pleasing tunes he pulls out during concerts. But it doesn't take him long to slip into the more lyrical playing that has turned up on his recent discs. And that's not a bad thing. Emmanuel is the kind of player who scares other guitarists to death with the range of his influences and the precision of his technique. You can hear both on tracks like "Gameshow Rag/Cannonball Rag," with Emmanuel doing the 1930s Django Reinhardt thing. But the album is also full of delicate reveries like "The Mystery" and "The Digger's Waltz," the latter based on the military "Taps." The only shortcoming is "Walls," with Emmanuel and his wife, Elizabeth Watkins, in a vocal duet. It's heartfelt but sentimental, and its country-pop sound is like a speed bump in the middle of the disc. But he quickly redeems this "what the hell?" moment with "Lewis & Clark," as he plays gentle cross-rhythms against a melody that unfolds like an epic tale. The Mystery isn't definitive Tommy Emmanuel, but it shows why he's not only one of the finest players, but also one of the most detailed composers for finger-style guitar. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:

Tommy Emmanuel is a veteran acoustic guitar player from Australia, where he's reputed to be a legend. He's written pop songs for Olivia Newton-John, Al Jarreau, and Sheena Easton and released skillfully played, if generic, smooth jazz albums. But it's as a solo acoustic finger-style player that Emmanuel makes jaws drop, and that's all you hear on this brilliant album. Emmanuel is an eclectic guitarist whose playing is infused with old-timey jazz on "Timberlake Road," New Age melodicism on "Those Who Wait," and a Celtic-classical tinge on "Padre." Emmanuel is capable of a dizzying array of harmonic effects, off-hand ornamentation, hammer-ons and pull-offs, and just about anything else you can do on an acoustic guitar. But while it's the technique that amazes, it's the songs that keep drawing you back with their intricate melodic invention. Perhaps because he's an unrepentant punster, Emmanuel is able to create just enough distance, with a cocked sideways glance, to keep his music on the right side of the line between sentimental and sublime. --John DilibertoAlbum Description

Endless Road.......2007-06-18
Some favorites are "Bella Soave" where Tommy slips in contrasty chord transitions, "Angelina" - whose universal likability is confirmed by several guitarists doing it on YouTube, and "Struttin," which creates a 20s imagery.
A musical treasure, in my opinion.

Dear Future Tommy Emmanuel Fan.......2007-01-17
This is almost a totally solo album, with the exception of backup vocals on "I Still Can't Say Goodbye". Several of the songs follow the fingerstyle of Chet Atkins, and others follow the style of Merle Travis. Highlights include: "(The Man With The) Green Thumb", "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" (this arrangement alone is worth the price of the album), as well as the title track "Endless Road".
If you're a long time Tommy Emmanuel fan and you don't yet have this album, don't hesitate to get it. It continues Tommy's very high standard for acoustic guitar music. If you're not a Tommy Emmanuel fan yet, but you've loved the guitar music of Chet Atkins and Merle Travis, then this album is definitely for you. If you're new to acoustic guitar music altogether, then this is still a good place to start. I recommend this album as well as Tommy's new album "The Mystery". Buy both of them, and if you're not hooked, then, to coin a phrase, check your pulse.

A veteran of long years on the Boston club scene and a stint as sideman to former J. Geils Band frontman Peter Wolf, guitarist Johnny A. originally self-released this masterful, tasteful solo record to much local acclaim, and then guitar ace Steve Vai added the musician to the roster of his label. Proving that the term "guitar god" has too often been misapplied in the post-Van Halen era of diddly-squeak school of soloing, Johnny A. draws on a more classic pantheon of American fret deity for inspiration, including Chet Atkins, Scotty Moore, James Burton, Nokie Edwards, and Wes Montgomery. And like the late Danny Gatton (whom the musician's fiery solos recall), Johnny's years as a sideman have taught him the importance of space and dynamics. The smoky, moody title track sets the tone. While his choice of covers (the Beatles' "Yes It Is," Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman," and the Ventures' signature "Walk, Don't Run") underscore his restraint, the guitarist proves his overdrive can burn with the best of them on "Two Wheel Horse," "In the Wind," and the rockabilly kicker "Up in the Attic." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Buy This CD.......2006-11-10
Johnny A, by his own admission, has had a long and tortuous love affair with his guitar; and like any long-term affair where each partner begins to assume characteristics and traits of the other, Johnny A has melded himself with his guitar to the extent that it has become an extension of his body, his soul, his mind. He has become one with his music. This man can flat out play guitar.
I can't listen to this CD without dancing...I have to move, it's that evocative. And it is sooooooo smooth and sweet, like ear candy or soul candy. Definitely my favorite CD, still, after a year and a half. If you love good guitar and if you love to move and be moved, this CD is just what you need.

Although He's a Relative Unknown, Johnny A's Album Has A Stellar Quality About It.......2006-01-08
I like to say that there are really only two kinds of music---Good music and BAD music. Johnny A's music is so damn good, it's truly a crime that more people don't know about it. Just listen to some of the horible dreck that gets played 24-7 on our American airwaves. No wonder we're in such sad shape!
Johnny A's music appeals to a wide variety of people. I've given at least ten of his albums to friends and every one of them has thanked me profusely.
Too many people are missing out on a delicious, sweetly smokin' guitar instrumental album that can be listened to repeatedly without a hint of boredom.
My good friend Kirk from Malibu turned me onto J.A. about two years ago---he truly gave me a gift that I will treasure for the rest of my life. It's really THAT good!

Texas guitar prodigy Eric Johnson returns to recording after a near-decade absence with a lush, typically restrained collection that eschews flash for fluid cool. Arranging the album's 16 songs into a musical triptych whose sections are labeled "Prelude," "Courante" and "Allemande," Johnson aims at creating a landscape of shifting moods that's as subtle as it is mature. The guitarist's trademark lyrical style is immediately showcased on the title track, "Summer Jam" and the stately fallen astronaut tribute, "Columbia." The first section is also energized by the funked-up "Good to Me," before Johnson turns to fare that's variously more impressionistic (the instrumental "Sea Secret"), conscience-driven (the pop-savvy ballad "Sad Legacy") and smooth-groove, r&b sultry ("From My Heart"). The infectious finger-pickin' "Tribute to Jerry Reed" segues into a final act that includes the romance of "Your Sweet Eyes" (with guest Shawn Colvin adding her distinctive harmonies), "Hesistant"'s tasteful Wes Montgomery-isms and the 70's charged, acid-jazz of "Magnetized." His fusion-lite cover of Dylan's "My Back Pages" and saccharine "Sunnaround You" withstanding, it's another fine tribute to Johnson's tasteful, often introspective muse. -- Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Another great CD from a brilliant guitarist.......2006-10-25
'Sad Legacy' and 'From My Heart' are both great introspective songs. 'Sad Legacy' builds a sense of urgency and 'From My Heart' has a mellower, R&B feel and nice jazzy runs. These two are probably my favorites off the album.
The last movement, 'Allemande' starts off with a nice old-school style jazzy number, 'Hesistant'. 'Magnetized' gets things rocking again, before a very good atmospheric classical guitar piece, 'Ciel' ends the ride.
Eric plays an wide variety of styles on this release and manages to keep it all together as one cohesive piece, with one small exception. Tribute to Jerry Reed, while a nice bit of picking doesn't fit on this CD for me, especially after the sitar on 'Cruise The Nile'.
I'd recommend this CD to anyone who enjoyed Ah Via Musicom or Venus Isle. Or, if you aren't familiar with Eric johnson already, then do yourself a favor and pick up a CD. This one is as good as any of his studio albums to start off with.

1. Bloom
4. Good to Me
7. Sea Secret
8. Sad Legacy
10. Cruise the Nile

9. From My Heart
Not to knock the other songs, but this is the 27 minute CD I like. Perfect in the summer. I feel sorry for people who don't hear Bloom.
Getting weaker with age...EJ needs to practice.......2006-07-19
EJ, take it from one of your biggest fans who owns all of your music...if you come out with another album, don't use samples because you think that they will help you modernize the music or "relate" to the kids. Go into the woodshed and seriously, build a chair. You need to practice and learn something new if you're going to do something original ever again. Otherwise, each and every album that you put out is going to sound the same as old ones...like this one does.
Still, much respect. You are a great master of the instrument but, PRACTICE!
a musical garden.......2006-07-10
Eric Johnson Delivers.......2006-07-09
What I love about EJ is that first he is always very diverse with his songs. They have a wide range of feel and texture that very few musicians have.
Secondly his guitar playing is amazing. His guitar's tone is perfect for each song. Be it the signature EJ sound in Columbia, the definite twang in Tribute to Jerry Reed, the Eastern feel in Cruise the Nile or the stirring chimes in Your Sweet Eyes. And he is able to make the guitar pieces important, yet never overbearing.
This is definitely an album that gets maximum play on my iPod...

The Tone King Strikes Again!.......2007-07-02
The first track, "Deliver Us," certainly lets the listener know what kind of music he or she is in store for. The rockin' hook combined with the beautiful tone Andy has come to be known for really sets a great mood! The solo passage is also very tastefully done and I give Mr. Timmons credit for not going over the top by shredding the whole time; the man truly knows that phrasing and sequencing are the key to a great guitar solo.
With the title track, Andy shows us his roots in blues, very melodically so I might add. Not only does the guy have great scorching high gain electric tone but his softer bluesy tone is just to die for! The songwriting is again tremendous and very melodic; he puts so much emotion in his work.
Speaking of emotion, Andy displays a great deal of it in his ode to the 9/11 tragedy: "Gone." From the beginning of the song it is obvious to tell from the minor chords just how much emotion he will be putting forth; a hauntingly beautiful elegy.
Well, I hope I have helped convinced you to buy this album because it is really great and I promise you won't regret it. If you're a fan of great guitar tone and songwriting then you will enjoy this. It's not as good as his previous attempt, so if you haven't purchased that one yet I would highly reccomend getting "That Was Then, This is Now" before this album.
Great Instrumental Rock CD.......2007-05-03
straight-up rock instrumental album .......2007-02-15
"Deliver Us" focuses on melodic guitar runs and tight rhythms. "Ghost of You" starts of tame and subdued, but drives up the distortion at various intervals. There's nothing too complicated on "Resolution," just a simple down tempo progressive accented by organ tones. "Redemption" barrels along with lots of speed and energy, and displays some of Timmons' most technical and intricate abilities. "Lydia" is an emotional instrumental ballad. Emotions continue to remain somber on the moving track "Gone (9/11/01)." Timmons channels his Danger Danger days on the over-the-top rocker "Move On."
The Bad
Nothing notable
The Verdict
Resolution is a straight-up rock instrumental album with plenty of guitar flash and flare, tight rhythms, and emotional ballad pieces.
SIMPLEY AWSOME.......2007-02-12
Drown yourself in electric guitar virtuoso.......2007-02-05
I'll just quickly touch on some songs I enjoyed from this album. The album opens up with "Headed for the Ditch", a song that has its blues parts but ultimately has some really fast licks. "Deliver us" has a lot of that sound that I remember from Eric Johnson and uses a variety of tones that make the guitar truly sing to the listener. "Ghost of you" has a great groove to it and coupled with some rapid fretwork that hits a lot of high notes, the song dives down at times into a darker, swamp boogie feel. "Resolution" is an energized and magical track that is slow in its execution but still powerful on delivery.
If you are looking for an instrumental type album that is not just fifty minutes of a guy playing notes as fast as he can, then the Andy Timmons Band is where it is. There is enough diversity in sound and rhythm on this CD to have something for everyone to like. I am extremely impressed with Timmons work and look forward to listening to more of his music. Eleven tracks in all, Resolution is an astounding instrumental album.

I had never heard of this guy until I was browsing amazon, and came across this debut album by Johnny Hiland.
I'm more of a Clapton, blues baby boomer, but I like, and appreciate great guitar playing of all types, and there is plenty of that here.
This guy can sound like Eric Johnson at times, and then he will play real county licks that are as good, or better than anything I've ever heard.
When I sampled the tunes online I was intrigued.
After listening the to whole cd I was very impressed, and now after listening to it many times, I find more and more to like about it.

A Hidden Gem... in spots........2007-03-08
Compliments: 1. Petrucci on "Bite of the Mosquito" is just plain a jaw-on-the-floor extravaganza of speed/alternate picking in vein of Flight of the Bumblebee... when you see the title and ponder the possibilities, you might wonder what Petrucci is capable of... and even with expectations very high, he still proceeds to blow you away. I can't believe nobody has singled this song out yet. Sure, it's "just shredding," but if you play guitar, then give it a listen, and then find the tab, and then add it to your practice regimen: the ultimate exercise in speed/alternate pciking AND it sounds great, unlike your usual chromatic practice runs. 2. "In the Moment" and "Black Ice" seem particularly well put together and are kind of what I expected all along.
If you like shred, get it for the last track... and if you like the moodier aspects of DT and get into the music as much as the mastery, you'll like it even more than I did.
