The Better of the two.......2006-06-03
I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.
Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03
This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.
A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.
Same as 'Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800'.......2004-02-21
Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

Northern Period Counterpoint to "Sacred Harp".......2006-10-05
A beautiful collection of "low-church" hymns in a folk style, but from the North. Some similarities to Sacred Harp-style shape-note singing, mostly found in the South, but from New England and largely taken from mid-19th Century period sources. Extremely well-performed and haunting, these songs will be running through your head for weeks after your mega-church's latest electric guitar extravaganza fades away.
Nearly Lost Heritage.......2000-08-09
I am appreciative of any CD, such as this one, that brings the sounds of traditional hymns to modern ears. This CD includes familiar gospel with not so familiar hymns that whisper of a rich heritage nearly lost in the maze o modern choruses. Many of these modern songs lack the genuine passion found in the traditional songs found on this CD. I recommend this CD to those who are interested in cultural history as well as in beautiful hymn texts.

Duplicate of 'Early American Choral Music, Vol. 2'.......2004-02-21
Please note this CD is identical to another His Majestie's Clerkes CD, "Early American Choral Music, Vol. 2 (Anglo-American Psalmody: 1550-1800)" but with a different cover and name! I bought both and was irritated to discover this. The other version is cheaper, so I would suggest getting that one.
Great recording reissued.......2003-03-22
This is great choral singing, and if you missed it in this incarnation, all is not lost. It has been reissued by Harmonia Mundi's budget label, Classical Express as "Early American Choral Music vol 2 Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800". Texts of the songs aren't in the booklet but can be downloaded from the label's website.

Customer Reviews:
Eyal is an awesome guitarist.......2006-03-26
Eyal's music is sensational. His works are emotive, evocative, and beautifully composed.
This album brings out the beauty of Eyal's personality. He is an amazing composer that speaks eloquently through his music.
Awesome!.......2006-02-03
I am not the type to write an indepth review for an album track by track but I will say that i honestly enjoyed this CD! It has some great guitar playing and the overall effect you get from the album is nothing but unique energy. This is one you should check out if you're into real musicians who play interesting creative pieces.
Edom Review from the USC Advocate.......2005-11-18
The one sheet accompanying the copy of Edom by Eyal Maoz instructs confused record stores to file the CD under "Jazz, Rock, World, Jam, Radical Jewish Music" - this last being a genre invented by John Zorn for a series of releases on his Tzadik label. Guitarist Eyal Maoz is from Israel but has been living in New York since 1999, and the music certainly acknowledges his roots. Several songs have klezmer-like melodies, and organist John Medeski's solos on these tracks emphasize that sound. Sometimes this doesn't work. The opening track "Innocence" adds a surf-rock resonance to its Jewish-sounding melody and the result comes across as empty pastiche to me, doing justice to neither genre. Songs like "Lost," do it right, recalling a more rock-based version of Zorn's band Masada.
The free sections scattered throughout several songs are less likely to appeal to jam band fans, but to me they are some of the most compelling pieces on this CD. Maoz creates fascinating scrapey soundscapes, Medeski uses the slides and pedals of his Hammond B3 to eerie effect, and the rest of the band knows what they're doing, too. On "Deep," an introduction in free time gives way to a mellow but apprehensive Middle Eastern melody, resulting in the most successful fusion of Maoz's various influences on the album.
Fans of Masada and Medeski Martin & Wood's more adventurous music will find much to enjoy here, as the band is tight and plays well together. Another well-produced CD from Tzadik and hopefully not the last word from Eyal Maoz.

A true musical journy.......2005-11-09
In 2 words. Amazing effort. Make that 3. Really amazing effort.
This album really shows true musicianship, Very solid and diverse. The band is doing great job supporting outstanding creative guitar work by Maoz. As a Prog Rock fan, I like to be challenged by the music. In that respect, Edom project makes you think.
If you are into exploring new horizens this CD is a must. Maoz spiral into new territoy away from old school Jazz as we know it.
Really out there........2005-11-09
The record starts with a tamed Jewish sounding song - in the tradition of the Tzadik Jewish music. However, as the tracks progress the genre becomes less recognizable. A strong collaboration of Maoz's wailing guitar and the blasting organ of Medeski is apparent (for me it was a rare opprotunity to hear Medeski in a different setting than his beloved MMW). Eyal appears to be a great guitarist and composer with his powerful solos and solid compositions. All in all it's a delightful rock-world music ensemble, that has this Jewish tinge that is very Tzadik, and at times is really out there. Hope for more to come. Highly recommended.
