About the Artist
Spellbound - 2005 Biography

Los Angeles, California - SPELLBOUND was formed by two songwriters / producers sharing a common love of Funk, Latin, Psychedelic, & Electronic music. Paul Thomas & Bobby Moon were early purveyors of electronic dance music in L.A., recording & performing with various line-ups since their formative years. This fiercely independent act has been producing CDs for their own Selfish Recordings label, since their self-titled debut "Spellbound" CD in 1996 (which includes the Latin-tinged favorite "Good Company"). 1999 marked the release of the first nationally distributed disc, "Funqueros," for this multi-cultural "Funk n' Latin groove" band. The critics were unanimous in their praise of the disc, since newspaper Campus Circle first hailed it as "a jewel of magnanimous proportions." The CD, fueled by a guest appearance from L.A. salsero Johnny Polanco, and a share of radio airplay on R&B, Latin & Tropical stations, helped push SPELLBOUND to a new level. "The Crown" from this disc &! featuring the debut of Spellbound singer Sonora could be heard regularly on the local (yet highly influential) "Café L.A." on station KCRW (89.9fm). Also, during winter '99/'00, diners at Rubio’s restaurant likely heard the song "El Tropico," which was served up daily over the sound system.Almost 2 years after "Funqueros," SPELLBOUND's "Respete El Pasado / Respect The Past" was released in January of 2001. The CD, an original tribute to their musical influences of the past, contains liner notes by award winning world music author & dj Tom Schnabel. It also features some of the best musicians from both coasts including saxophone legend Plas Johnson (The Pink Panther) and a special appearance by Question Mark (of "96 Tears" fame). A song from the disc "Voy A Cantar," was released in advance on MP3.Com reaching the Top Ten within a day. The same song also reached #12 on Miami's long-standing WDNA (88.9fm). The CD continues to receive international critical rave reviews from English, Spanish & Asian publications & radio. In 2002, after a groundbreaking opening show at The Hollywood Bowl in July, their next 13-song CD, "Tropicalifornia" was released on October 8th, 2002. "Tropicalifornia" continues where "Respete El Pasado" left off musically, but with the spotlight on taking the listener on a trip to the tropical side of California! It maintains most of the same cast from the last album including Artie Webb on flute, Mike Daigeau on trombone, plus new additions Robertito Melendez on congas & Robert Anthony Gil, Jr. on woodwinds. "Tropicalifornia" made one of the Editor's Picks for 2002's Top 10 Best CDs in Latin Beat Magazine. The first track off this CD "Quien Llamo Pa' Rumba?" has been added to playlists in both Latin & college genre stations around the country & has continued to generate interest, as well as, more SPELLBOUND fans throughout 2003. Also, Paul released his first all instrumental solo album in July, 2003. Simply titled "PABLO," this CD is a unique, psychedelic world-fusion experience produced by both "the boys."

2004 was another busy & active year for SPELLBOUND with CDs, shows and radio interviews. A 12-song Spellbound Sampler: "Assorted Spanglish Favorites" was released & available now on CD, with the song "Don't Care Anymore" reaching the top ten on Tampa Bay's respected WMNF fm. Bobby & Paul were also interviewed on The Fabulous 570 (570am) as part of the Best of L.A. bands for the show "Viva the Rhythm." Currently another SPELLBOUND chapter has begun with an upcoming 10-song CD "Encantos" set for release this summer (2005). This all new CD will feature some very special guest stars, including L.A.’s Cuban songstress Candi Sosa & Asdru Sierra from the popular band Ozomatli! So stay tuned in for more SPELLBOUND...

Product Description
"Just keep going. Just keep going. That’s been our motto for the 21st century" says Spellbound’s co-founder and multi-instrumentalist Paul Thomas, and keep going they have. The Los Angeles-based multi-cultural Latin Funk outfit has just released their latest and possibly greatest CD "Encantos"on Selfish Recordings. Going the independent route for the past 15 years, Spellbound has earned critical accolades, and has developed a hard-won group of admirers. Despite the lack of corporate backing, the dearth of dinero, and the necessity of wearing many hats, Thomas and vocalist/co-founder Bobby Moon have soldiered on commendably to the beat of their own drum programming.

"We would like to be able to tour and reach out to more people, and haven’t been able to," they concede, "but we’re proud that we haven’t sold our souls. And we’ve avoided many of the classic band pitfalls." With the release of "Encantos" Spellbound’s star may rise up a few more notches. The 10 tracks on this CD shine brighter than ever before thanks to major improvements in the recording, mixing and mastering process this time around. From the opening tune "No Mas Casadas," a cautionary, yet hilarious tune sung in Spanglish, to the epic final track ("So Close, So Far"), this CD refines and re-defines the Spellbound sound: euphoric dance grooves, tropical rhythms, male and female vocals, funky guitars, exotic instruments, and a heap of soul.

In addition to principal songwriters Thomas and Moon, Spellbound includes long-time members Mike Daigeau on trombone and vocalist Sonora, whose expanded contributions were vital to this recording. There are the obligatory guests such as Johnny Polanco and flutist Art Webb, and also new invited artists including Ozomatli’s Asdru Sierra, and Cuban diva Candi Sosa. The real stars are the songs, though, and the love and time put into these tracks are obvious. They’re all new, but they seem to fit just like a favorite pair of old blue jeans. That was the aim. Very Los Angeles. Very Global. Very Sunny. Muy Caliente. "Las Lavanderas" is Bobby’s poetic ode to the secret lives of washerwomen. "Desde Aqui" sounds like classic Spellbound. "Highway to Highlife" scintillates with its joyous African undercurrent. There are even two cover tunes! First there’s "La Lupe Medley," a groundbreaking medley of two songs originally recorded by legendary vocalist La Lupe. Guest vocalist Candi Sosa brings this track from a slow-burning torch to a fiery climax. Then, "(Baila) Mi Salsa," a Latin rocker originally performed by 1980's L.A. band Crocodile Tears, is given the Spellbound treatment.

"Encantos" will keep you under the spell of Spellbound. So just keep going...or grooving.
