Three discs into her acclaimed solo career, it's a no-brainer that the Brazilian pop charms of Bebel Gilberto will conjure a slew of beach-inspired adjectives. "Refreshing," "wind-swept" and "sun-kissed" spring to mind. Momento continues Gilberto's trend of crafting sultry scenes of afternoon delight via tunes that both adhere to traditions and sound ultra-modern. But she also mixes things up a bit in the process. Gilberto's sensual delivery--featured here in English and in Portuguese--hovers in and around each song, more an extension of the rhythms than the showpiece. Make no mistake, though: Gilberto's vocal work is a thing of beauty. She again blends bossa nova, samba, pop and electronica flourishes, but no one genre overpowers any other. Liliting guitars give way to pulsing percussion and horns, which crash against loops and samples. Gilberto coos amid the catchy club flavor of "Bring Back the Love," and the moonlit "Close to You" recalls Sade. The daughter of Brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto even tackles Cole Porter's "Night and Day," recasting it as a hushed moment of bossa loveliness. And the title track is a collage of sonic secrets and memories. Perfect for a patio brunch--or an evening under the stars. --Joey Guerra

4 out of 5 stars It's a good album........2007-07-03

It's a good album and there are some very beautiful pieces of music on here. 'Azul' , 'Cade Voce', 'Night and Day' , and 'Close To You' are the standouts and those songs alone make this album worth the price of admission. They are undeniably gorgeous songs and it'd be hard for anyone to find fault in those songs. Unfortunately, the rest of the tracks are not as awe-inspiring as the above mentioned songs and even though music is obviously subjective, I think most people will agree that there are more "skippable" songs than we'd like on a Bebel Gilberto album. Overall, this album is very solid compared to alot of what's out there, it's just that, like all good artists, we hold Bebel to a higher standard (such is the bane of all good artists).

5 out of 5 stars Summer Sundays...........2007-06-27

Love this! It was fresh and breezy, perfect cooking music, and really nice to have playing during dinner(outside is best). Can't imagine why it wouldn't be great at a cocktail party.

4 out of 5 stars Bebel Gilberto's Momento is sure to please!.......2007-06-27

Bebel Gilberto's new release is not her best...BUT....it is sure to please all her fans. "Bring Back the Love" has the chance of making a lot of air play while songs like the standard "Night and Day" and "Azul" are great chill out songs to relax with.

5 out of 5 stars Babel.......2007-06-27

This is an great mix of Brazilian tunes mixed with American songs from the 40's with the Babel Gilberto touch.

3 out of 5 stars Losing Momentum?.......2007-06-27

Reminiscent of Astrud's "It Might As Well Be Spring," Momento slides through the diary entries of Bebel's life, with a lack luster effect, unmatching the energy found within Tanto Tempo. This having been said, I shall have to say that I nonetheless enjoyed Momento, and reserve this album for that special occasion wherein I seek this special space, which only Bebel can create for me. You know, when you throw some classical music on to do some serious writing or study, well, Momento has its own relation, to each and their own. It will be well enjoyed and find a warm place within your heat. Bebel, muita obrigado for these most soothing tracks. Beijos...

Guitarist Charlie Byrd was invited to travel and play in Brazil during a cultural goodwill tour sponsored by the Kennedy administration in 1961. He was completely enamoured by the music, and when he returned, he headed straight for the recording studio to make the now classic Jazz Samba. Collaborating with Stan Getz on tenor sax and backed by a band that included Gene Byrd (bass, guitar), Keter Betts (bass), and Buddy Deppenschmidt and Bill Reichenbach (drums), Byrd forged a new and brilliant sound. American record companies were to churn out hundreds of watered bossa-pop albums that have since given the style its lounge-addled image, but this album stands as a tribute to the vitality and adaptability of jazz. --Louis Gibson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bossa nova music that dips, swings, boasts fine harmonic structures--and an infectious rhythmic pulse !!!.......2007-06-19

Bossa nova music was created largely by Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto in the late 1950s and early 1960s. When Charlie Byrd and his trio heard it, they wanted to make a bossa nova album of their own. The result is this wonderful CD.

The CD track set opens with an extended version of "Desafinado." The guitar gets plenty of air time in bossa nova music; and Charlie Byrd's guitar solo stuns me with its beauty and sensitivity. "Desafinado" plays with a few key changes to enhance the quality of the number; and the percussion works very well, too.

"Samba Dees Days" picks up the tempo considerably; and this ought to brighten any party you play this at! Stan Getz plays tenor sax to perfection; and Buddy Deppenschmidt along with Bill Reichenbach play the drums very, very well. "Samba Triste" is the only truly mournful sounding samba on this album; the minor keys work very well as Stan's melancholy solo enhances the forlorn flavor to "Samba Triste."

"Samba De Uma Nota Só (One Note Samba)" exudes elegance and style; when you listen to this track the fusion of jazz and samba is very evident. "E Luxo Só" reverts to a faster tempo that really makes you want to get up and dance wherever you are; and "Bahia (Baía)" concludes the album with a silky elegance that is singularly beautiful.

There is one extra number. The bonus track is the 45 rpm issue of "Desafinado." Naturally, the shorter version of this number doesn't provide us with the luxurious meanderings of the full length track. Nevertheless, it interests the listener to hear what the band chose to include--and exclude--when, under time constraints, they had to deliver the number fast yet with all the brightness of the full rendition. You won't be disappointed.

The liner notes include the original liner notes by Dom Cerulli; and there are great black and white photos of the band members playing. John Litweiler contributes an informative essay about the creation of the album as well. The quality of the sound is excellent.

I highly recommend this CD for any fan of bossa nova music; and people who enjoy jazz with a samba twist will cherish this one for ages to come.

5 out of 5 stars Old School.......2007-01-17

This CD was all I expected and more. It was soothing without being muzac, and there was plenty of latin for spice. I was raised with the old school style of jazz and this really fit the bill!

5 out of 5 stars I'd give it 6 stars if I could!!!.......2006-09-16

Stan Getz is in this sax player's opinion the best jazz saxophone player that has ever been recorded. His sense of melody is superb. He hides his amazing technical prowess, makes it sound effortless, and never gets in the way of the melody. Nobody else even came close to his melodic improvisations.

I've worn out a few Jazz Samba LPs and now own it on CD. It's a timeless classic. It has perhaps the definitive version of "One Note Samba" on it. "Desifinado" "Bahia", "O Pato" also shine very brightly. In fact, there are no tracks on this CD that are less than superb.

Stan played a lot of different jazz styles, from Cool School to Post Bop to Bossa Nova. And although he is not from Brasil, Antonio Carlos Jobim wrote a Bossa tune honoring him because his "voice" fit the mood so perfectly. Of all the things Stan did a good job on, Bossa was perhaps his forte. And this album along with "Jazz Samba Encore" are two of his best Bossa albums ever.

I'd give it 6 stars in a 1 to 5 star rating system. It's a "desert island" disk.

A must piece of work in the latin genre to include in your collection; I've heard bits and pieces of these tracks throughout my life; it's about time I added all of them to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Contrary to Mr. Gibson's jottings........2006-06-03

According to information readily available in the CD booklet, Jazz Samba was "Recorded in Pierce Hall, All Souls Unitarian Church, Washington, D.C., February 13, 1962." Not in a studio! That accounts for the warmth of the recording. It remains the standard against which all else is measured.

After purchasing many compilations I began to fear that I would never again hear a cd as good as my first (Siddharta Vol. 1) but this cd woke me up. Some songs are better than others. "Siempre Me Quedará" for example is one of the best songs I've heard in months and all are consistantly good except for one song called "Carmela" which sounds like something my grandparents would dance to.
When I realised that Putumayo made many discs with many different themes without sticking to 1 theme I assumed it would be commercial and weak, but the disc outdoes most buddha bar or hotel costes compilations!
A great Listen, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Speak Spanish or Not, This CD is Great.......2007-04-10

I am a Spanish student and am nearly fluent. It's fun to listen to this CD and know what they're saying, but even if you can't speak a word of Spanish, this CD will retain a special place on your shelf (or a permanent place in your CD player). The music varies from tangoes to salsas to mambos. I especially enjoy listening to this CD in my car because... it's just plain fun to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and Sexie.......2007-03-13

All the cuts offer a tasty bite of Latin flavor. Latin Jazz and Euro fusion. Great listening music or as a back drop to accent a dinner party. The music is captivating, enchanting, and just a pleasure to listen. This is the kind of music that goes great with a sunset, wine, and a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Learn Spanish and groove at the same time: Latin Lounge.......2007-01-04

I just bought this CD at the airport in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was playing over the loudspeaker in the gift shop and I was hooked. Happy to help the local economy but I could have saved some $ if I had bought it on amazon. This is an amazing CD. Not only is the music great, but you can also improve your Spanish by listening to the lyrics. If you like groovy Latin music, buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars Putumayo.......2006-12-15

PUTUMAYO is awesome music, a real eye opener. Similar in many ways to the BUDDHA BAR approach but different flavour.

Anyone who enjoys this cd may want to try MANU CHAO (proxima estacion ... ESPERANZA) for another trully great Latin American music.

This is definitely one of the easiest CD's to pop in, along with Nuevo Latino .... anytime anywhere ... just makes you enjoy the moment so much more.

As you might expect, Timeless isn't your parents' Sergio Mendes. Take "Mais Que Nada," the opener from that topselling staple of post-60s, post-bossa, near-kitsch Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66: Greatest Hits. Here it's no simple, slinky groove. The Black-Eyed Peas are along for the bumpin' ride. What it amounts to is the same intercultural collision that happened when bossa nova met jazz and pop via Stan Getz's tenor sax, except here the meeting is between the lounge and, presumably, the street. John Legend and India.Arie keep the session on a downtempo, neo Brazilian vibe on "Please Baby Don't" and the title track (respectively). Once those are tunes end, though, it's back to the bump and the beats and the irresistible party vibe of the set. Don't fret, though, as the Peas keep things light enough to trigger innocent headbobs and chilled out dance steps. Just as you might hear Timeless and agree that it ain't your parents' Sergio, your parents can also hear will.i.am's and the Peas's pivotal roles and say that it's not their kids' Black-Eyed Peas, either --Andrew Bartlett

Description

Timeless is the magnificent new album by the legendary Sergio Mendes. Produced by and featuring Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, this album is a wholly original synthesis of music from the man who--40 years ago--brought Brazil 66 and "Mas Que Nada" to the world. Timeless beautifully blends the urban culture of Brazil, samba and bossa nova with the urban culture of America, hip hop and rap, the results of which are truly spectacular.

Putting together the project, Will and Sergio, of course, brought in the Black Eyed Peas. They also recruited some of the biggest urban-pop artists of the last several decades, each a Sergio fan, to contribute to various tracks. Featured artists include Erykah Badu, Justin Timberlake, India.Arie, Q-Tip, John Legend, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, and members of the Roots and Jurassic 5.

4 out of 5 stars Street meets the bossa beat---4.5 stars.......2007-07-02

I didn't like Sergio growing up in the day, I was a Motown fan and couldn't get down with bossa nova or latin beats. "Timeless" manages to keep some of the sound of the old Brazil 66 and add some new flavor via Stevie Wonder who was one of my faves back then. Of course, they've brought in John Legend with some new soul. Then, they top that off by bringing in the Black Eyed Peas, who I'd never have thought of, and the concept just works.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!.......2007-05-16

This album is a classic! My kids actually introduced me to the album. I'm a Sergio Mendes fan from way back. Buy it!!!

5 out of 5 stars I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-10

I am a 52 y/o old fart but once was a cool college d.j. I am not a big rap/hip-hop fan but it sounds fantastic combined with a latin groove. When I was spinning LP's in the late 70's, we thought Sergio Mendes had "sold-out" to pop. What did we know? His music, whether "roots" or "pop" is absolutely beautiful. I admire the creativity of the artists who have made the Timeless CD worthy of its title.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastico!! Eu amo Brasil!.......2007-05-08

This album is off the hook! I never knew this hidden gem was so good. It is amazing what Will.I.Am and Sergio did. There are so many songs that are my favs such as Mas Que Nada, The Frog, that Samba Song, and etc. There is a great compilation of rap, samba, bossa nova, singing, and etc. Black Eye Peas, Q-Tip, Black Thought (Roots), John Legend, and etc. makes this a wonderful compilation and celeration of the beautiful Brazilian culture.

My wife is Brazilian and we love the album so much we even played some of it at our wedding reception. This album should be selling a lot more and deserve worldwide acclaim. Sergio Mendes "Timeless" is truly the best kept secret...you gotta listen to this!

5 out of 5 stars An aptly-titled album from a timeless artist.......2007-03-17

Mendes's "Fool on the Hill" was one of the first albums that this then fifteen-year-old bought with his allowance. Thus began an almost forty-year love affair with the Brazilian's sound. One can't imagine my excitement when I learned of the release of "Timeless," his first album of new music in over a decade.

And what an album it is!!! The disc is an outstanding blend of the old and the new, with cuts to satisfy the contemporary crowd as well as those of us with nostalgia of the soul.

Though the album features guest performances from the likes of Justin Timberlake to Jill Scott to John Legend, the best cuts are those that harkens back to the cool 1960's, adding a new dimension with rap and modern rhythms. The revisit of "Mais Que Nada," "Berimbau/Consolacao" (featuring vocals by Gracinha Leporace and a killer hamonica solo from Stevie Wonder), "Bananeira," the title cut (with India.Arie on vocals), "Lamento (No Morro)," "Yes, Yes Y'All," and "Samba Da Bencao," are thrilling in every way and certain to appeal to an international audience.

Bravo for Mendes and, hopefully, with the utilization of modern stars, he will reach a young audience that will discover one of music's legendary innovators.

5 out of 5 stars Great Brazilian Music.......2007-05-20

This CD provides you with some great tunes; danceable, easy to the ears, romantic and very sensual. The songs take me away and place me in the heart of Brazil; the land of high soaring spirits. Would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-05-14

This is probably my favorite album of all time. I purchased it about 8 years ago and listen to it regularly. Can't understand a single lyric from it (a few excepted) but it remains one of the best I own. It is soulful, enchanting, exciting, and mysterious all at once.

If you are in the mood for something different that will grow on you, try this one. You won't regret it. I promise.

For something similar and equally intoxicating, try Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave" or "The Composer of Desafinado, Plays". Both fantastic choices.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova.......2007-03-29

I enjoy Bossa Nova, beautiful music I have enjoyed all the cd's, I have purchased.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova Brasil.......2006-10-29

I play this CD frequently. Love the choices of artists and songs. Shows off the legacy of some of the artists as well. Would recommend it to the many fans of Bossa Nova and Brazilian music in general.

4 out of 5 stars Good Bossa Nova and MPB.......2004-04-13

I picked this up several years ago, and what a great disc this is. It's got some old classics on it and some pretty rare tracks too. At the time I picked it up, this was actually a series. There is another cd titled: "Samba Brasil" that has a similar cover, but is white and green.

The artists on this are fantastic. From Gal Costa do Vinicius De Moraes, you're taken on a real trip through some of the classics in Brazilian music. Perhaps most interesting and stellar of which is the Elis Regina only vocal of Waters of March. It has such an innocent sound! Carlos Lyra's "Influencia Do Jazz" will take you to a beach in the late 60's, and Baden Powell's Consolacao has that rich acoustic sound I've grown up with and love. And check out Joao Gilberto's song here along with Gal Costa's tracks... She's a VERY underrated singer IMO. But this CD isn't without fault. The sound quality can be suspect on some tracks, and a song or two weren't what I would have selected from the musicians here. (You can find "Aguas De Beber" and "Girl from Ipanema" on virtually every compilation.

Still I would have to recommend this. It's not that expensive, and out of most of the Bossa Nova/MPB samplers, this is one of the better ones IMO. For the make of Samba De Bencao, Elis Regina, Baden Powell, Tamba Trio (who did the wildly successful take of "Mas Que Nada" that featured in the 1998 World Cup commercial with Brazilian footballers in an airport) and the others... good tunes. Also check out Nova Bossa Nova - a companion piece to "Red Hot & Rio". There is some overlap, but the other version of Baden Powell's cut on that comp is better than this one IMO. Maybe also check out Bossa Nova Gold, a two disc set of MPB and Bossa Nova.

This eclectic compilation shows the syncopated and seductive evolution of the African-derived Brazilian samba and its offspring, the bossa nova. The CD features a new-wave series of moods and grooves tailor-made for the 21st century. There's angel-voiced Rosa Passos and her silky version of the Ary Barroso/Luiz Peixoto song "E Luxo So." Guitarist-vocalist Márcio Faraco's remake of Noel Rosa's samba-canção "Feitiço da Vila" is just as tasteful. The elegant, classically tinged Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, led by cellist Jacques Morelenbaum, skillfully mixes Ravel-like harmonies with Afro-Brazilian beats on "Eu e o Meu Amor/Lamento No Morro" from the film Black Orpheus. The London-based group Da Lata swings the sacred syncopations of "Cores" in a club-friendly, secular rendition. And the talented Moreno Veloso, son of the great Caetano Veloso, turns in an intimate and atmospheric version of Olodum's "Deusa do Amor" (Goddess of Love). These tracks show that the bossa nova and the samba can still give us new musical surprises. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars love it!.......2007-07-14

i use this cd in my pilates classes and inevitably someone ALWAYS asks me what it is. it is great music to listen to while relaxing, exercising, cleaning the house, having a dinner party, you name it. i have many putumayo cds and i rank this in the top 5.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful.......2007-05-11

This instantly became one of my all-time favorite CDs. Like other reviewers, it makes me think of summer.... warm breezes, happy afternoon naps in the hammock, a long walk in the moonlight. I usually combine this with a little Brasil '66 and it's perfect, just perfect. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Buy it, without hesitation.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet set of new Brazilian music.......2007-03-06

The level of quality in Putumayo's world music samplers has been steadily rising over the last few years. The label scores another hit with this excellent collection of sleek modern balladeers and Brazilian pop innovators... Included are Da Lata, Rossa Passos, Jussara Silveira, Rita Ribero, and my personal hero, Moreno Veloso (the son of the great Caetano Veloso). There are also several less well known artists on here, but the level of quality is consistently very high. This is a really nice, really listenable album... Highly recommended for anyone who wants to check out some more recent Brazilian material. (This review originally posted in 2002)

5 out of 5 stars This compilation effected my samba selection more than any other.......2007-01-15

I have gone on to buy more of the artists work on this compilation than any other. I heard it at first in a store, wanted it immediately and asked them if I could see the disk and scratched out the names on a paper then typed them into amazon and bought many of them, am still buying them.

Putomayo selections are always satisfying they really seem to have a finger on the pulse of regions, this compilation is no exception

5 out of 5 stars Like instant summertime!.......2006-06-09

I love this album - a great mix of artists. The only track I don't much care for is #3. When I play this CD, I feel an instant sense of warmth and summertime - I don't have a lot of music from this genre, but this is a great CD to start with or expand your collection. The artists included are fantastic.

THIS IS JUST THE PERFECT CD, TO RELAX TO AND JUST LISTEN TO THE FANTASTIC MELODIES.

2 out of 5 stars What's with the organ?.......2007-03-21

Ocean breezes and steel drum music absolutely make my Caribbean vacations, so I was thrilled to find this album to I could bring a taste of the tropics to my own backyard.

I was so disappointed when I received this album...the sound of the steel drums are completely ruined by the addition of one of those old organs everybody's goofy uncle had in the 60s and 70s. You know the ones...they let you put a samba, bossa nova or fox trot beat over every Billy Joel song you tried to play.

It's a shame, because it is a nice selection of songs, but it turns the beautiful tropical music into a kitschy tiki lounge experience instead.

1 out of 5 stars So elevator music!.......2007-01-10

Bought this CD for a Caribbean themed party I was hosting. The music is great if you want to put everyone to sleep! Its like that background music you hear in the elevator! It wasnt as lively as I was looking for! So if you like it soft and mello... then this is for you! If you want lively...try a different one!

If I could give this C.D. 10 stars - I would! This is our favorite summer pool party music. Every track is fabulous! We even play this when it's just the family having hamburgers on the deck. It transports you to a breezy caribbean island with swaying palm trees. Okay, so it's just in your head, but man, this is a fun C.D.

5 out of 5 stars Like a small box of expensive and delicious candies!.......2007-06-12

The sound is the best I've heard on this album, with rhyhmic percussions that make you want to move. Consider Day Tripper, the Beatles tune, where it's lead guitar lines are transferred to a latin-tinged mambo type rhythmic pattern. Many of their favorite songs are here: Mais Que Nada, The Joker, One Note Samba etc. There is much more presence heard on this album than ever before, with clean and spacious highs and lows. The only negative comment I have is that at only a bit over 25 minutes long with only 10 short cuts, this is like tasting a small box of expensive, classy and delicious Brazilian candies. Give me more! more! Why didn't they add some outakes? But......those 25 minutes are pure ecstasy.

5 out of 5 stars Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66.......2007-05-13

I found this particular CD to be excellent to listen to. It reminds me very much of the mid 60's, the artist's singing is of high quality and the samba music sounds are great.

I recommend this cd to all people who love brasilian music.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa nova brilliance!.......2007-03-02

From the frenetic opening song 'Mais Que Nada,' to the comforting 'Berimbau,' this record is a surefire winner. If you're new to Mendes and his five million incarnations of 'Brasil (insert year here),' then this album just might be the perfect starter, as 'Mais' is no doubt his best-known hit single. Of course, you could always check out the NEW version of that song on his new 'Timeless' album with Black-Eyed Peas, but if you're not crazy about the funky urban reinvention (as am I), then by all means check this original one out. It'll melt all your worries away within seconds!

4 out of 5 stars Great sound & performance; but so-so packaging.......2007-01-22

I would submit this review for any and all of the recent A&M and Verve releases from the Brasil '66, beginning with Segio Mendes's debut disc (here) with the band. Unlike his contemporaries from the post-Bossa Nova wave in American jazz circles, Sergio Mendes carved a whole new genre, stylizing Brasilian sounds with jazz, and accesible popular tunes of the period. These works were greatly accentuated by the amazing vocal talents of Lani Hall, which breath new life in this pristine re-mastering. On another level, however, the running lengths of these discs are bothersome. At just over 30 minutes, it is hard to imagine why any record label could justify not issuing two-for-ones. At a retail cost of 5 or 6 bucks, there would be no room for complaint. But at $9 to $12, it seems unlikely these discs will be in print for very long.

Sergio Mendes 40th Anniversary concert at the Hollywood Bowl last Sunday, June 25, 2006 was a blast! To put a few words in a capsule that would describe that memorable evening, here goes . . .

Full-packed venue.
Tickets sold out.
Wonderful, alive and responsive audience.
Great performances of Sergio Mendes and his guests.
A night to remember.

It was a very memorable concert for I have met in person a musical legend while he was signing my CD booklets I brought with me. He's such an exceptional pianist, composer and a Bossa Nova icon as well. I've followed his musical career since Day One spanning four decades and have collected a good number of his most notable recordings of all-time. To me, the best part of the concert was the appearances of the equally talented husband and wife team of trumpeter, Herb Alpert, and the original Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 vocalist, Lani Hall. To the delight of the audience, they did a medley of my all-time favorites from this impressive collection "The Look of Love" (my friend and I as well as the audience were singing along) and "Fool On The Hill." Ditto with the performance by Joe Pizzulo of one of his hit songs "Never Gonna Let You Go." On this performance the audience started waving their cell phones (some with small flashlights) and you could see the lights illuminated from the phones - it was a beautiful sight - it's almost like seeing sparkling beads all over the place. The performances on "Mas Que Nada" and my very favorite song "Pretty World" were so nice, these are two of the seventeen tracks from this timeless and classic collection.

"Why don't we take a little piece of summer sky
Hang it on a tree
For that's the way to start to make a pretty world
For you and for me

And for the sun we'll take a lemon bright balloon
You can hold the string
Oh can't you see that little world of ours will be
The prettiest thing

We can gather rain enough for the stream
To hold our happy faces
When we want a breeze, I'll blow you a kiss or two
Take me in your arms and our little world
Will be the place of places
Nothing left to make but breakfast and love

We'll hang a little sign that says,
'Paradise: Population Two'
For that's the way to start to make a pretty world
For me and for you
For you, it's what I wanted to do, to do
To make a world..... with you."

Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 "Classics, Volume 18" is an absolute representation of typical Sergio Mendes music from the initial track "Mas Que Nada" to the final cut, "Alibis."

This is the kind of music you have enjoyed yesterday and will enjoy today, tomorrow and forever.

Timeless music.

4 out of 5 stars This 1987 retrospective is badly in need of a facelift........2005-12-29

If you did not grow up in the 1960's you just might wonder why so many baby boomers continue to be fixated on the music of that decade. The Billboard charts were filled with so many new and exciting sounds. When one thinks of 60's music the British Invasion and Motown immediately come to mind. But there were a number of other sounds that made an impact in the 1960's as well. Sergio Mendes brought his unique blend of Brazilian, jazz and American pop styles to America for the first time in 1966. His music was an instant sensation.
Although Sergio Mendes himself did not sing, he was the pianist, arranger, producer and musical director of this unique group. Led by vocalist Lani Hall, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 would produce some of the most innovative sounds of the late 60's. "Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66-86" features many of the highlights of the groups outstanding work during this period as well as a pair of hits from a later incarnation of the act in the mid 1980's.
To me "Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66-`86" was always a very strange concoction. Issued as part of A&M Records 25th anniversary "Classics" series in 1987, I was never very pleased with the way this one was done. If you are looking for the great 60's hits like "The Look of Love", "Scarborough Fair" and "The Fool On The Hill" then you will find them all here. Also included is the groups amazing 1969 hit "Pretty World" which is perhaps my favorite Sergio Mendes tune from that era as well as the groups very first hit single in America "Mas Que Nada". While the group experienced a fair amount of success on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart during this period, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 were a fixture on adult contemporary radio stations throughout the late 60's and early 70's. The group also sold a ton of albums. In fact, their debut LP simply entitled "Sergio Mendes and Brasil `66" remained on Billboards album charts for an amazing 126 weeks! You will find a number of selections from these LP's on this disc including "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Like A Lover" and the lovely "So Many Stars". Also included are a couple of fine instrumentals.
In 1983, Sergio Mendes re-emerged on A & M records with a brand new cast of charactors. The soulful single "Never Gonna Let You Go" featuring the splendid lead vocals of Joe Pizzulo and Leza Miller was one of the surprise hits of that year. Slightly more than a year later the wonderful pop single "Alibis" peaked at #29 on the Billboard pop chart. Both of these later singles are included on "Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66-'86" as well.
As I mentioned earlier I was never overly impressed with "Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66-86". The sound quality is OK but nothing more. The liner notes which were written some 19 years ago are dated and the packaging is drab. Of the 17 tracks in this collection I would question why 3 or 4 of them were included in the first place. Yet for all of these flaws this disc is still the best available Sergio Mendes collection released in the U.S. And that is too bad. In 1997, A&M's British unit released an updated 2 CD collection of Sergio Mendes. I am not particularly wild about that one either. Hopefully, Universal Records, who now controls the A&M catalogue in the U.S. will see fit to release an updated anthology of this remarkable act in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Keep looking, this is it........2005-09-28

I researched and this one contains most of the songs I love. Bought it and sounds great! Everyone that hears it loves it as well.

Album Description

It's undeniable that wine and music complement one another. This CD illuminates this fact with songs from wine producing nations around the world. The tasting starts in Europe with the French singer-songwriter Pauline Croze, whose contemporary chanson gives a modern twist to the vintage genre. Vinicio Capossela and Gianmaria Testa prove that Italy's appreciation for the fine arts extends to song weaving as well as winemaking. Spain's Amparanoia sings about a love paradox that could apply to drinking wine as well. Portugal's Jorge Fernando provides the perfect soundtrack for a glass of his country's famous port wine. Though now living in exile in France, Chile's Mariana Montalvo and her music have remained steadfastly rooted to the land where Bordeaux grapes thrived in the 19th Century. Argentina's Melingo offers as much variety in his music as his country does in its vineyards. On the opposite side of the world, the sunny locales of South Africa and Australia offered the British an alternative wine source during World War I and II. South African guitarist David Hewitt became known for his blends of classical and jazz music with African-inspired rhythms and melodies. Fellow guitarist Aaron Hopper collaborates with vocalist Kacey Patrick to form the group Stringmansassy for Australia's contribution to the wine list. California's Alison Brown and Greece's Vicky Moscholiou round out this robust collection of songs.

A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of Music from the Wine Lands will be donated to Slow Food in support of their Terra Madre World Meeting. Terra Madre provides a forum for those who seek to grow, raise, catch, create, distribute and promote food in ways that respect the environment, defend human dignity and protect the health of consumers.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but a little boring - Relaxed Dinner Music.......2007-02-08

I like most of the Putumayo CD's, but this one is a little sleepy. It's great to listen to before bed, or maybe while reading. Maybe even good music to compliment a quiet dinner (with wine of course). But, if you're looking for something up beat then one of their latin dance CD's are a better choice.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Putumayo.......2006-09-22

Living in the Wine Country,I looked forward to the release of this CD.After all, vineyards and wineries are part of my daily life.I wondered if this album would be a dud like "Music from the Coffee Lands" (a decaffeinated compilation if there ever was one)or a hit like "Music from the Tea Lands"(Putumayo's first Asian compilation, and one of its best)This CD proved to not be a disappointment.

Pauline Croze sings the breezy nouvelle chanson "Tita" (which also happens to be the heroine's name in the classic "Like Water for Chocolate");she gives smooth jazz to French music.Vinicio Capossela sings a melancholy song about the world's end.Amparanoia's "Puerto Claridad" is Spanish-meets-Cuban music.Jorge Fernando praises the Portuguese fado of his homeland.Alison Brown makes jazzy banjo music.Ana Laan's "Para el dolor" is lilting Spanish music. The late, husky voiced Vicky Moscholiou sings an imploring, bittersweet rembetiko in which she compares herself to coffee.Mariana Montalvo blends the chanson of her French home with the traditional Chilean instruments of her heritage.2raumwohnung plays smooth German jazz--not exactly a contradiction in terms. The late David Hewitt's "Streetbeat" is glorious African guitar music. The closing song,"Headless" from Australia's Stringmansassy, combines great acoustic guitar music with an odd song&odder vocalizations.

This album is a perfect companion to a glass of wine;it's also a great European compilation (though it has contributions from Australia, the US,South Africa,Chile&Argentina)and great for those who enjoy acoustic music. It's as relaxing as a good glass of wine.
