Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

This is pure corn-fed discontent. Former Iowa resident Arecee releases his second record, "Beating a Dead Horse", under NYC's Collekt Records in Brooklyn, New York. His dark melodic beats and thick delivery are a refreshing alternative to today's bubblegum thug rap and purist hip-hop. On the track titled 'Breathe Deep' we hear a glimpse of a tragic past romance gone sour while the up-beat 'Round and Round' features hip-hop heavyweight Supastition. In 'Life is Cartoons,' Arecee proclaims that "hip-hop is stupid"; after watching MTV, I couldn't agree more. Lush self produced beats and deeply personal lyrics make this release a breath of fresh air in today's copycat music industry. Arecee's first release, "Direction for Children" featuring Sage francis, is currently in stores.

if it walks, talks, and quacks like good hiphop well it must be. don't even think about it. just buy it. arecee's second official release shows what hard work and dedication bring to the struggling sound of current hip POP. if you need respite from the inexplicable crap flooding the scene and stinkin up the charts, this is your album.

Another Round.......2003-04-22

I discovered Pistol Grip back when my friend was on the street team for BYO. They had just released their first album, the Shots From the Kalico Rose and I bought it almost immediatly. It was one of the best albums I'd heard in a while, and this new album is no dissapointment. It has a seemingly more distinct sound, i.e., less catchy riffs and more soul, with a noticable Adicts influence. I cannot wait to see them live again (for the third time). When I saw them at Warped Tour here in Dallas last year, me and my friend were the only people actively at their small stage. I highly recommend you get out there, buy this album, and catch one of their shows. They don't have the fan base they most definatly deserve.

Pure fun.......2007-06-12

So, I'm looking for Celtic stuff on the internet, and I run across this band's website. I was about to move on when the site automatically began playing one of their songs, "What's Up Yours?". I listened carefully to the lyrics and knew I HAD to have this CD. The lead singer has this great whiskey roughened voice, and the rest of the band is amazing. Some of the album is more traditional Celtic folk music (with a twist), some of it is original music (Celtic with a bit of rock thrown in for fun). I now have all of the Barleyjuice CD's, but this one is still my favorite. The high energy and irreverent spirit of this band set it apart from other, more staid and classic Celtic bands. You WILL NOT find a rendition of "Danny Boy" on a Barleyjuice CD! With songs like "Nancy Drinks Tequila", "Potatoes", and "What's Up Yours?", how could you not have fun? I also love the song "Monto", though I admit I have NO IDEA what it's about! The special star of this CD is "Whiskey to the Sea". Buy this CD!!!!
