Real Detroit sound.......2007-07-08

In some of the songs on this album, Detroit rapper Phat Kat laments that it took the death of legendary producer J Dilla for radio stations to actually play any of his music. As crass as that may sound, he's got a point: Hip-hop radio has completely slept on any Detroit artists that aren't Eminem or in Eminem's camp.

Phat Kat, for instance, has been around for quite a while and, with this masterfully assembled album, is finally getting some due outside the 313. Basically, if you like hard-hitting beats and grimy lyrics you should like this album and you should check out other Detroit luminaries such as Black Milk and Guilty Simpson. And, of course, J Dilla.

being from NY, I can honestly say that the D(etroit) is the near being the next NY. Phat Kat brings it hard to the mic with beats from J Dilla, Black Milk, Young RJ, and Nick Speed. A classic Detroit sound that will evoke thoughts of the "Old" New York.

This is an amazing album. Production is on point of course with Black Milk and Dilla, and "cold steel" is the perfect single for this album. Certainly a must have for any hip-hop fan. I consider this a solid album that could easily be considered classic.

"Carte Blanche Volume 1" is the perfect CD for parties, loungin' around or for wallpaper music. It's not overpowering with filler garbage or overused chillout songs or even techno/D&B beats professing to be chillout. The mixture of breakbeats, jazz and funk on Carte Blanche is sure to win over any average music connoisseur. The mixing and music selections are stunningly appropriate, and the songs accentuate each other. The amazing and most impressive thing about the Naked Music Records label comp CDs is the uniqueness of their songs and the unaccessibity of the artists in most records stores. The bad thing is once you've heard most of the songs on their discs, you're frantically looking around for more material from the featured artists. However, you'll find solace in knowing that "Carte Blanche" is more than enough to tide you over in the meanwhile.

A great mix of chilly acid jazz with a splash of soul. Perfect for the newly curious -- perfect for dinner parties, or any other time you're just sitting around drinking. In fact, I've found the only time it isn't perfect is first thing in the morning (tried it). What's more, there are seemingly dozens more albums on the same theme, so when you hear this and just can't get enough, you have plenty of choices.

We work, we have families, we aren't in the life (ok, maybe we are, but that's another review...) and so we come to trust others to search through volumes of material and select the best. That's what the Naked-Music label does for me. I love (and own) everything they put out. Deep house, chilled, danceable, partyable, at the beachable. This first compilation CD in the Carte Blanche series set the tone for the others that followed. These are all good. Smart, sexy, lucious. Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

A quality chillout collection, and that's not easy to find.......2004-12-12

Finding good chillout discs is tough. Most of the stuff I've come across have a few decent tracks at most, or maybe just one, and a lot of bland filler, often with poorly sung vocals. Not many are good for playing straight through, without wanting to skip tracks. Enter Carte Blanche 2, a fine disc start to finish. Relaxed, spacy, with a strong but downtempo beat and gently soaring and soulful melodies lacing their way across the music. Suitable for parties, lounging, sipping wine, driving in traffic or, certainly, late-night chilling out. This is easy-going but skillfully done music, that won't insult your taste. The Naked Music people have done a fine job here of striking the elusive balance between relaxing and interesting, mellow but still sharp. The tracks are similar in mood and feel, but still distinct and different. You won't get bored. This disc rewards multiple listenings, and unlike all too many others is actually worth the money. If you've been hunting for that rare bird, quality, classy chillout, this is what you've been looking for. A good buy.

i just recently discovered this remarkable and hypnotizing brand of music.
I'm kicking myself for not pursuing this earlier...

Relaxed, Jazzy, Laid-back house music. Make me remember my first Naked Music album was Midnight Snack which is released in 1999, what a nice album it was, so different from other mainstream chill out flood. This album is even better with much better sound. Non of the songs in this album disappoint me.

By the way, Amazon.com wrote the release date wrong, it is not in 2001, it was in Oct. 2000. However, this album still has the refreshing and up-to-date feeling.

Misplaced Mix, Carte Blance style..........2006-10-24

I do like the Carte Blance series. Yet I didn't care for Volume #3. Although better than the disastrous Volume #2 mix, which was only a time well spent on blah.

Vol #3 is left needing a theme. The thing with the Carte Blance series, Naked Music's arraingement of lower and slower leftovers, has some keen diamonds in it. Stateless' 'Fall into You' is deep and very good. Central Living (Love that name) 'Inside' is all too hot. Kimra's 'Essential Things' is a unique but very effective cut. Very nice!

The rest of the CD remains a leftover bin. I wish Naked Music would have compiled a better CD for the #3 series. The artists look out of synch in this offering - and it's not their fault.

The best in the series yet! .......2006-07-19

I own all three of the Carte Blanche cd's that have been released along with a couple of other cd's in the naked music collection. Carte Blanche vol. 3 is by far my favorite. Vol 1 follows closely in second place.. Vol. 1 offers a more Jazzy feel to it, vol. 2 offers a more funkdified, soulful mix and vol. 3, offers a cooler, smoother sound blending the jazz and soul from the first two releases. My favorite track is Deeper Love by Onda.. The first time I heard it I knew I had to have it..

If any of you out there have only one of these cd's (Carte Blanche 1,2, or 3) and you enjoyed it, please get the other two. They just get better and better each time you hear them. I've had this cd for 4 years now and everytime I listen I hear somethign different. It just gets better ever time. Hey, Naked Music, were waiting desperately for number 4.

The Best mix from Naked Music.......2006-03-22

This album certainly encapsulates a style. It was a time in music and a niche thats well worth owning on CD. Soul fronts funked disco jazz and chilled house but its better heard than read or written. Ive always witnessed its positive moving effect on people, myself included, the music journeys deep easily and its an unpretentious clean experience. All in all its the complete selection and mix of changing moods and beats that makes this album excellent rather than its individual talents, isnt that how it was meant to be? Its up there in my alltime top ten.

After owning for a year, this cd is still great!.......2003-07-31

I've owned this cd for over a year now and have to say that I still listen to it quite a bit. This cd just has a way of putting you in a good mood. The first three songs set a calm and wintry mood and the romantic 'fall into you' brightens things up and leads nicely into 'deeper love,' 'backbone,' and then 'hold you close' (my personal favorite of the cd.

On long road trips, it never fails. I put this cd in and am overcome with a great feeling of peace. Rarely does a cd contain songs that, in the aggregate, play so perfectly off each other and create a real sense of enjoyment that transcends the music itself. And if there is any lingering doubt as to what my opinion is, I highly recommend this cd.

I've been searching for music like this since finding out about Cassius. This is a kickin' CD. The grooves are positively propulsive. Carte Blanche is why I listen to music. It doesn't matter if it's Johannes Bach or James Brown; good music is joyful to hear.

Funky! Jazzy! Amazing!.......2002-06-10

I first heard Carte Blance Vol. 1 a few years ago while I was in Demark. It was like nothing I had ever heard before, it is distinctive and moving. When volume 2 came out I knew it was going to be banging! Being a fan of Hip Hop, Jazz & R&B Naked Music is like candy to me, it has all the right elements. I highly suggest Blue Six: Beautiful Tomorrow also. I own many Naked Music titles but Carte Blance 2 and Blue Six get heavy rotation in my CD player.

Cool.....easy going......and tempting!.......2001-06-13

This album is really my this year's favourite and creates an ideal atmosphere for a hot night on the beach. At least I think this is a major turn-on! After having listened to Naked Music's more uptempo Nude Dimensions vol.2 I was certain they couldn't do better than that. How wrong could I be! You absolutely wouldn't regret buying this CD.....

If you are a college student in need of some music to study to, if you work too much and require some music to relax to, if you are planning a romantic evening with your sig. other, etc., than this compilation is for you. It is basically lounge music infused with a little house and trance, but the moving beats and percussion sound really give the album a delicate, but powerful sound. I am especially fond of Silver Surfer.

Sexy Masterpiece!!!.......2001-04-03

I have only started listening to this type of genre of music within the last several weeks, but I must say, you will never see or hear this type of music in mainstream radio. Carte Blanche Vol 2 is smooth, trippy and elegantly designed from top to bottom. Every track flows in your soul and stirs it up with good vibes all the way. If you like this type of music, definitely check out the Hed Kandi series (Winter Chill Vol.2, Serve Chilled Vol. 1 and 2)---vol 2 is the best. Also, Afterlife should be included in this list...her vocals are so hauntingly beautiful. All in all, a MUST HAVE!! *****

When I first listened to Volume II I thought the label had gone a little too downbeat from Volume I. But, as I listened further I began to really appreciate the profound layering and deep lustrous complexion of this extremely fine compilation. I can honestly say that this Naked Music release out of all that I own, (and I own five of them) has stayed with me the longest.

I really have to stress how brilliant this song really is. It's a classic. At first it sounds like nothing special and then this soft piano comes in. Just like that typical trance formula with the build up and the climax... though the climax here is just breathtaking. As the song quiets down when you only hear the soft piano, you don't realise how great the climax is going ot be. As it reaches it, where the full beat comes in, it is almost euphoric.
