3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2005-08-07

The playing is very good. But, the music itself leaves something to be desired. The pieces lack variety, and after listening to a few many amongst us would be able to see the same tonal structures appearing over and over again.

I think the music of Weiss (recorded by Robert Barto on Naxos) is a far better example of well played and truly well written lute music.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Renaissance Lute Music Delight !.......2002-03-20

O'Dette's interpretation of this wonderful set of songs is amazing and delightful. Pieces such as Fantasia ( Castelfranco MS ), Pourquoy Allez-Vous Seullette, La Tradittora - only to quote a few-, are simply unbelievable experiences of the refined and high sense of art which emanates from O'Dette's ability to touch his instrument.

I strongly recommend this recording to everyone interested in lute music ! Enjoy it !

5 out of 5 stars Pure Renaissance Delight.......2002-03-18

O'Dette's interpretation of this set of carefully chosen pieces is quite amazing and delightful. Piece's such the virtuoso Fantasia - Castelfranco MS, Pourquoy Allez-Vous Seullette and La Tradittora - among others-, are only a few examples of the "clearest case of genius ever to touch his instrument ", as O'Dette is known among the specialized musicians of the highest level of technique and feeling.

This true opus must be listened in a wide room, with the lights turned off. Just light a stick of opium incense, taste a hot cup of mint tea, and you'll travel in time. To that time when music wasn't played loud, 'cause it's essence relied upon it's delicacy and sweetness.

That's what this set of really pure early renaissance lute music brings to you, listener. Enjoy it !

David Russell has been part of my guitar listening experience for sometime now. He truly is a phenomenal guitarist. On this album he plays many of what I call "Renaissance Hits" on, of course, the "acoustic" guitar. I had to listen very close to determine that he really was playing these Renaissance works on the guitar and not on the lute itself. He does a fantastic job of replicating the sound of the lute and what I consider the "Renaissance Style ", The album contains a good sample of Renaissance music with y works by John Dowland, Pietro Borrono, William Byrd and of course by that ubiquitous "Anonymous." I feel that this album could really be valuable as an introduction to the beauties of "Renaissance Music". Anyway, David Russell plays the works contained therein splendidly with very beautiful tone

Antonio Carlos Jobim is remembered as one Brazil's greatest composers. He spearheaded the creation of bossa nova nearly a half century ago; he was also a musician whose talents extended far beyond that of a composer. His training was in classical music and he'd been involved with large-scale orchestral collaborations for his work over the years. This posthumous effort, recorded live in 2002, highlights many of those large-scale works, offering lush arrangements by the maestro himself, Claus Ogerman, and Nelson Riddle, as well as new charts by son Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet. In addition to classical arrangements of such classics as "A Felicidade" and "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Impanema"), previously unreleased pieces "Preludio" and "Lenda" make their debut on this double-disc collection. This large canvas of sound deftly illustrates the beauty of Jobim's melodies, but the composer's majestic sense of harmony is really highlighted, thus offering up the biggest revelation of the project. This is the best re-imagination of the composer's work since Morelenbaum/Sakamoto's Casa. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars In Concert With The Sun, Moon, Stars And A Heavenly Choir, Everytime Someone Enjoys Symphonic Jobim, An Angel Gets His Wings!.......2007-06-21

Jobim loves people, and gets excited about all kinds of things, I'm sure there's certain pieces by Debussy and Ravel that made Jobim red in the face because they are so beautiful.

How does an Artist manage to be influenced and still a make a work of art their own?

Love and desire.

Symphonic Jobim strikes me as being very Nationalistic, a sort of Spiritual road map to the heart of the World, and what better way to celebrate one's roots by drawing on the panorama of Rio and Brazil, or, Brasil.

Frank Loyd Wright once said, Architecture is frozen Music. Jobim went on record, Music is frozen Architecture!

Thanks, Tom!

Historians say the height of Civilisation is the drawing in and taking out of water, music is like water, it comes in waves, when I listen to Symphonic Jobim all the public works are in place and working smoothly.

I was raised on Debussy and Ravel, but they're a little before my time, Symphonic Jobim puts life's panorama in perspective for me.

I don't have to be near a pretty picture window to drink in the scenery when I listen to Symphonic Jobim, the beautiful motifs conjure all kinds of pictures and feelings.

Every recording becomes a by product of the time period it was made, but Symphonic Jobim has a certain timelessness attached to it... it is a perfect piece of music beginning to end!

Symphonic Jobim, a Project by Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet, does much credit to it's Composer. Good Job!

5 out of 5 stars This is a MUST BUY for frottola freaks........2003-01-17

Ms. Rumsey is not a singer AND a musician. (Singers are musicians, thank you.) She is a musician of extreme talent and expertise in singing and playing multiple instruments. She really understands this genre and she is the number one musician who plays and sings frottole simultaneously. Ms Kirkby sings well but does not play an instrument while singing. Mr. O'Dette plays well but does not sing. As a musician who has recorded serveral frottole, I can tell you that what Ms. Rumsey does is not easy, but she makes it sound easy and lovely. Dr. M.G. Ceruiti, mezzosoprano, guitar, mandolin

5 out of 5 stars Just listen to the samples.......2003-01-02

Shirley Rumsey is such a gifted singer and musician. Each piece is so hauntingly beautiful. I find it amazing that someone with this much talent isn't better known. Oh well, if you are tired of the crap that is passing for music these days, just buy this cd and turn off the radio.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Program.......2002-01-04

The main strength of this recording is the overall program. The selection of pieces, the order in which they are played, and the musical interpretation here make for a good recital. The interpretations I think are a little different than what is typical giving the listener a new perspective on some of these pieces. For example, one usually hears a Dalza Piva as a fairly driving dance piece; but on this recording the Piva is presented as a quietly sweet piece, and it works. Other than some unique, but tasteful interpretation, there is nothing especially outstanding about the performance here, good or bad. There are singers, such as Emma Kirkby, that have given early music vocal performances vastly superior to anything here; and there are lute players running around that can play Ms. Rumsey right into the ground. But this recording, taken as a whole, is enjoyable, bears up well to repeat listening, and is an excellent value.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure.......2001-09-17

I've listened to a lot of recordings of early Italian music, and this is among the best -- exquisitely played and sung. Rumsey has a gift for making this music both accessible and intimate, which is how it was intended. I can't believe the price is so low.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB VALUE.......2001-04-26

This is a beautiful album in all ways - lovely choice of repertoire, songs sung in believable period style with a clear strong voice, vibrant instrumentals. Usually when an artist both sings and plays, one of these elements is weaker. Not so here! If you like Renaissance music, get this - it's well worth its overly-modest price.

5 out of 5 stars Serene Music For The Soul.......2005-10-20

Paul O'Dette performs here a variety of compositions for lute from Renaissance Italy. The listener here has a variety of composers and compositions that are tranquil and spiritual in nature. This touching music was perfectly performed by Paul O'Dette who has a clear mastery of this difficult instrument. I'm glad I bought it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Lute Music For The Joy Of Man.......2001-07-24

O'Dette's interpretation of Da Milano, Da L'Aquila, Borrono and Da Ripa lute works is amazing, graceful and rich in textures that can be achieved only by the striking talent of those composers and by himself as the world's most recognized lutenist. Such a wonderful set of pieces for lute is a gift for our troubled hearts, bringing us the virtuosity and delicacy of the true Renaissance Lute Music. I strongly recommend it for people who really loves music, 'cause it's a very well crafted work which combines a highest degree of technique allied with the deepest aesthetic sense of art it deserves. The pieces are quite like musical paintings, each chord carefully shadowed, each detail worked to its essence and truth, and the artist's personality present in every note. O'Dette really deserves the acclamation and respect he has, and I am proud of knowing his works. I say that you should listen to his music in a wide room, turn off the lights, light an stick of opium incense and take a cup of tea. Enjoy it !

5 out of 5 stars Paul O'Dette is a likable genius........2000-11-28

Having attended high school with Paul, I can remember when he stopped spending all his time on electric guitar and started concentrating on the lute. I'm not sure about this, but I think it had something to do with the fact that the school needed musicians to stroll around playing period music during the English department's Elizabethan festival.

At any rate, Paul got ever deeper into the lute, and now a couple of decades later, it seems that he has done more to popularize early music of the genre than perhaps any other musician. By looking at his discography alone, it is evident that he is not only a performer but a scholar of the musical literature of the period throughout Europe.

His virtuosity has been lavishly documented by reviewers far more knowledgable than me. Nevertheless, it does not take an expert to recognize the delicacy and artistry with which Paul plays. His touch lends liveliness and beauty to a category of music which many modern listeners might otherwise find antiquated and quaint.

This disc contains selections which are in turn soothing and sublime, sprightly and animated.

If you stumbled across this CD by accident on the Amazon site, I hope that this review will convince you to add it to your collection.

We may think of dances as having stronger rhythmic emphasis than many of the pieces on this disc. There are plenty of accents and strummed chords to be found here but also some very gentle, lilting melodies. McFarlane has selected a very varied program from a number of Renaissance collections and then arranged the pieces to provide a listening program that never palls throughout the hour it lasts. Of course, much of the reason for the disc's maintaining our interest so well is the excellent playing of McFarlane, who is equally adept with bouncy tunes and tender ones. Dorian's very clear, resonant, realistic sound also adds to the enjoyment. --Leslie Gerber

4 out of 5 stars Renaissance lute - nice survey.......2001-12-12

Catchy yet pensive, these dance suites convey something of the fascination with the art of love that pervades the Renaissance, a point not lost on Dorian's perceptive marketing staff. Dorian has released a host of thematically programmed early music designed to pique the interest of the novice as well as the seasoned collector. It works; particularly when you have such a sympathetic player as McFarlane, who sounds like your average guy who started his career on electric guitar, gravitated toward the lute, became a world class player, and who, incidentally, enjoys meditating and taking long walks by the shore. His partner for one suite, Mark Cudek, throws in a tidbit about being a competitive tri-athlete. They may be folksy, but don't tell them to get a life.

Works on this program mostly date from the early 1500's, when the European appetite for courtly dance was at its height. McFarlane has selected his favorites from among composers such as Joanambrosio Dalza, Pierre Attaingnant (a publisher of music actually), and Hans Judenkunig. The typical suite begins with a stately main dance (pavana or basse danse) and concludes with a faster, jumping dance (saltarello or hupfauf). McFarlane uses three different lutes by modern masters, selecting the one most appropriate to the music. My favorite of his lutes is an older 8-course; owing to its loose internal bracing, it imparts a unique twang to certain notes. The rustic effect is easily heard on the first suite by Attaingnant, where a series of trills in the Pavane are accompanied by a strummed, ground base.

Dorian uses a well-documented 20-bit technique, and this program was recorded in the revered Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. The good sound that is their hallmark is present here. Easily enjoyed.

If you don't know whether you'll enjoy Italian songs of the Renaissance era, this disc will convince you one way or the other--probably positively. Baird's dexterity and expressiveness bring the antique material to life, and her light voice is perfect for the music. McFarlane collaborates with vigor and personality, instead of accompanying from a respectful distance, and he even varies the program with some beautiful lute solos. Printed texts with literate translations also help bring the music closer to us, and the recording quality is superb. The only problem with the disc is that it's difficult to read the names of the composers and titles, which are printed in small type on a picture background. But if that's the worst problem, who cares? --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars An excellent little release........2006-01-14

'The Italian Lute Song' featuring Soprano Julianne Baird and Lutist Ronn McFarlane is a superior recording if you are especially fond of the origins of the Italian song, for it is much more about the vocals than it is about the Lute.

The fact that the recording includes pieces by relatively familiar names such as Monteverdi and des Prez makes it more interesting, in that you can readily compare these works with their other performed and recorded works.

I would not go out of my way to acquire a copy of this recording, but if I ran across it for a good price, I would snap it up and enjoy every minute of it.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding performance!!!.......1999-01-09

Julianne Baird, along with Emma Kirkby, is virtually unique in having achieved super-stardom as an exclusively Early Music Soprano. She is symbolic of the sea-change in this field which was once the refuge of artists who couldn't make it in the mainstream of the Romantic repertoire. In the early days of the "authentic performance" movement one could emit just about any ear-splitting squawk or squeal and maintain that it was "historically correct." Since no one can prove definitively how music sounded 'way back then, there being no recordings, many in the early revival movement got away with murder. Hideous voices were justified by pointing to Renaissance paintings of singing angels with their neck muscles tightly constricted.

Happily, singers like Ms. Baird, who have gorgeous voices, have convinced the public that putting in the required hockets and trills is more than authentic enough at this remove to present early music in a way that satisfies both the scholar and the general listener. Baird's astounding technique and beauty of timbre cannot fail to win one over at once, as demonstrated in the very first track of this album, Monteverdi's Laudate Dominum.

Her partner here, Ronn McFarlane, accompanying her on the lute and having a few solo turns, is likewise a considerable artist with numerous recordings to his credit, many with The Baltimore Consort of which he is a member. He also taught lute for 11 years at the Peabody Conservatory. The two work together in perfect harmony and are vividly recorded.

Although all of the 33 selections feature Italian music for lute, or voice and lute, there is an amazing variety of materials covering some 150 years, from the late Renaissance through the early Baroque. The songs range from sacred to secular, polyphonic to homophonic, simple to complex, happy to sad. There are famous composers such as Monteverdi, and obscure ones such as Franciscus Bossinensis (literally, "of Bosnia." I can see it coming: "The Bosnian Baroque"!).

Whatever the provenance, there are nothing but gems in this 70-minute program of scintillating, tuneful music. The extensive booklet includes complete texts with English translations, in-depth notes on the composers and their musical forms and styles, with bios and pictures of the artists. Mission: accomplished.

This fabulous concert comprises Brazilian melodies, both traditional and those composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, with the ample talents of Paulo Jobim, Mario Adnet, and many top Brazilian arrangers and musicians. I was lucky enough to witness a live rehearsal of this concert last spring in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Very impressive! Lush melodies, orchestral arrangements of depth and complexity, the vocal majesty of Milton Nascimento and many others; all of the above add up to a very satisfying musical experience to anyone who loves the rich tasty delight that is Brazilian music.
