About the Artist
Also known as 'The Star of the East', Om Kalthoum (Om Kolthoum, Om Kalthum, Um Kalthum, Om Kalsoum, Um Kaslum) is considered to be the best and most influential Arab singer who ever lived, and one of the most popular singers in the history of music. She was born in Egypt in 1908, and died there in 1975 after a very productive life in which she sang over 400 songs. Her songs are still heard with the same reverence as when she was alive. Her audience still hums along or cries in reaction to the passion she evokes and the wide range of pitch with which she sings. One reviewer mentioned that her following totals that of Elvis Presly and Maria Callas combined. Over 1 million of her albums are sold every year. Her songs were composed by the most prominent Arab composers such as Zakariyya Ahmad, Mohammad al-Qasabji, Riad el-Sounbati, Mohammad Abdul Wahab, Mohammad el-Mougi and Baligh Hamdi.

A wonderful masterpiece.......2002-10-18

This is among my most favorite CD collections. The pieces on it are romantic, inspired, and haunting and only improve with age and repeated listening. This is that rare CD that enchants company and leads them to quietly listen, spellbound. A truly remarkable compilation of astonishingly beautiful music sung by an equally beautiful voice.

RUN TO GET THIS CABALLE!.......2000-08-30

I say run to get this recording, you know how briefly they stay in print. This is a gleaming collection of Caballe's art. A wide span of recording years is covered here. Beginning delightfully with "Hijo de la luna" and a set of Spanish songs, the magic comes on quick. A recent version here of "My Heart at Thy Sweet Voice" is an irreplaceable treasure. Such understanding in the singing, such intelligent and mighty phrasing - just wonderful! And "Io son l'umile ancella" is rendered with colossal artistry, the final rising phrase so laden with genuine patience, it turns the merely artful into true art. It's a remarkable rendering of Cilea's aria. Disc 2 is the more expansive of the two- Caballe's take on "Sempre libera" ('67 version here) has no real peer, except maybe Sutherland's. The Charpentier is delicious as can be. What is that lingering feeling around this woman's singing? She is an uncompromising artist, we're so lucky to have these recordings.

This CD is a collection of songs from all over the world! What I am going to say is that it even contains a Chinese song which is originated from one of the four famous ancient novels in China--Dream of the Red Mansion. Amazingly,Jose Carreras pronouces those Chinese characters very well.
It's an awesome CD for JC fans AROUND THE WORLD~~

The golden voice still got its old magic. A marvellous collection of songs that suit that world-famous tenor voice like tailored up for it. José Carreras sings these popular classics with the velvet sound he is so famous for. I'm sure this album will win the maestro a lot of new fans!

This CD is wonderful. I think it's his best recording in several years. Carreras' facility with so many languages is remarkable and this album showcases that ability in every way. There's no opera, but a variety of pieces sung with the passion and nuances we've come to expect from him. All of it is in the voice range in which he still has the beautiful timbre and tone that have kept him so successful for so many years. When you listen to Wind of Change, one realizes that he probably could have been a "pop" star if he'd gone that direction instead of opera.

In Jose's so called "Autumn" of his carreer he has never failed to amaze me. Around The World features several different types of songs that convey Jose's fondness of the world in which we all live. This is evident in songs like "Wind Of Change" featuring a duet with Klaus Meine (from The Scorpions), "Kawa No Nagare No Yoni" from Japan, "Vurria" from Italy, & "Hine E Hine" from New Zealand. You are not going to hear Jose belt out high c's on this one. What you are going to hear is Jose sing, with his golden velvet voice, evergreens of love and passion. In my opinion Jose sounds every bit as fresh and in command with his voice as he did in the late 80's and early 90's. This is a must for all who love Jose and enjoy great singing from the soul.

This mother and daughter indulgence is most successful when singing folk duets from their native Spain. Their voices, two different cuts from the same vocal beef, blend magically, creating the unequalled pleasure of two singing as one. Caballe impresses with her delicacy and beauty during high, legato passages, and dramatic power everywhere else. Marti's vocal technique is solid, a pleasant and even sound when it's not occasionally bordering on edgy and grating. Her artistry is in its nascent stage, a little more charm and musicality is necessary to develop into a world class singer. I love this cd so much it brings me great happiness.When Caballe recorded this digital album with her daughter she was 62.She still possessed the most beautiful soprano voice in the world,even though she had to sing easier music then.Montserrat Marti also has a beautiful voice and often sounds alot like Caballe.Ms.Marti performs a lovely O mio babbino caro.,with a super pianissiamo.Caballe sings the most incredible O ma lyre immortelle-from Sapho I have ever heard.She sings it better than sopranos or mezzos half her age,with both frightening power and soft sweet singing,ending the aria with powerful and dramatic high notes.This aria is about contemplating death and his the heavest piece on the entire album.Most of the rest of the cd is made up of lighter music.Caballe has proven she can still sing well,and has also given her daughter alot of exsposure,making this unique and beautiful album.
