4 out of 5 stars An amazing album that really surprised me........2006-05-11

I'm a DJ (most house, breaks, etc..) so i'm always given new music by friends. Was given this album and was totally 'wowed' by it. Clean groovy beats with great vocals (almost STREETS like). 'i'm in love' and 'shot down' are incredible tracks.

3 out of 5 stars One step back.......2006-03-16

As an avid fan of their first, I awaited Audio Bully's latest with fiendish anticipation. Given how fresh alot of their first stuff was, this second album was just a little bit of a let down. Whilst the laid back beat stuff is good, the more up-beat stuff is nothing compared to the first. They seem to have reverted back to the god-awful mid-nineties Robert Miles style of cresecendo tunes, which was something of a step-back given how progressive their beats were in their first album. Worth buying if you're a fan, just not as good as the first.

2 out of 5 stars what went wrong?.......2006-02-18

I am still at a loss to figure out how the audiobullys went from producing one of the best dance record of recent times in ego war with its gravely vocal, big beats and well layered original use od samples to this piss poor effort. i heard shot you down last summer and while it followed the same format of face in the clouds it was still a bangin tune and i hoped that it would set a precedent for the rest of the album. needless to say it did'nt, this is the only stand out track on the album the rest of it doesn't even come close. the only other highlight of the album is an apperence from suggs (formerly of madness)who spouts a few classic lines like "i was casauly sorry". thats how i felt after spending money on this album

3 out of 5 stars Audio Bullys: Generation (astralwerks) - music, 3 stars.......2006-02-10

The dance generation these days are sick of hearing Djs today. They want authetic instruments these days. That is what DFA brought them. But with a name like Audio Bullys', you better not expect much form the Audio Bullys but a musical challenge for those who had heard Electronic music, and the fact that they will force you onto the dance floor. Generation is where they try to show off their talents in Electronica, but it turns out their talents can salso be the worst of their expectations sometimes. You guys already know not to listen to the quite terrible remix of Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang", called "Shot You Down", right? When I first listened to them, I started thinking, "Is this really the best they can do? Take a song, cut it in half a bit, and then remix the rest?" The song sounds incredibly lazy, even for the sound effects for the guns.

However this does nothing for my expectations to hear the rest of Generation, a collection of Audio Bullys' latest mixture of Electronica and Hip-Hop done to fair amounts of perfection. Fair amounts Especially, since the duo created a masterpiece with "We Don't Care". The rest of the album tries to span and do better than Ego War. Either that or just trying to get better exposure as a British Electronic Act. Their song "Keep on Moving" tries to show a rapper's skills to pull of an element of The Streets Mike Skinner never knew he had.

"Bring Light" sounds a bit like a lackluster Gorillaz upstage, if it wasn't for the "When the Beat Goes On" sample, and "Generation" is interesting for a Mr. Oizo concept album but on this one it will take a bit of time to get into. Their latest song "I'm In Love" tries to play the sensitive part, but the heavy background ruins the mood just a little bit. Even the occasionally ear-catching "Struck by the Sound" overdoes the Pink Panther Jazz-Dance embrace too easily.

The approximately 60 minute album may appeal to Hip-Hop Instrumental fans, Electronica fans, those who are used to hearing unclassifiable music or those looking for new music but will not appeal to those who expect better than that. And the most efficient fuel Audio Bullys ever use for their stuff is musical acceptance and going over your expectations for a fresh new Electronic prototype of a sensation. After all, the Audio Bullys promise to make you dance no matter what genre they are trying to cripwalk, moon walk, soft-shoe or just get nuts through.

Audio Bullys always promise the best of themselves and push themselves to bring it to you. And that is what "I Won't Let You Down" tries to say to all of us. And it is that type of force that they didn't have to harness. But because they did and this album clearly shows with plenty of variety on your plate and left to waste a bit, the album is a bit on the "good but not as great as we had hoped, and not really as bad as we had hoped, either" section.

Rating: 6.5/10

...and for the second reviewer. Yes. There is 17 tracks, not 14.

4 out of 5 stars Question.......2006-01-27

I just have a question - would anyone happen to know just how many tracks this CD has on it? The UK has only 14 tracks but here it shows 17. Is that a mistake?

5 out of 5 stars Truly Amazing.......2004-02-17

I am only on the 6th track and already I am blown away. It is such a diverse mix brought together by a group I have never heard of until just today, Audio Bullys. Each song melds into each other so smoothly. Songs are so good I get up out my seat and start dancin'! Such a perfect mix like this....I have never heard anything this good!

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2004-02-06

Let me first say off, that this isn't your typical 'chill' record. It is a conglomeration of sounds that puts you into the minds of the Audio Bullys. And, it does it very successfully. I really enjoyed it, and not because it was the greatest album ever, but it is a really diverse and ecletic collection of songs that shouldn't be missed. If you ever think twice about getting this, you should have just thought about it once and got it the first time. Definatly not a CD to be missed! Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars NOT for chilling!.......2004-01-15

Loud, obnoxious, clanky and annoying. Maybe a good one for getting yourself up and at 'em after a night of revelry, but trying to chill with this playing is like trying to wind down with 4 pots of espresso.

Trumpeted by the dance-music press as one of 2003's "next big things," London's Audio Bullys have been causing something of a stir with their fuzzy soundsystem beats, loud basslines, and cockney vocals. Debut single "We Don't Care" was a menacing musical manifesto; a loud, laddish, bass-heavy mash-up of house, dub, hip-hop, and bassline garage that seemed to stick two-fingers up at perceived musical boundaries. Clearly, these guys mean business. The duo's much-heralded debut long player, Ego War, expands this manifesto further, taking in elements of ska, punk, and electro. It's pretty good, too, mixing genuinely abrasive floor-fillers--"Real Life," "The Snow" (a disco-punk-house mash-up of epic proportions), with more contemplative numbers (such as the wistful "Veteran" or "100 Million"). Sometimes they come on like the Specials jamming with Basement Jaxx with the Streets' Mike Skinner on vocals, at other times like "Magnificent Seven"-era Clash with Rob "Stereo MC's" Birch on vocals; only dirtier. It's not a complete triumph--occasionally Franks' vocals can grate, and there's a certain sameness towards the end--but it's certainly one of the most entertaining dance albums of 2003. --Matt Anniss

Album Description

Audio Bullys deliver a sound so up-front and fresh, the press have christened it with its own genre, Hooligan-house. Audio Bullys are two Londoners, Simon Franks & Tom Dinsdale. Ego War is their debut on Astralwerks and it's a two-fisted grab of ska and punk, acid-rock and UK garage, underground house, hip-hop and funk. Astralwerks. 2003.

4 out of 5 stars Vey Good CD.......2006-03-06

I remember first hearing "We Don't Care" back in the summer of 2003, and I really dug that song. I downloaded it, I listened to it often, and overall I liked it alot. However, I didn't think too much about the Audio Bullys after that. Fast forward to fall 2005 when I stumbled across a blog that had "Snake" as their background music. What do you know...it's the Audio Bullys again, and this song is even better! Apparently I had overlooked this group and basically wrote them off as a "one hit wonder" back in 2003. Now I realize that I couldn't have been more wrong; I had truly been missing out! After listening to sound samples here at Amazon, I bought this album and I love it! It's so upbeat and different from alot of the other crap that's out there today. My favorite tracks are the aforementioned and also "Real Life," "Face In A Cloud," "Veteran," and "The Snow." Check it out, and if you have the funds to do so, pick it up. I recommend it, and I also look forward to buying the new "Generation" album as well!

4 out of 5 stars A pretty humurous British rap/hip-hop album - it's pretty good.......2006-01-06

Audio Bully's "Ego War" is a pretty humurous British hip-hop album which probably won't appeal to many. "Snake" and "100 Million" are some good examples of songs that have some pretty funny lyrics. These aren't GREAT songs, but while you're listening to them they're pretty cool. The rest of the album, unfortunately, gets pretty uneven after "100 Million" (though not *too* badly). Some other good tracks scatter the remainder of the CD, most notably "The Snow", "Veteran" and "Turned Away". The album is essentially more about the lyrics then it is about the beats (though they are pretty good on occasion. "Snake" features some cool effects, too). Not many people will like it, but I suppose people who like bands like Chumbawumba and Lo-Fidelity All Stars might. Slightly recommended.

Highlights include:
"Snake"
"100 Million"
"Way Too Long" (sort of)
"Turned Away"
"We Don't Care"
"Face In A Cloud" (sort of)
"The Things" (the beat's pretty good)
"Veteran"
"The Snow"
"I Go To Your House" (a reasonably good beat)
"Hit The Ceiling" (it's decent)
"Ego War" (sort of)

5 out of 5 stars MUSICAL MAYHEM!!!.......2005-12-13

I love these guys with their British spoken raps and silly (and at times off-key) vocals--and the music ain't bad either! Audio Bullys is on the Astralwerks record label which is infamous for bringing some pretty good artists--Cassius, Basement Jaxx, et. al. These guys are no exeption...Ego War reeks of high energy, attitude and pizazz. Songs like the title track, "Turned Away", "Face in a Cloud", "The Tyson Shuffle", "The Snow" and "I Go To Your House" will get that booty bouncin' and that brow drippin' wet--these are but only a few of the songs guaranteed to do that, of course, but Ego War in its entirety is sure to keep the party jumpin' off all night long!!! Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE AUDIOBULLYS.......2005-09-30

Me and my friends heard we dont care by them when we were in high school and it was our favorite song we got our school to play it at one of our dances! There other songs are all good too and so is there new cd that comes hout this november! BUY IT!!

4 out of 5 stars The big beats are back: mashed-up punk and house.......2004-12-29

Best dancefloor record of the past few years, yes, outgunning recent releases by Basement Jaxx and Prodigy, is "Ego War." Let me explain. What the Audio Bullys [Tom Dinsdale & Simon Franks] do here is make it real dirty -- their polished blend of punk sensibility, cigarette-heavy vocals [courtesy of Simon], and dancefloor-ready loops and jams is made for Adidas- and Spiewak-wearing scenesters who want to get their "mash" on. Picking up on the recent British trend of soundclash, mixing up pop and rock records with dirty dance beats and white label remixes, the Bullys breathe in some fresh air to the British dance scene.

Their sound production is well-developed and clearly influenced by acts like Stereo MCs, Prodigy, Lo Fidelity Allstars, Midfield General and nearly anything on Skint Records. Their love of big boisterous beats and tieing them to dodgy lyrics and loops echoes through the entire CD.

The best tracks on this record are the party anthems, easily foreseeable as spins from a Fatboy Slim wannabe. "I Go to Your House" is a finger-popping shoulder-shrugger complete with smoky repetitive vocals and an almost rapped lyrical delivery. "The Snow" pushes the buttons further, kicking it into a grab-your-mates-and-the-draw kind of way, with uplifting keyboards and pumping bass. It gets dirtier on "Hit the Ceiling" where the bass throbs deeper and the commanding protagonist wails "i'm in love with you and i just can't commit myself." But, by far the dirtiest track is the leadoff single, "We Don't Care," which layers headbanging shouts of "we don't care" over electronic squeals and pounding bass.

Just about every song is good and worthwhile for the next club night, but ultimately the CD loses a star due to percussive repetitiveness and the missed opportunity to add a brilliant duet or two with vocals from someone like Liam Gallagher or Skunk Anansie. What's going for it are the interesting lyrics though - very hard to come by on any dance record. If you're looking to scouse up your collection (that means to "dirty" it up), pick up Audio Bullys.

4 out of 5 stars a Euro Blast from the Past with Futuristic Overtones.......2006-01-29

This Cd attracted me for two reasons, 1.) Because I heard the Nancy Sinatra remix at a local club by a UK DJ, Smokin' Jo, coincidentally on my birthday. It brought down a jam packed set and certainly turned me on when I went into Virgin records...which concludes me to number 2.) I sampled the whole record, as loud as I wanted, like those cliche ad's on T.V. back in the day. HAH, anyway to the album.
I have heard some songs from "Ego Trip" and I seem to think that release and this one, are a very good look into the hip-hop in London, and that there are many other white lyricists out there that don't get the full recognition, but always have the masses in the underground circut. I give this Cd a 4 because some of the songs come off as American cross-over, polished studio work. I enjoyed it fully however, mostly because of the unique, straight foward approch to bullying audio. A recommend to avid music buyers who are into euro electro.

I give this album 4 stars coz i didn't really bumpit str8 thru. I usually skip one or two, but it might be five star material to some. I can tell u one thing for sure when i got to numbers 6 and 10 I definitely had to repeat about 5 times coz those two trax are phat. The one with Yukmouth is real tight too. I like the way they used the gun cock, it blends in with the beat perfectly. 'Orange juice and a blunt for breakfast.....'
