Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba remains the only jazz album to reach number one in the pop charts. In fact, the story goes that Getz had to push for the release of Getz/Gilberto since the company did not want to compete with its own hit; it was a good thing he did. Getz/Gilberto, which featured composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, not only yielded the hit "Girl from Ipanema" (sung by Astrud Gilberto, the guitarist's wife, who had no professional experience) but also "Corcovado" ("Quiet Night")--an instant standard, and the definitive version of "Desafinado." Getz/Gilberto spent 96 weeks in the charts and won four Grammys. It remains one of those rare cases in popular music where commercial success matches artistic merit. Bossa nova's "cool" aesthetic--with its understated rhythms, rich harmonies, and slightly detached delivery--had been influenced, in part, by cool jazz. Gilberto in particular was a Stan Getz fan. Getz, with his lyricism, the bittersweet longing in his sound, and his restrained but strong swing, was the perfect fit. It just doesn't get any better.............2007-06-30

....than this. Some very good albums may define a singer; some great ones, like "Tapestry" and "No Secrets", can define a whole generation. Here, we have an album so great we could use it to define "music".

There are conflicting stories as to how this recording, or, at least, Astrud Gilberto's part in it, came to be. At this distance in time, who cares? The late Stan Getz was said to be an unpleasant man. Who cares? He was, you see, a genius, who played the sax like nobody before, or since. Astrud Gilberto supports some political causes that I can't stand. Who cares? She's the prototype of a whole genre...another may be a little prettier, or have a little better voice, but Astrud is still "the original"; all others are copies. Music and politics shouldn't mix, anyway.

Here we have a collection of talent in one place not equaled till "The Blues Brothers". Besides Getz and Astrud, we have Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud's then husband, Joao. Great music, well played, and recorded to perfection. EVERYBODY needs at least one copy of this.

Much has been said about this disc over the past nearly 45 years since it's recording and here at Amazon; mostly all positive here as the 136 reviews averaging five stars can testify to. I listened to this LP many years, off and on since it's original release and recently purchased the CD version so I may take it anywhere on my I-Pod. It goes without saying it is essential music. The understated vibe whispers classic. The pairing of Getz and Gilberto seems as natural and beautiful as sunsets on the beach on Rio de Janeiro. The soft sensual vocals of Joao and Astrud Gilberto pair well with the robust yet minimilist sax work Stan Getz to create an exquisite recording. The contribution by Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano cannot be overlooked as he helped create the total ambience. Soft romantic melodies results from the joining of these two forces in their respective fields to create the definitive bossa nova sound. The model for which bossa nova has been defined by is the quintessential "The Girl From Ipanema" features the famous duet by husband and wife Astrud and Joao Gilberto that is complimented by the cool tenor sax work by Getz twice on this disc;included is the 45rpm issue that was popular on the airwaves during the time period.It is ironic that Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim did not want her to sing on what has become arguably one of the most recognized bossa nova songs ever recorded. The total recording is a reflection of a turbulent time in the world when peaceful music waft down from Sugarloaf mountain for the world to take notice and they have never stopped noticing. Maybe in our contemporay world of war and chaos we need more of the peaceful vibe of the bossa nova again. Bossa Nova started in Brazil in the late `50s. The "First Generation" included Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto and Vinicius de Moraes as their main artists. Their themes were composed focusing on "Love, Smiles & Flowers" and greatly influenced Latin America's music and even USA's jazz composers.

The present CD was recorded in 1963 when Bossa Nova was the "new thing" mixing with Jazz and conquering USA.
Three geniuses, Joao Gilberto (guitar and vocals), Stan Getz (tenor saxophone) and "Tom" Jobim (piano and composer of eight of the ten musical pieces in the CD) join and mix their efforts to give the audience an outstanding performance.
On top of all that Astrud Gilberto sang "Girl from Ipanema" (she had never before performed professionally) and became instantly a star.
Sebastiao Neto bass and Milton Banana drums complete the musical team.

"Girl from Ipanema" make you feel being at the wonderful Ipanema Beach surrounded by the loveliest girls in the world (believe me, I've been there). Astrud's voice is just unbelievable.
I recommend hearing, enjoying and comparing this song's version with the one recorded in 1967 by Sinatra and Jobim.
"Corcovado" aka "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" evokes those wonderful starred nights from Rio de Janeiro, with all their sensual appeal, hearing soft guitar music. Getz's saxophone phrasing is just from another world!
"Para Machucar Meu Coracao" ("To Hurt my Heart" authored by Ary Barroso) is the story of a love affaire gone sour. Joao Gilberto's voice is able to express heartrending pain.

This CD is one of the Top Popular Music in my personal selection, tied up with before mentioned Jobim-Sinatra. I recommend it warmly!

Most people born in the last century have heard " The Girl from Ipanema". However, those uninitiated to jazz may have missed the total recording that launched the cabana classic. The sum total is better than its parts.

Even a language barrier is not a problem. My Spanish was not good enough to comprehend the whole recording, but it floats along to a degree that I could plug some lyrical parts and still be transfixed by the melodies. All serious jazz fans should have this as a part of their collection, and any interested in exploring couldn't go wrong by giving this a try.

I am a very big fan of Stan Getz. I think is tone is superb and this album captures him at his best. One time Stan Getz said, "He never played a note he didn't mean." This spirit is exemplified in this album.

While the sound quality might not be as good as vinyl as the reviewer below points out, the quality here is still very good. The recording is romantic and the way it was recorded captures the intimacy of the moment.

If you are a Stan Getz fan, this is a must own recording. This is a very sensuous album and the vocals are excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this for anyone who is a fan of Stan Getz.

Only SACD's capture the original master tape sound.......2005-06-09

I'm sorry, friends, after twenty years of listening, buying hundreds of CD's and an improved stereo I now know CD's don't have enough bits. They don't capture all the sound that was in the original vinyl recordings. 44k and 2 to the 14th power was NOT enough samples (bits). Like looking at an old newspaper picture made out of large dots, it's not like a photo. Like a primitive digital print without enough pixels. Poor resolution.

With 4 times as many bits (increments) in the x direction and 2 to the 8th power more bits (increments) in the Y direction, this SACD is the only format which really captures the sound of the original LP or master tape. You cannot hear the difference between this and the LP. It's the real thing.

If you thought CD's sound harsh, or bass-thin, not like a concert, well, you were right!

Beyond that, this album is the second best selling Jazz album of all time, behind Miles Davis "Kind of Blue".

Yeah it's really that good!

After I had read the previous reviews and I had listened into the songs, I decided to buy this album. It is fantastic: Gilberto concentrates on the essential, the music is not overcrowded. It is stunning, sublime. What else could I say? Listen and go for it.

I just don't get it.......2006-07-12

One by one I'm buying all Joao's CDs I can, so I should know, but this CD is beyond words -- it stands out as pure magic. I don't get it. Joao does so little with his voice -- he just whispers something smoothly, with a very limited range. And he does so little with his guitar -- he seems to have made a vow never to make a riff or an isolated note... just the chords, as if anything beyond rhythmic guitar were too sophisticated. I don't understand why it should be so effective, and why it never tires you -- music is supposed to tire you after a while, doesn't it. I just don't get it.

Sometimes referred to as The White Album (one of the few modern artists whose greatness can withstand comparison to that of the Beatles), this album was recorded sometime around 1970. Only Joao and a drummer are present, though then-girlfriend Miucha appears on one song. Somehow this album stands apart from all his others--maybe because it is so sparse, yet many of the numbers are up-tempo. He runs through "Eu Vim da Bahia" five times and makes it definitive. He brings a new and unexpected phrasing to "Aguas de Marco." He is at his most playful on "Eu Quero um Samba". And three tunes virtually do away with words altogether--"Undiu" finds him hypnotically chanting the title word, "Valsa" finds him humming a lullaby to his daughter, and an astonishing instrumental version of "Na Baixa do Sapateiro" finds him at his most dexterous on the guitar. It's a near-perfect album.

What can I say, this album is breathtaking. Totally worth the money. With jsut Joao and his guitar, each song is pensive and intimate. Especially hearing him sing a solo version of Aguas de Marco was the best.

I agree with the reviewer who stated that this music can not be referred to in the traditional 'bossa/samba' mode; although, both are present in Joao's playing here. "Eu Quero Um Samba" is, in my opinion, one of the finest examples of Joao playing his 'voz' straight off of the 'violao' and obtaining a groove that goes beyond voice, guitar, and lyric. It is that "spot" to which Jobim alluded that is reached then. "Aguas de Marco" is Joao's own masterful version of Jobim's masterpiece. Miles Davis once said that Joao would sound good reading the newspaper. This is a compliment to one of the great romantic vocalists of our time from arguably the same on trumpet. Interestingly, for a comparison of some of these same tunes, many of the same songs are on the "Best of Both Worlds" recording with Stan Getz, which was released in 1976, and features Chico Buarque's sister - Heloisa - on English vocals. I have to admit to liking "Izaura" much better on the CD I am now reviewing: Joao changes the harmony on the bridge here and the effect is electric. On the "Both Worlds" recording, Getz was either improperly recorded or having a tough time, since "the Sound" just is not there. That said, he does grab a hold of some great licks - especially on "Falsa Bahiana". No, I will not review that here, but it makes me wonder if perhaps Joao was not quite satisfied with the 1976 effort...seeing that many of the tunes are re-done, and done better, frankly, on this recording.

Joao Gilberto (b. 1931) first came on to the scene with his debut album of 1958 titled "Chega de Saudade", introducing a new style of jazz samba called bossa nova. Gilberto is credited as the innovator of the bossa nova sound that sprung to life out of Brazil. We all likely own the 1965 classic Getz/Gilberto album, featuring his then wife Astrud on vocals along with Stan Getz and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

This album is good to own because you get two albums for the price of one, Gilberto's "Amoroso" (1976) and "Brasil" (1981). These albums showcase Joao in his prime, vibrant and full of life. "Brasil" is a much more accessible album to listen to than the previous selection, and showcases fellow Brazilian musicians Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso. What an album to relax to and forget about life.

Bossa Nova rocks.......2006-03-24

This cd was the first of many brazilian bossa novas I've bought. I heard the Girl from Ipanema on a complilation jazz cd and was hooked then. I don't aggree w/ the above reviewers who don't like the orchestral arrangements? Are you nuts? This album is fantastic! Its actually two albums, and I love every song. I grew up listening to mostly r/b and this style is second only to that for me.
I had never heard music so beautiful as in (portueguese'.) One of my professors suggested that I give a listen to international music, boy was she right.
I have migraines so I put on Joao/Astrud/Stan Getz to relax and release the pain. They are all so soothing and enjoyable. I also suggest you get" Getz/Gilberto: live at Carnegie Hall" Astrud appears on it as well. Antonio Carlos Jobim: Wave, "Brazilian Romance" all by Verve records.

A masterpiece PLUS a great album.......2004-07-10

As many reviewers have said, tracks 9-14 are worth the price of the album. These tracks are simply astonishing. I first heard three or four of them over the internet and on various mix CDs that my friends had. I was drawn to "Aquarela do Brasil" and "Disse Alguem" especially, and you could tell that it was the same session. I told myself I had to find such an album. (You see Mr. Record Company, many file sharers do go out and buy CDs!)

Wasn't I suprised to find the Brasil album (tracks 9-14) together with Amoroso (1-8). Maybe I'm a little more used to sappy strings than some other people, but they don't bother me so much. Heck, as long as I can hear Joao's voz e violao, I'm a happy man.

If the somewhat negative reviews of the first half of the CD are making some of you hesitant to purchase this wonderful music, I need only remind you that some people buy a disc for only one song. Well, here you're gonna find six wonderful ones for sure, and maybe a few more, depending on your taste in strings.

Yes, Joao Gilberto Singing.......2004-05-22

I've heard that Mr. Gilberto, being very shy and a little strange, would not go into the studio for Amoroso, so they went to his house to record and he sang and played in his pajamas. Then Claus came along and added the quite wonderful arrangements afterwards. Perhaps that explains the slight out of synch feel.

But when all is said and done there is no other like Joao Gilberto. Joao liked Fred Astaire. Another one of a kind. If you have not heard Amoroso go get it! In 1977 Joao gave a one man show at the Roxy, Sunset Strip plugging Amoroso. Two sets, two days. After the first set the management was begging the audiance to stay free for the second. (Wouldn't that be nice today.) On all four sets Joao's first encore was S'Wonderful "that you should care for me." He sang O Pato for me. How he gets to the "heart of the matter." What more?

"Brasil" is essential.......2004-01-14

This CD includes two of João Gilberto's albums: Amoroso (1977) on tracks 1-8, and the tiny Brasil (1981) from 9-14. I could assign this CD 5 stars simply in virtue of the second part; it is worth getting the whole CD just for those 6 tracks.

I agree with the opinion below that Claus Ogerman's orchestral arrangements really do a disservice to Amoroso. To my ear, having heard many other of Gilberto's recordings, Ogerman just doesn't "get it"; his arrangements sometimes seem to me to undermine Gilberto's way of developing the song. For me the most annoying example is comparing "Zingaro" in this album with the live version in Gilberto's live Montreux CD (there it's titled "Retrato em Branco e Preto"). In the live version, João's interpretation builds up a lot of tension in the verses; in the studio version, Ogerman's arrangements utterly destroy this tension. Really, the only song where I think the orchestral arrangements adds anything is "Tin Tin Por Tin Tin". I my João Gilberto stars scale, Amoroso gets three stars (which translates into about four stars in my lesser artists scale).

The second album included in the CD, Brasil, is a whole another story. This has got to be some of the gentlest and most delightful music ever recorded. On this album Gilberto is accompanied by fellow Brazilian stars Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Maria Bethania. This album is very fundamentally about the contrast between the voices; the most common arrangement is to have them take turns in singing the verses of the song one after the other, almost impossibly softly, each with their own subtly different phrasing. In the context of this incredibly quiet album, the phrasing differences stand out quite dramatically for those who listen for them. One really gets to hear these familiar people's voices in a new way by juxtaposing them. (I can imagine, however, that familiarity with the artists helps in appreciating this album.)

Admirably Straight-Forward.......2006-06-18

This is a simple, yet intimate album. It sounds like what you might hear had you Joao Gilberto over for drinks and got him to play his guitar for a half hour. I am not very familiar with Joao Gilberto's music (I am better acquainted with his ex-wife Astrud's). Mostly what I know of him is from the classic Getz-Gilberto album. But if this album is any indication, Joao's talent has not diminished since the 1960s. He made a wise artistic choice here and recorded these tracks with just him on guitar and singing. No drums, sythns, or strings. Most of the songs I was unfamiliar with, other than the classic Desafinado. Perhaps great musicians of the 1960s can never really recapture the sound they had perfected back then, whether it be Joao Gilberto, Bob Dylan, or Paul McCartney. What does come through here is the charm of a great musician standing alone. This is not a long album or an ambitious one, but it is an honest one, and one that you will not tire of listening to. A good choice for bossa nova fans.

I've taken a discovery dive into the wonderworld of Brazilian music, which was mostly unbeknowst to me, even being Brazilian myself. From all the different genres and musical movements I've researched, bossa nova is by far the most inspired. It was the most creative ever made in this country and I think nothing better will ever be done. To listen to any given bossa nova song is to look at a snapshot of the Brazilian soul. And this was the first bossa nova record I bought. I'm looking forward to buying Gilberto's earlier, orchestrated work, part of which I've listened to on the internet, but for me, this is really what his music is all about: voice, guitar, and silence. Any bossa nova fan should buy this. By the way, I strongly disagree with those who call bossa nova "chill out" music. The interpretation of "Coração Vagabundo" in this album is one of the most angsty, sad songs I've ever heard, and "Chega de Saudade" is a wonderful bittersweet tale and I love João Gilberto's rendition of it, especially the guitar rythm.

Zen Baiano's voice will never be the same again..........2004-03-30

Joao has remained the same romantic crooner that he was 40 years ago, but his voice is not the same... it's natural it won't ever be the same, our beloved Zen Baiano is getting on... The arrangements somewhat lack expression, they produce and impression of drowsiness. However I have to admit such arrangement is quite good in Eclipse (perhaps the best song of the disk, it's gently swinging like the reflection of the moon on the water). I also enjoyed Da Cor do Pecado, a lovely, sensual tune... But the overall impression is that his best times are gone.

Joao rocks!.......2004-03-03

But seriously, this is a really nice record. It's only thirty minutes long, but it's just about the right length. I hope that when I'm in my late 60s my meager abilities are half as in tact as Gilberto's considerable ones have remained, fully; his voice and guitar playing are strong, persuasive, and soothing. One of my family members remarked that this is good sleeping music, and, yeah, I guess so, but I get pretty inspired by the stuff. For me it's an eye-opener, something to get exciting about. But maybe I'm just easily excitable. Give yourself a gift and try out Joao Gilberto (and Jobim and Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento . . .).

I used to lay in bed and sweat, thinking, another day had gone by and I still hadn't found or purchased a CD of Herbie Mann & Joao Gilberto With Antonio Carlos Jobim.

It was in the stores for a short time and I let it slip through my fingers, and then, along came Amazon to the rescue.

The CD was delivered to my doorstep, I can hold it in my hand, I can catch up on my sleep!

Darn, Vinyl.

I was worried I was never going to hear the tracks without scratches or pops in the background.

Amazon put an end to that!

I once heard, a number of songs written by Gilberto and Jobim around the time of this recording, became so popular in Brazil, they were sung at half time during soccer games like they were National Anthems.

Please tell me this is so.

Thanks to Amazon, I have retired my old LP, no more sctratches and pops!

The only thing is, the songs go around and around in my head like a broken record.

Trouble in Paradise.

I hope, someday, you too, will hold a copy of these legendary recordings in your hand, and share them with your family and friends.

Subtle Pleasures.......2006-02-23

This is part of the "first U.S. wave" of Bossa Nova music. It relies heavily on Antonio Carlos Jobim who wrote some of the most beautiful music and sits in on several cuts. No, this is not another reprise of The Girl From Ipanema, but you will probably recognize one or two of the songs, and like those lyrics the music "swings so cool and sways so gentle." Mann and Gilberto travel in separate circles, but they both understand what Bossa Nova is about and whether you are on the floor close-dancin' or kicking back with a cool one, this music should please.

A treasure.......2003-07-03

Herbie Mann's flute, Gilberto's voice, and Jobim's piano work make this a wonderful addition to any Brazilian jazz fan's discography. It's a bit pricy and for not a lot of music, but what you get it worth it. I think Herbie Mann's songs really stand out. You can just feel the ocean breeze while you hear the songs. A well done CD.

The golden era of jazz-bossa nova.......2000-04-02

This album is a classic of the jazz/bossa nova golden period. Same as Do the Bossa Nova, it was recorded in Rio de Janeiro with Brazilian artists. It included João Gilberto - who Miles Davis said "would sound good reading a newspaper" - the guitarist Baden Powell and Tom Jobim himself,author of several songs in the album and responsible for most of the wonderful arrangements, some piano playing and the vocal in One Note Samba. In two instrumental tracks Mann and Powell are alone in marvelous duets: listen how in Consolação the flute soars above the delicate phrasing of the guitar in a haunting effect!

Mix of Gilberto and Mann.......2000-02-29

This contains some of Joao Gilberto's original Odeon recordings, among them "Desafinado", mixed with bossa nova songs recorded by Herbie Mann together with brazilian musicians in Rio, around 1964. The Gilberto tracks are classics, and the tracks, that Mann plays on, are also nice. The most notable of the Mann tracks, is probably a version of "One Note Samba", that includes Antonio Carlos Jobim playing the piano and singing the english lyrics of the song.

Late night Bird?.......2007-01-26

There is an implied mellow or introspective mood with an album called LATE NIGHT JAZZ. Such dreamy feelings are well-established on this collection until Charlie Parker jars us from our reveries and gets the cops banging on the door with his blaring and raucous rendition of "Night And Day." This jolt halfway through the set is enough to give a ferret insomnia!

Except for that one misstep (and a quick poke-in-the-ribs crescendo on "Body And Soul"), LATE NIGHT JAZZ consistently delivers perfect wee small hours music, as performed by some of the best names in mid-20th century jazz. Transfer quality here is top notch-- songs are full-length. No liner notes beyond a playlist.

This is one of my top 10 recordings of all time. It is History. Seeing that it is live, it is incredible...and absolutely All of the music recorded that wonderful day should be made available. How many artists can bring a packed audience to such heights with such gentleness and such grace? Very few. The way in which Joao so playfully gets the audience to join him in "Felicidade", and the utter soul-baring in "Estate" are two examples of what a true classic this is. Joao even makes "Garota de Ipanema" sound fresh and like the true classic it always will be. The booklet includes lyrics both Portugese (and Italian in the case of "Estate") with English translation. I could write a book, but just get this and hear Live Magic for yourself.

Like Thelonious Monk, like Erroll Garner, Joao Gilberto has done little to change his style over the course of his musical life. I saw him play a month ago in San Francisco, and at age 73, all that has really changed is his voice, now colored by age, but not even a great deal. He still plays with tremendous focus and ability. And, like Basie's American swing or Django's European swing, he has his own swing which is purely Brazilian and purely Gilberto. And he still prefers to be his own band, dropping even the spare drums he had in the 60s and 70s. The Montreux show is outstanding. The crowd is very receptive, and usually interrupt the first few seconds of a famous song with applause. It's a strange tradition. In typical Gilberto fashion, he mixes the oldies with some newer songs, most notably Caetano Veloso's "Menino do Rio." The other highlights (though there really aren't any lowlights) are "Morena Boca de Ouro," "Pra Que Discutir com Madame," "Sem Compromisso" and "Preconceito."

The best... I'm not even a Bossa Nova fan but this CD kept me into it from the first track to the last! It is extremely relaxing and at the same time gives you an incredible eager to move.
You will be captivated by this amazing CD, especially "Sandalia de Prata", "Pra que discutir com Madame", "Adeus America" and the immortal "Garota de Ipanema".

Stan the immortal .......2006-08-30

I have many many Stan Getz cds. I treasure this box set since 1990 I guess the year that I bought it. I know it by memory now, but nevertheless it always sounds fresh and superb. The quality of the music contained here can't be underestimated maybe only because it had success (something that jazz purist often do, critizise a music only because it sold big numbers). This music is something that words can't do justice. The encounter between Stan Getz and bossa nova and its artists was made in Heaven. Here superlatives are not enough believe us (believe to me and to all the other enthusiastic reviewers). It's a music so beautiful, so perfect that it flows with a divine smoothness. This music seems easy to uneducated people and they may even appreciate it just because it sounds so "simple". But it seems easy only because the musicians who played this music, Stan first, are unbelievable, superb artists. This music is amazing and really, can't change the face of a lot of your days. A lot of people allready told you what you can find here. Everything Stan recorded in bossa fashion. I only want to say that this box has inside itself a lot of happiness that the amazing music Stan and the others who played it will give you for years and years to come. Think about this, money are only paper. This box will send you shivers down your spine for years and will be a pure emotion each time you'll listen to it. What would you choose .. to have a bigger wallet or to be a happier person? I'd pay probably 1000 dollars for this music if it would be the only way to own it.

Wow, Did I Get Lucky.......2002-09-20

Ran into this a couple years ago at the public library and hit the Bossa Nova mother lode. Realized that it would make a perfect gift and serendipitously found it on special sale. Should've bought all the copies I could!

This has to be one of the best box sets ever, both from a musical and an archival point of view. Since the other reviewers have described so well the contents of this collection, I only want to exhort you, the prospective buyer, to keep a sharp eye out for an opportunity to grab it at a favorable price.

In the meantime, let's hope Verve prints more copies. This is music that will never go out of style.

Proof there is a God........2001-07-20

There is a line here sung by Astrud Gilberto (from an American song, but never mind) - 'I feel so gay in a melancholy way' - that sums up for me the eternal appeal of bossa nova: beach music cooled with sadness that somehow seizes your tired soul, making it feel warm and happy.

This remarkable set - which, along with 'the Antonio Carlos Jobim Songbook', is the only CD I intend to take to my desert island - contains the five prodigious bossa nova albums recorded by Stan Getz in the early 60s: 'Jazz Samba' (the still sparkle-fresh collaboration with Charlie Byrd that introduced bossa nova to the world); 'Big Band Bossa Nova' (a not always successful attempt to combine two mutually exclusive forms, but featuring two epic classics, 'Manha de Carnival' and 'Chega Suadade'); 'Jazz Samba Encore' (an otherworldly masterpiece with Luiz 'Black Orpheus' Bonfa and singer Maria Toldo); 'Getz/Gilberto' (my own treasured favourite, a matchless meeting of four great talents, Getz, Jobim, Joao and Astrud Gilberto) and 'Getz/Almeida' (a rigorous, last gasp jazz workout).

All the great classics are here - 'Desafinado' (will anyone ever spell this right?), 'Insensatez' (swoon), 'O Morro Nao Tem Vez', 'One note samba', 'The girl from Ipanema', 'Corcovado' etc. (you'll know them all even if you think you don't) - together with some less familiar delights. What is perhaps most exceptional is the way Getz adapts like a chameleon to the very different needs of his various collaborators, and yet still retains the distinctive, emotional sax genius we know and love.

There are some extra tracks included as well, including Getz's only collaboration with Baden-Powell, some live numbers with the Gilbertos, and an absolutely blissful, happysad 'It might as well be spring', the only track I've ever heard that actually DOES sound like spring.

Quiet Nights or Anytime.......2001-01-25

I've had a copy of this wonderful collection in my possesion in one form or another for the last thirteen years. Once I finally threw out the tattered cassettes, I moved on to this four CD set. I can't praise it enough. It's not just the well known favorites like Girl From Ipanema or Desafinado, but the whole anthology. From the quiet tones of Corcovado to Stan's incredile blowing on So Danco Samba, there's something great on nearly every track. I'm only 31 and I've introduced this CD to the boom box on many occasions around my friends more accustomed to Pearl Jam or old Ozzy and the reaction has always been the same; "Is this elevator music?" But soon they hear the same passionate soul that nearly knocked the Beatles off the top of the charts in the mid '60s (read Phil Schaap's liner notes!) and realize that there's something special here and begin to really enjoy it. It's a warm Summer barbecue or any time you need to kick up your feet after a hard day at work with a cold drink. This is something with which to either complete or begin your samba collection.

All The Great Bosa Nova Recordings Under One Roof.......2001-01-11

After having having foolishly traded away my vinyl copy, (origianlly released on 5 LP's) I was delighted to find this CD reissue. This is the only place to find Getz's entire Verve output of Samba and Bosa Nova recordings. The first disc is comprised of Getz's collaboration with the late great Jazz/Samba guitarist, Charlie Byrd and contains the classic Antonio Carlos Jobim compostion, Desafino. Disc two finds Getz in the company of Brizil's premier Samba vocalist Joao Gilberto. The combination of Getz's velvety smooth tenor and Gilberto's elegantly cool vocal stylings makes for an astonishing match made in Samba Heaven. Songs from this historic pairing include the highly recognizable The Girl From Impanema and the hypnotic Samba De Uma Nota So, (One Note Samba).

Disc three covers the Getz/Astrid Gilberto hits and includes the lovely Corcovado and It Might As Well Be Spring as well as the enormous international hit, The Girl From Impanema, (not to be confused with the Getz/Joao Gilberto version). This is the recording that put Bosa Nova on the map and caused a huge sensation from Brazil to Japan and all stops in between. As undeniably the biggest hit ever to come out of South America, The Girl From Impenema has been recorded by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Ella Fitzgerald. The many other highlights found here include Getz in the company of an allstar jazz lineup on the Big Band Bosa Nova sides. While this may be too much material for the casual fan to digest, I suggest you begin with the Getz/Joao Gilberto album. If you find yourself hooked and yearning for more, go directly to this anthology it's worth the time and money.

2 greats, one shows up.......2007-07-14

I knew a lady whom Joao stayed with her family (she was 13 at the time)during the recording of this record. She said that Joao was furious when he heard the mix. There is Joao, understated and superbly craftsmanly and self-contained, then the sax solos kick in at a level that seems twice as loud as Joao's performance, as if he were a blank pad for scribbling saxophone- a disgusting display of egotism and lack of respect. I give this 3 stars because I worship Joao, but through no fault of his own, this is his worst record.

Underrated.......2005-09-20

This also has been a favorite of mine for thirty years. There are flaws but also many gems. Getz may have been in a bad way but his solos flow perfectly with the music. Gilberto is a joy as always.

Getz phones it in.......2004-12-20

After "Getz/Gilberto" the second best selling Jazz album of all time behind "Kind of Blue", the record companies were anxious for another golden egg.

However this is one of the worst periods in Stan Getz life, the 70's. Personal problems, and he was locked in the the bitterest divorce case in history, went to the Supreme Court! Things added to his orange juice...

Joao Gilberto also has a good reason to have a grudge against Getz but it doesn't show here, he is as mellow as usual. A trooper. His singing and guitar & Heloise hold the day, while Getz pretty much phones it in. What's good on this album comes from him.

For better Getz, pick any other decade or his life. For some reason all of the Getz Columia recordings are really bass thin and harsh. This one is less so, but no exception.

Great Music, Horrible Production.......2004-09-11

I don't think the playing is as poor as others have claimed, but the production quality is just miserable. I can't believe that Columbia can't re-master this and at least take out the most obvious flaws in volume, "muddy-ness," etc. I'd be happy to buy it again if it sounded better!

desert island disc.......2004-01-07

I've been listening to this album for over twenty years and it never loses its appeal. It ranks among my personal top ten albums and remains as fresh and engaging as it did when I first heard it. I can't recommend this highly enough (and really don't understand what the other reviewer meant by problems with volume - maybe he had a bad disc?). Buy this CD - you won't regret it.
