Fourteen years, a live CD/DVD, some solo albums, and one tragic suicide after Crowded House's last release comes this highly anticipated reunion. Singer/songwriter Neil Finn and bassist Nick Seymour reunited after the 2005 death of drummer Paul Hester, brought in a new member and two producers (Ethan Johns and Steve Lillywhite) to replace longtime cohort Mitchell Froom, and the impressive result is a logical and overdue addition to the band's previous four albums. Finn's knack for a melodic ballad remains firmly in place as Time on Earth coasts on his dreamy voice and introspective, hook-laden pop choruses. However, this is a more reflective collection that requires a few spins to fully reveal its charms. Finn co-writes "Even a Child" with Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, and that and the frisky "She Called Up" are the most buoyant tracks on this predominantly pensive disc. Finn has generally shaded towards a darker edge and this hour-long set might have benefited from more of the lighter touch he applies to "Transit Lounge," a song enhanced by Beth Rowley's lovely and startling wordless vocals along with jazzy electric piano and even airport sound effects. Strings, sitar, and intricate production add subtle elements that bolster the timeless musical qualities Finn has always reveled in. The ominous, even brooding "Silent House," a co-write with all three Dixie Chicks, is another highlight that sounds like nothing either has done before as it floats along on fuzz guitar and hurdy-gurdy, both courtesy of Johns. Trimming some weaker cuts would have made this a more focused listen, but Time on Earth is a worthy successor to Crowded House's existing catalog--a high compliment indeed. --Hal Horowitz

It's hard to articulate how good this disc is. If you're a fan of melodic and smart pop/rock, you will love this album. Neil Finn is at the very top of his game, and the songs are more stick-to-your-ribs hooky than the last few of his efforts. I bought this three days ago and have sat and listened to it front-to-end six times since. That's extremely rare these days!

More of the Excellence You've Come To Expect.......2007-07-13

When I heard in 2006 that Neil Finn's planned next solo album was going to be a Crowed House album, I was a little disappointed. Owning CH albums, Split Enz albums, and the two Finn Brothers albums, I ultimately find Neil Finn's solo material (_Try Whistling This_ & _One Nil_) to be his best work. However, since this is Neil Finn we're talking about--easily one of pop music's best songwriters--regardless of what name was going to be on the album, it would likely be up to par with his previous work. However, stacked up against such phenomenal post-CH work, _Time on Earth_ does ultimately dissapoint a little bit.

Lyrically, the suicide of original drummer Paul Hester looms over nearly the entire album. From the beautiful opener "Nobody Wants To" to the Split Enz-like "She Called Up" to the plaintive "Silent House," Neil Finn is clearly mourning within this material. The first half of the album is just as good as anything Crowded House has done, with "Pour Le Monde" being another stunning, melancholy work of songwriting genius that fans have come to expect from Finn ("he imagines the world/as the angel ascending/like the ghost of a man/who is tied up to the chair/and he tries to believe/that his life has a meaning/with his hand on his heart"). About midway through the album, the momentum slows down a bit. "Heaven That I'm Making," co-written with Johnny Marr sounds like something that might've made it onto _One Nil_, but fails to make much of an impression, and is followed by the pretty, but again, slightly lackluster "A Sigh." Along with "Silent House," "A Sigh" sounds like something more from the "Rain" movie score that Finn was involved with a few years ago than a CH or Finn album--very subtle, low-key, lo-fi offerings. "English Trees" continues the pretty, plaintive, reflective mood that dominates the middle of the album before jumping back into the upbeat, mysterious "She Walked Her Way Down" ("and i know what the answer is/but i'm happy to be here tonight/and when you're in the moment/everything you want is right"). "Transit Lounge" sounds like the experimental side of Neil Finn' solo work and is one of the best, freshest sounding songs on the album. Closing out the album are two more low-key and subtle songs--"You Are The One To Make Me Cry" and "People Are Like Suns." Closers on albums that Finn is involved with--"Together Alone," "Addicted," "Into The Sunset," "Gentle Hum"--are usually breathtakingly beautiful. "People Are Like Suns" does not match the heights achieved by those songs, but it comes close, ending the album with the "appreciate every moment" theme that is displayed on this CH album in the wake of Paul Hester's death: "better take all the love that you got in a single hand...." People are like suns..."they come and they go...."

_Time On Earth_ is another great album to add to your Crowded House collection. It's a far more subtle offering than _Woodface_ or _Together Alone_, but it rewards the listener more and more with repeated listenings. Fans of Finn's prior work will not be disappointed.

I am in complete agreement with Vinzo: this is a masterpiece. Finn is only getting better, each song is perfectly constructed and a joy to listen to. i've listened through it 3 times in 24 hours and can't wait to hear it again. been a long time since any recording felt like "somethin so right" to me, so to speak. i like a lot of new records, and love some, but getting through them in their entirety more than once the first day - i can't remember the last time that happened.

the band sound great and the production is cleaner, less thick, than the very fine finn brothers album. sure sounds like a crowded house album to me!

where I disagree with other reviewers is in how accessable this is. i found it immediately so - I was on it from the 1st measure and found every song very straight ahead and perfectly neil finn/crowded house-ish. a few choice surprise sonic nuggets here and there, but hard to get used to? no way.

I agree Vinzo, it really is THAT good. a perfect ten!!!

Haunting and Brilliant.......2007-07-10

Time on Earth is a masterpiece. Not as immediately accessible as the earlier Crowded House ablums, this one has so many very special moments. There is so much "home" to the new Crowded House. I continue to be amazed at what a great songwriter Neil Finn is. He allows his beautiful voice to show the pain he has suffered with the loss of Paul Hester. Listen to the gorgeous "Pour Le Monde" and "People are Like Suns", they are stunning and haunting lyrically, musically and vocally. Also, the background vocals throughout this album are remarkable and beautifully realized.

This is one of those albums which will be recognized as a classic many years from now. It is the Abbey Road for Crowded House (the Beatle reference is intentional). Great songs, gorgeous vocals, beautiful production, great band. Time on Earth is the album of the year and may be Neil Finn's masterpiece. Yes, it is that good.

First up, I'd suggest listening to the samples provided here to see if this terrific Crowded House album is going to be for you. It doesn't sound like anything Neil's done with the band before (although it does recall "Temple of Low Men" and "Together Alone" in terms of its mood). Fans will love this album which builds subtly, over many listens. It is worming its way into my list top albums for this year. Neil is reflective on the changes in his life. Some of the tunes on here are some of the most catchy of his career. He also co-writes a tune with former Smith Johnny Marr (the chiming "Even a Child")and one with The Dixie Chicks. Neil continues to be one of the finest songwriters of his generation and he won't let down fans with this release either.

One thing that Neil Finn never does is make the same album twice. Crowded House fans will find that "Time on Earth" grows on you and isn't as instantly memorable as "Woodface" but is equally as powerful and memorable. In fact, this album reminds me more of the follow up to the band's popular "Woodface" album, "Together Alone"; the melodies are touched with melancholy. You can't help but feel that the death of Paul Hester (the band's original drummer, occasional songwriter and friend of Neil's since the end of Split Enz), middle age and changes in Neil's personal life informed this terrific album. As always, Neil demonstrates a knack for writing memorable melodies and thoughtful, deeply felt lyrics that rank among the best out there. Neil's more experimental solo albums have also impacted this album as well (they departed from the "formula" of Crowded House)and since this was, initially, going to be a solo album it's not a surprise that this album's low key charm and musically adventurous touches are in line with what was on Neil's most recent pair of solo recordings.

Nevertheless, this IS a Crowded House album and brims with all the wit, songwriting skill and hooks that Neil and his band are known for. In fact one of the most interesting aspects of this album is the collison between the "style" that Neil established on his solo albums, the pair he made with his brother Tim and the Crowded House sound. It reinvigorates the album making it a unique and enjoyable follow up to "Together Alone" (the band's last full studio album. I'm not counting "Afterglow" since it was made up of b-sides and tracks that weren't used for the original version of "Woodface").

For those interested there is an import with a DVD of live performances. Also, the first single has two songs not included here plus some live tracks as well. Unfortunately the deluxe edition with the DVD hasn't been released in the United States as of this date.

Absolutely the #1 Neil Young Album.......2007-07-13

Because of this album, I have become a compulsive Neil Young freak. This is the CD that made me compulsive about the guy (and anyone he worked with). Buy it. NOW.

I have always liked Neil Young, but this album puts him in an entirely new light for me. I used to think of him as a subpar Dylan -- nice tunes, distinctive homey voice, not as prolific. All of that changed with Massey Hall's release. It is mesmerizing. The sound quality is truly audiophile -- how did they DO that? The album is so good it forced me to study Neil and his art in depth.

Having studied his work now, I'd now put Neil Young on par with Lennon/McCartney, Bob Dylan and George Harrison as a singer-songwriter. Most would disagree with me, but I would now put him even above Bob Dylan, for the simple reason that Neil Young has never lost a step in 40 years. Even the "dark years" produced wonderful albums. The songs here are simply stunning. They will literally bring tears to your eyes.

The DVD is worth having because it has a few interesting interviews -- especially the one with the "Old Man."

Neil - what's the deal?.......2007-06-24

Here's the skinny on the DVD: The extra features, such as a clip from Neil performing 2 songs on "the Johnny Cash show" and the footage of Neil on his ranch with the hired hand that inspired the song "Old Man", are pretty cool. But I began to notice subtle differnces in the audio and the video (very subtle - but they're there). Then it hit me: The video is NOT the same performance as the audio track. That's why there is no video footage of the portions where Neil is speaking to the audience and on quite a few of the songs as well. The video of this Massey Hall show doesn't exist.
This is what I would expect from a bootleg. Why Neil Young feels the need to market a con such as these (see the reviews on the Filmore East show) is beyond me. But I still love him...

CD GREAT-DVD, FORGET IT.......2007-06-18

Short, sweet and to the point. The concert at Massey Hall is a Neil Young acoustical classic. A lot of songs that were new at the time and have since become classics along with a few old favorites.

Unless you just have to have everything by Neil Young, just get the CD - you can live without the DVD. Out of 68 minutes, a repeat of the CD, you get - if you're lucky, maybe 20 minutes of poorly photographed concert footage. And what's the remainder? If you're stoned and really get your jollies in watching a film of tape recorder taping the concert, you'll truly enjoy the DVD. Yep, that's the bulk of the DVD - a tape recorder recording the concert with Neil singing in the background. And from the looks of the surroundings, the tape recorder isn't even at Massey Hall, but probably somewhere else.

A truly great CD which belongs in the collection of every Neil Young fan. You can live without the DVD and not miss a thing. Take the money you'll save by purchasing just the CD sans DVD and buy another Neil Young album.

Poor quality video, excellent audio.......2007-06-15

I bought the CD/DVD combination, because I was interested in seeing the concert. Unfortunately, the video quality is spotty and for some of the songs there is no video at all, just a view of some instruments.

The audio quality is fine, and Neil sounds so young! It's a joy to listen to...Enjoy.

CD pefection, DVD rejection.......2007-06-14

Ok, so maybe the DVD isn't a complete reject. The footage of Neil at his ranch and that of the "Old Man" is just fabulous. Also, Neil on stage in that wonderful flannel shirt is precious. That being said, I can only watch a reel to reel tape recorder spinning around for just so long. Talk about space filling!
The CD part of this duo, however, is some of the finest early Neil available. I have a ton of bootleg LPs and nothing comes close to this. The sound quality and play list is outstanding. It's a real gem. Too bad that the packaging is so poor. The cheap cardboard sleeve will no doubt scratch the discs. Inside is a fragment of a newspaper review of the concert (man, I wish I had a time machine!) which the designers of this
CD/DVD package felt we would not be interest in reading. That's a shame.

Loaded with lyrics about nightmares, pain, isolation and broken relationships, One X, the sophomore effort from Three Days Grace should be a downright bummer of a ride. Instead, the listener manages to find uplift lurking beneath the weighty lyrics as the quartet churns out a series of anthemic, crunch-chord songs. The band moves from arena-ready light metal with "It's All Over" to the sex groove of "Animal I Have Become," before plunging the listener into full-on chaotic heaviness during the anti-alienation anthem "Riot" and easing us into the atmospheric future hit "Get Out Alive." Throughout, TDG remains true to its core alt-metal sound. While that sound has been called unimaginative and unoriginal and at times does feel a little too familiar, the material on One X is never less than convincing and it packs a serious and stinging rock `n' roll punch track after track. --Jedd Beaudoin

Alot of bands choke on the 2nd effort especially after a smashing debut due to touring and other creative inhibitors, but this band stands out far above anything else on the radio...this album rocks and I don't care what anybody says, these dudes are talented as hell and write catchy tunes. This cd is a CLASSIC.... nuff said

The band is excellent. They are good musicians and play tightly together. The problem is the lyrics are awful. This is nothing less than nightmares set to music. If you have these same thoughts running through your head, seek some professional psychiatric help. Absolutely not recommended for young listeners. Parents you are warned. No wonder the record industry is on the ropes.

My Favorite CD
Three Days Grace is not only for one group of people. A lot of people I know and people I don't know love Three Days Grace.Rockers, punk, and the girls scream for them. I went to their concert when they came to buffalo and they were sweet. I never heard a band that sounded just as good live as they are on the CD.Here are some of there songs: Are You Ready, Pain, Never Too late, Just Like You, I Hate Everything About You, and tons more.
When I first listened to the CD I never stopped.In my opinion this CD is amazing and I can't wait until they make another one.I play the drums and when I heard the drummer I was BLOWN away.
I recommend this CD to everyone who is willing to listen to something new.You will be impressed,Even my mom loves them.

I like the CD One X by Three Days Grace. This CD has 12 songs on it. These songs are about 3 minutes long. Three Days Grace is a Canadian band. I like the songs Riot, One X and all the other song on the CD. There is some swearing in three of the songs. My opinion of this CD would be a 10 out of 10. I love this CD so much that I downloaded it on my I pod. I would recommend this CD to kids that are older than 12 because of the swearing. I would also recommend this CD to people that like rock music

Classic Neil in his Prime!.......2007-06-03

Whether you are a Neil Young fan or not, this is a 'must hear' live recording for anyone who loves great folk music! The lyrics and melodies are both pensive and mirthful, taking you back to a simpler time when life and love was easier to contemplate. Neil's trademark stiletto-falsetto-like voice was beginning to peak, piercing your heart gently with melancholic honesty and sincerity. I have been a fan of his most of my life and, although I have enjoyed hearing Neil's later albums and how his talent has evolved through the years, (IMHO) nothing compares to his solo seventies creations! Thanks, Neil, for reminding us once again how music can touch our soul and be a soothing constant in this mad, erratic world.

An Intimate Experience With Neil Young Live.......2007-05-27

The Cd opens to the sound of applause. The first song, "On The Way Home" sets the tone for the following 16 songs. Being a huge Neil Young fan, this is the CD you don't want to miss. When he introduces his "new" songs like "Old Man," I get chills. Amazing vocals combined with an adoring live audience, makes this an intimate listening experience that is beyond awesome. If I couldn't be there, this is the next best thing. He finishes the set with a humble rendition of, "I am a Child." His voice is sweet & sincere and takes me back to another time, the senenties. Also, having my own child now, I found the lyrics particularly profound. If you love Young, you'll love this CD.

This is probably one of the most honest and true live recordings in my collection; just Neil with guitar and piano. The performance is top notch, and the sound just soars; perfect blend! Some real highlights are the piano performance of "Heart of Gold", the soft and mysterious "Old Man" and of course, the first two tracks, which reach back to where Neil came from with Buffalo Springfield, and where he "currently" was during the After The Goldrush album. The album is a great bridge between the electric Neil and the Harvest sound he'd record later in the year.

One question would be: What took him so long? After all, a contemporary like Van Morrison has sold boatloads of his single-disc best-of set to buyers wary of diving into that deep catalog without a primer to get them started. So three and a half decades into his solo career, Neil Young finally delivers his version of that most modest of albums--the pre-holiday "hits" overview. What's surprising, coming from such a proud maverick, is its conventionality. Granted, the original master mixes are a boon for fans, but otherwise, there's not much here for loyalists who quite likely already possess the original "Like a Hurricane" on a couple of albums, as well as a handful of live interpretations scanning the years. Since Young cracked the Top 10 only once (1972's "Heart of Gold"), this set is built around concert staples as "Cinnamon Girl," "Rockin' in the Free World," and "Hey, Hey, My My" rather than chart favorites. Despite Young's honorable standing as a still-vital graybeard, the disc is skewed heavily toward his early work, shortchanging some mighty productive recent years. Peripheral fans may find this set of interest, but faithful followers are better advised to investigate the DVD version, which, at least, includes videos, photos, lyrics, and Web links. --Steven Stolder

This recording is distorted and it sounds as if he is singing with helium. Even the newer tracks sound as if they were recorded analog with outdated equipment. Many people are not aware that Mr. Young recorded back in 1966 under the name Napoleon XIV. And yet not one those hits appear here!

Although this is a nice collection of songs by CSNY's whiny singer, it's obvious that Young has never been able to write new songs as good as he could from 1970-1972. It makes you think he should have retired after his first few albums, doesn't it?

A word to the wise, if you're looking for "Horse With No Name," keep on looking, because it's not included in this set.

Excellent Restrospective of a Great Career.......2007-04-24

Actually, I'd give this CD four and a half stars. The only thing that prevents a five-star review is that any greatest hits of someone as important as Neil Young needs to have 2 CDs to cover all the material the man has produced over the years. Sound quality excellent, and the versions are full-length, as much as ten minutes in the case of 'Cowgirl in the Sand'. Neil Young was one of the seminal singer/songwriters of the sixties and early seventies, and his works capture the era of protest and baby-boomers coming of age. The song selection is good for a single CD. As someone who has most of Young's work on vinyl, I realize that this retrospective is only about half what deserves to be included, but it is a good start, and highly recommended.

Some hits and some album cuts.......2007-04-10

While this is an excellent collection of some of Young's best work, it is not really a greatest hits collection. While it includes his biggest hits(Heart of Gold, Old Man, and Only Love Can Break Your Heart), it omits some of his other hits and includes songs that were never even released as singles. I am a bit surprised that they included both "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Southern Man" on a single CD, since they are very similar musically. Of the two I always liked "Cowgirl" better, "Southern Man" is cliché ridden and perpetuates anti-southern stereotypes. All-in-all this is a solid collection for the casual Young fan.

Just my two cents on this. I grew up listening to Neil Sedaka and his other contemporaries. I have to clarify that I'm writing this mostly cause I hate re-recordings. They tend to hi-jack the true spirit of the music as we knew it.
Whenever any performer have endurance throughout the decades, you can't expect a definitive compilation may include all the original recordings, mostly due to label changes. Rhino are the only guys (and I don't own any financial association with them) that have been offering this, as they pay royalties for gathering original takes from different record labels. That makes it clear: you got to pay a little more for "real definitive compilations".

I bought this CD for my husband because he enjoyed playing old Sedaka record albums - but you can't take albums for a ride in the car. He loves the CD, all the oldies, and was surprised to find new recordings as well. He says he especially loves the song Sedaka sings with his daughter (Should Have Never Let You Go). I honestly like hearing him play the CD and am enjoying it along with him. As for any criticism that several of these songs are re-recordings...well, yes, but I knew that from reading the reviews. I bought it anyway, and my husband is happy I did. No disappointment here.

Great Memories with Neil!.......2007-06-27

Neil Sedaka has always been a favorite performer of mine and this latest CD just reaffirms it. The memories of such old standards as Oh Carol, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Calendar Girl and the dynamite duet with his daughter Dara just prove that this guy and his classics are timeless. Highly recommend for anyone who appreciates great music from a less-complicated time and less hectic world.

Fluffy, catchy pop songs often the target of harsh criticism, because, well, they're simple, easy to remember, and melodic through and through. Such is the perfect recipie for hits and recognition as one of Americas greatest writers. Neil Sedaka's inarguable talent is evident on this collection, and anyone with an ear for melody and top notch writing will be delighted with it, while completists and purists may feel ripped-off.


While far from "definitive", the disc effectively showcases Neil's consistency and gift of melody. It's a gift he uses to full effect on classics like Oh Carol, Breaking up is hard to do, and many others. The nice surprise on this disc was a song I had never heard before, anywhere. The track is called "You", a love song brimming with heartfelt lyrics and emotion. It actually sounds like a number from a broadway musical if you excise the cheesy synthesizer and replace it with a real string orchestra. It's drop-dead gorgeous writing from Mr. Sedaka!

Many buyers of this disc people are dissatisfied with the re-recordings of the early hits,and quite frankly, I expected the original versions since there is no disclaimer on the packaging. What I do appreciate about the new versions is the sound quality, and Neil's faithful interpretation of songs that fomented his carreer as a solo performer.

There are some 70's hits missing like "That's where the music takes me", but overall this collection is okay. I also appreciate the great digital remastering of the 70's recordings on this disc.

I can't give this cd a perfect score because of the deception regarding the early hits and the missing 70's hits. It's just okay. I give this collection 3 stars...but Neil always gets 5 stars!

Bring Old and New Together Next Time.......2007-06-15

As others have stated, "definitive" does not mean 1991 songs instead of those recorded in the early 60s. Listening to the new versions was almost like hearing Sedaka do karaoke of his own music. It's not that they were bad but I just really wanted the original songs in a package labeled as "definitive."

All that being said, I do enjoy the CD. I don't buy that many CDs nowadays as I either download (legally) the music or listen to the songs I already own. However, I watched him perform on The View and immediately purchased the CD. I don't think there were any reviews up at the time or I would have hesitated at the re-recording alerts posted. Yet the CD still holds up.

I loved hearing the old 70s classics "Laughter in the Rain," "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" and "Bad Blood" (which I didn't care much for in '75 but it sounds a lot better in '07).

The clunker? "Love Will Keep Us Together." The Captain and Tennille do it much better, although without Neil, the song wouldn't actually exist.

I also liked his version of "Where The Boys Are." That was a real treat.

Crowded House Reform - Official Statement from the Band


Crowded House founders Neil Finn and Nick Seymour have confirmed that they will be putting the band back together, with plans for a new studio album and world tour.

Talking about the decision Neil said "After spending most of last year making music and hanging out with my friend Nick Seymour we are now announcing our intention to reform Crowded House with a new record entitled Time On Earth. It feels right to us that the band should re-emerge at this time and together with Mark Hart we look forward to reconnecting with the audience that we established and for whom we still hold a deep respect. We aim to make the upcoming shows and the new music every bit as vital and spirited as what has come before. We are conscious that Paul Hester was above all a great drummer and we are currently auditioning to find someone special to take that role."

The band is currently putting the finishing touches on the new album for release later in the year. Tour plans are yet to be announced but the band have confirmed they will play the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in California USA along with Bjork, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Rage Against the Machine."

I really didn't know much about this band. I loved the song "Don't Dream It's Over"; so I bought this CD. The entire CD is great. It is filled with easy listening and mellow songs. The CD just leaves you feeling really good. I love it.

Essential compilation of severely underrated band.......2007-01-19

I agree with most of the other reviewers: Crowded House were massively underrated. The critics were fond of their albums at the time, and in the years since Neil Finn has been acknowledged of one of the master songwriters of his generation. Still, outside of their home turf of Australia and New Zealand, few people are familiar with the name Crowded House. Play them "Don't Dream It's Over," their brilliant 1987 chart-topper, and you'll probably get a vague, "Ohhh, they did *that* song." This is simply a shame.

Almost every band purported to be the Next Big Thing eventually gets compared to The Beatles, whether it's Duran Duran or The Strokes, and it's usually quite a stretch in any number of ways. Not so with Crowded House. In superficial aesthetics the two bands share a lot in common: the Rubber Soul-like harmonies that adorn their album Woodface; the driving, melodic basslines of Nick Seymour (much like Paul McCartney); Paul Hester's non-technical, but undeniably toe-tapping drumming; and Neil Finn's voice, which can break into Lennon-esque, hoarse rock shout, or have a soothing clarinet quality like McCartney.

But the songwriting is where the comparison is most apt. The Beatles' best songs seem almost inevitable and cosmic: *somebody* was bound to happen upon a melody this perfect eventually (as in "Yesterday"), and for some reason Lennon and McCartney were able to pluck such songs out of the air regularly. Neil Finn did the same, several times for each album, with Crowded House. Listen to "Four Seasons In One Day" just once, and you'll hear what I mean.

With this album, all these songs are collected in one place. I can't say how essential this disc is for anyone who appreciates outstanding pop songwriting that goes beyond catchy and crafted and into the realm of something deep and transcendent. The first 10 listens you'll be enjoying the melodies, energy and fantastic production; after that, you'll feel like you've found a new musical best friend. It's that good.

An entire CD that is very easy to listen to........2007-01-13

This CD plays like an easy listening extravaganza. Every song is mellow and classic. The band is apparently from New Zealand/Australia, which may explain the subtle brit pop undertones.. not to mention the McCartney-esque style of a few tracks. Overall this CD is a great buy, you won't be disappointed.

When I first listened to this disk, I could knew one Crowded House song (Don't Dream It's Over), which is a great song, but I didn't know the band. A friend recommended this disk, which I listened to the first time at work. I didn't get anything done for that hour, and if CD's could wear out, I'd long ago have needed to replace this one.

Crowded House may not be a major band - one MTV hit, a couple of radio hits, and they're real big in New Zealand (where they are from) - but they are one of greats. Reminiscent at times of (OK, I know, this gets thrown around too often, but it's true) the Beatles (in their mid-years - think Rubber Soul) and The Ocean Blue, they can mellow with the best (Not the Girl You Think You Are, Four Seasons in One Day). When they choose to rock (Locked Out), the maintain musical and lyrical integrity. Weather With You is an indescribable joy.

Perhaps not for metalheads, but anyone who likes sophisticated (but not overly complex) arrangements, thoughtful lyrics, and spotless, emotional performance will love this.

Folk-esque classic.......2007-07-15

Neil Young's unique folk-esque music with his own distinct voice, has been enjoyed by many.
This 1972 album is probabely his best.
Starting with the laidback Out On The Weekend and going on to the title track labum, and the melancholy wailing of A Man Needs A Maid.
Then possibly his best known song of loneliness and heartache- Heart of Gold.
Then there is the contemplative song of youth and age - Old Man.
Neil Diamond was another classic of the forever memorable 70's and anybody who loves folk will want this in their collection.

A "must have" for any respectable collection.......2007-04-12

This album was released when I was 10 years old. I remember listening to it when my older brother first purchased it. I almost forgot it even existed until I recalled it after listening to CSN&Y Deja VU. All 10 tracks are incredible. It's truly a great recording. My 14 year old daughter even recognized some of the tracks on this album which was released 35 years ago. It's nice to jam to music that has words you can understand and have meaning. When my brother learned that I had purchased the CD he imediately took credit for "teaching me well" on quality classic music.

NEIL YOUNG'S TIMELESS AUTUMN CLASSIC !.......2007-04-11

Originally released in 1972, Neil Young's Harvest includes his only number one hit single, Heart of Gold, together with nine other songs, including some that are the best of his forty year career. This is the album that Neil himself said was his best. It is a varied album, that explores many levels of the human experience, including loneliness, isolation, grief, madness, love, and acceptance. Contradictions are everywhere in these songs, including the first, Out on the Weekend. Young sings of the lonely boy who can't relate to joy, but also about the "woman so fine" who loves him. This song, like most on this album, includes acoustic guitar, harmonica, and pedal steel guitar. In the next song, Harvest, Young sings, "Will I see you give more than I can take?, Will I only harvest some?", as if he will not allow himself to completely let go and fall in love. Continuing this theme of isolation, A Man Needs A Maid starts with "My life is changing in so many ways, I don't know who to trust anymore". With it's haunting melody, the London Symphony Orchestra accompaniment, and Young's fragile voice, the song allows you to empathize with it's character's uncertainty. Next is Heart of Gold, where the loner sings of looking for true love, but feels he is running out of time. With James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt providing the backing vocals, Ben Keith playing beautiful pedal steel guitar phrases, and Young on acoustic guitar and harmonica, singing of traveling and being a miner for a heart of gold, the song works perfectly to conjure up the image of a decent man searching the world over for a decent woman to love. Old Man is a song Neil wrote about the 70-year-old cattleman ranch hand who lived at his ranch. It is another song in which Young portrays a loner, and is probably Neil's most popular song ever. There's A World is a symphony (with the LSO) where hope and acceptance are the prevalent themes. With lyrics like "All God's children", "Never worry", and "Could be good things in the air for you", it's an uplifting song. In Alabama, Young calls the state out on Jim Crow laws and racist attitudes. Recorded in a barn at his ranch with electric guitars, a pedal steel guitar, piano, and drums, Young brought in Stephen Stills and David Crosby to sing the backing vocals. The rock song sounds great and also makes it's point clear. Needle and the Damage Done was recorded live at a California University with just Neil and an acoustic guitar. Written about band member Danny Whitten (who later died from a drug overdose), the song is both poignant and haunting. Words (Between the Lines of Age) closes the album (and also gets points for the great title). This was also recorded in Young's barn with electric guitars, a pedal steel guitar, piano, and drums. It features Dylan influenced lyrics, and a long guitar solo (Neil plays great guitar solos). Harvest is an album that's best listened to in the Fall of the year. With it's folk-country sounds, reflective themes, and even it's autumnal album cover and title, it blends well with the mood of the season. Harvest is a timeless autumn classic that you will enjoy year after year.

Neil Young-After The Gold Rush *****

Neil Young released his seceond classic solo album in 1970. This time he elected to go it without the help of the grea Crazy Horse. Though he did use every member of the band at one point or another during the recording of After The Goldrush this was largley a solo album. A much softer and lighter album then it's predicesor Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and actually accesable compared to the debut selftitled album. After The Goldrush is a much more personal album with more hearfelt lyrics and a far less dry recording then that of his previous albums.

By this time Neil Young had already made a large name for himself working with the legendary Buffalow Springfield, the success of Everbody Knows This Is Nowhere, and he was beginning to work with Crosby, Stills, and Nash, so it was only logical that this album be a massive success.

Songs like 'Tell Me Why' and the hit 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' and 'I Believe In You' are very personal songs that have to be heard to appreciate and when heard one can since and feel the longing in Youngs voice for love. The cover of the country classic 'Oh, Lonesome Me' really sums up the entire feel of this album and Neil mood at the time, he was in a very low place and was longing for companionship of some kind. While tracks like the short 'Till The Morning Comes' and the equally as short 'Cripple Creek Ferry' seem up beat and peppy they are the shortest moments on the album and by the far the only half way forgetable ones on this classic. 'Southern Man' is a classic and it was destend to become so the moment it was recorded. Establishing Neil Young as a certified first rate guitar slinger, and the Godfather of grunge all at the same time. 'Southern Man' is one of if not the single most contraversial songs Young ever recorded causing a rivalry between him and the southern rock band from Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd. The title track on the album 'After The Gold Rush' is another Young classic and one of his all time best songs. It is a song about the renissance, the 1970's, and the future and how the world is changing and not changing and what we could be doing to fix things but are not doing. It is a calssic song that is for sure. 'When You Dance You Can Really Love' is one song that has always be given a bad rap and for what I do not understand the song is wonderful and one that I personally get lost in everytime I hear it. 'Birds' is without a doubt one of the most beautiful songs Neil Young or anyone has ever written and it is heart wrenching to listen to. You relaly must hear to understand what I mean. 'Dont Let It Bring You Down' is possibly the best song Young ever recorded. The melody line and the vocal layering is wonderful. The lyrics are spectacular, quite simply amazing. Do sit and write in a little review how amazing 'Dont Let It Bring You Down' is, is just frankly impossible. Just listen is all that can be said.

After The Gold Rush has gone down in history and one of the all time greatest rock n' roll albums ever. Many best of, critics, and music fans alike. After The Gold Rush is an album all Neil Young fans and all rock n' roll fans around the world should own. It's an album of songwriting, and much more tendor then most of the other albums in Youngs cannon, Highly recomended.

A solid effort.......2007-04-10

While this is not one of my favorite Neil Young albums, it is a solid effort. It was a top ten hit on the US album charts and produced his first solo top 40 hit "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and the minor follow-up hit "When You Dance You Can Really Love". It includes probably his most overrated song, the cliché ridden "Southern Man", which is really just a remake of his excellent "Cowgirl in the Sand". It was popular primarily because it helped perpetuate anti-southern and anti-Christian stereotypes (the only two groups that it is still politically correct to stereotype). "Tell Me Why" is a very good song as is "After The Gold Rush", though Young's vocal limitations are very apparent on this song as he struggles to hit the notes. "Till The Morning Comes" is good but sounds like a song that he started but could never finish. All-in-all, a good album but not a great one.

If You Could Forget The Politics And Relax For Awhile Listen Up............2007-03-13

The icon Neil Young solidified himself in the early to mid 70's and the funny thing is that he remains true to this album to this day despite all the semi forays into synthesized madness,noise,albums cut with Pearl Jam, and the styles of the day.
The simplicity of this album as well as his prior 2, the few that followed are all 5 stars,it's laid back intimate sparse texture that fuses bittersweet tinged country ruminations with the great garage rock of Crazy horse was his formula and Neil's ongoing trademark of endurance.
Nobody does it better, none of his musical children.
I happily was front row in New York on his "Greendale" tour, saw that great"Rust Never Sleeps" tour,and followed and listen to him from the "Deja Vu" days onward and all you youngsters are best to start with these and should listen to Buffalo Springfield with his old buddy Steve Stills to see the development of this musician and the status he achieved with CSN&Y and beyond.

This is a good transitional album by Neil. He smartly used some of Crazy Horse and CSN to complete it before going on tour with CSNY.

For years, fans of Neil Young and Crazy Horse have been waiting for an official chance to hear Crazy Horse live with original leader Danny Whitten, the insanely talented guitarist who died of a heroin overdose in late 1972, inspiring Tonight's the Night. Tuned-in fans have been awaiting this very set for at least a dozen years, as it was originally to be tacked onto the end of a Decade-style triple CD of outtakes. Thankfully, this well-recorded live set from the infamous Fillmore East was well worth the wait. Here are scorching, extended takes of "Down by the River," "Winterlong," and "Cowgirl in the Sand," each propelled by guitar interplay so delightful you have to keep rewinding to hear it again. In fact, bits of it seem to prefigure the ways that Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine would feed off each other in the band Television, only with less of a sweet edge. But the world doesn't need any more arguments that Young was a proto-punk; what the world does need is at least a dozen more releases from Neil's archives! And hopefully, with this awesome live album, the floodgates have truly been opened and there are many more to come, in the vein of Dylan's Bootleg series. This disc is worth it alone for the version of "Wondering," a tune not officially recorded until many years later in Neil's weird '80s rockabilly phase. --Mike McGonigal

I don't care how many times I've blasted "Everyone Knows This is Nowhere" and "Down By The River" from this CD and thoroughly enjoyed them or how it's such a great look into a critical period of so many critical periods of such an amazing aritist...it's either over priced or more profoundly too lacking in sheer length. As a Neil fan I had to get it but it's hard not to feel slightly ripped off. Makes me skeptical about buying further such releases.

I also have the 2-10-70 bootleg and feel that a comparison is in order to appreciate this Fillmore show. Neil's very intimate with the crowd at the Cincinatti show, but frustrated at times, even asking two people to be quiet so he can "get into it" for the rest of the audience. Then, at the beginning of the electric set Neil complains about a shock that he's getting from the equipment, and in the middle of "Down by the River" (18 minutes long!) he clearly says "I quit" during the chorus. So, that show is not going to be one of his favorites even if the music is amazing. It is a shame that this Fillmore release is missing the acoustic set and the ubiquitous "Cinnamon Girl" closer, which I heard was not as well preserved. However, what is here is the best sounding live Neil you have ever heard! It's not just the quality of the recording, either, which is rich, but the band itself. Let's take the "River" as our vehicle of comparison. Neil's voice has more inflection, his solos are more varied and aggressive, and despite being 12 minutes long it is a superior version. Also, instead of "It Might Have Been" from Cincinatti we get "Cowgirl" which blows the studio version away. Obviously, Neil felt better at the Fillmore show, so don't question the Master and treat yourself.

If you want a piece of Neil Young and Crazy Horse History, this is the ticket. Sure it might not be the whole concert and it is short compared to most CDs today, but I'll take quality over quanity anyday! The sound quality is fantastic!

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are brilliant. It is a live version of " Everybody Knows this is Knowhere" The version of "Winterlong" is superb" There is little crowd noise. I would have enjoyed more tracks on the CD. All in all well worth the purchase price

Long Lost Neil Young Live Returns and SHINES!.......2007-04-12

Amzing this collection is. A must have along with Live at Massey Hall. Neil sounds like you remember especially if you saw him with Crazy Horse at the late Bill Graham's Fillmore East a favorite with the hippies in New Yorks Greenwich Village in the late sixties time of flower and beads! . A young Neil Young voice, rather than the mature version that comes with age and mileage. An incredible collection of well produced and well performed live tracks that can only bring you back to thw Woodstock era. Well worth the listen!
