Long known as the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, this venerable gospel institution has seen its ranks fluctuate in recent years. Rarely, however, have the soul-stirring harmonies of the group, recording here as a quartet, benefited from such stellar support. Producer John Chelew (best known for John Hiatt's breakthrough Bring the Family) has enlisted guitarists David Lindley and John Hammond, bassist Danny Thompson, drummer Michael Jerome, and harmonica ace Charlie Musselwhite for a set that celebrates the bluesy underpinnings of gospel.

The selection of material mixes the traditional spirituals the group has been performing for more than a half century ("Nobody's Fault but Mine," "Motherless Child") with soulful readings from the more contemporary songbooks of Tom Waits, the Rolling Stones, and Ben Harper. Fantastic album.......2007-06-13

They just have amazing voices. There are two Tom Waits songs on the album; and while i'm a big fan of Tom Waits, sometimes it's hard to hear how to sing his songs yourself. The Boys bring out their musicality in a way that's accessible for everyone - i can sing those songs in the shower now! ;) Great album!

I was not really familiar with the Blind Boys until I purchased this CD. I love their old-time blue-zy style and plan to purchase more of their music.

The Blind Boys reach out here to broaden their base beyond the traditional gospel fan. They start out by covering material by the Rolling Stones (I just wanna see his face from Exile On Main Street), Tom Waits, and others. They add some mainstraem guest stars to further broaden the appeal. There's blues, rock, soul here all blended together expertly.
This won a number of awards and deservedly so. I'm sure there's many people who didn't realize that they can enjoy gospel music until they listened to this.

If you weren't already in love with the Blind Boys, you will fall in love with them and their music after listening to this CD.

Prior to hearing this, I wasn't a gospel fan, and wasn't really sure what my reaction would be. Since I bought this CD I have purchased about five others by the Blind Boys - and while they're all superb, this one is my favorite.

It's hard to pick favorite songs on this CD, although, "Run on for a Long Time," "Soldier," and "The Last Time" are a few. You'll find a lot of variety here, from uptempo tracks to more solemn and slow songs.

You might also recognize "Way Down in the Hole" as the opening track from HBO's series "The Wire."

Having toured with Elvis Costello, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Peter Gabriel, the Blind Boys have earned their place in mainstream music culture, but maintain the traditional sounds that appeal to audiences around the world.

I saw the Blind Boys of Alabama for the first time on Austin City Limits, singing "Amazing Grace." I remember being completely drawn in at the harmony and the rendition, as it sounded almost like a chain gang. The beginning cadence sounds a bit like "The House of the Rising Sun," but you forget about that once the vocals start in. The rest of the CD is equally moving. I've read other reviews claiming goosebumbs, tears, etc. -- my sentiments exactly. Bravo.

I heard a new song of their's (equally fabulous) on the radio a few days ago but suppose the CD has not yet been released -- I'm waiting!

I've been more a blues and rock fan, but after hearing the Blind Boys of Alabama on their "There Will Be a Light" CD with Ben Harper I decided to buy "Higher Ground". What a great CD and what moving music. Every cut is superb. I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes great music.

Glad they weren't the Deaf Boys of Alabama. My first listen was off Peter Gabriel's latest album which features the Blind Boys in a couple tracks. Great harmonies brought me to this album, and after accidentally running into a concert of theirs during the Montreal Jazz Festival a night before I was to see Peter Gabriel in concert, I was only disappointed that they didn't show up to perform at the last concert of Gabriel's tour the next night. However, I was in awe! The presence, the power and they rocked the house. I wished I was able to find a rockin baptist church so I could hear this kind of live musical power on a weekly basis. You won't be disappointed in this CD.

THIS ALBUM IS BETTER THAN ANYTHING........2007-06-15

this is the first great Blind Guardian album, and despite its differences to their latest, _Twist in the Myth_, there is a "unity in differences" that has set the rails upon which this band has ridden. Here, where the band at first sounds immature, within a deflated creative dimension of its musical ideas. Yet there is a sublime craftsmanship beneath the surface that distinguishes them from the rabble of power metal. Below its ostensibly unpolished exterior, _Tales from the Twilight World_ exhudes not only intelligence, style, and proficiency, but the higher artistic virtues of character, and the happy rashness of imagination. They have everything going for them. Not to mention that Hansi's voice is still the awesome presence it always is. Hansi's screaming power metal voice is better than anything. The songs are brilliant. "Traveller in Time" and "Welcome to Dying" make two killer opening cuts. "Lord of the Rings", while elevated to sheer magic on the later acoustic/orchestral version (see _Forgotten Tales_), is a charming ballad with the embryo of their future medieval-esque, textural constructions. "Goodbye My Friend" is among their very best, with super-heavy, blazing and grinding guitars and one of hansi's most unforgettable vocal performances. "Lost in the Twilight Hall" is killer and Kai Hansen's guest vocals are hilarious. "Tommyknockers" is actually pretty sweet also but you can't help but chuckle at the chorus. Then best of all is "The Last Candle" -- incredible intro, incredible guitars and vocals, and one of the most perfect demonstrations of Blind Guardian's mastery of songcraft, emotional inflection, and sheer kcikazzery. as always (except on NIME), their closing songs top everything. Those "weird dreams" you've been having are telling you to buy this classic.......2007-06-07

If you've never really heard much from Blind Guardian (like me before I bought "Tales from the Twilight World"), but you think you know exactly what kind of music that they make just by your research and related bands' music, then your thinking is most likely completely wrong. Blind Guardian is a band that you really have to hear firsthand to grasp what they're all about. If you think that all they compose is power metal (BG's most connected genre), then you're only partially correct. And if you think that they are all speed metal or thrash, then again, only part of that reasoning is true. The band, in fact, combines elements of thrash, lightning FAST thrash... you know, the kind with scorching solos, double-bass drumming, and the like, power metal (mystical lyrics, anthem chorus, soaring vocals), epic metal, and everything in between. Their distinctiveness, their uniqueness lies not in what type of music they play, but the way that they combine different varieties of metal to merge as one.

Their singer, Hansi Kursch, is a big part of that diversity. He's got that thrash vocal presence (menacing & ominous verbal presentation, high-pitched screams, etc.), but can also share his lyrics in a sometimes tranquil or soothing manner. However, while his forte might be that thrash or a "power metal" type voice, his talent can easily spread to several different genres. What I'm trying to say is that he's completely unique, varied, and has loads of genuine personality (which means he doesn't rip-off any other singer); the man is truly a remarkable singer. The guitarists also have tons of variety. They can distribute thrash-like riffs and blazing solos (such as on "Welcome to Dying"), but they have melodic tendencies too, which can be seen on "Lord Of The Rings". The drummer has to be insane or have A.D.D or something, because his job is to keep up with those blistering guitar pieces, doing blast beats, double-bass techniques, plenty of tom-rolls, and he never skips a beat. In short, the musicianship is phenomenal, very diverse and unique, that WILL amaze you and leave you awestruck.

The songs on "Tales" are well-ranged and diverse as well. The album was very well-produced (or very well-remastered), but it still retains that raw feel (evocative of mid-eighties thrash). "Weird Dreams", for example, is a short instrumental full of sweet riffs, various time-changes, and classic solos. "Traveler in Time", "Welcome to Dying", "Lost in the Twilight Hall", and "Goodbye My Friend" are certified rockers that have no short supply of bittersweet metal. All four contain anthem-like chorus', insane guitar work, and incredible drumming. One of my personal favorites, "Lord of the Rings", is a shorter, three-minute piece that is very emotional and powerful. The vocals are so heartfelt and very talented, and the acoustic guitars weave among themselves ever so intricately. The lyrics are also special, and if you're a LOTR fan, you should be able to relate. "Altair 4" and "Tommyknockers" are the weakest off the album, but still add a lot to the C.D. "Altair 4" is short, but it's pretty diverse. The intro is unusual, but when it gets going, there's some well-done vocals and great guitar slices. "Tommyknockers" is another rocker that isn't bad at all, but it's not the best. While the lyrics may seem over-done, the song's actually about a Stephen King book, which is sweet. The closing song "The Last Candle" is thrash metal personified, complete with double-bass setting the tempo and crunchy riffage. That chorus is just so catchy and Hansi really hits those high notes perfectly. Quite an amazing closure to this '90's classic!

I strongly urge all of you to get into this band. I've heard that Hansi's voice is an acquired taste, but I can't picture any fan of fast-paced metal tunes, that contain soaring vocals full of passion and power, hating this band. If you like 80's thrash, epic power metal, or all-around medieval-esque themes, then you'll be in heaven with these guys, believe me. Also, I haven't heard much of BG's other stuff, but to my knowledge "Tales from the Twilight World" seems like a great starting point, because it's their third studio album, therefore they've "been around the block" so to speak, but it's also classic enough to be enjoyed by purists. Just think of Metallica's "Master of Puppets" or Slayer's "Reign in Blood", (no it's not as good, but like those two, it's BG's 3rd studio album). In conclusion, "Tales from the Twilight World" flat-out rules, and if you like power metal, thrash, and innovative metal genius', then really you must buy this album!

Blind Guardian embraces the power metal sound.......2006-07-26

While 1990's Tales from the Twilight World is perhaps not as impressive as later Blind Guardian releases, it is noteworthy in that it is the first album where the band totally embraces a power metal sound. Blind Guardians previous albums (Battalions of Fear and Follow the Blind) may have embraced the fantasy themes that are power metal standards, but the music itself was firmly in the thrash/speed metal style.

Tales from the Twilight World is still undeniably fast, but it is a power metal album from start to finish. The lyrical content is still very much in the sci-fi/fantasy realm. The overall songwriting has improved to become more melodic and incorporate more intricate song structures (and some amazing guitar solos). Basically, the Blind Guardian sound we're all familiar with was born here. Songs like Welcome to Dying and Lord of the Rings are fantastic power metal tracks, and are still considered among the band's best material.

Gamma Ray's Kai Hansen makes another guest appearance on this album, further establishing Blind Guardian's credentials as a major German power metal band.

Overall, the album is not as memorable as Imaginations from the Other Side or Nightfall in Middle Earth (then again, what is?), but it is an important milestone in Blind Guardian's career, and is worth checking out if you're a Blind Guardian fan.

Along with Kreator, Blind Guardian are my favorite German band ever! They're one of the most underrated metal bands of all time and they should get more attention. Vocalist/bassist Hansi Kursh is an amazing singer and sounds a lot like the great Bruce Dickinson! The guitars are the real strong point of this band with epic solos and great duel play with Marcus Siepen and Andre Olbrich. The production quality isn't great but is quickly overlooked by the amount of talent this German group has! If you want an awesome album that isn't played like hell on MTV, then take a look at this one!

An outstanding Celtic folk album.......2004-08-27

Innovative, yet solid, modern Scottish trad that branches out into several directions and musical modes. The band's a bit showy, actually, if truth be told, wearing their virtuousity on their sleeve, while flitting gleefully about through a variety of styles. Fortunately, they're also really, really good, and capable of playing soulfully as well as energetically. Lead singer Ian F. Benzie has a bit of a Nic Jones about him (which is a very high compliment in my book), and fiddler Jonny Hardy adds a mournful, magic touch to several tunes. This is particularly rich and rewarding album, well worth checking out!

Not blind, not dogs and not old but good music nevertheless!.......2004-07-16

When I first discovered Scotland's "Old Blind Dogs" I thought of images of dogs trying to jump through hoops for their trainer and missing, or making it only half through the hoop of fire and just laying their smoldering with a man's best friend type of smile. Well, the secret is out. They are not blind, they are not dogs and..... I believe the lead singer is about my age, so I don't think of him as old. For decades, they have had a unique sound of lead singing with a heavy Scottish accent and wild percussion, including djembe and conga drums. Ian Benzy has been the lead vocal through that period of time, with Dave Cattanach simply listed as percussion ( they must we weary listing all of the exotic instruments than having to spell them correctly). They start with a strong synchopated rhythm in track one "Kilbogie." I usually play along and lose sense of time and tracks until track 8. That is why I am giving this CD 5 stars. MacPherson's Rant is a poignant little dittie sung in the first person of someone about to be hung by the British. My background is Irish, and this usually gets me to standing and ranting along. Excellent Cittern and Low "D" Whistle are contributed by Buzzyby McMillan. Jonny Hardie looks too young for a veteran group but contributes absolutely excellent fiddle. I do have to mention missing the piper. The dogs are easy to lose track of for Irish and Irish American Celtic Music basketcases like myself. They are well worth the investment to put a few of their CD's in a Celtic collection. My only complaint is that the lyrics didn't come with the CD. "A Beggin'I Wool Go" was, my introduction to English sung in a Scottishy way. The usual question was "Whut is greazy braed laddie? My friends and I loved to sing along to this song accompanied by good Scottish Whiskey. Toward the end of the evening I will have to admit to humming through parts of songs. Then we would get teary eyed listening to their voices only harmony in "Tatties are in 'Oven." We thought this was a religious song about something being in heaven, and we cried into our whisky. Then a Scottish friend enlightened us as to why he was laughing so hard. Tatties are a pastry and they were refering to the oven. The harmony is still there and each CD has at least one voices only track. My hope is the dogs stay together and keep making these fine Celtic Music CDs.

Seriously. They say that CDs are supposed to be indestructable (under normal conditions, of course) but we really did wear this one out, we listened to it so much. There is simply no better band at combining the traditional with the modern and giving everything they do a punch. Buy it and you won't regret it... until you wear it out and have to buy another one!

All the Old Blind Dogs' albums are worth listening to--and having for your own. Not one has failed me yet. They have just the right combination of tradition and innovation, otherworldliness and jauntiness... I could go on, but if you know them you'll know what I mean. Sadly the lead vocalist Ian will be retiring soon, but we hope for a new voice just as engaging. I don't get too excited about bands, but this one I heartily reccomend.

This is the CD that got me interested in Celtic music.......1998-11-26

I bought this CD years ago at the suggestion of a friend who knows Celtic music, and it remains my favorite. The more I listen to it, the more I love every tune. The songs, sung by Ian Benzie, caught my attention first, but I soon became just as captivated by the other tunes. I can't recommend this CD highly enough.

One of the best Xmas CDs out there - unless you don't like good music.......2006-12-12

This CD is heartfelt and unique, with great instrumentation and good production and has a nice sampling of guest artists. But overall the Blind Boys voices are what makes it shine. They really make the songs thier own - even the ones you've heard a thousand times before - and THIER versions will stick in your head all season long.
The GREAT majority of reviewers give this CD 5 stars and many others give it 4 stars. But there are 3 or 4 people bringing the overall rating down by giving the CD 1 or 2 stars. Please ignore those reviews. One of those reviewers said the CD was overproduced and too polished, yet another reviewer said they must have used the first take on every track implying the recordings are sloppy? Contradictory and unfounded. Just click on the track samples right here on Amazon and listen - is it what you expected?
Folks, if you love the Blind Boys and/or love Christmas music with an original R&B twist (R&B in the true old-school sense of the word, not the way the phrase "R&B" is used today), then this CD is for you. If you have any idea what you're buying before you purchase (and these days it's hard not to), then buy it and enjoy.

Let me add my voice to the praise for this album. I've heard numerous versions of most of these songs and "Blind Boys" have just reset my ultimate covers for both "Go Tell it on the Mountain" and "In the Bleak Midwinter" just to name a few. Admittedly, this review is posted too late for you to get this CD for this Christmas, but trust me you will very much be enjoying the songs on this album throughout the year.

A bluesy gospel Christmas album with special guests.......2005-11-14

I had not heard any music by this group prior to borrowing a copy of this album - however, this is an excellent Christmas album. As you would expect from a gospel group, they focus almost exclusively on the religious aspect of the festival, the sole exception being White Christmas. There is a different guest singer on each track except the opening and closing tracks, which are without guests.

With any album featuring a variety of guests, one's favorites depend to some extent on one's opion of the various guests. For example, my favorite guest is Shelby Lynne, who does a fine duet of The Christmas song - however, it's not quite my absolute favorite track. That distinction goes to Chrissie Hynde singing In the bleak midwinter, almost as a solo track with the group providing backup harmony. It is one of my favorite carols and I get the impression that it is more popular in Britain than in America, where it turns up occasionally on Christmas albums (this one included) but is by no means common. Other favorites include I pray on Christmas (a cover of a Harry Connick Jr song featuring Solomon Burke), Born in Bethlehem (with Mavis Staples), Little drummer boy (with Michael Franti) and Joy to the world (with Aaron Neville).

This is an album with plenty of variety - they put plenty of energy into Last month of the year (no guests) and Go tell it on the mountain (with Tom Waits), which provide plenty of contrast with the slower songs.

If you are looking for a bluesy gospel Christmas album, this is certainly a good one to choose.

"Go Tell It On The Mountain"! . . . The Blind Boys Of Alabama present us all with their gifts of "Gold Frankinsence, and Myrrh" in spirit and sound. Every track on this cd is a true "gem" and will stand the test of time to last for generation after generation of listeners . . . it is 'classic" in that it defies the fads of time . . . no matter your age or musical taste preferences, these true musical artists will touch a chord in your soul that only "spiritual gospel" can stricke and resound . . .these singers create spiritual harmonics is your soul and heart.

The Christmas season is special . .and in truth it is all too short . . . but there ARE several "christmas albums" which i listen to and enjoy throughout the year, regardless of the month or season or "temperature on the thermometer": the one is The New Christie Minstrels' "Merry Christmas" . . . another John prine's Christmas album . . . and now, "Go Tell It On The Mountain" by The Blind Boys Of Alabama! :)

Don't wait for the holiday season to near to get a copy of this album . . . and don't delay until the department stores begin decorating with reindeers and snowflakes . . . get it now . . get it anytime of the year . . and put it on your cd player and just let their soulful harmonies engulph you in wave after wave until you find yourself a part of the flow . . . you will find it's Christmas all year long . . every day . . . and if you're like me, you'll go out and get yourself more and more albums by these men who have "real talent" . . "real abilities" . . and "real gifts" . . .

I give my thanks to The Blind Boys of Alabama for this album and for all of their recordings . . . American . . and "world" music . . . owes them a debt of gratitude for the treasures they have created and made permanent on recording after recording . . . long after these men have departed . . and long after all of us have vacated this world, these tracks will be listened to and appreciated and enjoyed by countless not yet born . . .and THEY TOO will be grateful to The Blind Boys Of Alabama for leaving these tracks behind . . .

I hope that they record many many more albums yet to come . . . but for now, i am happy to have this "Christmas All Year" album from them, "Go Tell It On The Mountain"! :)

Overproduced by WAY too many not so special guests..........2004-12-19

The Blind Boys of Alabama sound spectacular on this cd, and the gospel combo backing them up is exellent, the songs are also great, and the Boys' harmonies are swinging, however the special guests(who are mostly not so special) wiegh this projest down. There is a great version of 12th Month of The Year, Go Tell it on the Mountian and The Christmas Song with jazz piano great Les McCann. Otherwise there are too many soul r&b type artists who don'tconform well to the Boys' ad thier gospel, blues jazz style. Aaron Nevelle completely ruins several songs, with his feminine wimpy whining, and many singers rap thier way thru songs. Too many doo wop-ish guest stars water this down. Too bad the producers here went so commercial.

Derek Bell recorded Carolan's Receipt in 1975, the same year he joined the Chieftains. This was one of the first LPs devoted to the music of the blind harper Turlough O'Carolan, and it helped to introduce his music to the world. The selections include "Sídh Beag agus Sídh Mór," the first melody O'Carolan composed, as well "Carolan's Farewell to Music," which was his last. Bell plays most of the pieces on the solo harp, although his new bandmates accompany him on a few tunes. There have been dozens of settings of O'Carolan's compositions released since these versions were recorded, but none have surpassed the beauty of Bell's. --Michael Simmons

A Treasure.......2002-04-10

Derek Bell recreates the authentic sound of Carolan, the blind 17th century Irish harper who transformed this traditional musical genre. (Actually Bell is almost certainly a far better harp player than Carolan, whose genius was composition, not performance.) Bell mainly uses a wire-strung harp, which gives his arrangements the haunting air of a music box. Listen closely for Bell's magical musical embellishments. Bell includes some of Carolan's best-known pieces (Blind Mary, George Barabazon, and Carolan's Farewell to Music) but also treats us to some lesser-known masterpieces, including Lady Athenry, Caralon's Nightcap, and Lady Gethin. Supernatural Music.......2000-08-07

I can't believe no one has reviewed this. I can still remember moments, whole days, almost twenty years on now only because this fine, fine music was playing at the time. This is a glorious album of tunes by a lost and forgotten genius. Carolan was a (fairly famous in his day) composer of the 17th century who was like no other. No other at all. I tried to explain it to a friend of mine recently by saying that he is the only human I can even imagine having written the Londonderry Air. This is beautiful, spectral, awesome music. Listen to the tragically short excerpt from Maire Dhall above... the piece entire is magic, pure and good.

I search/browsed my way to this page because something (unspecific, I don't know) about John Fahey's America reminded me of this album. I'm so glad it's been released on CD. Check it out.

Errol Morris' adroitly assembled documentary film "The Fog of War" examines the career of Robert S. McNamara-- United States Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations and whose tenure includes the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crises. Combining excerpts from 26 hours of interviews with McNamara, archival footage, filmed recreations, as well as newly declassified White House recordings Morris' filmmaking illuminates a national past that ominously parallels the contemporary political present. Morris reveals what previous biographies failed to investigate—the relationship between McNamara and the infamous United States General Curtis LeMay and their involvement in the firebombing of Tokyo—along with 67 other Japanese cities—in 1945. Errol Morris states "The easy thing to say would be McNamara is a bad guy, he did all these bad things...the story is more complex and far more interesting than I imagined. The disturbing thing is that this was a man with real ethical dimension who did something terrible."

As with music previously contributed to Morris' films, Philip Glass' score to "The Fog of War" effortlessly supports and enhances the film. The music, at times lyrical and at other times intense, deepens the horrifying images of war, highlighting the ambiguities of McNamara's character—and the consequences of his actions. Glass' music reinforces Morris' effort to understand the difficult ethical questions about governing and power raised by "The Fog of War".

Intriguing historical account of MacNamara- what he was thinking, what he did not say during two administrations involved in the Viet Name war. Use of film footage and Philip Glass' eerie and ominous soundtrack further developed the power of this film.

Ever thought about what it would be like to watch a film with no muscial score? I have and I did for this documentary. Believe me when I write this, there's no way this film would have been as good without Glass' melodic brutality looming in the background.

Glass does something wonderful with this score; he gives war, uncertainty, doubt and fear a musical element, an audible personality that captures each bomb, burnt building and ominous threat in complete perfection, leaving your ears and your mind in a state of disbelief and amazement, thinking to yourself, "Wow, that music fits this segment like a glove."

The Thin Blue Line score made me an instant Glass fan but this score made me borderline Glass fanatic.

In my opinion, he surpasses Carter Burwell in the category of most unflinching film composer.......by a long shot.

A Great Soundtrack for a Great Film.......2004-05-24

Errol Morris is the best documentary film maker ever and The Fog of War is his crowning achievement. The film explores the complexity of war and how it evolves. There is no political bias or agenda here...just plain truth and facts. Great work. Equal to the task is Phillip Glass's soundtrack. The music is haunting and eerie.

ANOTHER GREAT GLASS SCORE!.......2004-03-31

I'll keep this review short, just like the length of the pieces on the CD. This is yet another great score by Glass, and superbly recorded as well. Glass uses his classic strings and percussion to great effect and oftentimes great surprise as well.

This score has more variety than Glass's score for another Morris film, "The Thin Blue Line". By the way, will "The Thin Blue Line" ever get released on DVD?

The pieces are all short ones, which makes it an easier listen for Glass newbies I would imagine, but I would have preferred a few longer pieces- all the short pieces make it sound like "Glass fragments"- on some pieces once Glass gets going he has to come to a stop.

Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful CD!

Glass' dramatic score is Fog's 'secret sauce'.......2004-03-22

If you've seen Errol Morris' "The Fog of War," you know that a big part of what makes the movie click is Phillip Glass' outstanding soundtrack. Morris and Glass have worked together before and it shows. Morris' imagery (the falling dominos, the accelerating list of Japanese cities, JFK's slow-blinking visage before TV cameras) appears to be literally lifted off the screen into 3-D by the strength of Glass' score. I don't think you'll find another movie (certainly no other documentary) where the words, images and music mesh with such dramatic effect.

Generally excellent........2007-01-21

The Blind Boys get help from David Hidalgo (Los Lobos), Billy Preston, and Charlie Musselwhite on this release - not that they need it, but wow, what players. There is great, authentic stuff here. A particular standout is the atmospheric "Demons", a memorable production. (Yes, it includes guest rappers The Gift of Gab, but I'm 53 and I STILL like it, so......)

In a way, I wish I could give it 4.5 stars, because two cuts feel like filler. Still, it's easy to recommend.

cool gospel blues retro supersized wonder.......2006-06-05

If you like Gospel music and I mean real Gospel music you know what I mean, that Southern Black deep in the roots and heart of christianity seated in that deepest area of faith coming from the soul kind of Gospel music, then you really need to listen to this album, of course if you are into that kind of Gospel then you already know who The Blind Boys of Alabama are. the title track is wonderful in how it takes a fear of the Atom Bomb the way it was to the people in the late 40's and the 50's when people were building fallout shelters in their yards and schools started having drills for nuclear blasts and turns it into a worship of god. They also do a cover version of Eric Clapton's "Presence of the lord" that is way cool.

Not my taste, but not saying others wouldn't like it. To me, the singing sounds like a group of drunken hobos singing around a trashfire.

Gospel+Blues+Soul+Funk+Rap+Rock = SPECTACULAR!!!.......2005-05-07

I listened to this CD at one of those "listening stations" in a record store-- and bought it 15 minutes later! (...even though I had to scrounge in my pockets for my last 13 bucks.) It hasn't been off my rotation since. I'd never heard of these guys before, never really listened to so-called Gospel music before-- honestly, virgin ears. But.... wow! Spectacular.

For those coming from other musical regions (I myself am partial to blues,) or for those who never considered "Gospel" before, I beg you, give this album a try. While this album is broadly defined as "Gospel" there is so much more musically here. There is Gospel, of course, but also a healthy dose of blues (Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica), a hint of funk, a sprinkling of soul, a new interpretation of rock (Clapton, Norman Greenbaum), and one (surprisingly effective) nugget of rap--- all stirred with a soul-nourishing positive vibe, and filtered through the Blind Boys' unique musicality.

This is a very special and magical brew that will bring you up and leave you there, even after the music stops.
