5 out of 5 stars Correction to "Just A Correction".......2006-03-11

(which is painfully obvious to any REAL Dan Fan), March 7, 2006
Reviewer: B. Essex "Sings2Teddy"
FM is not a Steely Dan song - it is a Walter Fagen song.

You are joking right?! REAL Dan fan?? First of all it's Donald Fagen & Walter Becker. FM is a Steely Dan song - see below

FM
Drums and Percussion: Jeff Porcaro
Bass: Walter Becker
Guitar: Walter Becker
Steel Guitar: Cosmo Creek
Piano: Donald Fagen
Tenor Sax: Pete Christlieb
Percussion: Victor Feldman
Backup Vocals: Tim Schmit

5 out of 5 stars This "Best of" is very similar to "A Decade Of Steely Dan".......2005-01-03

First let me say that as a Steely Dan fan, this is a great album but, if you're after a greatest hits my recommendation is to buy ASIN: B000002P4R "A Decade Of Steely Dan".

There are three reasons for this. Firstly, the track listing beteeen the two is almost identical. "Then & Now" has a couple more songs but all the main hits are on the "Decade" album.

Secondly the "Decade" album is not an import so it is less than half price and thirdly, "FM" which is my favourite Steely Dan song has a Sax solo in this CD but on the "Decade" album the version, while otherwise identical has a guitar solo. Now I love a good sax solo as much as the next person but I don't think the sax solo does the song justice. It just doesn't have the feel that the guitar solo does. Someone told me once that Larry Carlton played the solo in FM. I don't know if this is true but it certaily sounds like his style. I know it's a personal thing but, I'd buy the "decade" album just for the FM guitar solo (ok and the cheaper price!).

4 out of 5 stars Great collection, weird sequence..........2002-11-05

Unlike most "Best Of" collections, which tend to highlight a few great songs "padded out" with a bunch of filler tracks, this Steely Dan compilation covering their "golden years" (that is, basically the whole decade of the 1970's) is truly loaded with great material from start to finish. But hey, when the group in question is Steely Dan, whose level of songwriting and musicianship was above and beyond virtually all of the "stadium rock", "smooth pop", and disco with which it shared the radio airwaves of that era, the problem is not which mediocre material to include, but rather, which excellent songs have to be omitted due to the time limitations of one CD. I think the compiler(s) did a very good job for the most part, although personally I think I would have replaced "Black Friday" with "Black Cow". If there were "1/2 stars" available, I would have given this disc 4-and-1/2 stars. The only reason I'd withhold a half star is that some of the sequences are a bit weird, none moreso than at the very beginning: We get off to an energetic start with "Reelin' in the Years", but since it's followed by "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", a fine song which was unfortunately saddled with an all-but-useless Intro of some sort of mumbling "log drums" or marimba that runs 23 seconds, we get a half minute (a long time in pop music terms) of what amounts to "dead air". If you listen while driving in your car, where this Intro barely cuts through at all, you might think there's something wrong with the disc, or your CD player. I suppose that this complaint should really be directed at the band and producer of the original track, but as Steely Dan is usually thought of as a "groove" group producing slick, toe-tapping, jazz-&-funk-inflected rock, the slowpoke Intro should have been cut out, at least for this collection; it kinda kills the pace so early in the album. There are a couple other odd sequences as well---it shows how important this aspect of producing a record can be, something that affects the listener's whole perception of it. That said, it really is a superlative batch of music, and anyway, in today's hi-tech world, you can play with the sequence as you wish, or "randomize" the tracks, which can be cool with this type of collection; just don't try to do that while driving your car---the cover photo shows what happened to those who did.

5 out of 5 stars Best "Best Of" Compilation I've Yet Seen.......1998-12-06

I bought this CD originally in Hong Kong, and it got stolen back here in the states. This is by far the best compilation of Steely Dan, and has a great history of the group in its liner notes. Thank you, Amazon, for carrying this and making it easy to replace! If anybody has a Steely Dan fan on their Christmas list, by the way, this is the one to get them.

5 out of 5 stars Glad to be german.......1998-11-23

This is a great compilation of all important Steely Dan songs and I'm glad to live in Germany because I had to pay only 13 DEM (= appr. 7.5 USD)which is a joke. It's a sad thing that this record is only available as an import in USA and therefore so expensive over there.

4 out of 5 stars ANOTHER HITS ENTRY WITH A DIFFERENCE.......2006-05-22

According to a music selling magazine this CD is #24 in their top 40 best selling CDs--and they offer thousands of CDs for sale. Quite an accomplishment. This is due in part that not all the songs are Connie's standard hits but various tunes she recorded over a decade and a half including a sophisticated "Walk On By" brilliantly performed. There are other suprises for those who are not terribly familiar with the availability of her catalogue. This is a nice UK entry. Clean sounding with a nicely chosen selection of songs. It's quite evident that the UK still holds Ms. Francis in high regard as do other forgeign lands. Now if her own country had the same respect, we might see some nice CD releases here.

4 out of 5 stars These are the original recordings.......2005-02-17

i hesitated for a good while before purchasing this particular hits collection because, as i learned the hard way, there are quite a few hits collections by various artists that are not what they appear to be. in this case i had purchased another connie francis greatest hits package several months ago. much to my disappointment the songs were not the original recordings--ms. francis had gone back into the studio and re-recorded the songs. not to say that she and the producers didn't do a great job. the new recordings were quite good and connie's voice is still remarkable. but i grew up in the 50s and 60s and used to hear these songs on the radio so, naturally, i wanted to hear the songs just as i remembered them.

well, this collection delivers! the songs ARE the originals and the remastering is great. i now no longer have to look for another connie francis hits collection. i would have given the rating a full five stars, but i am giving it 4.5 because there is still room on the CD for a few more songs and because i feel that including "walk on by" was a mistake. i don't know. maybe it was a hit by connie somewhere, but i don't recall it and, to be perfectly honest but meaning no disrespect to the artist, this version is, well, i'll just say "not up to par" and leave it at that.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant classics from Connie Francis........2003-06-18

This is a brilliant CD from Connie Francis. Every song is a blast from the past and as they were recorded years ago. With so many of Connies CD on sale it was not easy to know which one I would enjoy as I wanted the songs to be as she had recored them all that time ago, however I chose this one and I am very pleased with it. A must for all Connie Francis fans.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Shakin' Stevens "Now Listen".......2007-07-08

This is a very good Release for Shakin' Stevens. He still has what it takes. The title song rates right up there with his other hits. He also does a good cover of the other hits.

I'm from Bombay,India.. and a big Shakin'Stevens fan & was eager to know what happened to him, since he did not release any new album.. he's back with NOW LISTEN and i must say the Shaky magic still exits.. I would like him to release albums more frequently and go on tours to places like Bombay, Dubai, etc .. he should release a duet album of classic rock n roll tracks, plus new material...I like all the songs on this album i did'nt give it 5 stars because..i was hoping to hear a couple of the old shaky style tracks...

for those who have'nt heard Shakin Stevens, I suggest you buy his Greatest hits album first.

welcome back Shaky... we are listening

5 out of 5 stars The new tunes are GREAT! & a money saving tip..........2005-09-10

If you're a Nik fan, you probably already have most of what's on this CD except for 4 or 5 tunes. The new songs are superb as were his last 2 CDs - To Be Frank and 15 Minutes. He's one of the best song writers of our time, and the quality of the production that goes into the songs can't be beat. You can get the CD for less if you order from Amazon.co.uk. Even with the exchange rate and shipping charge it cost me about $21 instead of the $40 if ordered from this US site.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2005-08-07

Any fan of Nik will want this. Most of his older catalog is out of print so there are a few songs I had not heard before. The 4 new songs are great songs as only Nik could do them. It will also be recommended for anyone that has not heard Nik. A lot of good positive songs. I'll also add that both Niks previous CDs, 15 'minutes' and 'To Be Frank' are fantastic as well. Buy them!

2 out of 5 stars This One Is Good---But Not "The Best".......2006-09-12

Type the following into the search on Amazon to find the best English version of The Merry Widow: Léhar: The Land of Smiles; The Merry Widow; The Count of Luxembourg (Highlights)

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ", September 11, 2006

The "best version" of the "Merry Widow" is NOT this one. The best version is the one with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved that rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note LOUDER than the chorus---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, the Bronhill CD is made in Holland and "there is one left", so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

4 out of 5 stars Joan Sutherland under the baton of Richard Bonynge.......2004-02-24

THE MERRY WIDOW, Franz Lehar's dizzying and delightful operetta chestnut, is given the grand treatment in this highlights album featuring Joan Sutherland.

There have been many widows (including June Bronhill, Anna Moffo, Beverly Sills), though Joan Sutherland's WIDOW has always been especially grand. The supporting cast on this recording features Werner Krenn as Count Danilo with Valerie Masterson as Valencienne, Regina Resnik as Zo-Zo and John Brecknock as Camille, with Francis Egerton, John Fryatt, Graeme Ewer and the Ambrosian Singers.

Sutherland's performance as Hanna Glawari is full of masterful strokes and she approaches the score with a twinkle in her eye, aware of the comedy in the piece. Richard Bonynge conducts the National Philharmonic Orchestra and they are especially chill-inducing with the Overture.

All-in-all a superlative recording at a bargain price.

4 out of 5 stars Performances better than the recording.......2004-01-18

Unfortunately this CD was made from the Australian TV tapeing of The Merry Widow, a shame that the microphones are not of high enough quality to capture the really fine performances, it is hard enough to understand what is being sung when properly recorded let alone when the equipment stinks, however if you enjoy Joan Southerland as much as I do you can overlook the flaws in the recording and just get carried away with the voice, it would be nice if a libretto had been included, a rarity today, that used to be common in the era of the LP

but could be better! How about including "Sing Me," "Mae," "I Am A Clown," "Romance," "Walking In The Rain," "Leave Myself A Little Time," "As Long As There's You" on the next go around, David?

2 out of 5 stars Not one for old fans.......2002-02-17

If I had known how bad this album was going to be I would never have wasted my money. When I heard it I was quite upset, this was not the famous Cassidy voice I remember, the re-mixes are awful. I could feel myself blushing with embarrasment for him. I was a big fan of Davids when I was younger even going to concerts here in England in the 70`s and all I wanted when I bought this cd was to replace my old scratched records. Who do I have to see to get my money back.
These mixes make him sound like an old pub singer trying to recreate his past, even bad kareoke is not this bad.
Sorry David this album is a definate no-no. Iwould not inflict this cd on a deaf man.

5 out of 5 stars Then and Now is a great CD!.......2002-02-01

I watched the Partridge Family when I was a kid, and enjoyed it very much. It is nice to hear these songs some of which I don't remember hearing before. When I listen to this CD it puts me into a good mood. Some of my favorites songs on the CD are Some Kind Of Summer, No Bridge I Wouldn't Cross, Sheltered In Your Arms, Rock Me Baby, and. Ricky' s Tune.

1 out of 5 stars A Sad Look At The Past.......2002-01-26

It is truly sad to hear this CD. I was a fan of The Partridge Family music when I was a teenager back in the '70's. This CD sounds like a desperate attempt for this has-been performer to re-live a certain time in his life. Let's face it, David Cassidy's success lasted about 3 years - TOPS. By listening to this CD you can hear how weak his voice has become. He can't hold the notes as long and he can't hit the high notes at all. All the youthful exuberance is gone from the his voice and, of course, from the songs that were so wonderful in it's day. My biggest question is why do this CD at all. Why not just re-release all the old material and have it sound the way people remember it. Why let people realize how your voice has deteriorated. If I were him I would not have humiliated myself by recording this CD. They couldn't have paid him all that much.

David Cassidy hasn't had any real success since his Partridge Family days. He didn't possess the talent to do other things and move on from the show, most notably like Susan Dey. Sure, he's made a living from die hard fans but they are few and far between. How many people really hold onto their crushes they had on their teen idols? Normal people grow past that and move on to normal adult lives. Cassidy, now well past 50, is still trying to grab those fans back and will get some sap, like me, to by this and be so very disappointed.

One good thing has come out of this for me. I have found a stable of very high quality bootleg CD's of The Partridge Family material and early David Cassidy (which is pretty much The Partridge Family music as well) that has not yet been released. I have also bought The Partridge Family CD's that have been released. When I want to take a walk down memory lane I will pop in one of those CD's and have very fond memories of a carefree and happy youth. It will take me a while to get those awful David Cassidy remakes out of my head but now that I've sold the CD to one of those places where you get 3 bucks for it, at least the CD is out of my house.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of 70s work.......2002-12-09

I discovered the beauty and power of the Walkers via a compilation of british rock acts.Well,I investigated further and heard their 60s output.I read they reformed in 1976 and put out 3 spotty records, then ended 1978.Well,here's a great CD that covers those years very well. Most of the CD is in the easy-listening/country pop vein and is very melodic and emotional. The latter part is in a more british pop(ie:Bowie)style and features a Brian Eno type soundscape("The electrician") with a spooky vocal approach by Scott.I love it.This CD also features unreleased songs from all 3 albums.Fantastic album, but folks who buy it should be familiar with Scott's solo work from the late 60s to early 70s.

    3 out of 5 stars A More Mature HMS.......2006-03-02

Lemon Tongue was Honeymoon Suite's first album in over a decade, and it appears the band has grown up a bit during their absence. Like their countrymen in Harem Scarem, Honeymoon Suite's music has matured on later releases. The big hooks, prominent keyboards, and catchy choruses that were such a big part of the band's AOR sound in the 80's have taken a backseat to smarter lyrics, better songwriting, and a more melodic approach.

Does it work? If you're not expecting the band's classic sound, then yes. Lemon Tongue is a very enjoyable album, and some of the songs here are simply beautiful. They may even be comparable to latter-day Marillion in terms of beauty and emotion.

That being said, I think the band should have stuck a little closer to their classic sound. Lemon Tongue is more mature than Racing after Midnight, but it's also less fun to listen to. At times I forgot I was listening to a rock album at all. Even Amazon labels the band an "alternative rock" act. I'm not necessarily looking for the Big Prize Part II, but an approach that combines the best of the band's older and newer sounds (like what Harem Scarem is doing these days) would work better.

Ultimately, Lemon Tongue is worth checking out, as long as you can leave your expectations at the door. It's not going to make everyone happy, but I think it may pleasantly surprise people.

5 out of 5 stars This is What I Know.......2003-09-15

The music of Honeymoon Suite will move you. If you have a pulse and at least one functioning ear - you need this CD. Songs like "Gone" and "Lemon Tongue" throw an instant party for you, no matter what kind of day you've had. At the other end of the spectrum is a jewel like "Into Me, Into You" which is as beautiful and potent as watching a sunrise in Venice. These guys are true artists disguised as a rock band. The songs are honest and exposed without pretense. Honeymoon Suite has opened a vein and bled true emotion into this effort. Brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Lemon Tongue Rocks.......2002-02-15

This is Honeymoon Suite's first studio album in 10 years. It was well worth the wait. Derry and Johnnie have put together a great album and have an excellent band backing them. They are still performing shows and the shows are still awesome. All of the songs on "Lemon Tongue" are great, but there are a couple that are really good. "What I Know", "So Hard", and "Knew You When" are great. They are very high energy songs with good lyrics to match. Don't worry, they still have the great harmonies and choruses on the tracks "Undone" and "Into me Into You". You will definitely enjoy this album. ;)

5 out of 5 stars The Honeymoon is NOT OVER!!!.......2002-01-29

Honeymoon Suite's latest studio CD is GREAT! This is there first studio album since 1991's Monsters Under The Bed and it is GREAT! Derry & Johnnie have gathered a great band on this effort. The songs still have the vintage Honeymoon Suite sound but with a modern edge to them. You will not be disappointed by this one. Get your copy now...

4 out of 5 stars Freeland proves he can play in the big leagues.......2007-05-31

"Now & Them" is Adam Freeland's debut artist album since the breakup of Tsunami One, his old outfit with Kevin Beber. Most DJs can't write music to save their own skin, as we have seen in the past several years. Suddenly, when it comes to coming up with their own tunes and not simply taking credit for or remixing others, they fall flat on their faces. Freeland, however, avoids this completely. This is a genuinely GREAT album, with amazing production. Freeland's writing skills are SUPERB here, it really is refreshing to know that not all DJs are incompetent. Freeland has stated in many interviews that he hates the copycat nature of electronic music, wherein somebody comes up with a great idea and everyone else makes that idea into a rigid formula and plays it to death (insert trance music here). You can hear this line of thought in "Now & Them", there is a grand total of ONE formulaic track, but it's still done creatively and well. Do NOT expect an album of breakbeats, you will be disappointed. Instead, don't expect anything and you'll like it.

(9/10) "We Want Your Soul" starts you out with a scathing blast against American capitalism. A spoken female vocal really inspires the kind of angst that builds up in a certain kind of individual. Meanwhile a male announcer reinforces the notion that you are being told what to like. This is all overtop of a good solid standard breakbeat with stabbing guitars. "We Want Your Soul" is very interesting; rarely do we hear this type of song from the electronica community. It's like Rage Against the Machine going electronic...you really have to hear for yourself to understand what I mean...

(8/10) "Mind Killer" follows up with a great blast of VERY heavy beats, big guitars, huge basslines, and a fairly decent rap overtop. Definitely a head bobbing track that is very unique. Great production throughout! The rap could have a few more verses in it, but I think Freeland wanted to focus on instrumentation in this one.

(8/10) "Burn the Clock" is another great instrumental tune. It was used in a Calvin Klein ad, featuring Kate Moss of all people! Really interesting rhythms, and great basslines again! Freeland is clearly focussed on crafting solid tunes, as opposed to going for crowd pleasers. There is great layering and pace to this track, and definitely more head bobbing too.

(9.5/10) "Big Wednesday": easily the best song on the album. Featured in "The Animatrix", this is an unbelievably smooth tune. A great walking beat with just a hint of background fuzz provides the scaffolding for some GREAT effects that roll overtop of the beat, rebounding in time with that great beat. Freeland avoids the build-it-up, tear-it-down style and instead provides a focussed and well written piece that is never boring, very polyphonic and extremely hypnotic. It's not ambient, but its not breakbeat, its just great stuff, really. Samples a clip from "South Park" at the end too!

(8/10) "Heel 'n Toe" dives headfirst into hip-hop, but Freeland keeps his style apparent underneath the rap. A fairly decent tune, with a catchy chorus and great focus on rhythm. Not quite as good as the first four tracks, but a good catchy tune with a pretty decent rap too.

(6/10) "Physical World" is pretty odd and a bit off focus. Didn't catch me in any way. Some ok rhythms in there, but not a great song.

(6/10) "Supernatural Thing" also flops. Too little is in this song, and the vocals are pretty annoying and cheesey. There's far too much empty space in too many spots of this song.

(8/10) "Reality 3D" Freeland returns to some great rhythms. This one's a bit more repetitive, but the rhythms make up for it. A spoken philosophical train of thought over some well crafted beats. Not too rushed, but not laid back either.

(6.5/10) "L.I.F.E" is another boring tune that just didn't rub me the right way. Not much to it, and also lacks focus.

(7.5/10) "Nowism" falls more into ambience, and improves over L.I.F.E., but is still a beat weak in some areas. A fairly decent tune to end on though.

Overall,"Now & Them" is really great. Only a couple of stinkers, but the first 5 tracks cancel them out big time. This is well crafted and carefully thought out music. Great beats, Freeland has a WONDERFUL sense of rhythm. This is one DJ album that is worth pursuing.

    5 out of 5 stars A hit collection.......2004-03-13

I never listened to the first album by Adam Freeland, but I'm impressed by this one. The opening title is a jewel ("We want your soul", with cuts from Bill Hicks), and then the hits keeps on going: "Mind Killer", "Burn the clock", "Big Wednesday" very Aphex Twin, "Heel 'n' toe" with its insane break beats, the soulful "Supernatural thing", the dub "L.I.F.E.", and the quiet extro of "Nowism". This album takes you from the intro, and doesn't let you down til the end.
