Maybe a little too serious?.......2007-07-12
The best track - esp if you are a true Southern Rap fan - is track 8 "Do It." DJ Toomp has always produced TI's best songs, and this is the one track that I can listen to over and over again.
The Seriousness Is There (Rating: 7 out of 10- -3.5 stars).......2007-06-18
There are some good songs on here. A personal favorite of mine would be "What's Yo Name" featuring Pharrell. "Hotel" is a good song that feautres Too $hort as both artists drop nice verses. And the song "I Can't Be Your Man" is good. Everything else on this album is okay, but nothing special like everyone else is saying.
Overall, "I'm Serious" is reall nothing special. This album came out at the right moment when the south was already on the rise. I bought this album back in '01 and my opinion still doesn't change when I hear it today. Yes, after hearing all of his albums (except for T.I. vs T.I.P. which isn't out as of this review), this is his best album and it showed how hungry he was, but it isn't the greatest from the south. Overrated album by an overrated rapper (there I said it!). He might be the king of the south to you, but not to me. Especially when there are artists like Scarface, UGK, Outkast, etc. who have been in the game longer than him. Some people may think I'm a hater, but I'm not. I know whats a 5 star album, and this isn't one. I also know it when an artist album is being blown out of it's image (sort of like Lil' Wayne's Tha Carter...also overrated). If you like southern music, go ahead and give this a listen. I believe this is good (which is why I gave this a 7), but not as good as all these 5 star reviews here.
Bring on the negative votes/comments.

It's simple: in his various realizations of the piano music of Erik Satie, Aldo Ciccolini set a standard that has yet to be bettered. This compilation, drawn from recordings made between 1966 and 1971, is consequently the best of the best. Ciccolini always played Satie's music as though it had been written by Claude Debussy, not by some cheap charlatan or uneducated primitive (which, to an extent that is still debatable, Satie was). The result is that these seemingly simple piano pieces acquire a tonal allure that is as surprising as it is undeniable. They possess an understated sophistication that points directly toward Ravel and Poulenc, at the same time providing an opening to the minimalist aesthetic of the later 20th century. Ciccolini's playing is pliant and graceful, and under his fingers the music seems to breathe and come alive. What more could a composer or a listener want? --Ted LibbeyCustomer Reviews:

Great but NOT complete.......2004-12-23
Aldo Ciccolini always has been the greatest interpreter of Satie's work for piano. Ciccolini has a feel for Satie that no one else does, although I have to admit that I prefer a faster tempo to "Poudre D'Or" than the slower, introspective tempo Ciccolini always uses, but that's only a small matter of personal preference. These recordings were originally made in 1967 and 1971 and the sound quality is excellent. At the dawn of the CD era at various sessions from 1983-1986, Ciccolini recorded Satie's complete works for piano on EMI on 5 CDs. They are currently out of print in America, with the exception of one compilation CD (also available at Amazon at the time of writing) with Gabriel Tacchino playing the 2nd piano on the pieces for 2 pianos. Ciccolini was overdubbed playing the 2nd piano on the original recordings in this review. I have a slight preference for the later recordings, but many seem to prefer these originals. You can't go wrong with these, just understand that they are not complete and the missing songs are among Satie's best.
There's only one........2004-06-26
Don't forget Satie was an Anti-Romantic.......2002-02-25
Satie was an anti-romantic composer, at the point of creating the "furniture-music" (musique d'ameublement) which refuses that music could be so expressive as romantics wanted. Other ones clasifies him as a "Surrealist" composer (anti-romantic movement too), but there are no signs of dreams of unconsciousness through his work. Since that point of view you could play Satie's music anyway but expressively. Satie wasn't Debussy, besides the fact that they knew personally and admire each other. Could you play Debussy in a plain style without damage?. I don't think so, because Satie was farther of expressive tradition than Debussy: we can say that Debussy is a spirit of the XIX Century while Satie is a precursor of the XXth. Remember his own words: "I came to the world too young in a time too old".
The best performance I heard of the piano work of our composer was in charge of Jacques Fevrier on the excelent album called "Monsieur Erik Satie", with such a "sideman" as another member of the group of six as Georges Auric for the 4 hands pieces.
I wave goodbye with a great embrace to all Satie's fans.

Phil Collins: Serious Hits...Live! (1990).......2005-08-12
SOMETHING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO HEAVEN
Studio version from the album ...BUT SERIOUSLY (1989). The album version was just outstanding and it goes right next to this live version. Awesome.
AGAINST ALL ODDS (TAKE A LOOK AT ME NOW)
Studio version from the original motion picture & motion picture soundtrack AGAINST ALL ODDS (1984). For years, I had gone on without even listening to this song, but years later, I gave the song another shot and I cannot get enough of it.
WHO SAID I WOULD
Studio version from the album NO JACKET REQUIRED (1985). Just as energetic and fun-filled as the album version.
ONE MORE NIGHT
Studio version from the album NO JACKET REQUIRED (1985). Better than the original.
DON'T LOSE MY NUMBER
Studio version from the album NO JACKET REQUIRED (1985). Both the studio version and this here live version are outstanding.
DO YOU REMEMBER?
Studio version from the album ...BUT SERIOUSLY (1989). Even better than the studio version.
ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE
Studio version from the album ...BUT SERIOUSLY (1989). Both versions are just amazing.
SEPARATE LIVES (Duet with Bridgette Bryant)
Studio version from the original motion picture & motion picture WHITE NIGHTS (1985). The studio version to this song was actually a duet between Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin, but it is obvious that Marilyn Martin is not present on her vocals, but Phil's backing vocalist Bridgette Bryant. Bridgette Bryant's voice is very pretty, but Marilyn Martin's voice was even prettier. But this live version stands right next to the original studio version.
IN THE AIR TONIGHT
Studio version from the album FACE VALUE (1981). Great song, even performed live.
YOU CAN'T HURRY LOVE
Studio version from the album HELLO, I MUST BE GOING! (1982). Not bad.
TWO HEARTS
Studio version from the original motion picture & motion picture soundtrack BUSTER (1988). Great song.
SUSSUDIO
Studio version from the album NO JACKET REQUIRED (1985). Great song.
A GROOVY KIND OF LOVE
Studio version from the original motion picture & motion picture soundtrack BUSTER (1988). Awesome ballad.
EASY LOVER (With Arnold McCuller & Fred White)
Studio version from Phillip Bailey's album CHINESE WALL (1984). As you all know, "Easy Lover" was a duet between Phillip Bailey (of EARTH WIND & FIRE) & Phil Collins. Providing the vocals for Phillip Bailey's verses are two of Phil Collins' male backing vocalists, Arnold McCuller & Fred White. Not bad.
TAKE ME HOME
Studio version from the album NO JACKET REQUIRED (1985). Awesome tune.
Phil Collins is just a genius Icon. His incredible voice and great songs inspire his millions of fans around the world. He continues to inspire with this here incredible live album that all Phil Collins fans should have. Make sure to buy your copy of SERIOUS HITS...LIVE! today.
But the video is 5 stars worth.......2005-01-05
The CD is a good compilation of the best of Phil Collins. It contains the real hits of his first recordings (In the Air Tonight, Sussudio, Another Day in Paradise,...) plus some of his contributions to the film music (Against All Odds, Easy Lover,...). In fact it is too similar to the further compilation "Hits".
In order to get the real "live" punch it is strongly recommended to buy to video/DVD. The extra tracks are: Hand in Hand, Hang in Long Enough, Inside Out, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, The West Side, That's Just the Way It Is, Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore?, Colours, and, Always. Colours and The West Side also include two tremendous drum duets with Chester Thompson, exactly in the same way they did in Genesis "Seconds Out" and their live performances. Hand in Hand is also a good starting tune for each of Phil's concerts.
But the fifth star is well deserved for a nearly 3-hour (!) concert. Amazing and powerful. Collins sings, plays the piano and shows that he has been one of the best drum players in the world, remembering his beginning in Genesis. The more than ten players band gives 110 %: "The Stars of Faith" wind quartet, the vocal support trio, Leland Sklar, Darryl Stuermer and Chester Thompson are of the most confidence to him and their performance is marvellous.
If you want to get the best of Phil, it's more or less to get this or "Hits", but if you really want one of "the best live concerts ever", go for the DVD. Phil Collins has never been so superb!

Aldo Ciccolini's late-1960s survey devoted to Erik Satie's piano music helped spawn new interest in the idiosyncratic French composer. The pianist rerecorded the cycle digitally, and it is from these remakes that the present reissue stems. While the performances are refreshingly pert, stylish, and perceptive, the rather glassy, treble-heavy engineering can't hold a candle to EMI's warmer analog sound for the earlier recordings. Be that as it may, this disc covers a spectrum of Satie's creative moods (to say nothing of his bizarre titles), from the pensive Gymnopédies, Gnossiennes, and Nocturnes to the upbeat irony inherent in the character pieces. Gabriel Tacchino joins Ciccolini for a balletic romp through La belle excentrique. Happily, this duo will have none of the fussy rubato with which a handful of world-class pianists distort Trois Morceaux en forme de poire. If warm, rounded piano sound is not an issue, then this disc will do just fine as your basic Satie starter kit. --Jed DistlerCustomer Reviews:

It's Diggity Das EFX (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-06-29
"Mic Checka" was a dope song as the lead off song. Another song that stood out was "They Want EFX" with it's bumping beat, and head jerking rhymes. You also have more bumping tracks like "Looseys" which is about girls, and "If Only" as well. I would say the best track would be the last track "Straight Out The Sewer" as both Drayz and Skoob both kick dope verses.
As for anything bad. I personally thought the "iggity" style was a little repetative. I can't be mad though, because that was Das' style and it was completely origonal, and had everyone bitting it. Nowadays if you'll get laughed at for using that style like Das EFX did. But back in '91, rap was fun and origonal, so it's all cool.
Dead Serious is almost a classic in my opinion. With production by Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith of EPMD, you can expect a lot of great beats on here, as it sort of reminds me of Redman's Whut? Thee Album. 10 tracks deep with very little flaws, there is not much to ask for. Also this album is edited (a lot of early 90's rap never came with parantal advisory stickers), so expect a couple of edits in a few songs. They would follow up in '93 with Straight Up Sewaside. If you're a fan of origonal 90's rap, I recommend you check this out. Peace!

Don't judge this splendid disc by its silly title. Jean-Yves Thibaudet has put together an imaginatively programmed and gorgeously played Erik Satie recital that is certain to acquire reference status alongside the classic Satie recordings by Aldo Ciccolini, his one-time mentor. The difference lies in Decca's far superior sonics, and Thibaudet's warmer, more robust piano sonority. He imbues the music with subtle dynamic gradations and varied articulations that keep Satie's sparse textures vibrant and fresh, without any of the posturing and willfully slow tempi favored by several Satie specialists. Thibaudet cleverly separates the three famous Gymnopédies and intersperses them between brooding works like the Gnossiennes, upbeat, dry-witted selections ("Jack in the Box" and "La Belle Excentrique," along with some fascinating world premieres). And it's refreshing to hear the cabaret song "Je Te Veux" so seamlessly phrased, as if vocal chords had temporarily replaced the piano's hammers. Simply a joy. --Jed DistlerCustomer Reviews:
Great take on Satie.......2007-01-05
I may be too harsh but this was a disappointment.......2005-08-30
Quite... simply...a joy!.......2003-01-09
I also think Satie used it as map & vehicle rather than as destination. (I used to refer to - and prefer - Aldo Ciccolini while reading the score. Thibaudet has provided a whole new landscape to fit the map.)
Although Satie said his music should be performed "so that no-one listens to it," I think he was actually trying to get to us in the same way that admonishing someone to not think about elephants has the opposite effect.
Thibaudet's interpretations are a joy to listen to, to pay attention to. (And I thought I knew Satie...!) Whether taken as seriously as a mating dance, or as playful as one, there is a profound sense of intimacy here.
If your impression of Satie is that he wrote "furniture music" long before Muzak - sounds to provide a background while you eat or chat or have drinks, or shop at Nordstroms - then this recording may reawaken you. Thiba breathes new life into Satie, new levels: it seems to take one into deeper realms of consciousness, toward thoughtless contemplation.
(And I learned that "'Gnossienne' refers to the 'Crane Dance' performed in the labyrinth of the palace of Knossos [Gnossos] in ancient Crete." ...Now, is that provocative?)
Maybe the best..........2002-12-25
A new standard for Satie.......2002-12-25
I have listened to many performers play some of these pieces and Thibaudet is the best I have heard since Ciccolini. The only thing that keeps me from recommending this CD without reservation is that Thibaudet plans to release a box set in the near future that will contain all of Satie's piano music. If you are an obsessed completist like myself that is something to really look forward to.

The leader's full-bodied, bravura tones are as bright and bold as ever, edging more into the stylistic atmosphere once occupied by the former trumpet god, Freddie Hubbard. Hargrove is backed by a quintet featuring ex-Jazz Messenger, pianist Ronnie Matthews, bassist Dwayne Burno, drummer Willie Jones IIII, and alto saxophonist/flutist Justin Robinson. They pull no punches on these no-nonsense tunes, like the Latin-tinged title track, and the John Coltrane/Ornette Coleman-coded "Camaraderie." Special guest Slide Hampton makes his elegant trombone presence felt on his soaring tune, "A Day in Vienna," on the waltzy "Salima's Dance," and the standard, "Invitation." So much for the myth that jazz musicians like Hargrove can't play funk and swing at the same time. --Eugene Holley, Jr.Customer Reviews:

Title says: - Nothing serious. I tell you it's a lie!.......2006-05-27
Roy Hargrove in the Jazz tradition from his early recordings with a new group and with Slide Hampton playing trombone in no more than three out of the eight tracks. Great!
The same uptempo swinging tracks and slowdown ballads with a samba track (what a delight!)which have marked Hargrove's Jazz albums.
A great 2006 surprise to celebrate Hargrove's return to his roots after a long time trying new ways, boring ways.
By the way, this is the true 'new way' for Hargrove: brand-new and creative compositions by members of the group, one by Hargrove, an inspired 'Day in Vienna' by Slide Hampton plus one only standard, the great Bronislau Kaper's 'Invitation' from the self-titled movie picture. Well balanced!
A delicious toast to Jazz! Cheers!

Some songs on the cd are less than the aforementioned material but it is one of my favorite cd's to pop in and listen to some fine (and sometimes very useable) lyrics.

Serious Guitar Playing.......2005-01-04
Other highlights include Clarence Garlow's "Route 90" (Garlow, a dj in Beaumont Tx helped inspire Winter's love of the blues), Sonny Boy Williamson's "Unseen eye", and "Give it back", a song about prompting a woman to return various purchases-- i.e. wig, glass-eye, false teeth, wooden leg--during a nasty breakup (the soloing here is as evil as it is faithful to the dictates of the lyrics). Jon Paris (bass player) contributes good harmonica playing on a number of the tracks. Particularly tasty is his first position playing (which in blues emphasizes bending the very low and very high reeds) on "Good time woman".
Overall this cd matches the explosive energy of Winter's live performances during the 1980's (And I've seen him at least a dozen times that decade).
Almost 5 stars.......2004-08-18
Sound The Bell, Good Time Woman, My Time After Awhile are just so full of enthusiasm and energy. Infact, again, EVERY track is superb, i have to say.
This one is well worth purchasing. I definitely do not regret having it in my collection.
