About the Artist
Jim Savage lives in Dallas, Texas where he combines music, theater, storytelling, and and the Vision Quest ceremony in his work with adolescent drug prevention through his "Imagine Progam".

Jim is known for his beatiful Native American Flute playing and his unique use of drums, panpipe, and other native instruments in creating inspiring musical experiences.

Left Out.......2006-09-16

Liked the album & movie but in the soundtrack they should have dropped Don Henley's "She On The Zoom " ( weak song) for Berlin's "No More Words" which was in the film but not included on the soundtrack. Well, at the very least should have added the song to it.

80's Soundtrack.......2006-08-16

Very good 80's soundtrack covering a lot of different styles of music from that era. Features the very hard to find Madonna song "Gambler" I don't know why this song was never a radio hit, maybe because the opening of the song sounds a lot like "Maniac" from Flashdance.

Standout track: Change by John Waite featuring a young Patty Smythe from Scandal on background vocals.

I like it because it always pumped me up when I was young. Lunatic Fringe was a great song to ride and run to.

I love the song Hungry For Heaven by Dio, one of his best.
Journey does a great song in Only the young.
I finally found Lunatic Fringe! It's on the radio all the time and it drove me crazy when I didn't know what it was.

While wrestling for Coronado Highschool in Las Vegas this cd got me pumped up for every match. A must have for any wrestler!

A nice overview of Caruso's legacy.......2007-01-04

Enrico Caruso was one of the first "media stars," with his recordings selling widely in the early twentieth century; he helped popularize the recording industry. He was one of the leading tenors of his day, and is regarded as one of the tops of the twentieth century (although he began serious singing in the late 19th century).

This CD features some of his "greatest hits," among which are his well reputed version of "Vesti la giubba" (from I Pagliacci, one of his signature operas); arias from Verdi's Rigoletto, including the bold "Questa o quella" and "La donna e mobile"; some of his most popular recordings from Puccini, including "E lucevan le stelle," "Recondita armonia," and "Che gelida manina." Nice additions to the CD are wonderful ensemble pieces, such as the sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor (including the voice of Luisa Tetrazzini) and the quartet from Rigoletto (with Amelita Galli-Curci).

Interesting tidbits include his first recording, from 1902, and his last, from 1920.

All in all, this is a very nice representation of his work. I'm not sure that it compares with the old LP (with him in clown outfit) that includes Rossini's nearly unsingable "La danza," among other items. But it is a terrific introduction to the art of Caruso. Anyone who has not listened to this tenor's works before would be well advised to use this as their entree to his oeuvre.

If You Only Buy One Caruso . . ........2001-01-03

let this be it! Wonderful, generous selection of his singles for Victor, most of them solos, but a few duets, quartets, quintets, and a sextet. The accompanying booklet makes a great deal of including his first and last recordings, but by far the most important here is Caruso's 1907 recording of Vesti la giubba, the first classical recording to sell over a million copies in the United States. If you listen to it, you'll know why--it's every bit as melodramatic as the minstrel show singles with which it shared the top of the early twentieth-century charts.

I have this CD and I am ordering more for family and friends.
This CD will uplift and touch you in your heart center. I have never heard more beautiful and Soul touching songs before. Each song sung is precious. My favorite song is Pilomaya. Pilomaya is a special song of expressing gratitude in Lakota. I highly recommend this CD. It is great!

Lotte Lehmann in her Prime.......2006-07-08

Lotte Lehmann is one of the great German sopranos of the Twentieth Century. For many years, from her creation of the role of the Composer in the revised version of Richard Strauss's "Ariadne auf Naxos" in 1916 up to her departure in 1937 prior to the Nazi occupation of Austria, she was a star at the Vienna State Opera and a darling of the Viennese audience. She was also enthusiatically received at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, as well as the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

During the years of her prime Lehmann created a couple of Strauss's operatic heroines, including the Dyer's Wife in "Die Frau Ohne Schatten" and Christine in "Intermezzo." She also sang a great variety of roles ranging from Wagner's romantic heroines to the Italian verisimo parts by Giordano and Puccini. Puccini was said to have been one of her bigget admirers, especially for her renditions of Mimi in La boheme and Suor Angelica. However, her most famous roles were the Marshallin in Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier" and Sieglinde in Wagner's "Die Walkure." This Preiser issue documents accoustic recordings of nearly all her more renowned roles, made between 1914 and 1925.

Although Lehmann later made more amenable electrical recordings of many of the arias here, as well as excerpts from "Der Rosenkavalier" and Acts One and Two of "Die Walkure," these accoustic recordings more often than not show her in fresher voice with a joyous freedom on top. Her hallmarks as a singing-actress, such as her always vivid enunciation of the text and her great variety of tonal colors and moods, are also evident even in the earliest of these recordings.

This set is one of the gems in Preiser's famous historic singers series and anyone interested in operatic singing should consider investing in this set. The CD transfer unavoidably contains some surface noise but the vibrancy and color of Lehmann's voice are faithfully recaptured.

This spectacular collection of more than 90 arias sung by 46 of the greatest singers of the century consists of recordings made between 1906 and 1943. Naturally, they are in far from high fidelity, but this is more charming than disturbing. And all the greats are here: from the tenors Enrico Caruso, Beniamino Gigli, John McCormack, and Jussi Bjoerlong, to the sopranos Rosa Ponselle, Amelita Galli-Curci, Claudia Muzio, and Kirsten Flagstad, to mezzos Conchita Supervia and Ernestine Schumann-Heink, to baritones Giuseppe de Luca and Mattia Battistini, and basses Ezio Pinza and Feodor Chaliapin--to mention a few. A primer of great singing.......2006-11-07

The Prima Voce Treasury of Opera Vol 1 contains arias and a few duets from operas A- M ( Adriana Lecouvreur- Manon)sung by singers of the first half of the 20th Century. Vol 2 continues with excerpts from operas M-Z ( Manon Lescaut - Die Zauberflote).All the tracks are taken from the Nimbus Prima Voce catalogue, using their controversial re-recording technique, which many people dislike for the over reverberant sound.Personally, I find the transfers more acceptable than the strident, edgy transfers of some other companies.

Opinion about any compilation of this sort is a personal matter. I find the choice of singers predictable and unimaginative and at times rather strange: Lauri-Volpi is not a representative Don Jose nor Faust for example.Overall though the standard of singing is very high.

The accompanying booklet contains well written potted biographies of the singers featured on the CDs.

This compilation is a very good primer of great singing from the past for someone starting out in this field but not for anyone who is already steeped in historic recordings, except perhaps to listen to in the car, which is what I bought it and Vol2 for.

Outstanding.......2001-09-12

As it happened, I bought Vol. 2 of this collection before Vol. 1, and everything I said in my review of Vol. 2 applies equally here. The breadth and depth of the operas and the singers are incredible, and the price for 6 CDs is an amazing bargain. The sound is remarkable, especially considering that some of the recordings are nearly 100 years old, though most are from the 20s and 30s. Highly recommended, whether you are new to opera or a seasoned veteran!

A collection made with taste and savvy.......2001-03-10

The English just know how to do things in good taste and I must say, the elements of this Prima Voce collection have been carefully selected and arranged. Arias are grouped so that you have two or three from the same opera together. This is a sensible arrangement and each singer selected for those particular arias is one who sings it very well and in a unique way. I had already been collecting single singer albums from Prima Voce when I discovered this Treasury compilation and wish now I had bought it first, because you get a good sampling of all the great singers in their catalog and will hear artists of whom you may not have been aware. From this Treasury collection you will hear singers that especially please your ear and then you might buy albums just of them. For me, this set confirmed those choices of favorites such as Claudia Muzio and Tito Schipa. Best of all, the six CDs make for a pleasing listening experience as a whole. I listen to them while I drive. There aren't any bad performances here and quite frankly there are few contemporary artists that can match or top these. It's a great way to establish an historical foundation for your recordings if you are building a collection of singers.

One of the Great Bargains.......2000-06-23

This is one of those rare bargains that one dreams about. I discovered it while browsing and I could not believe that one could have six disks for less than the normal cost of two. Nor is this an economy issue, transferred from what I assume is original pirate recordings along the lines of Gala and Opera d'Oro and even Myto. The transfers are clean and the collection is nonpareil. In all transfers I miss texts. But the music itself is glorious, the selection intelligent, and the artists the stars of the opera world. Unlike other collections arranged in chronological order, these use a simple alphabetic sequence of operas, so one can follow in one's own libretto or score more easily. The recordings appear to bridge the two world wars. If this is indeed volume one, I cannot wait for two.

One of the most compelling pianists of his generation, Stephen Scott highlights his adroit and tale-spinning sense of swing on Quest. The setting is essentially piano-bass-drums trio with Ron Carter and Victor Lewis. Steve Kroon's congas and percussion augment the ensemble on several tracks. The focus is mainly on Scott's original pieces, including the lovely opening ode to childhood "Like a Child at Play," obviously speaking from the perspective of a parent. Elsewhere Scott gracefully augments his considerable piano gifts with some electric keyboard work. And his jazz-proud best comes as he relishes the inherent swing possibilities available in Irving Berlin's timeless "Cheek to Cheek." Among the new breed of pianists, Stephen Scott definately soars beyond the status quo....His trio involves vicotor lewis, and ron carter; two men that have been infused in the artform years and years before scott's existence....Thats what makes the cd so exciting.....his supple mcoyish style accents really ignites the rest of the band...The addition of the percussionist makes this cd even more fresh and innovative....five stars baby.....
